ADB stooped working. fail, please help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

mods sorry if i should've posted this in Q&A, if needs to be moved go ahead
anyways adb stopped working for me randomly today for no apparent reason. i rebooted my computer, my phone no result.
so i thought maybe something was wrong with the SDK so i deleted the SDK and reinstalled it with no add-ons and i still cant use adb. then i decided ti install all the addons for the SDK and i cant seem to finger point the issue so i provided a screen-shot of my command prompt error and my tools folder to see if i'm missing anything.
All help appreciated

cd\
cd AndroidSDK\Tools\
adb devices
try those commands in your terminal.

Look in the platform-tools folder.

(q) adb

I know this is a noob question but I installed the sdk on my windows vista 32bit PC I've read like everything I could about doing this but I can't seem to get adb working when I run cmd adb it says 'adb' is not recongnized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I'm pretty new to this but want to be able to use this any help would be great thanks in advance..

Are you running adb from within the /platform-tools directory?
The basics of adb
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694250
You have to run the commands from wherever you extracted the sdk ex I put mine on the main c drive so I have to type this first:
cd c:/android-sdk-windows/tools

I tried it from the start menu and that was what it said I also tried it in platform-tools it just flashes the screen for a second and thats all..

You're getting that error because you're not in the folder where adb is. Look in the platform-tools folder. You can run it from that folder, or just copy it into the tools folder.

If all you are using from the SDK is ADB, then moving ADB to the /tools directory is not an issue. This will bork the functionality of other tools in the SDK though.
U can also add it to ur command lines so u don't have to always be in ur sdk folder to use it. Google adb and there r instructions on how to do this. Its very easy

[Q] setting up adb

I've been wanting to set up adb for a while, but just don't know how to do it. There are numerous guides, and each say different things generally. Things that hold me back from setting up are:
1) does it make a difference what guide I use if I'm already a root user? *Cause I am.
2) when I run cmd as administrator, I get C:\Windows\system32 instead of just C:\
3) I don't know whether my computer is 32 bit or 64 bit.
4) Which are the right files I need in order to do this?
Could someone please point me in the right direction? My computer runs windows vista.
Just put the sdk on your c drive and rename the sdk folder to android-sdk-windows
Now don't run cmd as administrator, just type this in standard command prompt.
cd c:/android-sdk-windows/tools
and you should be able to use adb. Make sure debugging is checked in settings on your phone. You will find it in manage apps/development.
If that doesn't work maybe this will help.

Also make sure that your tools folder has the adb.exe file in it or you are going to get a
"adb shell not recognized as an internal or external batch command" took me about 20 minutes of.retyping adb shell to figure it out haha..
The reason i say that is because if you have a fresh dl of SDK within the last.couple of weeks then the adb.exe file has been moved and is no longer in your tools folder.
As for the command prompt. Open cmd then type
Cd/
Will take you straight to your C: directory if your not sure where to go from there type "dir" then cd to whatever folder your sdk is in
or type "cd(space).." like "cd .." Then do it again however many times you need to until it backs you all the way down to the c:
Click start and right click on computer then click properties, it will tell you there if your 64 or 32 bit.

Thanks guys for the help. Sorry, but I'm not sure where to get the sdk, is this it: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html ?
Also, what drivers do I need to install on my phone?

If you check that first link I posted above it has everything you're about to ask lol. Go to control panel on ur comp, navigate to system, and it will tell you if your machine is 32 or 64bit.
And yes that's the sdk. I'd download the first zip in the post and extract it to your c drive.

Moving adb to the /tools folder from /platform-tools will will Bork some other features of the sdk.
lol sorry man what threw me off is the "installing drivers" thing. Ok, do I also need to download that installer file as well or do I just take the sdk and extract it to the C drive? I'm sorry for these noob questions, I just don't want to mess up anything.
Don't worry about the questions. That's what we're here for. Yes, extract it to your C: drive. Adb is located in the platform-tools folder.

1). It doesn't really matter what guide you use, just as long as they give you correct directions.
2) Press the windows key (between Ctrl & Alt) and type "cmd" then press enter. Then once you're in command prompt, just type "CD\"
3) Right click "My Computer" then go to properties. Look for system type, and it'll tell you whether you're 32-bit or 64-bit. I believe most people have 32-bit.
4) All you need is this file.

No, run the SDK Manager to get the platform-tools folder.
EDIT:
The SDK Manager is located in the folder that you extracted and probably renamed. For instance, mine is located here C:\AndroidSDK\SDK Manager.exe (If you can't locate it, let me know).
After you run the SDK Manager you only need the Android SDK platform-tools, revision 5 package
(Sorry about the double post)

If adb is the only tool you are going to use in the SDK you don't have to worry about it. If you do ever use another tool and you get an error about adb not present in the /platform-tools folder you can always just move it back.

Adb

Please could someone help me in using Adb to allow me to transfer more files on the sd card without root? I don't know how to do it and would appreciate if someone could explain it to me.
Thanks

If you open the start menu on your computer and right click computer, click properties you should go to some menu and in the top left it will say device manager I think, then you will go to another menu search for other devices or your phones name which should be something like don't Ericson 4.0.A.2.... etc. Something beginning with 4 and has dots a zero and A. Lol

Sorry but that wasn't even relevant.... to use adb you need android sdk.
move apps to sd? command is
adb shell
setinstall location or something like that.
move files to sd is
adb push filename /sdcard
thank me if I helped.

adb shell
pm setInstallLocation 2
reboot
I would thank, but it seems that I still don't understand. I ain't very deep into Android-know a few basics but I'll need a lot more than that to help me (no offence intended). Thank you

download the android sdk or a adb package.
extract/install the package/sdk
download adb via the sdkmanager if using the sdk
then load adb.exe via cmd e.g shift + right click - open command window here.
type 'adb shell'
(make sure usb debuggin is on on the phone and usb plugged in.)
then type 'pm setInstallLocation 2'
then type 'reboot'
then type 'exit'
all without quotes.
Still sounds so complex! Lol, will try though. Thanks

[Q] problem with themeing

So everything gone fine till I try to push the framework-res.apk to my phone.
adb push framework-rez.apk /system/framework/
'adb' is not a recongnized as an internal or external command,
know I understand what that means but I installed SDK manager and had no cmd in there so I just used Command Prompt. If that is all of my problem how to I get SDK cmd? It didnt install when I installed the problem.

It's not enough to just install SDK manager, you also have to install ADB if you want to interface with your phone through your computer. You shouldn't have to go through SDK manager to use ADB once you have it installed, it should work straight through windows command prompt.

That will walk you through installing adb. Good luck.

Well thank you that helped me get pass that issue. Now how do I change the permissions on my phones framework-res.apk?
The error I have now is
"failed to copy 'framework-res.apk' to '/system/framework/framework-res.apl': Read-only file system."
I can't seem to figure a way around this.

I had that issue too, how I bypass it is to boot to CWM, go to "mounts and storage", then mount /system (and /data if that's relevant to what you're pushing). Others have used a line of code to mount the system from the PC end, but I find this easier to do through the phone.

Thank you that did the trick
Go to the system32 folder on your c drive and copy cmd from there to your tools folder in the sdk.
Now when you want to push, put the files you want to push in the tools folder and then open up the cmd that you placed in that folder, then run the push command.

It worked for the file being in that folder and all. But I still have to do it in recovery and unmount system. I still get the read-only error

Erased everything. Stuck in recovery with no rom. Help?

So I screwed up, wasn't paying attention and wiped everything including the internal sd card. Now I'm stuck in recovery with no rom to flash. I tried mounting usb storage in recovery but nothing happens. My computer dings when I plug the phone in but it doesn't show up, then I press mount and nothing happens. Any ideas?

Guide in my signature.
Post one for ADB.
Post three for pushing a ROM.zip to your phone.
You can use ADB to push a ROM .zip to the internal storage while in the recovery.
Ok awesome, thanks guys. For a minute I was thinking I might be screwed since I couldn't mount.

ADB and fastboot can usually save your ass.
Ok, downloaded latest drivers, reinstalled ADB using the ADB for dummies app. copied rom to platform tools, held shift and right clicked inside the platform tools folder, clicked "open command window here".
In the command window I have after trying to push looks like this:
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb push milestone4.zip /sdcard/
error: device not found
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>
Any idea how to get my device to be found?
