I know this is a noob question but I installed the sdk on my windows vista 32bit PC I've read like everything I could about doing this but I can't seem to get adb working when I run cmd adb it says 'adb' is not recongnized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I'm pretty new to this but want to be able to use this any help would be great thanks in advance..

Are you running adb from within the /platform-tools directory?
The basics of adb
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694250
You have to run the commands from wherever you extracted the sdk ex I put mine on the main c drive so I have to type this first:
cd c:/android-sdk-windows/tools

I tried it from the start menu and that was what it said I also tried it in platform-tools it just flashes the screen for a second and thats all..

You're getting that error because you're not in the folder where adb is. Look in the platform-tools folder. You can run it from that folder, or just copy it into the tools folder.

If all you are using from the SDK is ADB, then moving ADB to the /tools directory is not an issue. This will bork the functionality of other tools in the SDK though.
U can also add it to ur command lines so u don't have to always be in ur sdk folder to use it. Google adb and there r instructions on how to do this. Its very easy

Ive downloaded and reinstalled all drivers, pretty much tried everything. in the command prompt i keep getting adb is not a valid file. Please help. ive already use the adb tutorials and done all the stuff they said, im using windows 7 32 bit
If you downloaded the evo-recovery.zip, the file you need is in there, it's just has a different name.
The instructions where written w/ adb.exe in mind, but the file in the packet is called "adb-windows.exe."
All you have to do is substitute "adb-windows" when the command calls for "adb"
Like this -
"adb reboot recovery"
should be
"adb-windows reboot recovery"
For me to have it work, I had to go to the command prompt and be in the same folder.
If you're not familiar w/ DOS, do it this way and it will save you sometime.
Unzip the evo-recovery.zip to the C: Drive
Go to a command prompt and type the following
cd\ {ENTER}
cd evo-recovery {ENTER}
Now you'll be at the C:\evo-recovery>
Here you can type the command "adb-windows reboot recovery"
You need to set the environment in order to execute abd under any folder

Can someone please help me, I can not get the ADB drivers installed. I have done everything I can think of. Tried uninstalling them using usbdeview, tried uninstalling them through device manager but nothing I do is working. I am running a bootcamp windows 7 64 bit. Oh I do have USB debugging selected.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

It's been so long since I've had to do that with any version of Windows, I think the last was Win95, that I didn't even think to do that! I'll throw it in there just to make things easy!
Every time I try and us the command "adb push" I get a return that says
cannot stat 'file name' : No such file or directory
Its probably something simple but I'm a newbie to ADB
my complete command is:
adb push vision.lights.so /system/lib/hw/
cannot stat 'vision.lights.so': No such file or directory
Is that file located in the same folder as your adb? If not then you need to setup a path to use adb anywhere. Instructions for that are in the adb guide.

Do I need to cd to the directory where that file is before I can push it?
My adb is already set up to run from any directory

Yes, you need to be in (cd) the directory that contains the file, or you could use the full path
adb push /download/vision.lights.so /system/lib/hw
It might be slightly different with Windows (c:/ ?)

Example if your adb is in c:/sdk/tools/
then you would have to cd until you are in tools folder (i.e. c:/sdk/tools/)
Copy your file into the tools folder.
Your command should work.

Yes yes and yes windows needs c:/whatever assuming its in c

What version of windows are you on? You followed all of the instructions on setting up adb from that thread in the Shift forums? I also rooted my roomate's Shift, and I read that adb setup tutorial when I was over there. It was pretty solid. I already had adb set up, but read it through to see. When I set up adb, I had someone advise to me to place the adb.exe, and that .dll file (found in platform tools, in the SDK download) in my 'system32' folder of my PC. Once I placed those two files in the 'system32' folder, adb has worked flawlessly.
Also, have you made sure you have all the correct drivers installed? I believe I also had to install HTC Sync, because that installed some drivers that were necessary. Once it installed, I uninstalled it (the drivers will remain installed) because it can interfere with adb communication, apparently. Hope you get it set up. Once you do, rooting the Shift wasn't hard. Just follow the instructions to the t, and just copy and paste the commands, to eliminate the possibility of messing up the commands.
Thanks man I'm gonna give the HTC sync thing a shot

You're welcome, feel free to PM me if you have any more issues.
to get adb to work, you need to be in the same directory as all of the sdk tools to use my setup as an example, my stuff is located in
C:\SDK\platform-tools
when I open the cmd prompt, it starts in
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>
to change directories, type
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>cd \
the display will change to
C:\>
type (in my example, yours may vary unless you set your folders up the same way)
C:\>cd SDK\platform-tools
it will change to
C:\SDK\platform-tools>
then you will be able to use adb commands like push/pull, shell, devices, etc.

By putting the adb.exe and the .dll files in the 'system32' folder, that will allow you to execute adb commands from any directory in the command prompt. I don't have to navigate to my sdk tools to use adb. It saves a few steps, so you can just open up your command prompt and command away.
Or you can put the directory that contains adb in your system PATH. This will let you execute adb in a command prompt anywhere...

I've been wanting to set up adb for a while, but just don't know how to do it. There are numerous guides, and each say different things generally. Things that hold me back from setting up are:
1) does it make a difference what guide I use if I'm already a root user? *Cause I am.
2) when I run cmd as administrator, I get C:\Windows\system32 instead of just C:\
3) I don't know whether my computer is 32 bit or 64 bit.
4) Which are the right files I need in order to do this?
Could someone please point me in the right direction? My computer runs windows vista.
Just put the sdk on your c drive and rename the sdk folder to android-sdk-windows
Now don't run cmd as administrator, just type this in standard command prompt.
cd c:/android-sdk-windows/tools
and you should be able to use adb. Make sure debugging is checked in settings on your phone. You will find it in manage apps/development.
If that doesn't work maybe this will help.

Also make sure that your tools folder has the adb.exe file in it or you are going to get a
"adb shell not recognized as an internal or external batch command" took me about 20 minutes of.retyping adb shell to figure it out haha..
The reason i say that is because if you have a fresh dl of SDK within the last.couple of weeks then the adb.exe file has been moved and is no longer in your tools folder.
As for the command prompt. Open cmd then type
Cd/
Will take you straight to your C: directory if your not sure where to go from there type "dir" then cd to whatever folder your sdk is in
or type "cd(space).." like "cd .." Then do it again however many times you need to until it backs you all the way down to the c:
Click start and right click on computer then click properties, it will tell you there if your 64 or 32 bit.

If you check that first link I posted above it has everything you're about to ask lol. Go to control panel on ur comp, navigate to system, and it will tell you if your machine is 32 or 64bit.
And yes that's the sdk. I'd download the first zip in the post and extract it to your c drive.

Moving adb to the /tools folder from /platform-tools will will Bork some other features of the sdk.
lol sorry man what threw me off is the "installing drivers" thing. Ok, do I also need to download that installer file as well or do I just take the sdk and extract it to the C drive? I'm sorry for these noob questions, I just don't want to mess up anything.
Don't worry about the questions. That's what we're here for. Yes, extract it to your C: drive. Adb is located in the platform-tools folder.

1). It doesn't really matter what guide you use, just as long as they give you correct directions.
2) Press the windows key (between Ctrl & Alt) and type "cmd" then press enter. Then once you're in command prompt, just type "CD\"
3) Right click "My Computer" then go to properties. Look for system type, and it'll tell you whether you're 32-bit or 64-bit. I believe most people have 32-bit.
4) All you need is this file.

No, run the SDK Manager to get the platform-tools folder.
EDIT:
The SDK Manager is located in the folder that you extracted and probably renamed. For instance, mine is located here C:\AndroidSDK\SDK Manager.exe (If you can't locate it, let me know).
After you run the SDK Manager you only need the Android SDK platform-tools, revision 5 package
(Sorry about the double post)

If adb is the only tool you are going to use in the SDK you don't have to worry about it. If you do ever use another tool and you get an error about adb not present in the /platform-tools folder you can always just move it back.
So everything gone fine till I try to push the framework-res.apk to my phone.
adb push framework-rez.apk /system/framework/
'adb' is not a recongnized as an internal or external command,
know I understand what that means but I installed SDK manager and had no cmd in there so I just used Command Prompt. If that is all of my problem how to I get SDK cmd? It didnt install when I installed the problem.

It's not enough to just install SDK manager, you also have to install ADB if you want to interface with your phone through your computer. You shouldn't have to go through SDK manager to use ADB once you have it installed, it should work straight through windows command prompt.

I had that issue too, how I bypass it is to boot to CWM, go to "mounts and storage", then mount /system (and /data if that's relevant to what you're pushing). Others have used a line of code to mount the system from the PC end, but I find this easier to do through the phone.

Thank you that did the trick
Go to the system32 folder on your c drive and copy cmd from there to your tools folder in the sdk.
Now when you want to push, put the files you want to push in the tools folder and then open up the cmd that you placed in that folder, then run the push command.
