For the people that wanted to know if you can disable HTC Sense on the Desire, or just wanted to know how to do it:
Here is a short demonstration of how to disable HTC Sense on a Desire.
It's nice to know this is possible. IMO the stock version (Nexus One look) also has some nice benefits.
Sorry if this was already posted
thanks....
this what i needed to make my decision....
defintally a desire
thanks that what i was looking for..
so excited about getting the Desire...
But, I dont think that will completely stop all Sense processes.
The Sense framework is still being used, CMIIW.

All Sense on Android is, is a few apps.
The main one being the Launcher which you can disable as seen in that video.
There's then the Messaging and Dialler apps which you can replace with stock apps (without being rooted).
That's about it apart from the fact you'd be left with a Black notification tray instead of a White one and a far superior lock screen.

IMO, i dont think someone would disable the Sense (maybe just to see how the plain Nexus One looks like ).
and we have 576 MB RAM; I dont think we should worry about "apps that run in the background"

Jup I found out that even if you disable Sense, tbere will still be some 'behind the scenes' Sense stuff going on. Like for example, Stock 2.1 only supports 5 homescreens instead of 7.
So if you REALLY want the fast Stock 2.1 experience, disable Sense is not enough. You will have to put a real stock 2.1 ROM on it, or how it is called.
Anyway, most people probably wont have any problems with this.
Speaking of stock 2.1 rom being faster than the one with Sense UI.
How much faster is it? Is it very noticeable?

Keeping the HTC framework will be to the owner's advantage, some of the HTC apps that don't run on a stock Android rom will then work properly.

exscuse me for stupid questions but i have a topaz and i'm thinking about take a desire!

The contents of each tab in Manila are available as widgets in Android and they're far more customizable. There's really no reason to have Manila on Android.
nm... it was shown in the video @ the OP.

When / If it gets rooted and vanilla 2.1 gets ported to it, I am going to always have a Nandroid backup of a version with SenseUI and a Nandroid backup of Vanilla 2.1 Android so I can swap between them as and when I want.

From what I have seen, the difference is almost not even noticeable. But then again all the Desire video's I have seen are after it has just been turned on. Maybe the Sense UI will cause some lag after a while of using.
Anyway, Stock 2.1 HAS to be faster, that is a fact. 2 homescreens less, no Sense stuff running in the background, etc.
If I would turn off Sense UI, I would not do it for the speed improvement btw. I like the look of 2.1, with that 5 homescreens and the way to switch between them.

Well, when I finally got my long awaited HTC TyTn, I asked on a forum if anyone knew if there were any possibility to overclock the CPU....
The only answer I got back then was : "..There's no need to overclock the TyTn, the CPU is a 400 mhz!!"
But now, I'm sitting here, stuck with my sloooow TyTn (after selling my Hero to earn money for a new Desire)
So...I guess we can always need some more power, just wait some months and the apps and games are demanding more than enough for the Snapdragon CPU....and you need to swallow a camel or two

Yeah, sure it's a 1Ghz processor. But my HD2 has it and it still lags.
So I will take all the extra speed I can get for perfect performance

You can argue that on the HD2 it's down to the OS/custom ROMs that it still 'lags'. My brother has the a stock T-mobile ROM on his device and I fail to see any lag.

The better lock screen you're talking about, is that after disabling Sense? Which lock screen would that be, and what lock screen does the alternative have? And I always thought there were several lock screens to choose from - I've seen one where you make a pattern, one where you just flick the lock screen down, one where you "turn a wheel", and possibly some others, can't remember.
That's a lot of "lock screen" for one post
Ok Im all backed up and ready to give it a go. I just have a few questions.
I don't use the Sense Launcher and have almost nothing on my home screens. just the scrolling dock at the bottom. launcher pro.
What are some things I am going to lose?
What is the differences in the Camera? Details?
What are the differences in the Dialer?
I like the dialer on Fresh 3.2 because of the FB integration.
I don't use 4G
I have not used HDMI as my flatscreen has a CPU connected already.
Is it possible to have the gallery from 3.2 with the FB pictures tab? or is that a sense thing?
Basically I don't know what all is strictly sense.
the default aosp dialer has what i consider to be a fault. you can't just spell out the name of contact. so i started using DialerOne.
dont' forget to check out both CM6 related threads (both are a bit quiet, but will answer many of the questions you may cross...search is your friend)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729802
not sure on the FB stuff since I don't use it except to fill in the pics in my contact list.
give it a whirl. it will be a bit different.
enjoy.
Thanks Draginmagik (sportbike rider?) I had already thought out what I wanted to ask while at work and only had time to ask while on lunch. Figured Id get some input from some people who had used both but your input is appreciated to. I forgot about dialer one. That is one of my favorite things about the dialer I have. I tried Dialer One on The moment but couldn't get it to come up with the green button. I guess thats not a problem with the evo.
A few things ive noticed in Fresh 3.2 Vs Cyanogen mod is that...
Fresh's battery life (by itself, no kernal flashed) is by far the best of any of the ROMS ive used.
I like the sense camera sooooooo much more than the default android camera so thats a no brainer for me.
I do like the AOSP call history though, its much easier to navigate to and through.
Overall, im running Cyanogen right now but ill probably go back to Fresh later tonight... the battery difference is amazing.
Reading a little more I don't see where Sprint vvm / weird text message is there or not. I hated that on the Hero AOSP roms. Also want to get opinions on GPS as i need it to work at the end of this week. I will be flashing this tonight, just want to get some feedback so dont need the "just try it" post. Again, Im just trying to get a comparison so I know what to look for faster after I flash to be sure I like it before I head home this weekend. Once I get on the road and get back home, phone playtime is over until I get caught up at home . hahaha.

Have you tried Kings ASOP kernrel? Im using #3 BFS and its great if I dont use the phone but it seems to suck down pretty quick when the phone wakes up. I'm over the battery thing, I just started carrying my usb cable in my back pocket and hit up a usb plug when I see one. lol But thanks for the info. Ill keep an eye on that too.

Can you explain the difference? I just figured out on the Fresh camera that if you touch the screen it focuses on that spot. Awesome feature. Wish my real camera did that.

not sure how the stock CM6 kernel is. a few days ago the CM6 nightly was upped to the .34 kernel. the custom ROM's are mostly on the .32 kernel still. i ran Kings on CM and it was 'ok'. the UI was smooth but the battery life reminded me of my previous stock kernels. perhaps as he rolls out more kernels that will be adjusted.
Cyanogen wrote the camera app in CM6. it also has the point touch focus. it has been much improved from the default aosp camera.

All nanded up and flashed and restored most of my apps. Pandora sounds great. Ill test it in the shop but in the hotel its loud! I didn't Know that was a feature.
I liked the look of the dialer until the phone rang. YUK!
Im trying to finish up my Manup them but not sure if the ZIP I already have for the notification bar will work with CM6
The camera work good so far, as long as the pictures take good im OK with that. I hate 3d gallery, always have. its on my list of things to fix.
I downloaded the one in the link. Your on nightlys right? do they seem stable enough for you? whats the best way to try those out? The github link is kinda over my head.

Cant forget having the ability to zoom while recording video. That's one of the big pluses of CM.
Well I found that the stock notification bar zip that I had on file won't work. I got the little blue android of death. After a quick reflash of cm6 all is well. still need that manup theme.
i'm on the 9/15 nightly. i think it was the 'swipe away items from the notification bar' feature or maybe a camera update that got me to flash up from the CM6final.
running it with -snap 7.6bfs kernel
currently, the CM6nightlys have slowed down so you just kinda keep an eye on the thread for nifty new features or updates...other than that, it's been very very stable for me since well before CM6final was released.

Deleting my post. I believe the ramdisk needs to be different.
Hi.
Excuse my ignorance, but trying to find out how to update stock kernel to this.
Tried searching, but rather new to Android and there seems to be a lot of varuois advise.
Am I to understand that all I need to do is download for example the pershot kernel, put it on my SD and make a fastboot update? Since it contains a "boot.img"
Or is ADB involved?
Simply put, how would I upgrade my "old" stock kernel?
And before upgrading, how would I go ahead and backup my old. Nandroid?
Thanks for your time.
If your sig is current, then your first step should be to S-Off. Check one of the stickies.
Then the easiest way to go about updating the Kernel/doing a backup would be to grab Rom Manager off the Market and flashing ClockworkMod.
Thanks alot for the kernals everything works on desire z fine fm radio etc..
the only problem i am having is the phone freezes if i set the max fre over 1094 mhz on set cpu it allows over clocking to over 1400 mhz right? well i am a proper noob though so maybe i am doing something wrong? i need to change a setting perhaps? or maybe this kernal is not for overclocking ?
thanks
or maybe i am just unlucky and 1094 mhz is the max my phones cpu can handle since every cpu is unique?
Random black-screen on wake-up
Tried both 1.2 and 1.3, same problem.
The issue is: When I wake up my phone from sleeping( either using Power Button or D-Pad), I have random chance to get a black screen. It's special, unlike those "freeze black-screen", the "home,MENU,Back,Search" buttons below the screen light up normally, open the keyboard and the backlight will turn on too ,but not the screen, it just remain black.
When I press the PowerButton again, the screen light up for about 0.1s (I can see the lock screen) then back to sleep.
Sometimes I have to press the Powerbutton several times get the screen on. but sometimes it works just fine.
I have no problem with the "Unmodified kernel" from ROM Manager, but when using these two kernels, it happens again.
Is there any solution or similar case?
Just installed the CM kernel on my DZ with stock sense rom. Everything seems to work perfectly. Setcpu works great with it. I can OC to 1.5ghz with small steps.
What are the difference in between the kernels??
Using 1.3 atm and no problems at all whatsoever. However I would like to know the differences in between kernels. Does anyone know?
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I can confirm this black screen on wake up as reported by jzhyok while I am test running right now the CM 1.3 kernel on my german DZ with unmodified Sense ROM, perm root, s-off.
I used setcpu with 1.5ghz and 1.2ghz with same results, just in case this could make a difference.
One more thing. My DZ instantly froze when I changed the governor from on demand to smartass in setcpu while I was at 1.5ghz with this CM 1.3 kernel, so I removed battery and now stay with the on demand governor.
Any fix for this anoying black screen wake up problem and any hint for the smartass governor? Which governor would be better, on demand or smartass?

It's a good time to be a desire owner these days.
The roms just keeps popping out day after another.
Question is, which one is the fastest, most stable, best one?
I think a poll is in place.
Please only vote if you've actually tried them all.

Happy flashing!
Tried 2 of them robo and Baadnewz v similar but TBH no video camera,no trackball wake then none of them is the ****
InsertCoin v1 was running very sweet for me but for some reason updated versions caused problems, probably my fault couldn't be bothered with a full wipe currently using RCMix Sv08 very happy with that apart from the 2 points mentioned above and the lack of a menu function to swap from 2G to 3G easily signal,GPS,battery life all great compass i think borked but i never use it
I selected the rcmix S, because for now it's the only one I tested, and what I can say is that it is really fast for normal use. Compared to version rcmixHD
For other ROMs, they seem to be all good as each other. The developers follow the well updated and are listening to users. The user feedback at speed and bug are equivalent for all roms.
You guys did a great job! Thank you for all your work for our small desires.

Yes, as you noticed there are almost no differences in our roms, what i can see when i diff the roms is that only thing changed is the ril and some apps removed from insertcoin... so i dont know what is causing lag in my rom :/ strange... should be the same... It can be the plurk which he removed and i still have in my rom (possible memory leak in that app), i will check that when i come back from my vacation, now i am working on A2SD version of v08.

well i don't know where the lag appears, i changed the rils, modded init.rc, changed all wpa related files with the ones from gb leak in an effort to fix some wifi problems, i removed some files, fonts, and moved lib_s to /system/lib.
Problem with my roms later than v01 is flash player 10.2, problem that is also on my froyo roms. and i have no clue how to fix it, thou in robo's roms the problem doesnt exists, plurk i removed from v04 so users should tell if that did the trick or not.
And as mentioned before, robocik did the hard - porting - hacking part. without this we wouldn't have a sense 2.1 rom.
btw, anyone have a clue why compass is acting strange? not that i ever use it, but some users need it
Hmmm its too difficult to compare 3 roms...coz me n baadnewz using same base even features is 100% same...only difference between tweaking n optimization...
But my vote for RCmixS coz robo is the first person who port sense 2.1 Rom...

I am trying to flash my Inc with a new ROM for the first time, but it seems like more than half the ROMs on this page are either removed by the developer or cant be downloaded because the download links are dead.
Any tips on what to try first, based on what available still? The only thing I am concerned with is that the ROM is stable and compatible with as many of the stock functions as possible, stuff like broken radios is not what I am looking for right now. Would be kinda cool to try one as different from stock as possible. Does CM7 work well on the Inc? I keep seeing people talking about stuff that is broken with it.

Abduction is good to try if you want to experice ice cream.... but prepare for some bugs and missing features ( ie Camcorder, camera, & flash on websites and netflix) I suggest one of the gingerbread Roms or Froyo Roms. CM 7 or 8 should be fine, but you loose some of the things you may be accustomed to in Sense (Widgets). But there are pretty good apps that can do what sense does, you just have to look for them.
I'm using CM 7.2 RC1 (RC2 crashes right away for me) with latest ICS Incredikernal and SmartassV2 governor, fully over-clocked. Never crashes, everything works but, of course, 720p recording. I even found decent settings for auto-brightness (Make about 16 levels, start out at ~70, go up in ~5 point increments, then increase. Set Window Length to 5 secs). I have tried three ICS roms but always went back.
I'm using the new Go Launcher but it has a couple of bugs. Clear its data to get the large icons if you are stuck on small. To change settings on the large weather clock you have to do it via the small weather clock.
I use CyanogenMod 7.2. Along with Chad/Tiny's Incredikernel, Jermaine/Tiny's EXT4All mod, and Launcher Pro. Speedy and battery efficient. The latest RC should be fine, I'm on one of the nightlies and have been using Pons' KANGs when his computer was still working.
In addition to Sonny Sekhon's Ice Cream Sandwich CM7 Theme.
If you like the stock ROM, and want something stable and based off of it, Liberation 3.0 is a good choice. It is basically a rooted, debloated, stock ROM. I keep a copy on my SD card incase I need access to EPST or just feel like using Sense.
ICS is getting there, but the laggy animations and general speed have kept me away. It seems to me that the current hardware acceleration isn't 100% implemented. But I have never used ICS outside of the Incredible. So I don't have room to compare.
I'm with the majority here. CM 7.2 RC2 is great. I actually have stock kernel though, I am not sure if performance is better with incredikernel but I can tell you that CM7 is TONS better than stock in terms of battery life, customization, and overall android experience. I like sense but on the Inc, it's like they stopped trying...
P.S. - I also use GO Launcher EX with kovdev's ICS theme.
Well I just switched from Abduction to CM9 and so far CM9 is much better!!

See if Youtube works. Didn't for me. I ended up using the Go Launcher anyway so the experience was the same for me. There weren't as many stock apps like Car Home and the music widget is not the big one. Things like Phone and Calculator open slowly. Never did crash tho or even lag.
Hi, I am new to XDA and was looking for some links to the cm9 rom for DINC. I am currently running aokp_inc_build-25 and its nice but I have had some issues with it specifically with the camera not working properly.
Thank you in advance for the assistance.

I use a app called play on for YouTube Netflix and a lot of other video sites.. yea the camera fix seems to break playback on YouTube.. but I'm optimistic that those issues will be worked out since cm9 is still in development. What I love is that every feature u find in other Asop roms u can get apps that do that... so u can customize it better for your own personal taste and still have better stability!!!!!

Ok before I started getting replies here I dl'd Touch of Blue and Stock+, tried ToB for the week and it was ok but started to crash and lag a lot. The latter may have been due to my SetCPU settings, I dunno, but it was getting hung up on simple apps, and I did not like a couple things about it, like getting calls when the screen is off required you to unlock it, then unlock it again at the receiving call screen. Also didnt like the battery meter.
Just installed Stock+ and immediately realized it wouldn't work at all when I saw that the App Data partition was still at 150MB. Thats the whole reason I rooted, so there is no way I am using a ROM that is eventually gonna give me the Low space messages again.
GOnna try the ones you guys suggested now
I like Wildstangs stock ROM, and gtiny's kernel. I used root app delete to debloat it. And run the on demand deadline settings and can go 11 hours on a full charge with heavy use.
I also like the last stable release of CM7.1.0 it is smoking fast and way less issues then the nightlies or kangs to me.

CM7.2 couldn't figure out how to add my Google account. Also couldnt disable the camera shutter sound.
Tried Liberation but the App Data partition is still only 150MB; as soon as I restore my apps its gonna be out of space again.
ALL ROMs for the Incredible are going to have a 150 MB data/data partition. It's the way HTC made it. The only way around it is with the EXT4All mod. More information here. The file you're looking for to remove the limit is "Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.zip".
And there is an options in the CM7 sound settings to disable the shutter sound. Called "Mute camera shutter".
Ok I found the camera sound setting, thanks. Any advice on getting the Google account to work? The Account settings were trying to setup an email thing, not my Google account
EDIT:
Figured out that I need to flash the Google apps pack on CM7 to get that all to work, but ClockworkMod kept failing to mount the pack when I tried to install it. Now I am back on Liberation, because at least here I have my Google account with contacts, but I cannot get the EXT4 fix to work. I download it, open it with Clockwork, tell it to reboot and apply, but it fails to mount it, just like the Google apps pack problem. Using Clockwork 5.0.2.0
