Desire HD can't get into bootloader - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings,
I am wondering if anyone has experienced an issue where it's impossible to get the phone to go into bootloader with the Volume - and Power Buttons. My DHD just boots up. I'm on Desire Revolution ROM 2.0.1 with S-Off. The only way I can get into bootloader is with adb.
Am I using the wrong button combinations? I've only had the phone for a few days and I assumed the way to get into bootloader would be the same as my Nexus One.
Maybe someone could point me in the right direction if I'm doing something obviously stupid

That is the correct button combination. Are you pressing them at the same time or do you hold Volume Down then press power?

restart the phone
when the capacitive buttons light is off immediately press and hold volume - button and keep holding until device is in bootloader
cheers

Also remember that your DHD doesn't actually turn off when you turn it off. You need to disable HTC FastBoot, Settings > Applications > Untick "FastBoot".

Andy,
That fixed the problem. Thank you very much.

Thanks! that did the trick for me 2!!

Try removing the battery for a minute. Then volume down + power button.
Was it rooted? Go into the rom first and uncheck fastboot. Settings, power.

If it's not where I mentioned it would be, then see if you can find it somewhere else. Just uncheck fastboot.

In what state is your phone at the moment?

If you had adb enabled install.android-sdk and propper drivers then turn on phone and connect it to pc/laptop and try to reboot it in bootloader through adb .
This only works if:
1. Your phone has adb debugging ennabled
2. Your pc can see the device attached (command: adb devices)
Hope this helps

[Q] Bricked DHD - can't access hboot or anything else

Hi all,
i got my hand on bricked Desire HD which seemes to be stucked in sw update loop.
The story goes like this:
Owner of this DHD got notification that ROM update is available ("the official one")
He choose to update it and aparently he did "everything by the book"
After 1st reboot it got to the update loading screen which stuck on aproximatly 30% and didn't move a bit. what he did after, i don't know.
The problem is:
when connected to charge it turns on after a few min. and goes to the loop
after removing battery and connecting it to charger it does it again
But the biggest problem is that when you hold vol down + power button just before phone turns on (after removing battery, returning battery and connecting to charger) it doesn't go to HBOOT but just goes to dam update loop
Can anyone help please, the image of stuck screen is in the attachment of this thread
Can anyone help please
Did anything similar happened to anyone else?
Update maybe corrupted. Take sdcard to pc and remove update.zip from sdcard or format it, if phone included with sdcard. Try boot phone with power and vol+ press down without sdcard?.
Try flash phone PD98IMG.zip "download newest RUU, open it and go to temp folder "C:\Users\****\AppData\Local\Temp\{EFF37DC5-1DC7-478F-B64E-447807C64D80}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B} in windows 7", find rom.zip, rename it PD98IMG.zip, put it into sdcard root, boot phone with power and vol- press down".
You can correct me if i was wrong on this matter

Thank you for replying but i already tried every methot to enter hoboot or fastboot with or without sd card nor with stock PD98img.zip on the sdcard
Today i found out that this phone is example model and is labeld E30183
Hi,
by holding vol up + power button phone vibrates 3 times and turns on led(green on my Desire and orange on desire HD) i presume that this is some kind of programing interface because my PC reckognized device as a qualcom cdma technologies msm device.
I can't find correct driver or any info with which app should i connect to device and reflash it.
I have already searched trough this forum so if i missed something please provide link to thread
BIG HELP WOULD BE IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO PROGRAM, FLASH OR ANYTHING IN THIS CONNECTION MODE
i GOT TO IT LIKE THIS:
1. i POWERED OFF MY DEVICE
2. PRESS AND HOLD VOL UP
3. PRESSED POWER BUTTON
4. AFTER THIS PHONE VIBRATED 3 TIMES AND NOTIFICATION LED TURNED ON
5. i CONNECTED USB CABLE
6. DESIRE HD WAS DETECTED BY MY PC AND SHOWN IN DEVICE MANAGER JUST LIKE IN ATTACHMENT OF THIS POST
THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE
I thought the Desire HD is just like the inspire. Can you volume down and power button at same time to enter hboot without pluggin phone into computer? If so see if its s-off (rooted) or s-on (not rooted). You might be trying to flash a non rooted stock rom on a rooted phone or a rooted rom on a non rooted phone. We are not supposed to accept OTA updates on rooted phones, screws phone up.
Thank you Reinaldo33897 for replying but you did not read carefully my posts!
Look at the image in the 1st post - that is all you can get on this phone and no
1. you can not access hboot or fastboot by pressing vol down + power button,
2. there is no reading update from sdcard
All that you can access on this phone is by pressing vol up + power button after it phone vibrates 3 times and flashes led. Then you can connect phone to pc to be detected.
I presume that this is some programming interface but i need to find driver or some appliction to access either system partitions or console so i can remove/edit script that is preventing me from accessing hboot/fastboot
I have tried every thing - combination - to access any of the functions of this DHD. Unfortunatly nothing worked. If anyone can help or provide link to the solution i'd be wery greatful.
Only way you can connect this phone to PC is to hold volume up and press power button and after it vibrates 3 times and flashing orange led you can connect it to PC to be detected. The phone is visibile as a Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM in device manager. I have read somewhere that this is Qualcom debuging interface but couldn't find any software to connect trough it.
PLEASE IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION OR SOFTWARE PROVIDE A LINK OR ANYTHING
THANK YOU ALL WERRY MUCH

SOLVED
Hi all!
I have solved the problem!
As this was some kind of prototype it had diferent HW and update procedures so it stucked in update loop without any usable interface to program. It had diferent motherboard inside so it took my friends 2 h to connect to it and repair it trough Riff.
If any of you ever get any phone that is not stock by aperance DO NOT TRY TO DO ANY KIND OF UPDATE WITHOUT FINDING ALL THE POSSIBILE INFO ON THAT PHONE. THE WORST THING IS THAT THESE KIND OF THE PHONES HAVE SPECIFIC RADIO IMAGE
I did some experimentations on my old Desire and kept bricking it and only unbickable situation was when i forced wrong radio image. Every other brick combination leaves fastboot interface so it can be fixed
P.S. DO NOT SCREW UP BOOTLOADER AND/OR RADIO
This thread is for closing so forum admin please do so.

I have same problem, but I found a way to go to the bootloader by pressing volume down + power then leave the power button but don't take your finger off the volume down until it boot, but it could takes about 5-10 minute until the device boot, the bad news is the bootloader is not responding, and you can't use
volume buttons or power button to choose anything from the bootloader menu.
Is there any way to recover the phone without using RIFF??
Thanks

You have not bricked your phone....a brick is a brick. If the phone turns on and you can access the bootloader, then you might be able to solve your issue.
In your specific case, you have messed your bootloader up by flashing either ENG S-OFF or a froyo hboot to your GB shipped phone. That can be fixed..takes time but it is fixable...

[Q] Unable to Boot Wildfire S

i tried to install an update of ROM on my wildfire S..

here is the link to ROM update that i was trying to install
dl3.htc.com/application/sync/htc_sync_3.01.573.2_us_cellular.exe

and one more thing. its orage lite on front screen starts flashing when i plug in the charger/data cable. i check the battery voltage, they're 4.02v, so i guess the battery is full charged. if i remove the battery and the reinstall it.. the orange lite doesn't blink unless i put the charger again.
i've gone through other threads that seems to have same problem but i could not understand much of the terms used in those.. so plz i need a detailed help
Can you feel 3/5/7 vibrates when holding power button?
What did you try to do actually?
It's a phone sync software and not a ROM update which you have mentioned.
It seems that there might be problem with your battery. Check it first.

Did you root phone earlier? or
Is your phone's Bootloader unlocked?
If your bootloader is unlocked and your device rooted, install CWM Recovery via ADB, then download your ROM as a ZIP and install using CWM.
If you're not unlocked/rooted, do that first, again via ADB.

i guess the phone it is now useless because another guys says that
"Its bricked if you cant boot to hboot with vol-d + pwr. Srry only way is to send to htc"
so i guess that's the end of it
today i pressed both vol + and down and pressed power button.. the phone gave 7 vibrations and its LED turned on.

ok..you never install a PD98IMG file in recovery unless you want to mess your device. Boot the phone normally, go to menu>settings>power options and untick fastboot.
Then power off the device and turn it on by pressing power + volume down
Where's fast boot located in 4.2.2 ROMs

Thanks for the reply glevitan.
I don't have the "power options" option.
Nothing special happens when pressing power + volume down. It simply reacts to my pressing of the power button and offers me the usual shut down, reboot, silent, aeroplane mode etc.

1. I don't understand what you're asking and why. Could you clarify? Like, where the binaries are saved? And is there a reason you're asking?
2. You're kind of hijacking someone else's thread on a completely unrelated topic. You might want to consider creating a new Q&A thread.

lol.. i meant the bootloader. Thank god you corrected me..
You can use the adb to reboot to bootloader. Just go to terminal, cmd whatever, type "adb reboot bootloader".. And you can flash radio using fastboot command.. But you need to be s-off.. I am not sure whether it is possible to flash radio using shipped hboot. I think it is possible. But better to wait for glevitan to clear things up. :good:

My advice is that you fix the volume rocker first. If you get stuck flashing a radio and your rocker is messed...then you might get stuck in the splash screen...
It broke a while ago. I bought a new rocker and glued it on. The glue set and stuck, disabling the up volume button only. I won't be able to fix this now I've ruined it!

[Q] DHD is dead? No bootloader anymore

Who think he/she can help me?
I was trying to completely clean my DHD for my girlfriend. So I wiped is all off via all the information on this forum.
Tried to flash ROM, RUU, Bootloader and Kernel. (after some advices)
Now I have a big problem I think....
I cannot get into my bootloader anymore, my DHD is starting with HTC logo and then continues with Android startup and keep hanging in there.
Vol. down + Power is not getting me into bootloader.
Flashing from CMD does not seem to work either because I cannot get the DHD to connect via USB. (cable is connected to DHD and laptop)

I pulled my battery for about 8 hours, so the length of pulling does not seem to be issue.
But again thanks for helping to find a solution.

what i know is accessed to the phone bootloader it just have two optional way..
first...with pressing and hole volume down+power
second..with adb command while the phone is already booting inside the rom..and off course with already enabling USB debugging too in system settings..
if both way doesn't work to access your bootloader...i think the last change is you must flashing it again the from beginning with RIFF BOX hardware and JTAG software if you have it..or take the phone to services center of HTC..
sorry...can't help more than this..

If you can help me.... my girlfriend and I would be much gratefull.

I am gonna look where to get this software.
Going to a HTC service centrer wont help I think..... Isnt it like "changing the software yourself will exclude HTC help"??

yap..RIFFBOX is a flashing hardware..
yes i know..if you already broken your phone cause of changing software by your self..htc will not recover your phone under they warranty
you already had loosing your phone warranty.. but i think that's not mean they can't help and fix your phone..off course without warranty (if they already know or detected that you already fault your warranty) then they will charge you with some of cost..
if so..with the hope of luck..then you can try brought your phone to the htc service center..then let they're analyst your phone and make decision about your valid warranty..who knows you already lucky then they don't know what are you already do it previously to that phone..
note : this all mean that's if your DHD is still recover under warranty by time..right..
hopefully your DHD will fixed soon..and good luck..

I suppose it depends on what do you mean by "go into bootloader". Usually PC is not required to start HOV in the bootloader. All you have to do is to hold volume down button pressed while turning on the phone. Please be more specific if this is not what are you trying to do.
Edited: oh sorry for my post, I didn't read all this thread carefully enough. Try searching here, if I do not mistake again I've seen similar issues mentioned already.

Hi Dante,
please can you provide what Operating system the computer you plug the phone into is running, whether you have installed the ADB and Fastboot tools, as well as whether the phone uses a SIM card as well. Also whether you can reboot the phone at all, by pressing the power button.
If you can turn it right off and then turn it on while holding volume down, then write down the HBOOT version and Radio number to provide here as well. If possible find out from your friend what what ROM he was trying to install. The more info you can give us the more specific we can be with the help.
As mentioned earlier it sounds just like a kernel issue. So with this information we should be able to help you easily.
