Just curious...you do know that accepting the update will cause you to lose your root, right?
I'm not trying to accept the OTA. I'm trying to download one of one's on here. That's when it keeps happening. Any ideas?
I swapped out the SD card and it works now..
If you hook up to computer and mount sd card as disk, go to properties, tools, error checking... Check first box that says fix errors or something and run it, should take less than a minute, that should fix it
Thank you

I had this problem, then i googled it. I'll give you a hint, it's got something to do with read-only.

What a helpful response....pffft.
i thought it had to do with the update that was released shortly after the phone came out
heres the post for the update
no I had this awhile back and googled it and fixed it in 15min
check the 'read only' permissions on the sd card
Currently have this issue...
After updating to Fresh EVO 3.1.0.2 I have not been able to use my camera due to 'insufficient file permissions'. I have 4.5 gB free on my 8 gB card. I used my ROM Manager 'Fix Permissions' utility to attempt to correct this.
The problem could have started when I changed my Recovery from Clockwork to RA Recovery in getting my phone to tether. Tethering is more important than a camera, but I want both.
I have taken the advice of searching Google for a solution, but have not found one yet.
Any suggestions...?
Thanks.
I had this problem yesterday. Turns out one of the files I had copied we re corrupt. I took out the card from phone used a sd card adapter, and windows immediately recognized it as corrupted and deleted the file. Windows did not do this when I connected via phone.

If your cards properties aren't set to read only I fixed my problem by copying everything off the card formating it and moving everything back to the card and cleared up all my problems.
Hi everyone, looking for a little guidance.
Phone: Android G1 (Rogers Canada Dream) running Cyanogen 4.2.15.1, been running fine since 4.2.6.1
Removed SD card while it was on and it rebooted... when it restarted it showed no applications and said the SD card was inaccessible and required a format. After rebooting a few times with no success I bit the bullet and formatted it... all apps are gone except for the ones that are on that image for Cyanogen. I have no market app to download new apps and when I plug it into my PC and mount it I don't see it show up as a drive like it did so I have no way to get the apps back on.
Has anyone had this happen before? Phone still works but I need to get it back to a state where I can get access to the SD and install the market... Any suggestions appreciated!!
Might have corrupted the SD card. If u did then u will have to get a new one and start all over. Do u have a file manager that can show what's on your SD?

Thats the problem, I have no file manager on the phone now, I see the SD card is fine, I can take pics and videos and store them on it and view then now... I assume when I removed the SD card because it was mounted might have corrupted it. So now I cant put anything on it, access it or even go to the market to get a file manager...
U can't even save what's on your SD to your computer either I assume. You might be stuck with getting a new one and see what happens. Would be a good time to make the jump to 5.0.8 or even froyo. (Only good way to look at it). hope u get it fixed.

so just as stated in subject, that's what it says when I reboot my phone, what's it mean and how do I fix this? my phone is rooted buy, thanks in advance for any and all help
Ok so quick fix is to unmount and remount SD card that gets rid of the icon on notifications but when I look under astro it says no directory and under settings then under phonetamd SD storage it it still says unavailable for phone storage. Help please, phone works fine but this is just bothering me. Phone is rooted and running several different Roms but this just started a couple days ago.
I also just started getting this the other day after flashing Incredibly Re-Engineered Z.... when I mount my phone on my computer it only shows my SD card and I constantly get the preparing phone storage checking for errors msg. I flashed a few dif roms and received this msg in all of them.
That's exactly my problem other than hooking to my computer, I switch around on ROMs all the time, just get bored easily and just the other day started getting that popping up. Have you fixed yours yet?
This is nothing, its completely normal.

Yea I just fixed it.... flash a new rom and format go in to settings/SD and phone storage and format phone storage. You'll loose everything you have saved on your phone like pictures and music.
Lol, you don't fix this. The phone is just checking your SD card for errors simple as that. Comes up every time you reboot your phone.

OK I did the reformat message is gone, if this is normal y would it stay on for 2 days? Should it take that long to check for errors?
"Checking Phone Storage" is normal. "Checking for errors" is not.
This has been determined to be caused by early releases of the Incredibly Re-Engineered Z ROM
Check that thread for the solution. I believe it was to reformat Internal storage
"Checking for errors" will come up if you have a "funky" partition on the sd card too. Found that out after swaping sd cards 3 times lol
My SD CARD recently has been giving me some issues. It has worked fine since I got the phone in Aug 2010. I went to access my pictures yesterday and as they started popping up, an SD card picture popped up and said please insert SD card. No pictures could be accessed. I went to phone and SD storage and it said my SD card was unmounted. I went to mount it when I saw this, pressed mount, started to mount and stopped all of a sudden. Now I have an icon of an SD card with a question mark in my taskbar. The message says" SD card damaged. You may have to reformat it." When I go to reformat it, it gives me the message "external media in unknown state". Any ideas?

What's the point in posting a question if you don't get help?

Because you need to give us more than 3 hours to help you. Being impatient and bumping your thread like this makes people NOT want to help you.
i wish someone could please help me with this issue because its also happening to me, it happend twice already on two different sd cards, i even took the sd card out and put it into my Samsung Epic but still it says the sd card is blank . please help
I used to get this message way back in June 2010 when I first bought my Evo. It happened exactly as you are describing. I thought my SD card was bad. So I moved all my contents to my PC, formatted the SD card, then moved the contents back. It may have been coincidence, but it helped, for a little while, and then the exact same problem returned.
All this happened before I had ever rooted. I then rooted my phone, installed a custom rom, and have never had the problem again, even though it was the exact same SD Card.
Are either of you who are having this problem currently rooted? Or are you both stock? If you are stock, you could try rooting, and installing the stock rom. If you aren't comfortable with that, then try formatting the card, and if you have a spare microSD try that just to troubleshoot it. If you get the same result with a different card that you know is good, that will narrow it down to being related to software on the phone.

I had a similar issue, I reformatted my memory card, and the problem has not returned. It has been seven months since then.
If you are formatting it on a mac, make sure that you set the partition type correctly to MBR (Master Boot Record)
Okay, I updated to 2.3.5 europe just last week using the RUU extracted installer. All was well and lovely until two days ago.
My SD card has gone crazy. As soon as I unmount and remount the SD card, the phone reads the SD card in a really weird way. The app drawer shows only a few apps that are installed. Majority of apps that I had on the SD card have now vanished - but are still installed because my internal memory is the same - and they still appear in applications list. It says it doesn't exist?
I've rebooted my phone, hard reset, factory reset, format SD card.. everything you can name, I've TRIED IT. Every time I reboot the phone it happens. apps disappear into a black hole. Also, I've reinstalled all apps thrice and cba to do it again! It says "failed to move application" for most apps at first when I try to move them with the App2SD app.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Should I revert back to my old ROM?
Is there a way to fix this? My phone is S-ON, no root.
EDIT: Now I cannot even unmount the SD card...
I had a MAJOR problem where the phone stopped recognizing the SD card. It would literally say unavailable and wouldn't recognize ANY cards at all.

Have you taken out the SD-card and put it back again? Sometimes the phone gets bad connection to the card and "exercising" it may help.

I've tried everything, even changed back from Sandisk to my samsung SD card. Same problem, it keeps rebooting at times and eventually stops and works perfectly.
Really REALLY annoying. It must be the ROM.
Just use Jik's salsa ROM, it runs really smoothly, frees up memory via link2sd and has new lock screen.
Then install the v6 supercharger and battery calibrator for a really great experience with this phone.
Get an XTC Clip and become S-Off, it's great.
