Hey guys,
Just wondering if you guys know if the desire HD can connect to ad-hoc networks as standard? If not is there a way to enable it?
Thanks!
Bump to this, I wish to end my brother's monopoly over the AR Drone... I've got a couple of AR Drone applications, but need ad-hoc supported. Seen a couple of guides (like this one: http://www.ott.net/knowledge/htc-desire-adhoc/ ) to get ad-hoc enabled on the regular Desire, if anyone knows of something like this for the DHD that would be great.
If you flash this file for the Desire Z, ad-hoc works fine.
Although, DHCP wasn't really working when I created an ad-hoc connection in Windows 7. I eventually got it working by enabling Internet Connection Sharing.

try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866676
(i have the dhd) I patched this but now I can see the ad-hoc but I can't connect
Yes... I specifically got it working by enabling Internet Connection Sharing in Windows 7. This must've assigned some IP addresses or something. I suggest you manually assign IP addresses and see if that helps.
Any success on this yet ???????

I have finally managed to control my AR Drone with my HTC DESIRE HD and INCREDIBLE S almost just like an iPhone would connect to Ar Drone without any PC`s involved.
Here is how to do it !!!!

Hi,
I know that today there will be quite some luck new owners
When I read the specification from HTC:
http://www.htc.com/www/product/desire/specification.html
It says:
Tethering
* Internet sharing through USB

Does the HTC Desire has default app for that already installed?
Or we still have to find / buy from Market?

It would have to be installed, otherwise I would expect there to be a footnote saying that it is not included in the package.
If they were going to list every feature that was added by installing market apps, the list would be at least 10,000 lines long
With HTC Hero it was included and worked pretty well. So it'll be at Desire as well, as it's part of Sense.
tethering means using the phone's data plan to access the internet from the PC ... correct? and that does not mean the other way around?

Correct. It's an alternative to a mobile broadband USB dongle and much cheaper if you have an unlimited data plan.
would love wifi tethering, that would be awesome! i had it on a hacked rom of my G1, and that was excellent!
Ah thanks ... nice one if it is part of the HTC Sense package

Here is how it works,
Connect phone to PC with USB, The connect to a PC icon comes up, select Internet Sharing.
Simples
Can you also do it connecting by Bluetooth?
works great and quite fast.
Bubbles ( other poster used simples already )
You can only tether via USB at this point. Maybe when Desire gets proper root, we can use Wireless Tethering
and for mac?
will tethering be available on OS X? 10.6 (snow leopard)?
Evening all,
This may be a noddy question, but having just got my shiny new Desire and plugged it into my laptop for the first time and selected 'Internet sharing' it connects to the PC ok, but doesn't connect to the network on T-Mobile (UK).
Any ideas on how / if it's possible to sort this - or is this possibly one of the reasons release was delayed, so they could lock it down unless you've specifically subscribed to use your phone as a usb modem?
This always worked fine on my T-Mobile MDA IV/Touch Diamond, but I was using one of Shaks' ROMs....

I works fine on Ubuntu, so I don't see why it wouldn't work on OS X.

Did you receive yours with the first bath (Saturday) or more recently? I somehow doubt they would delay release because of that as they could simply push OTA later.
Did you try other computer?
Now got laptop online through Desire
Mine arrived on yesterday (Monday). Trying to connect to a laptop running Windows 7. If I can't get this to work it'll be a major headache for me, as I used to use my touch diamond once or twice a week to go online when I was out and about.

Right, it was a noobie mistake - always helps to install the HTC sync software and drivers off the SD Card supplied in the phone first!
This installs the relevant drivers into Windoze and, hey presto, after un-mounting the SD Card and reconnecting the device using the 'Internet sharing' option I got a stable network connection from phone to laptop.
Peace and harmony restored once more

I can confirm this works excellently and with no effort at all on Ubuntu.
Just plug in your device on the USB and set it to Internet Connecting Sharing. Ubuntu detects it immediately.
It must be this easy on Mac I imagine.
I would be interested to know whether all ROMs can do it though, I'm unbranded

Hello,
can you please let me know how you managed to get it working with Snow Leopard ?
When I switch to tethering mode, I see a new modem ( I select generic & interface but I need to enter a login & password ( and also an accesspoint name & CID ) in order to connect.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.
I had a Touch Pro2 and dumped it for an EVO. I was so pissed when I found out Android doesn't support reverse tethering. I need my PC to give internet to my phone through the USB connection. No I cannot simply get WiFi. It is forbidden where I work (offshore). Does anyone know if reverse tethering works on WP7 like it did on WM6.5?
I've read that it does support it, but don't know how to test it.

Yup it works through Zune - just plug your WP7 phone in to your computer and open Zune, and reverse tethering occurs automatically ^__^
This is great news. I will definitely be buying a couple of HTC 7 Pros when they come to America.
Anyone want to buy an EVO and a Samsung Galaxy Epic on Sprint?

yes , it will work , you can easy test it by putting your phone in flight mode and then connect it the the pc , you will see that your internet explorer still works on the phone .
ps: and to make you real happy , I just tested it and it works perfect (don't need to do anything, just connect and sync with zune)
Does anyone got those two devices and can tell me if hotspot in Desire HD works with ASUS transformer? I know there are some problems with Ad-hoc type in Honeycomb ... not sure at all which type is used by our DHDs... Didnt use hotspot before ...
If someone would be so kind and could tell US if defualt Hotspot app in Desire HD works with ASUS Transformer TIA!!
PS. I`m asking becuase i`m thinking of buing TF ... but without 3G module i need to make sure that my DHD will provide hotspot for TF ... before final decission.
i think it should work. tried before with xoom and it works
It will definitely work. I've already tried it out. Works smoothly.
Another confirmation that it works. I use my HD as a hotspot and both mine and my coworker's Transformers can connect to it.
Thank u guys for Your replies!
Hi,
I was thinking to buy an HTC Media Link to make things easier to view my One-X on my HD TV. Can anyone confirm if it is currently working with the recent test builds of JB? also how does it connect to the One-X is it a direct wifi connection P2P or does both devices have to connect to my home router to enable them to send/receive content? The reason that i'm asking is to know if the HTC Media link will work in places that i have no Router connection available, such as in some hotel rooms or other places?
Thanx for all your advices....
It is connected through the home Wifi through the router so I think it will not work in a hotel?
I got one free fro htc back in June but rarely use it cos the lag is too much. Not sure about the current firmware though nv tried since June.

Whilst I'm not at liberty to discuss in detail the latest JB trial software for the One X - I will say that the Media Link HD has been reported as being very buggy whilst attempting to use it...'nuff said!
My One X is on ARHD JB leak, since putting this one it's no longer able to stream to the Media Link. I'm guessing as this is a leaked rom base HTC haven't yet released an updated firmware for the Media Link.
Having said that, I was less than impressed with the performance of my Media Link anyway. Hopefully the combination of new firmware and JB will improve things!
I guess you just have to wait for the proper JB release to enjoy some propper support from HTC as well
Well a long time ago I purchased just the MHL adaptor so that I could play content from my phone to hdtv. You have to also power the adaptor and of course your phone is then tried to the tv via the HDMI lead. But I also found that the phone battery votes flat while playing any content so the adaptor and power supply are not providing enough power to the phone. I was using the original 1A wall charger that came with my One-X.
But it does work well to allow me to use Skype on my hdtv and using my car screen mount to hold and position my phone for the back hi res camera.

I have a Media Link HD and it works flawlessly, no lag at all. 3 finger swipe up and it starts, 3 finger swipe down and it stops.
Specifically, the Media Link HD will work in both ways you mention. If there is no WiFi router available to connect through your One X will create an Ad-Hoc connection and stream to it that way. I've found that the JB leaks do not yet support the Media Link HD as upon connection, it notifies that there is a firmware update. Then when it tries to download this update it fails.
Thanx and so how does the media link connect to the router? Is it automatic or do you have to first configure it from a pc or directly from the One-X?
For my example if I'm in a hotel which has WiFi but via a web page interface to log in how would that work or in this case would the direct link between One-X and media link be the way to go?

It seems to set up an automatic ad hoc connection first, then the phone sends the infrastructure connection details to the media link through the ad hoc network. Both devices then drop the ad hoc network and connect to the infrastructure. So it is transparent. However I doubt it would work with a router webpage login.
If you are in a hotel with a webpage login then the media link would likely not gain internet access. However, it doesn't need that, so long as it can talk to the phone through the network. Saying that, if I were to configure a hotel access point, I would certainly set it up to block wireless inter-client communication at the router (to stop users hacking each others' computers). So in short it could work but most likely will be blocked.
Note that if the phone can't connect through infrastructure, it will automatically connect through an ad hoc connection. During this time the phone pretends to be connected to the infrastructure, so you may not even notice except that Internet access is lost.

I am also trying to get my M9 to connect and failing and have been in contact with HTC support and they are failing to be helpful too.
The Media link HD is broadcasting a wifi signal and if you connect to it via a pc/phone (assuming it's been reset to manufacturer) password is 1234567890HTC
IP address is 192.168.3.1 to login to the configuration menu that is as far as i'm able to get and I'm unable to update the media link or tell it to connect with another Wifi to update. I think part of the problem is the HTC M9 itself and not the media link.

Moab media link
So I actually just got off the phone with htc about the media link. I have talked with them 3 times in the last week to find out that the m9 in not compatible with the media link due to some new technology that hooks up with smart tvs so they said they were phasing out the media link. I am a bit irritated which I expressed to them but I guess is not the end of the world. On a different note, anyone having trouble getting there voice-mail going? Seems like an easy question but for some reason it keeps trying to get me to do the voice mail to text option which I am not interested in with no option to get my voice-mail started. Any info would be helpful.
Thx, Jasonbc
Shame on you HTC
Wow been screwed by HTC! Been a loyal HTC user for probably 14 years. I was a One M7 user and purchased the HTC Media Link HD device with it. Loved them both! When it was time for an upgrade I waited months for the M9 to be released because of Media Link. Now that I've purchased the M9 I discover that HTC has decided to go another direction with connect options and they've decided to abandon their loyal customers who spent nearly $100 for the Media Link device. This is unacceptable HTC. I will return this phone and tell everyone I know what you've done. Shame on you.

the libraries required would be a nightmare to port over to the 64 bit architecture

What would be a good alternative?
A lot of LED TV's have the possibility to stream directly to the TV so you don't need the medialink.
Also when you do not have a smart tv you can use chromecast to stream from your device.
