HTC EVO not booting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Evo stays in the white htc evo 4g screen and wont go to boot. How can I go to the recovery? I have taken out the battery and turned it back on while holding the power button and up volume key and it vibrates three times and wont go to the recovery. How can I fix this?

Hold the volume DOWN button, then press the power and keep holding volume down

Your going to have to flash a/the Rom your using over.
Assuming your rooted, pull the battery. Next, put it back in, and hold vol down along with power until you boot into bootloader mode (screen with skateboarding androids.) From there, select recovery (navigate with vol keys.) After, select flash zip from SD card. If your using RA Recovery, make sure the Rom is on the root of your SD card, if your using clockwork, you may find it in any folder that you placed it. Once imaging is complete, select reboot now.
If your not sure which Rom to select, I recommend JoeyKrim's 5.1 Rom. Stock, without lousyness. And if your not familiar with downloading roms, one note, do not extract them from the ".zip" format. Flash them as is.
Sorry for overloading you with this if you already know it. I'm just assuming you don't since you didn't try it yet.
Best of luck,
Rydah

Can't boot into recovery after new root method

After new 2.2 root method (thanks regaw_leinad), I can't boot into clockwork mod rom manager.
When I press Up+Power, it vibrates three times and nothing happens.
The screen stays off.
Pressing the power button does nothing.
I have to take the battery out to do anything.
I've booted into the manager before, because I had to install unrevoked-forever.zip from it.
What can I do?
Hold volume down while you press power.
Hey man how did you get your phone to come back on cause it just happend to me but now it wont turn back on.

Thanks.
Take the battery out. When you put it back in, do what bluehaze said.
So you're saying he was holding it wrong?
Raghh.
I just posted this in the Root Guide forum, unfortunately glad its not just me.,
I thought maybe using RomManager screwed it up by flashing my recovery.. just a thought
Try going into RomManager, and flashing alternative "ra-evo-v1.7.0.1" at the bottem of the screen.
I was able to get into recovery with that method.
*****
By doing that method i was able to go back and reflash clockworkmod and everything is golden.
Good luck to you

Brick or not Bricked that is the question?

While booting a back up of MIUI 1.1.28.1 my phone rebooted went through the process fine, then right after I got past the lock screen it shut off, and I couldn't turn it back on. Just before this I updated to the newest Clockworkmod 3.0.0.7. I thought my phone was done for so i let it sit for the night on the charger in the morning i tried to turn it on using the power and volume down button and it booted into recovery so I went along and tried a normal reboot, same thing got to the lock screen, powered down on it's own again. I've been trying to turn it on again now just to get it into recovery and maybe work with it there but it's not going for it. Any suggestions?
Since you can get to recovery screen it is not bricked. In general you can not brick by flashing a rom, only brick by flashing non-working radio or hboot
Here is how to fix it.
1) Download another ROM to the SD Cards. Pick a stable one, I recommend CM6.1
2) Boot into recovery and enter Clockworkmod
3) Wipe everything (Cache/Data/Dalvik cache)
4) Flash new rom in recovery
I got into recovery once after the initial shut dow, now i'm having the same problem as prior it simply will not turn on i've tried most combinations of the buttons and nothing seems to work any suggestions for getting it into recovery again? I realize that I need to boot another rom now but I need to get the phone on first haha. Thanks again
There's only one combination that should boot into recovery.
Turn it on holding down the volume up arrow. If it doesn't do that then you may have seriously messed up or even bricked your phone.

Volume down* up is qualcomm diagnostics. And that's to get into HBOOT, not recovery lol. Also, holding down on the optical trackpad works just the same as if you're holding volume down.

1) Enter Recovery
a. Pull the battery.. wait 10-30 seconds
b. Re-insert battery
c. Power and Volume DOWN with get you to white Hboot screen.
d. Volume down key to highlight recovery, then use press the power button to enter recovery.
2) You should now be in CWM Recovery. Now it is time to wipe everything.
a. Select "wipe data/factory reset"
b. Select "wipe cache partition"
c. Select "advanced" -> "wipe Dalvik Cache"
3) Now it is time to load a new stable ROM, ensure rom is load onto SD card. Recommend CM6.1
a. Use back button to return to CWM Recovery home
b. Select "install zip from sdcard"
c. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
d. Select the zip file rom you load on the SD card.
That should do it! Let me know if you need anything else.

This happened to me yesterday, and here is how I eventually fixed it.
Let the phone boot up as far as it would go.
Pluged in my USB to PC
Ran reflash_package.exe from unREVOlked
Booted up normally.
Hope this solves your issue.
John
Thanks everyone got it all figured out it ended up being something really simple I just jumped to thinking my phone was done for, thanks for all your help!
Slong427 could you let me know what your fix was? i have been plagued with this issue for two days now and any rom i try gets to the unlock screen and shuts down. thanks, ian

[Q] New ROM keeps re-booting

Hi,
I rooted my DHD today and tried to flash the CyanogenMod-7 for Desire HD & Inspire. It seemed to work but now keeps re-booting every couple of seconds. It won't actually stay on long enough to put another ROM on. Can anyone help? This is the first time I've done something like this and it seemed to be going so well!
Thanks!
Pull the battery for about 10 seconds. Then hold the vol- button down and power your device on. Now you should see a white screen with some text on it. Navigate to recovery and press the power button. Now it should boot into recovery.
In the recovery choose wipe data/factory reset ald let it finish. Once its finished choose wipe cache partition.
Then go to install .zip from sd and then choose zip from sd. Now search for your rom and reinstall it
Tapatalked with Tapatalk from my Desire HD using Tapatalk.
This is common. Simply wait for it to boot and power off or use the power button to select reboot. You only have to do it once.
The instructions for installing CM7 all say to install ROM then reboot after first complete start up. Shouldn't need to reinstall anything.
Having been left alone for a few hours it seems to have sorted itself out. Thanks! I just wasn't expecting it to spend quite so long re-booting.
I guess you have enabled wi-fi just after flash cm7. Seems like there is a bug or whatever, all you need is re-boot device after first boot.
And about the re-boot loop, just remove battery to turn off you device then turn it on, enter recovery and flash cm7 again WITHOUT do wipe operation. OK, In this time remember to re-boot after first boot.
I got a bit trigger happy and tried to flash Android Revolution HD 3.3. I did a full wipe from ClockworkMod Recovery and tried to install the zip, exactly like I did for the previous ROM. That kept aborting the installation so I mounted the phone and re-downloaded and copied it onto the SD card again. Same problem. I then tried to re-install cm7 and that also kept aborting.
I now have the message "Back menu button disabled" and if I use the power button to select anything it goes straight to a white triangle with an explanation and the Droid, which I think is stock recovery? I'm getting there from what I think is Clockwork though. Is this recoverable or have I managed to brick it?
I had a similar issue a few days ago - it turned out that the battery stats were screwed up so a fix for me was to boot into recovery and then wiping the battery stats.
Everything was fine after that.
How do I do that? I don't want to reboot out of Clockwork as I'm not 100% sure I actually have a ROM at the moment.
Can boot into menu. Highlight recovery. Press power button. Powers down, not completely though. Screen stays on slightly. When waiting 5 minutes and press power button boots into loop again.

Going to leave battery out for the night as read in other posts. Fixes the problem of not totally shutting down for some. Thanks.
Well leaving battery out didn't help. Continuous boot loop. Put on charger after turning off orange light came on and didn't go to green after 10 hours. Restarted when I got home and boot loop again. Had CoreDroid ROM installed. Working fine than tried to load Kalagas Mixed Theme and that is where I am now. Looping.
Even a blind squirrel will find a nut now and then. During HTC Hboot menu, noticed it was looking for PD98IMG zip. So I shut phone down. Inserted card with it on it and it restored to original firmware. PHEW. Hope this might help someone else.

[Q] Bricked my EVO

I don't have any faith this is repairable, but I thought I'd ask before I went on Craigslist and looked for a replacement. Here's the senario
bought a EVO and had it flashed to Boost Mobile, it worked fine but I wanted to put a better rom on it. When I bought it, it had Twopointtwo, which I really liked. After I got it flashed it was back to the stock Sprint rom. So I followed the TPT guide on here to a tee yesterday, I couldn't get the radio update to work, I got an error, but I decided I'd try installing the ROM any ways because if I have a problem I could just do a restore.
The phone was getting stuck on the EVO boot screen, I let it sit there for about an hour. So I went into recovery and wiped everything and tried again, When I installed TPT and rebooted I got the phone icon with the arrow and circle around it. I tried power and vol up or down, nothing. so I did a battery pull. Now when I press the power, nothing.
I did a battery pull, took the SD card out, when I hook it to a USB my Windows 7 isn't detecting anything. My gut's telling me it's bricked and there's nothing I can do. But maybe I'm wrong? One thing is, I can't remember if the radio update took or didn't take when I tried to re-flash it this morning.
Copy the contents of your SD card to your computer. Afterwards, using a card reader or your computer, format the SD card, removing all partitions. Afterwards, downloaded a fresh copy of the PC36IMG.zip file for amon_RA from HERE. After that, download a fresh copy of TwoPoint Two or whatever rom you want to use. Place both files on the root of your freshly formatted SD card. Now turn off your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. After a short pause, a few lines of text will flash across the screen. At the top of the screen, you should see "S-OFF". If you see "S-ON", you will have to re-root your device. Anyway, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install. Follow the prompts to install. The installation will take about 10 seconds. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery, and flash the radio. Afterwards, wipe cache & dalvik and then flash the PRI. After that, flash the NV, the WIMAX and HBOOT. Make sure you wipe cache & dalvik in between flashing. You can download the radio stuff from HERE. After that, wipe cache & dalvil ans then go to the flash zip menu and flash your rom. You *should* be good to go afterwards. Be patient during the initial bootup.

Thanks I'll try that when I get home, the phone doesn't even turn on now, not sure I made that clear in my OP. I tried with and without the SD card in and either way it does nothing when power (and vol up or down) is pressed.

No, I was unaware that it doesn't power up. Just in case, however, plug it in to the charger, wait about 15 minutes and then see if it turns on. Also, see if the charging LED lights up.

Hopefully, it'll power on for you. If it does, follow my instructions. Of it doesn't, try everything again. Take out the battery and SD card and then reinsert them. Try to get to the bootloader screen by simultaneously pressing the power and DOWN volume button. Try connecting via USB to your computer and then try to power it up. Do everything you can before getting rid of it. Let is know what happens either way....Good luck

Hope it works out for you but if not check out what you can sell it for on e-bay. A bricked Evo with zero damage and a clean ESN goes for some pretty decent $$$
Did you pull the battery right after flashing a radio? I don't know if I followed you correctly, but if that's what happened, the radio was still flashing (the screen with the phone and arrow in a circle is what you get when you flash a radio update, you're supposed to wait and it'll send you back to recovery). Your phone is most likely bricked forever if you did in fact pull the battery during the radio update.
If not, there still may be hope
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
That was my impression too, that he did the battery pull in the middle of the radio update.

+1 If I followed correctly, he pulled the battery when it was at the screen with the arrow, which would indicate that the phone was flashing something very important (radio). The battery pull during that phase bricked it, without a doubt. Time for a new Evo, for sure.

stuck on green htc logo with while background

This morning I tried to flash Blackout ICS Incredible. I am currently stuck on stuck green logo with white backgroud forever. I am using CWM touch recovery. I can not get to cwm, bootloader or Hboot menu. Only way i can reboot is to take out the battery. Once I put the battery in and let it boot, it goes back to logo screen and gets stuck. Then I took out the battery again and put it back it and press power button while pressing down vol- button, and it goes back to same logo screen and stuck. Again if i take out the battery and put it back it, and if I press the power button while pressing down the vol+ button, the phone vibrates 3 times and goes blank(dark) with battery indicator light blinking(i am not sure if that is battery light).
Any help would be appreciate. I am trying to connect to adb or fastboot, but it does not connect to the phone yet.
Pull the battery, wait five minutes.
Press and hold the volume down button, then press the power button. Don't let go. Wait.... wait, should go into recovery.
Full wipe.
Format data/factory reset.
Wipe dalvik
Format all partitions except sd card.
Restore a back up.
Then read how to get that rom working. Been posted too many times as for me to repeat it. Check the thread somewhere below yours, the title of the thread I believe is the same as the rom, answer is there.

Just saw the HBoot screen but lost it. What I did was, took out the battery, sdcard, SIM. Replace the battery but not the cover of the battery. Then I hit power and volume(plus/minus) button, the HBoot menu came up, but because the batter cover was not placed, the menu was lost when I did not hold the phone tight, meaning batter got loose. Now I am trying to get back to HBoot menu again after replace battery and cover but to no avail. I still have sdcard, SIM out of the phone. I think there is some combination of keys you've to press coming out from cold boot vs. not. will keep on trying unless someone already knows.

That is common flashing that rom. Choose full wipe in aroma installer even if you did it manually. When the flash is done, don't choose to reboot with aroma installer...DO IT MANUALLY from recovery!!...that should solve it...:good:
The same happened to me and found that solution in their thread.

I was able to get to HBoot, choose recovery, came up with CWM touch, did the wipe data/app, delvic, cache, did format /data, /* all the mentioned other than /sdcard. Then went to install from sdcard and choose that Blackout rom. went through the installer but at the end chose not to reboot from the installer as suggested. Then came back to CWM touch menu and did the reboot from there. It stuck on that logo screen again for 5 minutes. Now again took out the battery for few minutes, and want to go back to HBoot, but could not. Do I have to take out SDCARD as well, Do not think so but not sure. And why do we have to take out battery for so long, any idea, taking battery out for a minute isn't enough?
5 minutes just in case.

Should work without battery pull as long as you power off. But when it doesn't, battery pull.
Just volume down, the power, both pressed till it turns on.
Oh, and fastboot unchecked
Edit: if it stll doesnt work, could be a bad download.

After monkeying around with this ROM for a day, it was actually problem with CWM recovery. It looks like this ROM is not compatible with this recovery. I replaced cwm with 4ext recovery and voila I was able to flash this new ROM. Thank you guys so much for helping out. This community is really great to be part of.

I had the same problem after unlocking the bootloader on HTCdev. After a lot of searching, it seems that the HTC process keeps the boot partition locked from recovery but not from fastboot.
I was able to get around this by unzipping the Rom and flashing boot.IMG using fastboot and then flashing the Rom again.
