[Q] Help...I can't wipedatea/factory reset - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone! I am trying to flash a new rom and I am at a loss. I have tried both Amon RA and Clockwork, and neither will fully wipe for some reason. I have been at this for quite some time and have never run into this problem. I am currently running Myn's rls4. I have s-off root and have tried both recoveries with no avail. It tries to wipe then stops al too quickly. Then even after attempting to flash another rom it boots into myn's as if i just flashed it. weird huh? any help would be GREATly appreciated! I hope it ok to post this here! Thank you in advance!

Its 003, ive never had any problems at all before.

Take it you cleared all caches..reg and dalvik? Also might want to re download new ROM in case its a bad file for whatever reason and try it again.

And try wiping everything at least twice. I usually start with the Dalvik and Battery stats and then the data and cache partition wipes.

Yes I have cleared everything, and tried at least two different ROMs

Google "Calkulin's FORMAT ALL" & put the zip on your sd card & flash. It will clear everything. with the exception of dalvik, so you may want amon ra for that

Thanks I'll give it a go. I hope this works.

Additional Info
Ok there is a little more info about the situation. Ive been running Myn's... rls4. I moved all my apps to the partition on my SD. I then decided to run the dalvik cache from there as well. Well, when I moved it (through the terminal) and rebooted the entire system FC'd, everything entirely. Well I wiped everything and went back to a nandroid backup. Ever since then Ive been unable to use Apps2sd, then I came to discover the recovery problem.

Format all did the trick! Thanks so much and Merry Christmas!

[HELP] Problem with flashing Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 5

Ok heres the deal.. Im a noob and have only flashed one rom since root so im real fresh to this.
My set up is as follows: rooted with unrevoked running cyanogen 6.1.2 i flashed amen ra 2.3. I dowloaded the Rom and Radio/Wimax updates and flashed according to the instructions on Myn's OP.
It boots fine but after about 60 seconds of being booted i get roughly 4-6 force close notifications. One for the market, messages, media, android process and the others i cant remember. Any ideas of what went wrong?
I really like the look and feel of this rom so I REALLY REALLY need all the help i can get on this.
Please help..

You did a full wipe prior to flashing right? Maybe try re-wiping everything, then flashing the rom again.
Do you mean a all user data/factory reset? If so then no. I wiped data, cache & dalvik tho. I also tried three different sources for the rom download and flashed all three and got the same results each time.
When you flash a new rom, you should always wipe EVERYTHING: cache, data, factory reset, and dalvik. Try doing it again with wiping all of this first.

Your EVO needs a WIPE!! I prefer to use C's Format All Zip TWICE as well as separately wipe Cache and Dalvik TWICE. After first boot, I like to reboot to recovery and wipe the Dalvik two more times. Reboot, fix permissions, reboot and you should be good to go.
Thanks guys.. I will try that right now and let you know how it turns out..
Can any one tell me where to find the cs format?
And do I need to format my sd card?

Hey man. Attatched is a copy of Calkulin's Format all. You flash it in recovery, and it wipes everything. It ensures a solid wipe. Use your recovery to wipe data/factory reset, cache, and davlik cache two times each. Then flash this zip in recovery. Then reflash the ROM. That should do the trick for you, Myn's runs good and clean!
Edit: And no, you do not need to format your SD card.
I wanna say thanks to all you guys for your help. I have it installed and running great.
If any of you have any recommendations for mods I'm open to suggestions..

[Q] Koni-ELITE_Series_III

Hello I'm new to the forum .
Well my problem is that I installed this new rom, I use my evo as a modem I let it downloading some stuff trough the night and when I woke up all the ui was disorganized stuff was even like out of the screen. And I dint had any signal and the internet was not working had to change to roaming (I assume thats a company problem) but why did my rom went crazy, the ui...
Any help would be great, thanks.
I've never heard of a rom doing that before. My guess would be that everything didn't get properly wiped before flashing the rom. I would try to reflash it and be sure to clear all data, dalvik, cache, settings, etc. Which recovery were you using?
Well I rooted my phone very long ago, I dint really know what I was doing XD just followed instructions.
Just saw... ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1
This is the second time I reflash for the same reason.
I wiped dalvik cache, cache and data wipe. Only time will tell now.
The sad thing I have to re customize my ui and apps againg lol

I would take Jayharper's instruction's, and perform a full wipe (data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache). I would even flash Calkulin's Format all.zip. Then reflash the ROM. It does indeed sound as if something wasn't wiped properly, because I've never seen anything like that happen on any rom I've ever been on, and Koni's ran solid on my device. It's not typical.
Edit: I'm not sure if Calkulin's Format all.zip will flash with the recovery you're on. It may, because that is an older version of Clockwork. If the file doesn't flash, it's because it's not compatible with Clockwork recovery. If that's the case, you'd either need to switch to Amon Ra's recovery, or you could find "king's format all.zip" around the forum's here, which is flashable with Clockwork recovery. I still suggest using one of the two.
Yes I runned Calkulin's, I think i just forgot to do the data/factory wipe I did it now. If it comes up againg I will tell you. Thanksfor now
One last question, is there a way to remove backups? Because I have like 3 of them that are old.

Yup. You can remove them. Just use a file explorer like astro, ES, root explorer, or even hook it up to your comp and locate the folder that says "nandroid" and select which folder to delete from there

[Q] Salvage Mod 1.2.1 won't boot.

What ROM were you on before you flashed Salvage Mod? If it was a sense rom, you need to perform a full wipe (data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, boot, system) prior to flashing the new rom. When you said you cleared 'all cache', do you also mean you cleared dalvik cache as well? What recovery are you currently using? I'm on salvage 1.2.1 right now, and I've never had a problem booting it. When you say it won't boot, what does it do? Does it boot loop, or does it hang at the splash screen (white htc evo 4g screen)? The more info the better. I'd basically suggest doing a full wipe though, and try again.

Can you boot into the bootloader? Power off your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. After a short pause, a few lines of text should scroll across the screen and then you will see a few options. One of the options will be recovery. Anyway, at the top of the screen, you should see either S-ON or S-OFF. Hopefully, it displays S-OFF. Anyway, select recovery from the set of options and then, as k2buckley has instructed, go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING except the SD card itself. When you're done, do not reboot. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you want to flash. Do not flash the gapps zip yet. Reboot after flashing the rom. I want to make sure you're able to boot into the homescreen. If you're successful, reboot into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik and then flash the gapps.zip. afterwards, reboot. When you're all setup, go back I to recovery and make a nandroid backup.

also, make sure you got the full ROM, not just the patch for going from 1.2 to 1.2.1. I did that
I was having similar issues, mine went into a boot loop about twice before getting hung up at the initial setup with FCs. I was coming from CM7 Nightly 41 that was acting weird with FC's, I always double wipe cache/dalvik/factory reset. I thought that I might have had a bad download so I re-downloaded, wiped and flashed. I couldn't get past the initial setup so I went back to Ultimate Droid and have been running that for the last 4 days or so with out any major problems except for the Facebook update dicking things up and one random reboot that I had today... I really want to give Salvagemod a shot though since it's Evo-centric.
still not working for me
hey guys... i been trying to boot into salvage mod for the past 2 days... i get it to install just fine i do get the salvage screen up too...
then when the rom is supposed to be loaded up i get the Android dude with emergency call and a crash u keep pressing ok then it goes away and comes back right away... i just wiped everything again and reflashed it and now i am stuck with salvage screen re looping..
any help would be appreciated
thanks
The OP's problem was solved in a second thread by following the below instructions:
Download a fresh copy of both amon RA v2.3 (PC36IMG.zip) and Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 and place both on the root of your SD card. Make sure there is no other file named PC36IMG.zip. on the root of your card. If there is, put that particular file in a folder. Now shutdown your device. Boot into the bootloader screen. The bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install. Follow the prompts to install. Installation should take less than 10 seconds. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD card. Do not reboot. Go to the flash menu and flash Salvage-Mod. This *should* work.

You're a genius. I was doing a data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik, but not boot and system. When i did those, it worked. Thanks!

Need some slight clarification on a couple of things.

Ok, im not too much of a newbie with flashing roms..but im trying to understand something. Ok right now im on synergy-kingdom rom and whenever I flash a sense rom, my wallpaper and settings seems to carry over from the first rom. Im trying to have a fresh install so to speak. Before every new rom I clear the cache, dalvik cache, data, atleast 3 times. and run a super-wipe zip...but every time it seems like things are unchanged. Basically i want to know how to get the cleanest install without keeping some settings from the previous install?
Well you're doing it right; if you're on clockwork, it may not be wiping correctly for some people, in which you can try switch to amon ra, another recovery, or update to the latest clockwork. Cuz you only need to: backup your apps+data, do a full wipe [factory/data, cache, dalvik cache], flash rom, reboot. Then when restoring apps and data, restore only apps+data, NOT system settings.
ok thanks im using amon ra btw..guess im doing it right. Ok, for example...yesterday I fudged up my synergy install by trying to install a mod for a rosie. So instead of doing a nandroid restore, i just opted to do a fresh install over again after wiping/erasing all the things mentioned above. Upon boot i was expecting to see the wallpaper that came with original rom but instead I got the wallpaper I assigned earlier that day. For some reason I thought it was supposed to load all the original settings of that rom (including wallpapers etc..)and not some settings that I chose manually.
I have done the exact same thing. I've had to repartition SD to remove the data. As I think about it, I started wiping everything except sd card, hasn't done it since then.

So your saying I should repartition the sd to get rid of the left over settings?

Random crashes after restoring to backup.

I had flashed Warm TwoPointThree. Didn't really like it so I restored to my nandroid back up. Now the phone randomly crashes for no apparent reason. It is sitting next to me on my desk and just now it crashed, wasn't even touching it. Secondary to the crashes is that after it happen and I try to report the phone is registering no charge and then immediately shuts down till I put it on a charger, regardless of actual battery charge.
Edit
More info. It has never crashed while on the charger. Don't know if that is relevant.
Did you wipe properly prior to restoring your nandroid? Also, what recovery are you using? If it's not Amon-ra, you need to get it! Make sure when doing a nandroid restore you have the appropriate items checked for restore (Assuming you did this when making the nandroid to begin with). Usually Boot, System, Data, and SD ext if partitioned.
Im using Amon-ra and I have an unpartitioned SD card. What do you mean by wipe? I'm a new to the entire rooting thing.
You need to wipe all data factory reset, boot, system, and dalvik cache in recovery three times each. Then restore your nandroid. You can also use a superwipe script but I feel manually wiping them is best.

Try fix permissions, I think RA has it under other, or if u have Rom manager there is an option to fix permissions

I think I may have found a problem with the backup I was using. For some reason the backup file had 2 copies of every entry.
Under the other tad in RA recovery there was options to fix apk uid mismatches and move recovery.log to SD.
I selected the fix apk uid mismatches. Im hoping that is the fix permissions that the previous poster was talking about. If not then can I get some direction in doing it properly?

Yes that's it.
Well the crashes have started again. They seem to start slow, one crash then like 3 days later another and then just increase in frequency, today it crashed 5 times before noon. I'm at the point that I think perhaps I need to wipe and not attempt to do a restore. My concern is will I lose my root if I do that?
Will I lose root if I do wipe with out restoring afterward?

If you wipe without restoring, you won't have a ROM on your device. You'll have to flash one, and as long as it's a custom or rooted stock ROM, you'll be fine.
Well I did a factory reset tonight so we'll see how that goes. Thanks to those people who contributed.
Well I did the factory reset and this morning it crashed again. I'm at a loss. All this started after I installed the Warm 2.3 ROM and then restored back to a backup to get the stock ROM back. Any thoughts on what to try now?
Any further help that anyone can offer on this. I'm at the end of what I can think of to do

Just stop restoring and flash a ROM from scratch. Do a full wipe (everything except SD card), and then flash the ROM (custom or stock) or your choice. It seems that the restore is at the root of your problem, so it may be time to give up on that.

Try wiping in recovery by flashing Edify_Format_ALL (found on xda). I manually wipe Dalvik, habit... Flash rom from scratch. I use Titanium Backup to back up apps and data just for these situations. Some caches are moved to SD card, maybe delete these folders and let system rebuild them. (ie android_secure).
Hope you get it sorted out.
