[Q] HTC Desire HD Alternitives? (Locations GPS) - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm wondering if there are any other phones that function like the Desire HD in the sense that I can use it as a GPS without a data signal. Either with other phones that have "Locations" or other phone that have apps similar to it.
Thanks!

Bump, still looking for an answer

My old Nokia 5800 and N900 could do that. I believe almost any GPS-enabled phone can use GPS without using a data connection as long as you have the maps stored on the phone or memory card.

Bull ****!
Our device has the same features like iphone and it also works within gps.
For locating GM use GPS or GSM. For data tranfer (maps, pictures etc.) it uses any available internet connection - gprs,3g or wi-fi.
Maybe your friend did you a joke with his performance.
He propably loaded few maps on device, stored in app's cash and he showed you just as offline.
If he could have all maps from GM with satelite view on device he ought to have about petabytes storage memory disk or card.

You have to know that Iphone users have no any good alternative gps application. For that reason team-hackers stay on their heads to find any goodies for existing stuff. And also that feature you asked before is one of these goodies. It's not implemented by Jobs. They (IP users) have to jailbreak their toys before any clever operation like exploring system files or folders.
However I don't know how to implement few maps on GM app in HD version to work offline but I suggest try any better GPS applications than GM, whichever there are many in the WM world.

A-GPS?

Hi,
is a-gps really working for you? Very inaccurate. Is it working only with wi-fi on? Is there any ROMs available that have this fixed?
Mine is working like charm... I do have to let it do its magic for 5 seconds though but that is logical
How accurate is it when you are inside of a building? With Google Maps for example...
Pretty good if I'm close to a window!
Otherwise how could it check for satellites?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
No need to be close window...so I assume that it doesn't work for you either.
Here's my friends findings:
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/jorimak/where_demo.htm
I assume that's problem of the network in finland. For me it's like this, in-car I get circle smaller then the car, so it actually points on my body. With wi-fi a-gps it does... the same.
At home with wi-fi only I get circle as big as my home or the village I am in. (smaller then the Nokia N95 circle on your friend's pic). With a-gps I get basically my room.
Or may it be the GPS chip in the phone has less satellites encoded in finland then CZE
GPS receivers rely on line of sight to get a lock on the satellites. So if its cloudy or you're in a building, the chances of getting an accurate lock are less and will take a lot longer. A-gps (assisted-gps) uses the wireless networks (wifi and mobile network) around it to help get a fix faster but with no real GPS lock it won't be accurate which is why you get the GPS circle to he the size of your village or room because that is the most accurate position that the GPS has managed to get via triangulation without a proper GPS lock.

So why there's a huge difference between HTC and Nokia? Same network, same location, just different phone.
Page has been updated with static pictures: http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/jorimak/where_demo.htm
oh I forgot, have you tried google earth? It does a lot better A-GPS for me
HTC support replied: "Our analysis shows that in certain situations, your phone will not be able to locate exactly the location from your friends. We will consider this function in future HTC phones".
So, the feature is just not there. Wonder how to use for example Footprints inside big mall? Or is this still software related problem and we should ask Goole to fix it...I will ask for HTC if they can tell.
Haven't tried GEarth yet.
try it, it's much more better.
Tried,makes no diffence here

well next time you'll be on vacation somewhere in asia HTC will own nokia, so ;-)
Are there any agps settings on the Desire? On my N96 and N97 I can setup AGPS-Servers. Getting a gps fix on Nokia usually takes me around max. 5 seconds. Using my Desire approx. 5 minutes. Can't believe the difference is that much.
Ok, Symbian is crap compared to Android, but really, gps rules on Symbian...
yeah there must be some settings but I dunno where...
I have owned the first N95 since 2006 and the 8GB I still own. The A-GPS is far superior on the Desire IME. I use it daily during driving, walking, running, with nru and it is just superior on multiple domains. It is the first mobile GPS that has been practically usable for me. However, I don't use Latitude and I think your problem is more with how the A-GPS functions with this app than the A-GPS itself.
I've just tried it indoors where I'm getting 1 bar network reception, HSPDA running, WiFi disabled and from enabling the GPS, it took 17 seconds on GMaps to get a fix on me ~8m outside from where I'm actually sitting. Pretty darn accurate, but obviously antipode to what you're experiencing.

Htc support told that the feature is missing from Android OS,so we should ask Google to add it.
I think there is something like SYSTEM/ETC/GPS.CFG where you can define servers, but that requires rooting I guess.
Not that big issue for me,but my friend is more upset.
Otherwise,gps is great,fast fix etc.

how to use A-GPS on Laptop
Hi all,
In HTC desire built in A-GPS to know your position on maps. I have a situation if I want to use A-GPS on mobile to become positioning system like GPS on my laptop ???? help me, how to use
Ok, so if you go to your settings and go to locations there should be a setting that says use wireless networks (wifi or network access) pretty much assisted GPS right there. Don't get semantic on me here.
In my experience I've had no issues and get a very fast lock, better than my gf's Nokia N97 which can take upto and sometimes over 10 minutes to get a lock and that is with WiFi and network assistance

[Q] Will theG2 A-GPS function without access to cell or wifi?

I'm shopping for a phone but have a specifice requirement: Does the GPS in the G2 work without having access to cell or wifi ephemeris download ie can the GPS as fitted to this phone download ephemeris data from the GPS constellation and then be used as a GPS? I realise, of course, that maps would have to be stored locally, as well has having navigation software installed.
I've searched but have been unable to find an answer around the web. Lot's of comments similar to "Why would you want to?" or "...but Google maps/VZ navigitor won't work." but that's not the point. I hope to be able to use the phone as a stand alone GPS device when I'm out of wifi/cell coverage.
I compared setup options in the G2 to those in the Droid 2 Global (my other phone candidate due to its international bands). The D2G has a specific option to disable AGPS while leaving the GPS active - something I've not found in the G2, hence my question. The D2G specs. also refer to S-GPS as well as A-GPS. I presume that the 'S' is for 'Standalone'?
Ideally I'd like a hybrid of the two phones. Something like the D2G bands with the keyboard & thumbpad of the G2. Until manufacturers & telcos stop screwing around with crippled hardware I'll just have to make do.

Yes, I use a program called Aura, it stores the maps on my sdcard, I can use them with my data off and no cell reception, works fine. The gps unit in the phone is stand alone from the cell/data system.

Well, that was a fast reply! Thank you.
Is there a work around of any sort required? For example, will the GPS lock on even in aeroplane mode or must it lock on before selecting that mode?

[Q] Mobile internet breaking off during tethering

Hi,
I have a really annoying problem with the Desire and hope that somebody is out there who has solved this problem already and is willing to share the solution.
I have a Desire Bravo which I used to provide internet to my desktop PC via USB tethering. But since a month or so, the phone's mobile internet (o2 Germany) goes into some sort of sleep mode when I am not actively using it on the PHONE or have constant data stream to the PC. For instance, while reading the web on the PC, I will have to grab the phone occasionally and call a web site there so that I can access the internet again on the PC. As soon as I called a web site, a download or the like on the PC works again. It must be some sort of sleep mode but I have no idea which setting it could be. I am not completely clear when this happens as sometimes it keeps awake for a good time but sometimes it interrupts very quickly.
I already have flashed a new radio 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 and also the latest stable release of LeeDroid 3.0.8.2 as I thought it might be the OS. But not improvement.
It is also not the SIM / carrier as it works without this problem if I use the same SIM in an internet USB stick.
Is there some sort of user data I could try to delete?
Or could the Windows drivers (on win 7 64 bit) be the problem?
Or any other suggestions?
I have searched the web for days and did find entries but the problem is always slightly different...
Thanks a mil for any insights!
Cheers,
frotty
Maybe an easier question first: do you guys get a stable connection over a prolonged period of time when using the Desire as a mobile internet modem via tethering?
The HDSPA signal is strong and the phone is not moving.
(Now, I tried newer HTC sync drivers (uninstall, new install) - no improvement.
I tried a wipe / factory reset and started without microSD, thus no user data - no improvement.
I tried it on a different Win 7 PC - no difference.
So far I only tried HTC stock ROM-based ROMs. Would it be worthwhile to try one of the open source ROMs?
Or might it be really a carrier issue? It just started to do this breaking off a month ago... but then again, with a USB internet stick the SIM gives a rather stable connection.)

Android virgin questions :P

Hi there, i got desire HD with Android Revolution HD 7.0(2.3.5 (Gingerbread) + Sense UI 3.5 )
and i got some questions.
1. I have installed CurrentWidget in order to check on my battery and i set the log correctly but the application is not making any log ? Do i need to keep it running or its running by it self?
2.I got Samsung ue55d8000 TV and i connected it to my wireless AP(phone also connected to it) and Samsung Remote cant seem to find it?
ps. Connection works on TV and on phone.
ok i fixed the samsung problem, it was firmware upgrading to new got it working.
anyone for this current wig. ?
If you have any task killers exclude Cur. Widg. from it, and be sure to actually place the widget on the home screen.
Goto Curr.Wid from Settings-> apps. Clear the data and force close. then restart the application. probably this might work.
canabi 1859
ok i kinda fixed it dont know how
one some more questions coming
3. ok after cleaning my antenna contacts i get better gps reception i can fix on 7-9 sats. in like less then 30seconds, but when i keep start walking(was in park trees only 500m around me clear no buildnings) i start losing sats one by one.
i installed igo my way 8.4.3.179971 put maps on it and everything else i started it and i got fix on my location but when i started walking (same in park) it says gps lost and gps off.
So my question is this rom related problem or hardware or even application?
4. How can i force phone to install applications on Sd card?
