I want to start off by saying thank you all for your help.
I have been doing some reading over the last month or so since I received my 2.2 update and have since rooted, removed bloat and am now trying to underclock to save battery. That being said... I have read about what others are recommending for a kernel for the Dinc and have a good idea of what i want.
My questions is How do I go about getting one? I have been doing some searches but all the info I am getting is help as to which one to get not how to get it. Once I get a kernel going I can then buy SetCPU and overclock/underclock right?
Sorry for the noob questions. Thank you all in advance for your help.
yes, you are correct. there are plenty of kernels for the incredible, but if you want to underclock and save battery, i recommend the bfs KingxKernel #5, best kernel ive tried yet
link
How do I get that kernel?
im guessing u are rooted and have installed clockwork recovery correct?
if so, you can just flash the kernel through there as if it were a rom, or if ur feelin kinda lazy, install it through rom manager

Just click on the link above to kingxkernel's thread, then there's a link to download each kernel to your sd card. Flash thru recovery.

Also I've heard that being an xda member you can get a free copy of set cpu but I don't know how also if you don't mind buying I would still buy just to support the developer

Sorry i was out of town for the weekend and just got back. yes i am rooted.
Alright so i did all of what you recommended... Now when i try to flash the kernel in reboot is says there is no file to be found. I can find the folder but when i go into the folder to flash the .zip it does not register. There are three folders in the kernel that i saved to my SD card.
I dont understand. What am i doing wrong?
Thank you for you responses. As always i really appreciate the help!

You aren't extracting the zip file are you? You just need to put it on the root of the sd card in the zip format, boot into recovery, select zip file, select the file, and it should install from there.
Where can I get a kernel that is compatible with CM6? I'd like to undervolt to try and save myelf some battery life.

For CM6 and other AOSP roms, you can use kingxklick's AOSP kernels or koush's kernels.
http://kingxklick.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=224&p=2155#p2155
Koush's kernels-
http://www.clockworkmod.com/download/htc/inc/
test1, test2- are the kernels
I'd recommend the Adrynalyne Custom Kernel (v2). I've tried Kings kernels and they caused my phone to feel sluggish and didn't seem to help my battery life at all. Adrynalyne's kernel is not sluggish and definitely improved my battery life. You can download it with Rom manager under the Virtuous category.

Can i use the Adrynalyne Kernal with a stcok type ROM? It Have a ROM but it is basically stock. (I only flashed to be Deodexed)
would love to try this Kernal
Yes. Adrynalyne Custom Kernel (v2) is for sense, so long as you use it on a sense ROM, which covers "stock type ROMs."
Hi,
I have a HTC Desire, which I have rooted and am running the stock rom (froyo). I downloaded SetCPU in order to overclock it and realised that things are not as simple as I thought. I've read that in order to overclock a device I have to change the kernel to one that supports overclocking. Can any one help me with this? What kernel shall I install, how do I do it? Are there any good guides I can use?
Cheers
Kernels are easy to install, all you do is flash the .zip from recovery, look in the android development section there are a couple, also some custom roms like leedroid come with oc kernels
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
download Vork kernel form the below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801915&highlight=vork
and flash it form the recovery mode....thatz it
Also, Make sure you use the correct kernel depending if you have a Sense/Senseless ROM. Only real Issue of note, rest should be painless really
KYI
1. I'm using Sense, is vork ok for that?
2. Am I correct in understanding that all I have to do is download it to the root folder of my SD card and just enter clockworkMod Recovery --> install zip from sd card?
3. Also does it make a difference which one I install? Are there any others that you'd recommend?
4. Are there any adverse effects from doing all this?
Sorry for having to spoon-feed me everything but im kind of new to this :-/
If you are rooted, recommend the LeeDroid custom rom. It's a very stable sense rom, that comes with the kernel for overclocking.
Careful when adjusting overclocking though. Do it in small steps. Your phone will become unstable when pushed too far. Mine is stable at 1190mhz. The kernel allows up to 1300mhz though!

I've tried to install the kernel, but no luck...
This is what i did...
I downloaded vorkKernelSense_r1-SVS-CFS-BFQ.zip to my sd card.
I switched off the phone and got in to the boot menu --> recovery --> install zip from sd card --> choose zip from sd card.... and click on the file...
this is what i get...
Installing: SDCARD:vorkKernelSense_r1-SVS-CFS-BFQ.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E: Can't open /sdcard/vorkKernelSense_r1-SVS-CFS-BFQ.zip (bad)
Installation aborted.
I suspect im doing something wrong, can anybody help?
EDIT: ok it turns out the file was corrupted (/me is an ubernoob), vork underclocked the cpu so im trying out an other kernel, thanks for all your help guys!
EDIT2: I've just installed HAVS 2.6.32 (1113Mhz). The difference in speed is amazing, I basically wanted to overclock because Asphalt 5 HD (game) was very choppy on certain levels and now it playing like a PSP! thanks again to all who helped me!
hey, just a quick question from a n00b overclocker too
how can you tell if or not the phone is stable?, i am using the latest LeeDroid Rom, which has an overclocking function, but i a little hesitant in using it, as i dont wanna push the phone too far and end up having it go out on me
so, how can you tell if or the phone is stable?, i think this rom lets you do upto 1113mhz
thanks guys
If it's unstable it'll start doing re-boots.

Hey guys, I just rooted my phone a few hours ago from the tutorial here on this site for my android 2.3.3 hboot 2.16....well i finally got to root it and got really excited. THe main 2 reasons i rooted were for wifi tethering and terrible battery life. Bought an extended battery before but didnt help much.
Anyway i think i flashed it lol with superuser? ( i backed up files with rom manager and myrombackup) I just downloaded set cpu with the following settings
enabled check notifications check
screen off priority 100 245 max 245 min performance
charging full priority 50 998 max 245 min ondemand
battery<75 priority 50 806 max 245 min ondemand
So my question is, are these good settings? how much better do you think my battery life will be with these settings?
oh and do roms and kernels come in like the same zip file? where i flash them together? and which do you guys think is best for battery life, but similar to the evo stock rom? i dont wanna change my phone too much, i like it, just didnt like the battery life...sorry if this question is redundant, but most of the threads i found were really old so i didnt wanna put in an old rom or kernel if i dont have to.... THANK u guys so much before hand.
If you want to stay stock there are a few roms in the development forum that are stock with bloat removed and minimal mods. You might check some of those out.
One example is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249615
The next step would be a ROM that is ported to the Evo but with a stock look. I am running MikG which I think is one of the best.
A ROM will always come with a kernel that will be flashed with it. You can always flash a different kernel over it later. Freedom is a good kernel (see my sig for a link).

If your looking for a stock rooted ROM with good battery life you might want to try a froyo ROM with an sbc kernel you will get almost 2 times more out of your battery and its the same old sense 1.0 so you won't even notice a difference.

Battery is OK like any gb ROM and bloat is what we call any apps that come from our carrier that you don't want or need on the ROM like stocks ,nova , sprint TV etc..
Edit: you can remove apps "bloat" with any app that will let you like titanium backup I use antek app its free on the market.

Yeah the evo got stuck with sense 1.0 even with the gb update .
If what ever ROM you flash works for you you can keep it forever if you like you will need to try out a few ROMs they all work different on each evo there are a few different types if evos .
What might work good for me might not for you.

What recovery are you using ?
I recommend amon ra 2.3 if your not already .
If you already backed up your ROM from recovery "nandroid backup" then you don't need to do it again its just in case something goes wrong so you can go back to it.
Yes download the ROM from here and the kernel then wipe everything except your sd card and battery stats "you can wipe your battery stats if your battery is at a 100%" then flash the ROM and then the kernel.
If you get any fc's after first boot fix permissions if that doesn't work go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot that will fix most problems.
Hope that helps you out.

wow, you're super helpful
i actually used the superuser backup- from this thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
what's the difference between that and amon ra 2.3?
also i did a backup from the recovery and also from rommanager.
and finally, lets say i get the rom you told me about, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 - (warm twopoint) it says on that thread,
As this ROM now uses the latest official HTC Kernel (#15) you MUST update your Radio/Wimax. I recommend Calkulin's combo update which is available here or via direct download here.
Installation Instructions:
Download Rom and Radio/Wimax updates and place in the root of SDCard.[/B]
umm does the kernel come in the same file as the rom that i download? and where do I get the radio/wimax updates and what do I do with them? do i flash them too and when?
(should I get a separate kernel for better battery life? some people commented that the battery life wasn't great with this rom, so should i use a different kernel?)

Superuser is an app the let you allow root to apps that need it.
You want to make a backup from recovery its called a nandroid backup I think you have clock work mod recovery you might want to switch to amon ra 2.3 you can get the link from my sig.
When you make a backup make sure to backup your wimax keys I think cwm does it on its own in ra2.3 you can pick and choose what you want to backup.
I'm not sure what radios your on but you should be good if you had 2.3 on your phone when you rooted it.
The ROM comes with a kernel but its the stock kernel give me a minute and I'll post a link to the ones that work with it.

For the recovery zip make sure its on the root of your sd not in any folder then boot to your bootloader not recovery you can download an app called quick boot to do that or just turn your phone off then hold down volume and power when it comes to the bootloader it will automatically scan for the update just hit volume up to except it then you can reboot the phone or go to recovery.

No you don't have to flash it then I just forgot about rm and flashing it that way I don't use rm anymore only to fix permission.
Now when you go to recovery to make a backup go under backup/restore/ nand backup and select what you want to backup leave the ones that are checked then check android secure ,sdext if your sd is partitioned , and wimax I believe thats all I backup .
You don't need to backup recovery or cache .
You should also make a backup of just your wimax keys that way if you lose them in a flash you can restore just that and not have to restore a whole backup.

Thank you so much! I did it both ways anyway lol, I'm currently doing a nandroid backup for everything, then doing it juts for wimax. THen ill copy them to my computer and flash drive just incase.
Ok, so i think i decided, I'm gonna get the [ROM] Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 5 - 01/07/2011] - and for the kernel im gonna flash, 4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-sbc (More Aggressive HAVS) (can u make sure that's the one you have? and does it have at least 12 hours of moderate use? i text a lot, thats about it..)
ok now can you tell me if I have the steps right please?
- I'm going to download the rom Download Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 5 (Mirror 1) and paste it onto the root of my sd card.
- Then I'm going to download the kernel 4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-sbc (More Aggressive HAVS)- and paste it to the root of my sd card.
- Then, I use quick boot to go into recovery, then I wipe what I have to wipe/factory reset, then I flash the rom....
- THen I dont have to wipe again, and i just flash the kernel...THen, I can use myrombackup to get all my apps and the information in the apps back...
Should i use set cpu with this rom and kernel? and is thiss correct? lol- I'm really excited btw thank u sooo much---and oh the kernel i have on my phone right now is kernel version- 2.6.35.10...

Use mybackup root to backup apps and data then use it to restore them.
Yes it sounds like you got it wipe everything except your sd card, battery stats and screen rotation I'll post a like to a super wipe I use that you can flash to make sure you wipe everything as well.
Then flash the ROM then the kernel then reboot.
If you get any force closes go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then under other run fix uid package mismatch or what ever its called that will fix permissions from recovery.
http://www.4shared.com/file/p6mi6ogM/VR_SUPERWIPE.html
Flash this before you flash the ROM it will wipe everything for you do the wipes on your own as well.
After your all done you should download the app battery calibration and calibrate your battery to get more battery life it wipes you battery stats you can do it from recovery but you should just use the app it will tell you what to do.

Freedom kernel worked very will for me on synergy when I was using it. Just search for it here on xda, download (i downloaded the aggressive universal which is undervolted -175mv.) The synergy nightly kernel did not work for me, caused wifi to error when turning on. Anyway download, reboot into recovery> wipe cache and dalvik(but not data)>flash zip from sd> download folder (where all your downloads go) and just flash it. Reboot and enjoy. Surprisingly, synergy gets pretty good battery life with this undervolted kernel since not only is this a sense rom obviously, it is a sense 2.1+ 3.0. Good luck

Download the kernel (I use Aggressive, depends on how low voltage the phone can handle). Put on the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery. Wiipe cache and dalvik twice. Navigate to "Mounts" and mount data. Navigate to "Flash Zips" and find the kernel. Select with power button. Reboot.
Download SetCPU or No Frills CPU (If you haven't purchased SetCPU then dowload No Frills, it is free and has a simple interface).
Do not use profiles. I suggest Interactive X. My min-max CPU is 245 - 820. Interactive X drops the CPU down to 245 mHZ when screen is off and manages the CPU well when the screen is on

You don't have to mount data on Synergy...thats only for the sense 3.5 roms
I used no frills cpu control. Its free in the market and worked well for me. Too bad it wasnt there when I bought setcpu. At least it was only $1. Aggressive freedom is the way to go

Heard that some people had to do it for Xplod, at least in its earlier stages. I do it every time now I flash a kernel, just to prevent any possible issues

I'm sorry if this offends you (ghettovirtuoso), but seriously? If you listened to the video at all when you registered, you would know how to look for these answers on your own. Especially "Should I use an overclock app", "if i'm trying to overclock"? What? First, if you didn't already know this, you shouldn't be doing this! You should do A LOT MORE research before you even ask a single question! Second, be careful not to brick your phone! That's the rough it sounds like your going! It is really unfortunate how many people just want things handed to them without putting anything in themselves! DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH FIRST, A LOT OF RESEARCH! YOU CAN FIND THE ANSWER TO 99.9999% of your questions here already! also if you don't find your answer, use different search terms, or learn correct definitions for word you are using.
Finally lets get to some real development!
I had quick question as to how I should apply Gideon's script. Am I right in saying that all I have to do is uninstall any CPU controlling apps that I have and then just boot to recovery and install from sd card?
Also, does this override any undervolting settings my custom kernel might already have baked in? Or is it not safe to try if the kernel already uses undervolting settings on it's own?
1) uninstall your cpu controlling apps
2) install the correct kernel (ie. faux .07)
3) install gideon's script
make sure to do the standard wipe cache/dalvik/fix permission etc
good luck
and yes it overrides any uv/oc settings within ur kernel

Does it only work with faux's kernels? Or can any kernel that supports voltage change work with it? (i.e. darkside)
