Is 993mb a norma size for a backup? Filled up my 8gb card like that considering 6 gigs is music.
My g1 had backups the size of the actual ROM

default sync for gmail is 4 days for the top level folders... so i wouldnt touch that... (a search of your gmail will do just fine if you need something not synced)
but Virtuous (sense rom) is huge compared to CM - like almost four times bigger so you will naturally have larger backups with sense...

Hi,
i think i messed something up while doing a nandroid backup (clicked @ backup google filesystem or something like this and then i got a not enough cache error).
I downloaded the app quick system info and i have only 2mb free system cache (of 40 mb total). So i am not able to download apps from the market which are bigger than 2mb
Any ideas?
thanks
edit: ok sorry, silly question -> recovery -> wipe cache 11mb free now..
After tons of googling ive finally been able to customize the size of my data partition.
Im sharing it with you all...
Install Instuctions
It really is quite simple
1.download FR-recovery-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip and FR-boot-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip
2.create mtdpartmap.txt and put on /sdcard/ see configuration *
3.reboot to recovery
4.nandbackup
5.wipe cache + data
6.flash FR-recovery-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip(follow onscreen instructions)
7.reboot to recovery
8.Either : -
Nandrestore
or
Flash ROM + extras
9.flash FR-boot-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip
10.reboot
*For cyanogenmod- write "mtd 135 15"
this will give ur system 135mb, cache 15 mb and rest for data!!!!(u can change the values but be sure u give enough to system otherwise ull face problems while flashing)
NOTE-each time u flash a rom u MUST flash FR-boot-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip.
NOTE-if u reduce cache size by a large amount, market and other apps depending on cache will fc.
credits-Firerat for the files and instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
as sense roms are heavy...this wouldnt be of much help.
PS-as always im not responsible if u brick ur device.
PRESS THANKS IF IT HELPED!
Can someone test this please? To OP: does it work?
Want to do it, but don't want a bricked phone.
I just need a 100 mb more for data, so i dont need the build in "move to sd" option from android.

Chicken. As I wrote in the other thread....it works.
Be careful not to undersize your Cache partition though or Market and other apps that rely on it for temp storage will force close.
The guy that said he uses a 10 MB cache partition is on better drugs than I can afford...
dude,
i followed all the mentioned steps by letter but unfortunately i still have the stock part intact
1-copied the files to Sd
2-creating the text file mtd 150 25
3-flashed the recovery attached
4-flashed the rom (caynogenmod 7)
5- flashed the boot file
still have the original partitions :S i am missing smthing ?

Yes.
First this is a confusing and partially explained tutorial...No offense. Here it is for CM7.x with updated script files and an mtdpartmap.txt for CM7.x
1/ Create the txt file and do not hit enter. Make sure there is no carriage return taking you to a second line.
2/Now save it as "mtdpartmap.txt" (For CM7x you can use 145 20 with no worries).
3/ Copy the recovery file, the boot file and the mtdpartmap.txt files to the root of your SD card
4/Copy Alquez's latest nightyly CM7 zip to the root of your SD card along with the latest gapps zip
5/Reboot to recovery
6/ Erase user data
7/ Under Mounts, format system
8/ Install zip from SD card and run the Recovery zip
9/ Go back to mounts and format data, cache and system partitions
10/ Go to advanced menu and reboot to recovery
11/ If you are restoring a NANDROID backup do so now using backup/restore
12/ If you are installing CM7.x Install zip from SD and flash the CM7 zip and the gapps zip
13/ Install zip from SD card and now flash the boot zip.
14/ Return to recovery main menu and reboot device
15/ Enjoy your roomy CM7.x install!
Don't listen to 135 for CM7! It's not close to enough.
Will it work with Wildfire S with unlocked bootloader (via HTC webpage)? Or is it only for S-OFF phones?

@ d33spx the tutorial is perfect and complete.the steps u posted are unnecessary.
@everyone with s on but bl unlocked: it won't work.
@everyone with soff and cyanogen mod: 135 15 is more than enough...
For sense roms which are debloated 250 20 is good...

You need to flash flash "FR-boot-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip" immediately after flashing a new ROM or Restoring any nandroid backup before restarting your device. This will keep your partitions.
Cheers!!
What mtdpartmap would you recommend for modpunks CM9?
CWM offers the volume rocker/sleep wake UI for the Nitro for free, available through ROM Manager. You can upgrade through ROM Manager for $1.99 to the touch interface (I had the touch interface in 5.8.x.x recovery).
But Clockworkmod offers the Touch Recovery .IMG for free here: http://goo.gl/iC5rz AS long as you're willing to download and do a couple lines of code, it is FREE.
Following the instructions here (http://goo.gl/X0Xwh) I got CWM Touch Recovery 6.0.1.5 working on my rooted AT&T Nitro HD (P930).
Code:
Backup your existing recovery:
1) [COLOR="Magenta"]cat /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 > /sdcard/recovery-backup.img[/COLOR]
Flash the new recovery by:
1) Download the recovery .img and rename it "recovery.img"
2) Copy the recovery.img to your /sdcard
3) Via terminal emulator or adb shell execute:
[COLOR="Magenta"]
su
cd /sdcard
cat recovery.img > /dev/block/mmcblk0p13[/COLOR]
All Done!
Now to Boot into recovery , press the vol down+pwr button , when it asks you to factory reset , tap twice the pwr button to confirm (dont worry it wont format your device)
Alright, so I know drumist brought this up in another thread, but I think it'd be better to continue the discussion here. 6.0.1.5 appears to have deficiencies in terms of backups. drumist said they actually completed for him after a long wait, but they weren't even finishing for me. He also stated that he was left with a large "blobs" folder about 400mb which I observed as well. So I did some research into things. I found that I was able to get a successful backup by rebooting to CWM, changing the backup type from dup to tar, and then initiating the backup. Afterward there was no residual blobs folder and it still took a damn long time, but I think that's probably because of the amount of data I have. It's been a long time since I've done a backup and I remember it taking quite a while before as well. If anybody discovers anything else interesting, feel free to post it here
I haven't worked up the courage to wipe my phone and restore the backup to see if that operation works properly.
Thanks for the note. I ran a backup and it seemed SLOW, but did complete. Looking in Astro File Manager the folder it produced under CWM Backups was very small 27 MB, compared to my last backup of 1.37 GB.
I hope to have time tomorrow morning and I will run a comparison. I'll run a backup using 6.0 Touch, 6.0 Recovery, and 5.8 Touch. I'll look at Time it takes, Battery it consumes, and File size of the Backup Folder.

Forgive my ignorance. Is the BLOBS folder new to the 6.0 backups? Or was it around in 5.8?

It's new in 6.0.
If my understanding is correct, the blobs folder is a deliberate way to reduce the size of multiple backups on the SD card. It's actually a good idea IMO, and the problem isn't that it uses the blobs. The problem is that the backup just takes forever and, in Malnilion's case, didn't work at all.
Personally I'd just recommend people who already have 5.8.2.0 installed to just leave it for the time being.

I agree. I upgraded to 6.0 Touch yesterday and performed a backup, which created a Backup folder and the Blobs folder. Deleting the backup in CWM does not delete the Blobs folder, so if you downgrade from 6.0 to 5.8 you can manually delete the Blobs folder to free up space.
To compare, in order, I cleaned cache, fixed permissions, flashed new recovery, cleaned cache, fixed permissions, booted to recovery and created a new backup, which I deleted after measuring (then I repeated this procedure for the next recovery). And here are my results:
5.8.2.0 Touch Recovery
Backup Folder Size - 1.43GB
Blobs Folder Size - N/A (0MB)
Battery Usage - 6%
Time Elapsed - 11 minutes
6.0.1.5 Touch Recovery
Backup Folder Size - 30MB
Blobs Folder Size - 1.33GB
Battery Usage - 19%
Time Elapsed - 42 minutes
6.0.1.5 Recovery
Backup Folder Size - 30MB
Blobs Folder Size - 1.32GB
Battery Usage - 19%
Time Elapsed - 38 minutes
The folder size totals in 6.0 are smaller than in 5.8, 1.36GB compared to 1.43GB. I did not do multiple back ups, so I don't know how the filesize would grow, but it sounds like two backups would be 2x the size, but with 6.0 it would be significantly smaller, depending how much of the system/data changed. For me the smaller filesize does not make it worth waiting 30 extra minutes. I'll stay with 5.8.2.0 as well.
I just want to throw this out there to everyone and reiterate that it appears 6.x CWM introduced a new backup method called dup whereas previously tar was the only option. dup is set to be default and appears to be what is buggy for our devices, but if you manually reboot to CWM there's a setting to change your backup type back to tar. I just ran a backup initiated through Rom Manager and it did a tar backup that completed with no issues, so it appears that once you change the setting to tar, it's saved for future backups. You don't end up with a blobs folder either.
Edit, read this post from our man koush for more info.
Do not install CWM 6.0.1.5 or 6.0.1.4!!! It can't mount and format partitions so it can't install zip's - bootloop.
I bricked phone with 6.0.1.5 and 6.0.1.4 (cant mount partotions), but from 10F touch version installed fine. Also adb sideload does not work for me.

What is the name of your .IMG? Is it "bc64-recovery.img" at the root of your sdcard? Remember to save the .IMG to the SDcard root, and rename it. I recommend "recovery.img" but anything is fine as long as your terminal command matches.

Update: The first backups where long ~40 minutes. Subsequent backups have been about half that at ~20 minutes. Still longer than 5.8xxx, at 11 minutes. But the total filesize is smaller if you keep multiple backups.
Hey, so I'm still a noob at everything but heres what I know...
I have an 16GB AT&T galaxy s3. I rooted it and installed Cyanogenmod 10 stable build (not sure if I should have posted in a Cyanogenmod forum...), anyways, I have cleared out all the bloat ware and made sure all my cache is kept cleared, but I still seem to have only half the internal storage space...
I have included a screenshot to show what my phone says about its storage.
Is there any app or any way to scan the internal storage to see whats (possibly?) left over from uninstalls or deletions?
Am i wrong to believe that the internal SD card of the galaxy is similar to standard harddrives where you delete files but they aren't ACTUALLY removed and still take up space? If so, is there a way to fully wipe the deleted items?
When I initially started with Cyanogenmod 10, I had the October nightly release (one of the last ones) and I had used Titanium Root to backup stuff (not sure where it all actually went, could it be on the phone still?). But I recently updated to the stable mod and tried to wipe everything off the phone to have a clean flash of the new ROM. So I've begun wondering if the backup files are still on the phone and where I could find them.
Or, lastly, I was thinking that maybe, just maybe, Cyanogenmod 10 takes up a lot of space, even though the file size is around 150MB...
Any ideas anyone? HELP!!!
Thanks!
Your operating system (CM10) takes up more than the 150MB download would suggest.
If you try "df" from shell, you'll see how your 16GB is partitioned. Here's what I got when I did it.
Filesystem Size Used Free Blksize
/dev 814M 52K 814M 4096
/mnt/asec 814M 0K 814M 4096
/mnt/obb 814M 0K 814M 4096

/persist 7M 4M 3M 4096
/firmware 63M 42M 21M 16384
/storage/sdcard0 12G 8G 3G 4096
I don't think there is more space that you can easily reclaim from the operating system. If you want more space, get a SD card.

What confuses me then, is that (I believe) TouchWiz is a larger ROM and comes with A LOT of bloatware, so how is it that I had more internal storage space back on the stock ROM?
You can download apps in the store that show you the space each folder takes up. Use one of them. They are more useful than any terminal commands because you can easily see the sub-folders in big folders which shows you where space is being wasted.
For example, in my apps folder, there was a large amount of Economist magazines downloaded which were taking up tons of space.

Thank you! That is exactly what I was hoping to come across. I also just tried SDMaid, seems to be helping
I figured out what my problem was...
I used SDMaid to look at my "biggest" files and found that I still had about 6 of the Cyanogenmod nightlies zips still on my phone.
But now i have one further question, I have clockwork mod and I see a BUNCH of backups and files dealing with clockwork mod, each are around 25MB, I see 4 that are blobs, and 3 backups. How can I tell which ones are outdated? Or do I need to keep them all?
EDIT: I found even more blobs and backups but they are around 10MB.. Anyone know what to do?
And I also have 2 camera apps.... 120MB-VID_20121115_212426.mp4 /storage/sdcard/DCIM/camera/ and 74.33MB- VID_20121115_212425.mp4 /storage/sdcard/DCIM/camera/

OK, so now that I've backed it up in tar format, can I now delete all the other backups? Should I keep the original cyanogenmod 10 zip on my phone? And can I delete ALL the backups, then make fresh backups without compromising my phone?
All Is Well
AH HA!!! I've done it!!! I went into clockwork mod recovery and went to advanced settings, changed the backup format to tar, made a backup. then rebooted phone and went into SDMaid, and went to the file explorer and found the "clockwordmod" folder, opened it up, found "backup", then deleted everything EXCEPT the latest backup I made with the tar format. Then I backed up all my photos onto dropbox and I'm currently deleting the photos and vids from my phone. now I have 10.61GB free!!!

Gotta ask, did ur phone feel slow or something when u had 7gb free? Does it feel snappier now? I have had my memory down to 2gb and it still flew and was as smooth as when I have 9g of storage left. It makes no difference short of visually, but whatever crumbles ur cookies

the questions you had and what you found out was just what i was going to ask about haha!
so changing clockwork settings to tar will make a folder for each backup instead of dumping some stuff into "blobs"?
from what i understand (i could be wrong?) CWM dumps essential files into blobs and backups up the "changes" into the backup folder so if you make a few backups with the same ROM/kernel, it won't have to take as long or take as much disk space

I store my CWM backups in the default blob format, "dup" I believe it's called. I keep my older unneeded backups cleared out but have noticed blob files remain.
In looking at the backup settings, I saw the option to remove unneeded backup data. Just tried it and freed several GB of space that was being used by obsolete blob data.
This clears the space without changing backup format.
Thanks for giving me the nudge that made me take a look and figure this out!

It wasn't so much speed as it was having all the space I should have. I had files everywhere and folders galore so it was slower to navigate.

Well being that I'm brand new at all this since coming from my iPhone modding days, I'm not really sure what I was looking at or dealing with. I just went into cwm and set the backup to tar and let it run, then when I went back into sdmaid I saw it was a file that was around 160mb where the original was 150mb but then had all the extra files not in the main folder. So it could have been the same. So since I only saw the one folder for the tar version, I knew everything was in one spot, in a 160mb folder. I then deleted all the other stuff to free up the internal storage and I was good to go. What have I really truly done? PSH, no clue. But its working still haha. I'm tempted to go back in cwm and do one normal backup with all the blobs just in case...

Haha yeah, I just can't sleep at night knowing that I don't know everything that's going on in my devices. And this is still brand new to me so when I saw I was low on memory and getting "error low memory" messages and couldn't install any apps, I snapped and signed up here and posted this thread. Thank you for reading and I'm glad it helped you out.
And speaking of the "error low memory" or more accurately, "insufficient storage available", I found the cure...
Download the app called LuckyPatcher, open it up, click the menu and click troubleshooting, then click the "remove fixes and backups" then you're done.
Hello. As a happy owner of a DHD, I thought that I could try Kitkat, for one day or two, as I use my phone daily and a stable rom is a must.
For now I'm stuck with CM10.1, but I'm looking forward to the new release.
Anyway, I wanted to create a backup and neither CWM 5.8 Touch or TWRP 2.6.3 go past creating a backup of /data.
CWM just says Error: Could not back up image of /data or something like that, and TWRP says Backup Complete and Failed in red, below it.
Any ideas?
No, I don't have too much apps, TWRP says the ones I want to back up are as following:
Boot (4 MB)
Cache (76 MB)
Data (371 MB)
Android Secure (75 MB)
System (343 MB)
Over 10GB of free space on my microsd card (32GB, class 10), so it's not lack of space.
Help, I'd love to check out Kitkat and Ubuntu Touch...
Fix permissions

First fix permissions in TWRP recovery advanced tab.. then try backing up again.. If u can boot use backup software like titanium backup to backup app data and settings... You can restore the settings too..

I know about the possibility of using Titanium Backup, don't worry, the thing is that I wanted to see if I can just use the nand backup once, to make everything simpler.
I'll try the permissions and see, thanks for the tip
Edit:
Fixed permissions without problems, didn't work, same thing.
