I've mentioned this app before, but after searching the blackstone forum it doesnt seem to have its own thread.
http://recite.microsoft.com/Pages/index.aspx is the website.
Its a dictaphone but rather than having to give your recordings names you can simply speak what you're looking for. (ie, press record, say "daves new number is 123456" when you want to remember what daves new number is, press search and speak the words "daves new number" -it will find the recording with those words.
Unfortunately not a touch screen app, but it does still work on the blackstone.
If this, along with voice commander, live search and the language translator which is supposed to be coming to the marketplace, are any indication of where MS are going with WM. We're in for a very interesting ride I'd say

Guys here it is! Now you don't have to envy iphone 4s for having Siri. Now we have IRIS! Check it out! Already using it on my phone as my personal assistant and love it. And Iris sounds so much better than Siri, doesn't it?
And it was developed in 8 hours. [Read more...]
Doesn't work for me
Says "No speech input" when I launch it, and nothing happens when I touch the button.

Make sure you've got 'Voice search' and 'TTS library' installed. If not, download them from the market...
Superb development, Megastar! It is such a great innovation!
For those who are having problems in installing Iris, you need to have Voice Search and TTS library installed in your phone for IRIS to work. Most of the phones have these pre-installed, if not get them from the Market.
Great app
App works as it said, but my damn data connection seems to be too slow, need to force close the app.
while i have to say, i appreciate the effort and an 8 hour development time is impressive, i feel i must mention a few things about this.
First of all, nothing useful was presented in the video, which makes it kinda hard, determining, whether or not it can meet people's individual needs.
2. the video was cut and chopped dozens of times, but when you present a new piece of software, shouldn't you put in the takes where it worked?
3. for people that are actually eager to use an app, comparable to siri right now, to piss off apple fanboys or for whatever reason, you can try pannous voice actions from the market.
it has the same concept as this and siri, it combines regular voice control with witty answers like cleverbot. you can actually use it to call, text, set reminders... or ask it stuff. ask about trivia, your horoscope, the weather, to tell you a poem or a joke or just chat with it.
just like iris, it requires google voice search to work. it is free, so give it a try, while iris still being developed.
with a little xda magic, iris could overtake voice actions and siri in a matter of weeks, in terms of functionality, comfort and success rate though, the devs here always come up with the best stuff
btw. here are a few videos to give you an idea of how pannous voice actions works:

application is ok but ... Need more work. in any case, nice progress. Gj devs

voice actions app is better.
You should check out their twitter. http://twitter.com/#!/irisTalks
Apparently it's going to become supersmart in 2 days. And they will be implimenting more features eventually. Can't ****ing wait!
Definitely NOT ready for prime time. But fun to use just for the crazy answers Iris comes up with
good work man.. i already tried it and i think Iris need more updates to compete with Siri. I hv to admit that Siri is more smarter..
Iris should be able to use in other countries!
In Danish,
Why don't you try speaktoit? Free and works incredible fanstastic!
well, Irirs has a long way to go to be anywhere near the Siri, or Voice Actions for that matter.
Actually Voice Actions works very smooth, i installed the latest version called "Jeannie" from the market, and i does all that Siri supposed to do.
Also download Ivons Text to speech engine.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ivona.tts&hl=en
it complements the iris system with a natrual voice. has to be the best TTS engine i have heard. check it out. also you will also need to download the appropiate voice file aswell which is around 200mb
Yes, I know there is a Jeannie also available in the market. But IRIS is going to be very intelligent soon. Lookout for updates on twitter : @IrisTalks
I know it should be the same and we can call it voice action or voice search
but I tryed for example to set the timer and when I say " set timer for 10 minutes " it poped up the google seach and while it should set the alarm
am I missing something here or there a way to do that
I am on MoDaCo rom
It just worked for me by saying set alarm for 8am.
Most Voice Actions don't seem to work unless you have both the phone and voice language settings set to English(US).
Setting the alarm was definitely one of the ones which doesn't work if you're using another language.
Annoying as ****, and I wish Google would fix it. I don't know how they can claim to have launched voice actions in other countries when these basic things don't work. So now I have to put on a faux American accent while talking to my phone!
How are your Elvis impressions?
yes man you are right, finally got it worked:good:
I totally agree with you and hoping this got fixed soon
thanks brother

You may be right, but please don't forget that the version we are running is still nothing but a developers *preview* which has not been intended to be supplied to Non-US users to start with.
I am quite confident that by the time Google releases the final version in mid July, the will have implemented voice action- and also cards-support for other languages as well.
Cheers
CT
In my case I didn't need both set to English (US) to work.. following works for me:
OS level - Settings > Language & input > Language = English (US)
Google Now - Settings > Voice > Language = English (Australia)
*confirmed*
Thanks for the tip! I was trying to find a solution for an hour. I have 2 phones running Android 4.2, and I was wondering why one of them will set the timer and alarm correctly, while the other 1 will not. So this is confirmed: you DO need to set both the phone language and voice action language to English (US) for all voice actions to work.
*/ I have searched and haven't found a thread or topic that relates to my question, so I'm starting a new one */
So I have just upgraded to the official JB update for HOX last night and one of the most anticipated features that I've been waiting for is Google Now. I have activated and played around with the new voice search but then I realize that this is NOT the Google Now I have read about.
There are no cards, and even on the settings where screen captures by others show travel, appointment, etc, on the HOX it only shows Voice, Phone Search, Privacy & accounts.
Am I missing something here? Or is Google Now simply not available on the stock/official HOX Jelly Bean?
Any input is welcome.

It should at least bring up the weather for you on a card.
Also Google Now learns from your searches and intergrates that into cards for you - the more you search the more it will learn and revolve around you.
For example - search for football/ baseball scores of a specific team enough times and eventually Google now will bring up cards telling you when the next game is and after the game will bring up a scorecard.
Thanks for the quick response Wolverine. Like i said there was no cards, not even a mention of google now. On the SETTINGS (3 dots on bottom right corner) there was only Voice, Phone Search, Privacy & accounts. Google Now settings should be the first on that list above Voice.
Upon further, though difficult, googling I found out that Google Now only works on English (US) and English (UK) system language. My phone bought in Asia only has English (Indonesia), English (Singapore), and so on.
Downloaded "Set Locale and Language" free app from Google Play, set system language on English (US), rebooted, and there it was, Google Now in all its glorious cards.
Hope this helps others with same problem.

Hello,
I've seen some videos where the have the "voice input" option under Settings - Additional settings - Languages & input - SPEECH
But I only have "Text-to-speech output" there as an option.
Is it possible for me to use voice input (so that I can dictate texts and my mobile would write it)?
Best if this app/setting/possibility would not use Google since I live in China and would not like to make things more complicated and slower by using a VPN etc.
Thanks,
Chris
Hello.
You may try the Gboard, the Google Keyboard, which claims to add the "voice typing" feature. After the install, download the language files via its settings, and select the offline recognition. It may still use Google's servers if access exists (and which is more accurate for long transcriptions versus just commands) and use the local language files otherwise.
Note the voice recognition is OK, but not feature complete for lengthy transcription. It has very limited punctuation marks, new-line and new-paragraph often are not understood, errors are a pain to find (it underlines items with low confidence), making corrections are a pain, and the user learning seems non-existent. For example,
say, "I read a red book." gives, "I read a Redbook." (always)
say, "I read a blue book." gives, "I read a Blue book." (often)
Even with multiple corrections, over multiple days, the input and output above are still the same.
It works well for short transcription in SMS and short emails with mostly common words.

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation.
I was planning to use it to "write" my blog when I'm somewhere on the phone without a laptop. But after reading your description, it doesn't sound too promising.
It costs nothing to try it, except for a few minutes to install and run and 15 minutes to evaluate. You might find that the pro(s) outweigh the con(s), for you. My comments were only meant to inform not dissuade.
I use it to capture ideas while mobile, of which I can index and search.
Successful speech recognition require training to the specific user or a large enough dataset to compare to. This is why cloud-based approaches are en vogue. Microsoft Cortana (which recently gained parity with humans), Google Assistant, Samsung's Bixby, Nuance Dragon, are all cloud only. Google Voice Typing (included with Gboard) and CMU's Pocket Sphinx (for developers) are the only device based ones I have seen.
