how to get back s-on - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can not root my T-Mobile g2 so I'm returning it andgetting another one but NY phone is showing s-off,how can I get that back to s-on or does it even matter because the are exchanging it by mail?

Well if s-is off that means you can root you only need to get perm root. Download temp rootapk.and do the. Perm root flash recovery and your good to go.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Can you please tell how to do that?

http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/ this is the easy way to do it, just follow the steps and you will be fine . but if you say you have s-off tha means you can easly root, google the visionary .apk from modaco then open it like you would a regular app. then go to where it says perm root and select it. but make sure you have s-off then down load rom manager.apk and flash clockmod recovery all the files should be on the link i gave you.

How did you get it to S-OFF, what method of rooting were you using ?
I would be useful to put it back to S-ON if you can, though T-Mobile will probably not notice anyway.

Yelling at the device while it's in recovery might help

(q) DHD OTA update 2.2 to 2.3

Hello there, I have DHD 2.2 stock HTC in with root. My phone is radio s-off and installed custom recovery.
Today I recived OTA update 2.3, I was told that having root phone prevent OTA update. However, I have it now and I don't know if I have to update or not.
Will I lose the root, s-off and custom recovery if I update?
Will I be able to root again and install custom recovery?
Having root prevents you from actually installing the Ota's. Since your stock rooted the phone will still notify you of updates(unless the Dev desables it). So if you would try to install it it would t work and most likely you'll get stuck screen with the exclamation point I believe.
If you want to update you will need to ruu up to 2.3, then you can reroot with gingerbreak. This method will erase everything so make sure to backup
Here's the link to the 2.3 ruu that you run from your computer. Thanks goes to andyharney for the link.

Thanx for explanation, but I believes using RUU will return the phone s-on and remove the custom recovery. Is this correct?
The ruu will keep you s-off. It will delete the recovery but after you root using gingerbreak, you can reinstall it through rom manager

Hi! I might jump into this thread because I have exactly the same situation (except I am not running a custom recovery) but I have a big issue.
The micro usb port on my DHD does not work anymore. I've put off getting it repaired as I have 4 spare batteries and 2 chargers, so I've been able to get by.
Can I still RUU, then Gingerbreak without using the micro usb port?
Cheers!
One other thing - I have the Australian DHD - I did not see a listing for an Australian RUU - Would I need to go find one or could I potentially use a WWE?
What about un-root my 2.2 using visonary then install 2.3 with OTA after that root it with gengerbrake? Is this good plan? Will this remove recovery and s-off?
@RaindancerAU:
Well, RUU needs the USB port. You could try copying a .zip file to the root of your sdcard, then go into Bootloader and update it through there.
(You can get the .zip file from the RUU by opening the RUU.exe file and press 'Next' untill you reach the 'Checking device' - or something like that - part. Then just press - 'Windows key + r' - type %temp% and search the folders for a .zip file called ROM.)
As for you other question. If your phone is branded to a specific carrier, then using the carrier-specific RUU is recommended. If your phone isnt branded, ... , WWE is fine!

Gingerbreak requires S-OFF. By OTA'ing' S-OFF will still remain, but recovery will be replaced with the originnal HTC recovery.
So if you had S-OFF before updating, then Gingerbreak will work, hopefully

I have a similar scenario.
my phone came with 2.2 and I used the advanced ace hack kit and it successfully rooted, s-off'ed and have the ace hack kit recovery.
When I checked for updates, I was surprised it did prompt me for the OTA 2.3 update.
I am tempted to install it but I am not sure if it will unroot my phone and remove the recovery and if it does, then how do I get it rooted again and have rom manager recovery?
I am with Three Australia and I was hoping someone else had done this before and would like to share their experience with us.
Since your rooted the Ota's will fail to Install. If you want to stay stock I would just flash a prerooted version.
Personally though you should give custom roms a try and enter the fun
I have used an Ice Cold Sandwich custom rom and I loved it on my old DHD but this new one which I got as a replacement came with Froyo and for some odd reason, the WiFi is not working correctly. It connects but nothing get sent or received. I'm not quite sure if its the aahk that caused or it was an issue since I got it as I don't recall using WiFi on it before running aahk on it.
So I was hoping I could install this ota and check if it gets fixed, otherwise I will take it back to 3 so they can have a look and it would look like I have done nothing to it.
Hope this makes sense.
I'm really worried about applying this ota. I have taken a backup but would I get the chance to restore it if the ota update fail to install as you are saying?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You could restore, but the Ota's wont install at all. You'll get stuck on the screen with an exclamation point, and you'll need to pull the battery to reboot the phone.
What you could do is flash an ruu/pd98img of the stock rom to check the wifi issue. This way will get rid of root and cwr but its easily reattainable
I would not lose anything if I attempt it and fail? Just pull the battery out and I am back in business?
I will update to the latest ruu (Hutch AUS 3.12.861.2 PD9810000) from htc dev page but this will unroot the phone and remove cwr and put htc recovery. And then you want me to run the OTA update?
Just curious how easy it will be to root it and install cwr after I apply the ruu above.

First two questions correct. But their is really no point in attempting it unless out pure curiosity to see if fail.
If you flash the ruu, no need to apply the Ota's as the ruu is probably The Ota's its asking you to install.
Because you will still be soff even after the ruu, you could just install cwr via a pd98img. Then install a rom or backup. And even if you were son the hack kit would still be able to root your phone
I was as curious as a cat and you were spot on. It did fail.
The RUU I was referring to was from the htcdev page which is only 5.9MB and it's mainly to update hboot.
What I ended up doing last night was to apply this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843998 and the OTA still failed.
I guess it failed and when I checked, I still had cwr and hence why it failed.
I checked to see if I still had root and it was not. I was able to install superuser and this was all I needed to get root again. I did not think it was this easy.
I then ended up applying IceColdSandwich 4.0.0 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
I am going tonight to apply 4.1.1 which only got released today.
I have a question about pd98img. what things can I install using this method? Can I packages apk files and name the file this and it will auto install when I hboot?
Pd98imgs are used to flash a radio, a recovery, and a bootsplash(image before you see the bootanimation)
You can have zips that install apps for you. Those are flashed in recovery. I know icecoldsandwich has a overlay script to do that aswell when flashing that rom. You would just have to place your apks in the specified folder.(I believe its data/app/apks)

How can I unroot with no computer and s-on

Recently I tried to unroot my EVO and now nothing is right with my phone anymore. I was running synergy rc1 when I tried to unroot. I searched how to unroot and came up with a file from a ruu which I renamed to pc36img and flashed in the bootloader. What that did was downgrade my baseband to 1.39.00.05.31 and turn s-on. However when my EVO turned on it was still PARTIALLY ROOTED. I can run apps that require root and I was still on Synergy but I have an old radio and s-on.
Now what I want to do is either turn s-off and keep root and my phone the way it is or unroot fully and put my phone to stock. What I've tried so far is flash the unrevoked forever and the latest radio updates, neither of which would flash because of E: errors. Unrevoked wouldn't work because of radio being outdated and radio updates require nand unlocked.
I really just want to unroot but I need help here because I cant get my usb port to work so I can't use the computer. Is there a file I can put on my sdcard to fully unroot, and does anyone have a file like this to provide me with? I don't care if its the latest OTA I just want to unroot. If anyone knows a fix to this it'd be great. Please don't say search or why can't you use the computer I just want people that can help me. Thanks
And if you want to know which pc36img I used its the one located in the thread titled "how can I unroot without computer" in the post where the user says I'll one up you just download this file and rename it to pc36img and flash

[Q] Improper root g2

I have searched and searched multiple forums. Attempted different methods of rooting. I believe I may have done something wrong in the terminal emulator my first time but my problem is this; I cannot temp root with visionary, just get a black screen after I it says attempting. When I try to unroot, visionary says the device does not appear to be rooted. So cwr can't flash recovery cause it lacks permission. I have the superuser in the app drawer and security is off but when attempting to gain those permissions either through adb or terminal, I get denied. I'm on a stock rom, did factory reset but superuser app still exists. Can anyone at least point me in the right direction? I can't root/unroot, flash roms, etc. Maybe there is an extremely manual way of solving this? Btw first post. Noob video = hilarious.
Visionary has a very high brick rate. You really should have done a lot more research before you decided on how you wanted to root your device.
WARNING - Do not use Visionary to permanent root your G2/DZ - high brick risk!
There are some guides littered through out XDA about how to bring back a phone that's been semi-bricked by visionary. Look around and see if some them will help you out.
Thanks, I am sure I'll find one to help me out but i only used Visionary to temp root, then terminal to try and permroot.
It's a lot easier to root with adb, that way if anything goes wrong you can copy your exact cmd for faster help.
Chances are you need adb set up to downgrade anyway, for visionary to work. in which case you should just use the recommended method
-Nipqer
As long as you don't have gingerbread. Try the no abd required method. Twice.

I have tried every method out there. Couldn't downgrade because security was off. I am not rooted so methods to return s-on did not succeed. Will not let me fastboot flash a recovery (Failed: not allowed). So with all the different guides i've followed to a t, my g2 no longer boots past the htc logo, but I can get into boot loader. Am I bricked? if not I know i'm well on my way. All I really wanted to do was flash a recovery, which I should have done first to back up blah blah. That visionary method is what initially put me in the dirt, followed guide from another site before I found xda, I never used perm root through visionary just temp root, and tried to keep the root through terminal emulator. Where can I go from here? I do have access to another stock g2 that my buddy owns if that would help any
Code:
VISION PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.84.2000
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.08.04.30_M3
eMMC-boot
As long as you're on 2.2, using Visionary for temp root (only) should be safe. +1 to ianmcquin's gfree method.
Edit: Didn't see your last post as our posts were simultaneous. So you can't flash a PC10IMG file thru hboot?

Could you elaborate a little further? Security is off so flashing an official is bad or so I have read. Also, flashing through hboot? How would I accomplish this?
So I might be totally wrong here, but if you could put any pre-rooted ROM inside a PC10IMG zip file onto your SD card (you'll have to use a micro adapter or another phone to get it there)... then you should be able to boot into bootloader and flash it. Though I've never been in a situation with no root and S-OFF... can anyone confirm or reject this idea?

Is it safe to use the RUU to restore the phone with s-off?
Edit: No, no it is not XD
Okay. So I have the rom in a PC10IMG zip file on the root of my sd card. Now, specifically, what must I do to boot into said rom. If I can be helped I will do all the research in the world to avoid a noob situation like this again. Which so far seems very improbable thanks to this wonderful site and all the information I have absorbed trying to find a solution to my problem
Well, as I said, this makes logical sense to me, but I was hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself would confirm.... but if you want to try it you'll power down, then boot into bootloader by pressing the power button and volume down at the same time. Once in the bootloader, you should be prompted to flash the pc10img file. I think you'll press volume up to confirm and then the rest is automatic. But again, I don't know that this will work for sure... and I haven't been in your exact situation. If you want more details on flashing pc10img.zip files, I know it's out there on XDA. Also, in the event it works for you be sure to remove this file from your sd card right away... or rename it.

fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img or whatever
Solved; I was finally able to flash cwm after I had altered the hardware id's of the android 1.0 driver, flashed a pre rooted odex stock rom and wam bam thank you ma'am, phone is now operational. Thanks for your help guys =]

[Q] My phone is half-rooted

Ok, yesterday I was quite bored of my phone because it was pretty slow and there were many apps on it. Cyanogenmod looked like a good option so I decided to root my phone using unrEVOked 3.32 in this guide. UnEVOked didn't work, it came up with a "is your firmware too new" message. Everyone was saying how good revolutionary was, so I downloaded that and it came up with a message (cant remember what). I checked for Superuser app and tested to see if my phone was rooted, but all the apps said I wasn't. But when I go to the HBOOT menu, it says Revolutionary and S-OFF (before I used Revolutionary it said S-ON). I think this means my phone is half-rooted and I need to find a way to go back to the stock HBOOT and S-ON because my phones screen won't turn off (it just is very dark when you press the power button but you can still see the lockscreen).
In short I need to find a way to get back to the stock HBOOT and get S-ON again. I am also still quite a noob so I won't understand very technical instructions. Plz help
Revolutionary simply gives you S-OFF. And if in the last step, you selected Yes to install Clockworkmod Recovery, then it install Clockworkmod Recovery. To get actual root (ie Superuser), you must get the binary and flash it seperately. (Which is available here: - http://goo-inside.me/superuser)
Anyway, the procedure to get back to S-ON is stated here:

Reading a post in its entirety is so difficult for some people, innit?
Oh, sorry, thanks!

S-Off but on 6.16hboot w/o root access?

okay so i updated to the new rom by ruu method and i was already rooted when i did it. So here is the deal now, im trying to use root required apps and its telling me im not rooted the su binary is not installed or it is in the wrong directory so i click okay and i launch my phone into bootloader mode and it shows revolutionary s-off hb6.16.00 and i am not able to get into recovery mode. So am i really not rooted? Did the update only make ir look like my s is off?
what i want to do? I want to be on s-off and rooted for reals instead of fakey.
First download and flash amon RA FNMA thru bootloader. In that recovery you can flash superuser and binaries. There is an option for it. U are already s-off so you r almost there.
Support TrevE !!
Hey,
Did you install a recovery when you turned s-off? I had it happen once when switching roms that something must have went wrong between the rom and super user and I had to run recovery to get it back to a previous version of super user in order for it to work and be able to manage root, even though I already had s-off.
and if you didnt flash the recovery then:
defiantly listen to the post before me, go flash the amon recovery!
Good luck let us know how you do!
Your right steve i didnt flash a recovery but because i thought i could do it in my recovery after the ruu install but it turns out that the ruu must have taken it off because i have never really use ruu just zips so is there a clockworkmod file that i can change use in the bootloader flash update method?
Where can i find that other recovery program 2nd poster?
grabbed that recovery here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
then usb toggle through recovery to get the su flashed and good to go.
thank you
actually no bueno!! su app still wont update says root access failed when i try to update it and also busy box not installed and also i dl an app to check root access and it says root is not on device so what i have is a supersonic device with s-off and custom recovery working and also was able to flas su through recovery yet i still get messages from apps saying device is not rooted??? I guess i spoke to soon.
Im just going to try and flash a custom rom from recovery and hopefully the system files will load correctly i will do a nand back up for this one first of course.. ill be back.
i used energys newest release and holy kentucky durby batman it works my system files are back to root access.Maybe has to do with something then from the stock ruu bacause i went to the bootloader after putting energy back on and it says hb6.16.1002 which is what i got with the stock ruu i used, and s-off still and root access available. awsome.

Keep in mind that having S-OFF and having root access are two different things even though they are usually together: S-OFF allows you to flash whatever you want on to the phone while having root access means that you have access to basically every aspect of the phone (application-wise) on that specific ROM. For example, it is possible to flash stock (which has no root access) and keep S-OFF which will allow you to flash anything else whenever.
When flashing the RUU it overwrites the custom recovery ( Ra - TWRP ) and also removes the ability for Superuser to do its job. So you broke your " root " .
I don't know if it will work in your case but try to re-run whatever method you used to gain root access in the first place. See if you can find a PC36IMG.zip that is already rooted. and then a PC36IMG.zip of a recovery.
You can flash both by booting into the bootloader. Remember to remove / delete the first ( rooted rom ) image from the SD card before you run the recovery PC36IMG.zip.
Man I hope that all made sense !
hboot 6.16/s-off revolutionary/stock recovery/no root
I had the same issue. hboot 6.16 revolutionary s-off but i was not rooted and on the stock recovery. i thought i was a goner because no pc36img i downloaded would flash in bootloader and ruu's wouldn't flash. I just recently started revolutionary and when i plugged my phone in revolutionary said 'you are already s-off, do you want to flash revolutionary clockwork recovery?' Once I hit Y (yes) it flashed the recovery and i was rooted again. this took a whole lot of guessing and checking so hopefully this helps someone
