[q] ota update , newbie to root please help!! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

THX FOR YOUR HELP! It's really good to know you have a community of people willing to help a new guy, I really appreciate it.
Hi, I recently joined the world of root with my Evo 4G. I rooted via the latest unrevoked 3 and also unrevoked forever (s-off). After completing this process I switched my recovery file back to a PC36IMG file and applied the OTA update. It seemingly corrupted my Root until I updated to the new SuperUser zip (2.3.6.1) from Superuser 2.1. Note: I updated to the new Superuser app via sd card recovery AFTER I ran the ota and then flashed a custom recovery back. All works wonderful, still rooted and updated works well .
The problem comes into play when I tried to do the same for my friends phone. The root went well as well as the forever (s-off). In error I updated his superuser app BEFORE I ran the OTA , and now the update just fails everytime I try to install. I have tried several fixes via reading different post with similar issues but none have the exact problem.
I haven't flashed a rom before and would rather stick with the stock rom for my friends phone for now and just fix my mistake at this moment. Given that I updated my phone successfully I cant seem to understand exactly how I got off track with his. The only difference that I am aware of is the fact that I updated mine with superuser 2.1 installed and attempted to update his phone while 2.3.6.1 was installed.
If that difference is the culprit I've tried to flash back to superuser 2.1 and it seemS impossible. What can I do to get back on track. thanks again in advance.

If you have S-OFF and Amon Ra Recovery 1.80 on his phone, then I highly suggest that you just flash one of the stock rooted roms based on 3.70.651.1. There are a few of them out there. They are stock and usually only add busybox and superuser to the rom. They usually come in 2 flavors: odexed and deodexed. if you ever plan to apply themes to the rom then go with deodexed.

[Q] Problems doing the lastest OTA update?

The last two times I have tried to install the latest update (2.2 I believe) to my EVO, it has downloaded just fine but then seems to crash when it tries to do the actual install.
What I get is a screen showing the little green android next to an oblique triangle with an exclamation point in it. Everything stops at that point.
I have previously rooted the phone (no nand though) so I could install the android wireless tether, etc. Other than that though, I have not done too much with the phone. It's been running fine, so I have no idea what may be causing the new OTA update to crash.
(I've heard there have been some problems with the update and I really do want to be able to re-root the phone after the fact, if that could be a problem..so as far as that goes I'm in no hurry.)
Still, does anyone have any idea what might cause the latest update to crash? Should I perhaps manually copy it to my SD card and try running it from there?
Thanks,
JTT
You probably have a custom recovery so you can't OTA
OP,
You trying to maintain root? Then don't flash the OTA. If you are tryign to get back to stock, then run the 2.2 RUU file. That will wipe your phone and you will get stock - and NO root.
the question is how did you root the phone?....
in the end to keep root its, apply the 1.47 ota update, install unrevoked3, unrevoked forever, install stock recovery, update to 2.2 froyo, install custom recovery, install superuser app, then BAM you are rooted on 2.2

Don't take the 2.2 OTA if you want to maintain root.

Q> My phone is rooted.. how do I get the OTA update?

I want the new update on my EVO.. it is rooted with Unrevoked or revoked..
When I run the OTA update it goes to the screen with the android and a Triangle with an ! in it..
What do I need to do to get the new update?
Here are 3 scenarios that will help you out:
1. You can unroot by running an RUU, take the update, and lose root user access. There is currently no method to attain root user access on the new OTA update.
2. *IF you performed a root method in which you flashed UNREVOKED FOREVER - You can unroot, accept the OTA update, flash AmonRa PC36IMG.zip and still retain root user access
3. You can manually update the radios, wimax, etc; and then flash the STOCK root version of the OTA update from the dev section.
Good luck, and ask any questions you need.
You are already rooted so the easiest way to get the new update is to flash a rom based on the new update. I personally use fresh 4.1.1, but there are tons of options to chose from.
You have gotten great suggestions and help above and my suggestion would be before going any further do alot more research. There is a lot of helpful information in here but none of it will help you at all if you dont read it.
I believe your best route is to go with the thoughts of the second posters scenarios and good luck. Have fun with your Evo but read OP's and stickies because in all honesty you could of been updated your new radios and rom within 20 minutes if you were already rooted.
Stock Rom - all the info can be found in his OP
i was android 2.2 then installed kings rom and it out me to 2.3.3
Can someone elaborate a bit on this point:
2. *IF you performed a root method in which you flashed UNREVOKED FOREVER - You can unroot, accept the OTA update, flash AmonRa PC36IMG.zip and still retain root user access
Not sure what I used but I suspect unrevoked forever but I"m not sure. When i tried grabbing the OTA, i wound up in a recovery screen I think. Can I disable root from in there, grab the OTA, and then download this AmonRa or should I just apply an image already floating around? Someone suggested Fresh 4.1.1
@joeynuggetz
Im not sure how to step back out from the recovery after trying ota, but I WILL say, to all who care about keeping root, just use one of the roms in the dev section that is stock with root. There are a few.
But yes, as was said earlier, if you used unrevoked forever (and only you know), from what I've read you can take ota, then reapply amonRA using the pc36img. (Im only reiterating what has already been suggested)

[Q] Unrevoked expert needed

Trying to get what I thought was a simple question answered, but no luck so far, in some other threads, and other forums.
I am s-off via unrevoked forever (for a long time now). I have only ever taken Sprint OTA updates via unrevoked's recommended method of first reverting to a stock recovery, then taking the OTA, then reverting to a CWM recovery, and re-applying su.
Never had any issue with staying rooted this way.
Along comes GB. So, I flash back to stock recovery, take the 1st GB update, no problem. I then re-flash CWM recovery, and reapply su, no problem. I'm rooted again, still s-off, all my root apps still work fine, and I'm running Sprint GB.
Along comes the 2nd GB update (maintenance release). I try to flash the stock recovery, it appears to flash ok. But, if I try to boot into it, I just get the triangle-exclamation (which I think means no recovery is present). And, I cannot take the OTA. It errors out.
I can re-flash CWM recovery with no problem, and boot back into it, either though ROM Manager, or a volumeDown-Power cycle. s-off is still there, root apps still work, so I'm rooted.
I am, however, at hboot 2.16, I guess since I took that first OTA.
So, I'm at hboot 2.16, with s-off, and rooted, with CWM recovery.
So, why can't I flash that stock recovery in order to be able to take that 2nd GB OTA?
Thanks.
dude...f***ing AWESOME ROM!! i had no idea that you could do that with the evo!!
watch the video in my sig....will answer a few question! k thx!!
Why don't you flash the update from the forum like most people do, or possibly user one of the infinitely better roms available at this time that integrate the update, like synergy, mik's, misfits, ect.ect.ect.

fYI - you posted in the wrong section and you are going to get flamed... Also if you rooted your Evo to flash roms why do you unflash them to take OTA updates when they are all over xda development. My friend you are only asking for trouble and it seems to of found you....
My goodness people do some damn research before doing anything.. Quite sure you have a good reason for rooting then unrooting to flash something thats on every page in xda... Quite sure you have your reasons

Love the video. I already Thanked You. Please can you tell me where the XXXDA site is...
I Am no Expert with unrevoked but I am fimilar with it when you say your were trying to flash a stock recovery and got the triangle with an explanation mark that is what i believe is a stock recovery and it is looking for a pass card in the sdcard slot that techs use to reflash rom as to the second update you said you have hboot2.16 with s-off that is more than likely why your are getting the error the second update unroots the phone and returns the phone to s-on and will not let you root so be glad the second update failed as some of the others have said just install one the stock rooted updates and all will be fine and you will still have root
Sorry 4G peeps

taking latest ota while rooted with revolutionary

My HTC EVO came with the 2.3 update already installed, I rooted using Revolutionary. The latest OTA update appeared on my phone yesterday, and I decided to go ahead and install it. It wouldn't install using Clockworkmod Recovery, so I installed RA recovery. The update then installed correctly, I didn't know that RA recovery would be able to finish the update since Clockworkmod didn't work, but it did. The update did not remove root privileges, my phone remained rooted after the update. I did have to run the superuser zip installation from recovery after the process because Titanium backup, or Rom Manager weren't able to acquire root privileges. But after booting to recovery and running the superuser zip file again, superuser privileges were restored. So I just wanted to let you guys know in case you were wondering if this would remove your s-off, it doesn't. I am now on 4.53.651.1, after updating to latest OTA with s-off. Again use RA recovery to install the update.
If u flashed the stock rom posted here on xda you didn't loose root because the rom was already rooted by the dev who uploaded it silly...

Hey welcome to the Evo forums and I am glad that worked out for you. But as the poster above me noted all you had to do was just flash a rooted 4.53 rom and you would of been fine. I would like to suggest not to try that in the future or really direct others to try since it may break root.
Also to save yourself some bashing I suggest you put post like these in the General section or Q&A and not Development. Since this section is just for Roms, Kernels and such.
Once again glad it worked out for you and enjoy
Thats not what I stated, I said my phone came with 2.3 preloaded, I rooted it using revolutionary, then took the ota update.
I will post in different section next time.

It's because Revo. replaces it with a custom Hboot that OTA's cannot overwrite, like the unrevoked method, if they pushed an update it would also update all the legit developer phones, so taking an ota can make you lose root, but not s-off, and root is easily obtained with s-off.

[Q] Re-root?

I rooted my EVO and installed custom ROMs until around the fourth OTA which said it removed rooting or something (didn't read everything, saw unroot and I was happy with the current version). However, it's been a long time and my phone has slown down plus there's Android updates. I don't remember what my rooting method was (it was the very first method when the phone came out), but do I have to 1) undo the original root and/or 2) use the newest root method for the latest superuser ROMs? I have root access, a bootloader, custom recovery...several tools already, but I don't now if they're updated for user the latest superuser ROMs or tools. Thank you.

As long as your s-off your fine all you have to do is flash a Rom. Make sure you make a backup and wipe everything except sd card. No need to unroot then reroot.

If you're s-off, just update your recovery (Amon Ra 2.3 has been the most stable for me) and flash a new rom. You may want to go ahead and update your radios and whatnot before flashing the rom. Remember to not pull the battery after the radio flashes.
The rom will have updated superuser etc as long as it's a recent rom.
