its real easy flash the unrevoked s-on tool untill the bootloader says s-on it may take more than one time it may not after that flash the ruu with the build that came with your phone

So I download the file to my card then what? I'm lost here sorry
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Unrevoked 3.21/3.22 automatically runs Unrevoked Forever after the rooting is done (this is the very last step of the process before your phone boots up). That's why you end up getting NAND unlocked (S-OFF).
So you are looking to go back to stock and do not want to run Wireless Tethering anymore yes?
Download the S-ON tool and place it on the root of your SDcard (not in any folders). Go into recovery and flash the S-ON file and it hopefully should make your phone S-ON again.

Thank you. I'll try that! I'll let you know.

So it flashed the s-on and no luck. Done it twice ashtray and no luck. Should I keep trying?

From the unrevoked forever wiki page, it says to download the s-on.zip and flash it. If its not working, try re-downloading another unrevoked-forever-son.zip file and try again, otherwise I'm not sure what else to tell you, sorry.
[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS
This unroot guide written by djR3Z says to keep trying until it works.

Do you have radio version 2.15.00.11.19? I know you cannot S-OFF while on this radio version, so maybe you cannot S-ON either.
You will need to downgrade the radio first to 2.15.00.09.01. My real suggestion is to flash the mtd-eng.img hack, RUU back to 3.30, S-ON, RUU to 3.70.

I just finished! Had to flash a recovered rom. Stock rom that is. It was quite the process but I did it! Thanks for the help everyone!

[Q] Unrooted: Why still S-OFF?

I just unrooted my phone by running the RUU update for 3.29.xxx and at bootloader screen, it is still showing S-OFF. Shouldn't it be S-ON? I'd appreciate some feedback as I am heading back to the sprint store and want to be sure the phone is completely unrooted. I recall the other time I ran this same procedure, it went back to S-ON.
TIA
You need to flash the Unrevoked s-on tool. It can be found in several unrooting threads.

Thanks. I suspect it was the tool I used to root that had the Unrevoked component (never had this problem first time around); should've read the fine print...

so you need to re-root (maybe with unrevoked even) and then flash the s-on tool through recovery. it can be found in the unrevoked wiki. after that, then run the ruu.

glad i could help. another reason people dont like unrevoked is it is now outdated. if you run it with the new protected hboot 2.02, you will get screwed pretty bad.
it used to save people hours of struggle, now it kills ruthlessly (haha)
Just flash this as PC36IMG.zip:

Does this downgrade HBOOT to .76.2000? If not, please list the exact steps + files to use. I have copies of Hboot_0.76.2000.zip and Hboot_2.02.0001-Patch but not sure of the other in which to flash them.
Thanks.
EDIT: I was able to get back S-ON, although I observed that bootloader doesn't show the updated value after flashing the unrevoked-s-on zip; not until you attempt to flash the stock PC36IMG file. The above RUU allowed me complete the unrooting process (now with hboot 2.02).
I guess the other pressing question is why do I need hboot 2.02 and not .93 or .76.2000?

[Q] NewB needs Help installing Rom =(

Ok.. so I'm absolutely new to this rooting and flashing roms and stuff. I want to install the SkyRaider 4.0 ROM. I believe the first step I need to do before I can install this ROM is to root my phone? Do I do this through Unrevoked or through ADB??? Like in this link? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709220 . I checked the WIKI for DInc and it doesn't mention anything about ADB.. So do I need to do that??
So lost. Thanks so much for your help guys
Use the unrevoked program, its so simple, literally one click. Once you have root you'll want to make a backup in recovery before you flash skyraider.

Thanks. So what's up with ADB? Will I need it at all? Do I need to follow the guide as in the link I posted above?
First root using the unrevoked program as mentioned above. Then post back for more help on the ROM flashing.
I wouldn't worry about adb right now. Don't need to use it for rom, kernel, radio flashing.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Honestly, I've never even had to use ADB. Definitely not required. It's nice to have sometimes. But usually something like root explorer will suffice.
*should have refreshed first.

Gotcha. So what's the diff between Unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever? http://unrevoked.com/#inc
Unrevoked forever gives you permanent root. That is definitely the way to go, and the best way to get your ROM successfully flashed. ( And stay that way ).
Also let's you flash unsigned files in hboot, like radios and splash screens.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Just thought I'd add that you can also go back to stock S-ON later on if needed (warranty replacement, etc).

And in case he doesn't know what S-ON and S-OFF means, it refers to the state of the security "flag" on your device. With S-OFF, your warranty is void, however you can turn the security back on as well if you need to take it into verizon or something.. Using unrevoked forever, it will turn S-ON to S-OFF.
Can SkyRaider work with S-ON? aka without dealing with Unrevoked Forever at the moment?
No, I don't believe it will. Is there a reason not to do unrevoked forever? It take less than 5 minutes to complete

You should be able to. S-OFF is the way to go through, you can still revert S-ON later.
The whole "security" title it has is meaningless against actually security of your phone, with S-OFF you're more free to tweak your phone.

I see, but I hadn't done unrevoked forever (yet I still had root) and flashed over my first ROM... didn't have much luck. It ended up reverting to stock everything automatically, which was really strange. Haven't had any problems since S-OFF though.

Huh, thats odd. I was rooted and S-ON when I first did my starter ROM: SkyRaider 2.something lol. Didn't encounter any problems except for wonky audio with flash, but that was an easy fix. That was back when stock Incs were rockin' Eclair lol... Sorry bout my off topic reminiscing :S

[Q] Help!!!! phone is on v2.3.3 with S-OFF NEED to turn S-ON

I tried to root my husbands htc evo phone but it was interrupted and was not able to try again. He was able to update the software when sprint sent it out but somehow when I went into his bootloader it has S-OFF. I need to return the phone to sprint. Is there any way I can turn S-ON again?
How were u trying to root? Which process?
Taking my experience into account:
Ive been rooted with unrEVOked...and unrooted using the Stock RUU zip. BUT....prior to that...S-on needs to be recovered. The process in which Ive used was following the enclosed link.
Hope it helps...good luck.

If it is S-OFF, just run a stock RUU EXE file... 3.70 seems to work just fine. it will return the device to complete stock, including the bootloader for 3.70 release/ship.
The only way to get s-off to s-on is to flash the unrevoked s-on tool. You can run the RUU all you want and return the partitions to stock, s will still remain off. Well it should anyhow, strange things happen sometimes...
That link in the second post gives you both. Flash s-on then flash the RUU, dont go the other way around...

Is the phone stock currently? If so just flash the s-on tool, it should work (though I havent heard anyone attempting this yet). If you need to return partitions to stock or an older version of android then run the RUU.
also PM a Mod and ask them to move this to Q please, only post developed work in the DEVELOPMENT section...

Did the update change the Hboot version from 2.10 to 2.16?
Power off the phone, hold Vol Down and Power and wait for Bootloader to run to see which version is on the device.

This is wrong. I was S-OFF since June of 2010 when I bought it and rooted, I just recently had to return my device and get it swapped. I simply ran the RUU Exe, I then made sure to check because I didn't want to return it with S-OFF, and it was S-ON. I didn't run any S-ON Tool or anything else other than the RUU Exe.

The reason yours switched to s-on is because the root method you used included the ENG bootloader. If the root method included unrevoked forever then the only way to achieve s-on is with the s-on tool. So no, he wasn't wrong he could have been more thorough in his explination that's all.

[Q] UNROOTING_Evo 4g for service

ok guys I have tried just about all threads and searches,I been at this since 9 am and still no results.I need to take my phone in so I need the S-on,I was on Synergy Rom tried to use unrevoked forever which didnt work I was on amon ra recovery but switched to clockwork where I had backups and tried unrevoked forever and still no S-on, My software info is as follows : baseband:2.15.00.05.02
software #3.29.651.5 and pri version is 2.15_003 : My hboot is 0.97.0000, I unrooted actuallly a couple of times and never had this problem followed the directions before and they worked to perfection.I believe the problems exist with my radio # as this is the error that my recovery is giving me : stating unsupported radio version .Any help please thank you
Downgrade your radio to an unrevoked compatible version. Then flash unrevoked forever. Should be that simple.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Try downgrading your radio first to the version that came with 3.29 so it matches the software. Don't worry about the S-ON. Leave it off that way when u take it in even if anyone applies some sort of update you will still be good. Also, did you use unrevoked originally to obtain s-off?
Do Flash only the radio ? Meaning I found the correct radio do I have to worry about my wimax keys or does in come with the radio I'll be flashing ?
1) You're trying to get it s-on, but you're flashing unrevoked forever. Unrevoked forever gives you s-off, you'd need the s-on tool instead.
2) Sprint will service your phone if it is s-off, so leave it off to keep the possibility of rooting open. If the store tells you otherwise, tell them to double check Sprint's policy.
3) You will however need to flash it back to stock unrooted. Run an RUU from your computer or as a PC36IMG through your bootloader to achieve this.
Bonus - Even if your phone has to be replaced, hopefully Sprint/HTC/whoever won't flash it back to s-on and someone on xda will get lucky and get your s-off refurb. Either way I wouldn't bother with the s-on tool, just run the RUU and you'll be set.

How to restore Nandroid backup?

The kicker is, i lost root on my phone... no Recovery.. i can get into HBoot...
My phone is always stuck on reboot loop.. theres a few odd times where it makes it into OS but then reboots again.
So I was going to my old files and noticed that I still have my Nandroid backup, so if i put this back onto my phone, will it be saved?
I cant even get it too root without the phone rebooting..
What root method did you use? What hboot do you have? Are you still s-off? What were you running prior to this happening like rom ect ? Have you tried a RUU yet? This type of information can help people try to figure out how to fix it

I think you do, I believe most root methods use a combination of adb and fastboot. After you install it, make sure you're running the root method from the same directory as adb.exe and fastboot.exe are in (should be platform-tools).

Can you access your sdcard? Because if you can download a recovery and rename it PC36100.ZIP and put it on the root of your sdcard. When you go to your bootloader just go into the menu with the recovery option (Cant remeber atm) and it should come up asking you if you want to update the file.
