[Q] Fact or Fiction Re: OTA 3.70.651.1 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read that if you are using a stock rom and updated to 3.70.651.1 OTA then you don't have the ability to root. Is that true or am I just not understanding what I've read? I'd like to root to take advantage of wifi tethering for free. Also, if I'm free to root, any recommendations for which ROM to use would be appreciated.
Thanks

Nope I'm pretty sure you are good to go. Click me for some quick info I dug up
Best ROMs in my opinion:
Fresh: Sense
Myn's: Sense
CyanogenMod: AOSP

Well...according to this thread, [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 S-OFF - Got the Game Upset Edition - Updated 12.16.10, it states that if have the newest radio (2.15.00.11.19), it will not work although some have claim they could.
You can root your phone now and then just flash a rooted stock ROM or a custom ROM based on build 3.70.651.1.

You can, they posted a new method tonight....but theres only been one success for someone on 0004 hardware.

Fresh: Sense
Myn's: Sense
CyanogenMod: AOSP
Thanks. I'll check these out. I'll also check out each of the threads posted above, but I guess I'm still a little confused. It seems like you're all saying that it can be done, just with varying levels of success. I have the latest radio (2.15.00.11.19) so it seems like that may limit my options, correct?

Yeah, unfortunately that's just how it is. Take Unrevoked 3.21 for example. It was suppose to be a simple one click method to root the EVO but if you go look at their thread, at least half the people who used it were able to run it succcessfully with no problems at all and the other half ran into some kind of issues.

[Q] Which Rom Has What ?

Hi All,
long time reader, 1st time poster,
i have switched from the nexus to the desire, and i have seen lots and lots of diffrent roms for the desire, so i was wondering if i may ask your assistance in locating the best one?
which rom most people prefer ?
what advantages does X rom have over X rom ?
i currently have a desire running 2.2 froyo if there is anyone else switching which could suggest a good switch ?
Hi,
I'm fairly new to this whole rooting business myself and certainly not an expert on advising which is is the 'best'. A lot would depend on your needs and preferences. For my use, however, I found the ROM at :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
to be very stable and to my liking. It is virtually the same as an OTA update of Froyo, except it is rooted and has some miner modifications.
Read a lot and try different Roms; I'm sure you'll find one to your liking and needs.
Hi Mag,
Thanks for your advice, it sounds like a nice easy starting mod,
btw how did you root the phone to start with ?
i have tried the current REVOked client but that seems to fail each time.
so i was debating sitting back and waiting for REVOkeds new 3.2.1 client to be released for download.
Here is what I did with my very limited knowlage about rooting:
1. I made my working sd card into a 'gold card'. Not sure if that was necessary or not, but it couldn't hurt.
2. I downgraded from OTA froyo to the 2.1 version.
3. Then rooted my phone using Unrevoked3.
After that I was able to update to any rom using clockworks recovery only.
Everything went very smoothly for me without any hickups.
You can find all the needed details about the individual procedures above, on this great site. Search and you will find .
Hope this is of some help.
Mag
PS.: Unrevoked at, http://unrevoked.com/#inc, is suposedly working on a new version that is able to root Froyo without having to dowgrade to 2.1 first.
Unrevoked's rooting solution is already out for the Desire FYI
Here is the link for it
http://unrevoked.com/
Be advised that they have removed the current version because it had some issues with the Evo 4G but the older 3.2 is still up and flawless for the Desire.
Unrevoked Desire
Sadly I had major driver issues with my current PC and couldnt root my phone as of yet.. but will do it in a couple of days when i get my new PC So I cant provide feedback as of yet... But the Wiki page of Unrevoked has pretty much everything covered up for you
Hope I helped a little
yeah the current version means you need to downgrade to 2.1. but id rather go straight into rooting, than mess about with downgrading 1st.

[Q] post/pre OTA explaination?

Could someone explain or point me in the direction of an explanation for how installing a custom rom affected automatic updates, as well as the difference between pre and post ota, and why we can't install a pure clean android 2.2 installation in our phones. I am relatively new to this, but did alot of iPhone hacking before.. I've already rooted, S-OFF and flashed a few different roms having my phone 2 weeks and new to android hope someone can explain, thanks :_)
When you flash a custom ROM, you will no longer get the automatic updates OTA. Either you will have to revert to the stock ROM for the update, or the ROM developer will have to incorporate the OTA update changes into the ROM.
There are a few ROMs that attempt to give you a plain vanilla Android experience. But in my opinion, Cyanogen is one of the best mixes of plain Android with lots of extra features.
Okay that makes sense, I'm currently using a villian rom with no sense, is it worth my while installing cyanogen? and if so will i go with RC4 of wait for the stable release?

Well, the reason for many semi-bricks from trying to downgrade to original stock rom pre- or post-OTA was the fact that hboot was hacked, and not truly "S-OFF." If you search the dev section you will find the S-OFF, SIM unlock, SuperCID guide that will give you true S-OFF. I recommend reading that--it helped elucidate why semi-bricks were showing up. Once this is done, it should be easy to flash a rooted, stock ROM when the OTAs start showing up and get the update that way, or just wait for it appear in the forums (which is usually sooner than the OTA gets pushed out, anyhow).
So the S-OFF I have isn't complete? Not that I need a sim unlock as I bought the phone off contract, but it's worth my while getting the true S-OFF? Thanks for all ye're help, there are so many people talking about these things in every section it's hard to pull a search of a simple explanation,

Yes, the previous S-OFF was via an engineering version of HBOOT, which was set to report S-OFF. But the security setting is actually held in the radio, and was still S-ON.
The new, "true" S-OFF (via gfree) is a lot safer than the old method, e.g. much less prone to a brick if you flash the wrong thing (e.g. an older RUU than the ROM you're running).

Updating OTA After Root

My first post here
Ok so I rooted my HTC EVO with Unrevoked and loved it. Everithing is working just fine. Lately I am getting the OTA Update request but I denied it since I read I could brick my phone. I found on this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251 what I think i need to update the OTA but dont know the difference between Deodexed Version and Odexed Version... What do I need to use or do to Update the OTA...is it different than rooting?? Thanks for your help!
Software 3.29.651.5
Android 2.2
Just flash a rom. Most available now are based off the 3.70 ota. Deodexing is process that allows for easier theming. Odexed roms will boot up faster and are basically completely stock.
Sent from my HTC Supersonic
Yup new rom flash. I'd you like sense I suggest myn's warm twopointtwo, but for aosp you can't go wrong with cyanogenmod. Look around a bit. most all round come deodexed these days & I would suggest it. Odexed is apparently not notoceably faster, but I can't say since i've never used an odexed rom. Deodexing is basically taking all the framework files & making a new path for them. Correct me if I'm wrong
Thanks for your replies, i really never tried to flash new roms in my phone since I dont know much about it but I will read around...what king of guidelines you can use to select the ROM you will use since y see there a lot of different around

[Q] stock update S-OFF phone

I've used the search but frankly, the vBulletin search still sucks after all these years.
I rooted the phone following this guide. Now my phone says a system update is available.
Since I would like to install it (my phone is still 1.34, I think. The latest version should be 1.72, right?) and installing a stock update onto a S-OFF phone is highly inadvisable (I've read), how do I go about this?
I have Visionary installed but it says the phone does not appear rooted, even though it is (just checked).
I'm sure there have been others with similar questions and I just couldn't find the right thread. If so, please point me in the right direction.
Regards and thank you,

Why did you root your phone? There is no need to update your phone to the latest OTA update if you are wanting to install custom ROMs.
Because I was testing custom mods and wanted to go back to stock?

ahhh, I thought you had just rooted it. I updated the day after I received my new phone. I had problems with bluetooth (music wouldn't resume after ending phone calls) and wound up here on the XDA forums looking for answers. I ended up rooting my phone, installing CM6 and now CM7 and never looked back. There is no bluetooth switching problems using CM builds so I'm happy.
Found this:
http://www.thinkthinkdo.com/trac/project1/wiki/back_to_stock
Thanks, that looks interesting. Now the only question: Do I need my original CID? And if so, how do I find it now that the CID has been changed by gfree?
That link is about a procedure to restore the stock G2 ROM. Since you seem to have a DZ ROM, I'm not sure if you want to flash a G2 ROM (though the other bits might be useful).
The 1.72 OTA update has been rootable for some time now, so you can safely accept the update if you want. But it might be easier just to flash the 1.72 ROM in its entireity (you can get it from the dev forum).
With SuperCID and S-OFF you should have no problems flashing 1.72.

Really? Then I don't quite understand the stickied warning thread that says to never, ever attempt that.
Anyhow, I gave the Virtuous mod another go. Since it has sense and 1.72 I'm thinking of testing this one out a bit more, before I go flashing stock.
Thanks for the replies, though.

[Q] n00b wants root - has latest ota.

I'm late on the bandwagon.. my first android phone, Evo4g running GB.
I've had it a few weeks now and also accepted the latest ota a week or two ago.
Hboot 2.16.0001, radio 2.15.00.0008, broadband 2.15.00.0808, kernel 2.6.35.10-g13578ee (or was it cc). Sw 4.53.651.1
what are my chances of rooting and putting on CM71? Base.d on the wiki, it looks like I'm out of luck, even with unrevoked. What about htcdev.net for obtaining s-off?
I'm also confused on how to get back to stock if I ever need to take the phone back (yes, I've read the readfirst doc), including getting rid of cwmod - back to 100% stock. Is there a way to backup my existing rom/kernel/?? and using that as opposed to an older img?
There's just too much info and old threads saying 'latest' to make it confusing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
As far as what mod to use, I'm anticipating cm71 basically because it looks about the most full featured and stable. I have no idea what 'sense' is other than being htc's launcher. I prefer goLauncherEx so if there's something that sense provides that my underprivileged mind doesn't know about feel free to enlighten me.
thanks tons!!
I second this question, I was given a HTC Evo 4g as a replacement phone from sprint after having 3 Epic 4g's and 2 Nexus S 4g's in 7 months. I would like to root this because it has so many unwanted apps.
Noob wants root? Noob should do some searching first. Answers to literally every question up there are already asked and answered 500 times.

If you have 4.53.651.1, then UnrEVOked should work... not sure on 4.54.651.1, which was the latest OTA security update package, though.
Have you even tried UnrEVOked, yet? Or HTCDEV.com? I would imaging that there is always a way...
ok first of all there are a lot of people here willing to help, but first you need to help yourself. do the research, and find out what method will work to root your phone. then read it at least 3 times. then when you start rooting your phone and get stuck people will be more willing to help. i personally rooted my phone a while ago so i have no idea as to what method would even work for you. second make sure you do a nand back up from your recovery when you get one. that will at least take you back to your stock rom, and to get back to s-on well like i said do the research and read read read. good luck and happy flashing

With latest ota, use revolutionary like a couple has posted. Unrevoked will not work on the gingerbread firmwares for the EVO. You need revolutionary.
It's simple and straightforward.

Thanks to all!
The issue was the overabundance of information and trying to weed out the non-current... not that I wasn't searching and reading.
I'm now up and going with synergy RLS1 (non-godmode)+chopsuey9.2.7+Amon RA Style Supersonic recovery 3.07.
Again, thanks for the assist!
right on glad you made it even if you were late to the party have fun and remember to make a back up and wipe wipe wipe happy flashing
