I have some AVI files on my SD card and open them with the app rock player and when I plug in my HDMI cable to my tv it dosent work...why? Is there a way to develope an app that would let you tell it when the output should work?
Thanks in Advance!
This is a known problem with the evo, using the stock rom, the HDMI functionality is limited. Rumor is that someone has developed a true hdmi out driver on the cyanogen team, but I can't comment about when that will be baked into a rom. CM7 nightlies are the best bet as to when though.
My hdmi doesn't work either. When I plug it in everything is good when I try to go to a pic or vid the phone reboots and gets stuck on the splashscreen until i pull the hdmi cord out and pull battery.
Thats because your tv probally only has support for HDMI 1.3 micro HDMI needs HDMI 1.4 to work, this has provided alot of heartache to people, it makes no sense to me, because micro HDMI still uses a 19 pin connector just like regular HDMI just smaller but for some reason only 1.4 supports micro (sorry for the lengthy answer this has been very frustrating to me...)

How can I figure out which one my tv support? Its a 60" mitsubishi. My hdmi works fine with my ps3 on 720 and 1080p

hdmi not working
i have two evos one has the 0003 hardware and the new one has 0004, the 0003 works perfect with my cable but the 0004 doesnt even recognize the phone, any ideas thanks
As far as I know right now HDMI is only supported when using hardware playback. The you tube player uses hardware so will output to HDMI. Also the internal video player as well as the HTC streaming video player. The only file types that seem to work with hardware playback are either mp4 or wmv's. I dont use wmv much, but I did get one to work with the HDMI. I havent looked into it but apparently someone on the Droid X forum (might of been another phone, can't remember) was able to get full UI on HDMI and maybe, just maybe they were going to port it to the EVO. It would be nice if the Cyanogen team can get it working with their rom. If fact I would donate to see that happen.

Could one really use this as a desktop PC running Android or is the HDMI connector doomed to a life of powerpoint presentations in corporate board rooms and showing phone-captured pics & video of the kids after vacation on the shiny HDTV?
Here's my logic, I want to be able to plug my evo into the USB/HDMI dock and have it function as a 'reasonable' machine for browsing the web and listening to music. We have root, so USB host, among other necessities shouldn't be an issue there.
Now, from the HDMI 1.4 spec, this thing ought to be capable of all of the following
Raw Bandwidth: 10.2 Gbit/s
Video: maximum resolution to 4K × 2K
Audio Formats: LPCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio, MPCM
Networking: HDMI Ethernet Channel, which allows for a 100 Mb/s Ethernet connection between the two HDMI connected devices;
Certainly, one would be dreaming to expect 4k x 2k video playback on this processor combination but what do you think about the HDMI Ethernet channel? With an extremely pervasive network in my home this is very interesting to me.
Maybe these features are too niche to ever actually work but the dream of a unified connector sure seems to be inching closer to reality.

Posts like this really make me appreciate just how small a world the Internet has created.
I've been hoping for the EXACT same thing as you since the first time I used my first smartphone (HTC/AT&T 3125). I said...man, this is gonna be great, I can use this to replace both my iPod AND my Game Boy. Every smartphone since, I've done that with, and inched closer to the reality of a unified device. However, there has always been the physical limitation of the screen.
Now, however, all of these phones (running Android, of course) are coming with HDMI-out, which (I would think) gives us an avenue to the larger screen. What I'm basically hoping to do is replace most of what my netbook does, with my next smartphone (EVO? Streak?), and do it on a larger display, when it is available.
In a perfect world, I would hook my device into the dock (so that I have HDMI-out, charging, and stereo speakers), and then use either a BlueTooth mouse/keyboard (not sure if the BlueTooth stack supports this type of communication), a USB mouse/keyboard (2-to-1 USB adapter into phone, hacked USB driver to facilitate input direction communication), and/or using the phone's display as an input method.
A lot of people look at me sort of oddly when I describe this but...whatever. I've seen at least a few other posts on XDA asking about display-output for the EVO via HDMI, so...I know we're not alone!
Would this maybe be better to post in the dev forum, to give developers an idea of what us non-dev-users are looking for?
^Bump. Any others have input? Will post a link over in the Dev forums to see if there is anyone else like minded...
Certainly you and I are on the same page at least.
Cyanogenmod has bluetooth hid working on the evo. I use my full size mouse and keyboard all the time but the screen is the only thing missing. They are pretty far along on being able to mirror the phone screen and I think scale it to 720p for hdtv output. If that's what you are looking for I assure you you are definitely not he only one.

Still no. It'd be better to perhaps PM a developer and ask.. Starting a thread like that would only get you flamed since you aren't contributing any hard evidence, a leak, port, or half baked project. Not downing it as a bad idea, just saving you some irate posts.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the mini HDMI on the evo supports 1.4 spec. Which means it cannot do internet connection over HDMI. I am going to bet it really doesn't meet 1.3 spec either. Like I said, I could be wrong.
Brainss....
Its Micro HDMI (not mini hdmi) which is HDMI 1.4 which is compatible with the mentioned above
evo + HDMI can do a lot

What about Rockplayer? I just ordered the HDMI cable so I haven't been able to mess with it. I would like to be able to stream video (jw player) and see on HDMI tv. Has anyone done this? Thx.
I've been wanting to try this forever. However I've upgraded to CM7 and they don't have the mouse pointer support, so I guess I'll have to wait to see if/when it's included. I want it, but not bad enough to downgrade to CM6. Back to rockin angry birds on the 50" Plasma.

My current setup is HDMI mirroring, Zimly, Flash plus Hulu, Gamer's and Desktop setups from my site, BT KB/Mouse and a BT gamepad. I also have a media server running Orb with two digital tuners tucked in a corner with 3TB of storage. Now that's everything you need and want, well except for Netflix. Oh yeh, and the semi perm. Evo CarPC with a BT volume control.

One of the most things that amazed me in Galaxy S II .Is the ability to output to HD/SD screens but today i've bought a 3.5m to RCA cable then plugged it in but there was no image and no option for TV-OUT !
So where is the TV-OUT exactly ?
Really, you did what?
I don't know how you could expect a video signal from an audio port. The thing you are looking for is the MHL Adapter (USB to HDMI) which isn't on the market right now (June most likely).

well actually the first sgs had tv-out from the 3.5mm port, as well as some nokia models, my dv cam has the same so its not impossible, but i find it strange that more people don't know that the sgs2 has the MHL adapter, see threads like this popping up all over
I'm surprised people are largely unaware of this too.
I really need the MHL cable, I used my Nokia 3.5mm TV Out cable a lot with my SGSI, really looking forward to being able to output HD content with the SGSII !!!
MHL was added, so tv out was removed.
photo editor was added, so adjustable saturation, sharpness, and brightness was removed.
video editor was added, so ability to pause while recording video was removed.
Thats the Wonder of Samsung~
Does anyone know if a non-samsung specific MHL cable would work with the SGS2, same as generic USB on the go cables work ok?
and yes, with the release of netflix today, and newly discovered "TV Shows Stream" app, i have to use my old sgs..
i wonder if software can fix this, or if hardware is missing.. someone should look into this
Its a standard, so yes, a non-Samsung one should work (only reservation for me is that GSMarena say that this one only works when a charging USB cable is connected to the adapter, so if a non-Samsung one didn't have a charging input it may not work).
MHL is just another way of saying HDMI-out !
I'm asking about the SD output that uses RCA connectors to plug into TVs.
Yep, I know what you're asking, it doesn't work (several of us have tried).
your one of those many people who don't really know what they are buying when they buy it, always a mistake. You need to do your homework before you waste any more money my friend.
Its all about the MHL port dude....

thats not true at all.. there were no reviews of this phone before it came out, and thats like saying 'oh you expected mp3 support?' yes ofc we did, isn't it a given?

In any case they are mistaken, because myself and several others have confirmed this is NOT working with the SGSII.

There has been plenty of info floating around about this phone prior to release and on release day, if I and plenty of other people new about this and you didnt then as I said before you didnt do your homework
the MHL port will work with all tv's with HDMI ports, however it will only charge your phone via this port with new TV's with MHL compatible ports.

Join the 21st century and buy one that has?
seriouslly hdmi has been out for years and it is the norm on all TV's. That would be like having an argument about scart if your TVis 20 odd years old?
Does anyone know of a working solution for a USB to RCA output on the atrix? I have AV inputs in my car and want to, mirror my phone onto my nav screen. Did a sear h and didn't find anything. DINC has a custom cable for this from HTC. THANKS!
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
You'd most likely need a digital to analog converter (like those boxes), and you'd need a bunch more since I doubt it has any video out besides the HDMI. Which doesn't do any sort of mirroring without hacks (unless I am not aware?)
That said, I don't think it is possible.
That's pretty much the answer all my searching has led me too as well. Samsung , HTC, and apple all support video out through USB or even audio jack.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Atrix has an hdmi port so there would be no need for video over usb. Analog audio can be transferred over, however.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is
Ok so in my room I have one of the older Hitachi plasma tv's that was made before they started putting HDMI in as standard. Still in great working condition so I really see no need to upgrade it for now. Now my question is.. it does have these OTHER ports that look kinda like HDMI ports but I know they arent. Anyone know of like some sort of special cable or adapter I could use to go HDMI direct from the phone to the tv?
You can get something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/GefenTV-HDMI-to-Composite-Scaler/dp/B0013LTNF8
Obviously this is a pretty expensive option. I did a 10 second Google search and found this. I'm sure there are cheaper methods.
If it's an HDTV, then it either has a DVI input or component inputs. If your TV had DVI, you can use something like this with the regular EVO HDMI cable:
http://cgi.ebay.com/DVI-D-HDMI-Adap...836?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b96e20fc
If your TV only has component inputs, then you need an actual converter box like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HDMI-5-RCA-Comp...024?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0d942cc0
What Cares posted is a scaler that actually converts an analog signal into digital. You already have a digital signal being sent from your phone via HDMI to a digital TV, so all you need is a converter/adapter.....you don't need upscaling.
Hope that helps..........
I need some pointers for a good ROM/kernel which supports TV out for this device.
I am aware of the various uPnp and transcoding apps over wifi which not all the time stream lossless quality. Please suggest me a tested ROM or point me to a thread which lists a good ROM with TV out capabilities for gingerbread 2.3.6.
Appreciate your help.

Yeah, that's the only bad part about this. If you don't have a tv that streams, you have to buy the adapter which ain't cheap.
That's about the only thing I liked on my G2X, that it had a hdmi port.

It can stream through my xbox or ps3 but you need a 3rd party app. I dont really care for DLNA its a great concept but its really choppy when trying to stream a movie from your phone..music and pictures are great tho...

Darkside was my last hope and it has not failed me. I have been using this ROM starting 2.2a version. TV out definitely works.
Im using the Mx Video player which has capabilities to show subtitles out of the mkvs (most other players dont) which are not attached to the video. Both of these are a good combination. Do you guys know any other better player?
The audio however is a bit downscaled and the 720p is a bit pixelish. (you can see the bigger pixels if you get closer). Both stock player and mxvideo player did this. so im thinking it could be a phone limitation.
Still Darkside was the only ROM I saw for now which has been running stable for TV Outs..
And btw, Darkside just released Darkside 2.4 .http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473077
