Hello guys. Is there a method to check a phone's original branding? I got my Desire here in Hungary but the ROM that was originally installed didn't have Hungarian language, only German and English so I suspect it is some grey import from Germany or I don't know.
I've rooted it, now i want to unroot it for warranty reasons, but can't install the stock WWE ROM because of customer ID error. This means it's not unbranded (or at least not WWE), but i bought it unbranded. So can I check somehow the phone's original branding? (from IMEI, S/N or I don't know)
The number next to the camera is HTW-EU-xxxxxx so I think it's definetly european.
Have you tried to flash the WWE rom with a Goldcard?
If not, do a search and create a goldcard and try reflashing the rom.

Thanks, that's a good idea. But it would be good if I can prove somehow that the phone was branded or not an original WWE for the shop where I bought it. Or it's too late now to check what was the original branding?
Im not too sure about that.
You may have to get in touch with HTC with the details.

He says he needs to unroot, though, so there is no need to try to flash a WWE ROM with goldcard.
As far as I am aware you cannot find out on which carrier you are branded.
The only idea that I can think of is to start flashing branded roms from shipped-roms and the one that doesn't give you a CID error is yours.
But the goldcard should eliminate any CID issues.
Flashing the WWE RUU will leave the phone unrooted....

Meanwhile in this thread I find an answer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831734&highlight=gold+card
Running fastboot oem gencheckpt gives the original Customer ID.
For me it's VODAP102 which is androidboot.carrier=VODA-Germany.
Great, got a branded HTC as an unbranded, time to go in the shop and have a nice chat with them.
Anyone knows if there is a stock RUU available for a german VODA branded phone?
Yes, it will be unrooted but not on the stock original ROM, since he's branded obviously, I meant.

Unfortunately there isn't one at shipped roms, only a french eclair and 2 UK, one of which is froyo.
But if they sold it to you, as you said for unbranded you should talk to them about that.
Thanks for both of you, i'll try to flash the WWE ROM with a gold card. Not the original branded but better than a rooted ROM And I'll go in the shop and ask why I have a branded german phone...

I got my Desire from a regular shop, but i recently discovered it's branded (though simlock free). Usually branded phones are only distributed by the providers, that's why i assumed mine was unbranded since i got it separate without a subscription.
I already upgraded to Froyo and i'm now on version 2.10.161.2 and i'm wondering if it's possible to debrand my Desire with a goldcard to stock ROM RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe and after that upgrade to generic Froyo through OTA.
Also when you have debranded your Desire do you have to use the goldcard everytime there is a new OTA available?
I don't think you'll be able to debrand using that RUU, it'll refuse to install because it has a lower HBOOT version than the one installed on your phone. You could try using a Froyo RUU to debrand, e.g. RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
I think that you do have to use the goldcard for every OTA update after debranding, but I'm not sure.
You can use my downgrade tool to debrand (which installs 1.21.405.2), or the latest froyo RUU.
And yes, goldcard is essential for all official updates on a phone that was originally branded.
Ok i have HBOOT-0.93.0001 don't know if that works when i try it with RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.0 0.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe?
It really blows though that you have to use the goldcard for each official update.
I'm now thinking of returning my Desire and demanding an unbranded one.
My Desire is also branded (which i didn't know when i was buying it) and after complaining to the seller he replied: why what's the difference? Works with any sim! Well, there is a huge difference for many well known reasons (ie branded software have logos here and there, OTA updates delay, after debranding needs goldcard etc). That's why branded phones are being sold cheaper on ebay.
Yes i would expect that happening on Ebay, but not in retail stores and not even cheaper but full price. Since in retail stores HTC is the one delivering those devices to the retail stores, so HTC is deliberately selling branded phones (they first made them simlock free though before shipping them)
So if i would have Orange as provider with my Vodafone branded Desire and Vodafone decides to put in their 360 crap again i would have that Vodafone crap on my Desire even though i don't have Vodafone as my provider.
HTC doesn't sell branded phones to be sold unbranded. If you buy a genuine sim free unlocked phone and not from a network, it will be unbranded.
Same story with me , and i successfully debrand 3 uk to generic , use gold card and search thread in rom section for downgrade tool which support new and old desire ..
Then ota upgrade to generic froyo

Sadly this is not true.. they do sell branded phones as unbranded. I bought mine genuine sim free unlocked and not from a network and it IS branded..
@newstar
Are you confirming that you need to use that goldcard with every OTA update after you debranded your Desire? Or are you saying that you only need to use it one time to debrand?
How would HTC know it was originally branded when receiving a new OTA update (by chance through IMEI or S/N)?

You need to use the goldcard with every OTA update or else you are going to have random restarts, not working wifi and sd card slot.
So the OP knows, you have a Vodafone Desire, the x.xx.161.x denotes a Vodafone product code...If you use a gold card and the 2.10.405.2 RUU it will update to the same ROM (Vodafone removed all branding from it) but you'll be on the generic product code
You'd still need your gold card for all future updates as well, mind
The only thing i still don't get is why would you need the gold card for future updates when you're on the generic product code. You would think it's then the same as the ones that were originally unbranded.
Because the phones CID will still be the branded one, so the gold card is still needed to trick the updates
Ah ok and i guess you can't change the CID so that it is exactly like an unbranded Desire.
Hello people.
An android newbie here. I have beem doing quite a bit of reading on this forum, but this is my first time posting. I have looked around all over the place and I have reached a point where I am confused of how to go about the task I am wanting to accomplish. Here goes:
I bought a desire HD on vodafone last week, it had 1.75.161.2 firmware on it. I stumbled across these forums and decided to flash a custom ROM (Leedroid). I was successful a this task, but now i have a charging problem with my phone. If i understand correctly, my warranty is void with a custom ROM, so I would like to know how i could get back to my stock Vodafone ROM (1.75.161.2), also with the branded vodafone logo that used to appear before i flashed to custom ROM.
Again, sorry if there is stuff about this posted elsewhere, I have been reading, but i am really confused.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
You have to run a RUU if you want to return to stock.
I don't have any links to official RUUs atm, but check the threads in the android developement section. There should be one with vodafone branding

I have installed a Vodafone branded RUU, I have also found a Vodafone backup which I have tried. I get the branding back, but I cannot get any updates OTA. I'm now on 1.39.161.1. There clearly is a 1.75 update on Vodafone, I used to be on it and my friends are on it.
Any help for me to receive these OTA updates?
Regards
I think 1.75 was pulled by HTC at the same time as the 1.72 update, due to some major bugs.

Vodafone website states 1.75 is the latest. Last week I had 1.75 I don't think 1.75 was pulled. 1.72 was definitely pulled.

Anothe DHD noob question here. I bought a DHD off eBay and I know it is locked to Vodafone, but I'm not sure if it's branded. If I don't get the Vodafone logo when I switch it on does that mean it's not branded?
Check the firmwareversion. If it's like 1.32.405.3 it's unbranded. The important part is .405. That means that it's unbranded.

It's 1.72.405.3
So it's unbranded but I need to downgrade in order to root and S-OFF etc?
Yes, you need to downgrade it to 1.32. But you don't need to create a gold card

Hi, I've the same problem, I need to get back to voda 1.75
First of all, did you used hboot S-OFF or radio S-OFF ?? Because if you used hboot you won't be able to recover the original boot to S-ON and your phone will be out of warranty regardless of the ROM it has installed.
As I understand it, if you've flashed the 1.39 branded RUU back to the phone that should've give you the stock vodafone recovery wich is what is needed in order to get Voda Branded OTA updates, am I right?
So I don't get why aren't you receiving the 1.75 OTA, do you have superCID?
Anyone knows if there is a 1.75 Voda RUU available somewhere to flash manually?

Hi.
Looks like we're stuck in the same boat! I have reflashed the original radio and the original hboot. Also put my cid to stock (VODAP001), and turned radio s-on. Reflashed clockworkmod recovery to original stock recovery, got the phone back to 100% the way it was when I took it out of the box, yet still I cannot get the OTA update to 1.75.161.2
I'm on 1.39.161.1, stock Vodafone UK firmware. I followed a guide off another forum (german forum) nd thanks to Google translator I managed to follow the steps. But still stuck at the OTA issue.
yep, so it seems.
Could you post the link to that thread on the german forum?
Thanks

Hi guys,
Sorry to dig this one up but I've hit a bit of a snag with my phone and could do with some assistance.
I got the phone originally with a Vodafone ROM and decided to debrand it to a plain HTC ROM - 1.72 using a de-brand pack I got from Fonefunshop. It appears that based on the fact the phone still has a Vodafone serial number but a HTC ROM I cannot receive OTA updates (I want Gingerbread ) then I need to revert back to stock. Ironically Vodafone released 2.3 earlier than HTC which was annoying to say the least.
I've been hunting round for the stock Vodafone RUU for 1.36 but I don't know if I can downgrade for starters, nor can I find any Vodafone RUU files anywhere including on here nor on Stock-ROM's.
Can anyone give me some help with this?
When I bought my phone from Vodafone on contract in November it came unbranded and unlocked. Nothing to do with Vodafone at all, apart from the CID. So if you just flash back to the stock 1.32 ROM and change the CID to the Vodafone one which I think is VODA_0001 (Dont quote me on that, its off the top of my head but there is a thread here somewhere that has it in), then make your phone S-on to get the updates.
That way you will be completely stock.
I'm in the same boat too
Flashed the non-branded software when I got the phone last year. Now I can't get the OTA update to 2.3.
Does anyone have a link the the stock 1.32 ROM and also a guide on how to change the CID and to make the phone S-on to get the updates?
Thanks
Lee

Please can you tell me where you found the Vodafone branded RUU. I really need it and haven't been able to find it anywhere. Thanks
Need to send my phone back as the screen is cracked and I get a replacement.
However I'm unsure what RUU to get. I got the phone off vodafone. However there is no branding on the phone and when I startup there is no vodafone logo. So while I think the phone is unbranded, the only RUU i can find that matches my baseband and software version is a vodafone one.
Should I jsut try to use the vodafone RUU and does it require a gold card?
You had a vodafone rom before you rooted it? Then you have to install the Vodafone ruu (from your country).

That is not necessarily true. Check here: http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo.
If it's not there flash a generic one. Mine was network locked but not branded.
Just a quick question before you go to all the trouble..
Most carriers will not provide a warranty replacement for phones with physical damage like cracked screen.. might wana check that first

Hi everyone,
I'm going to send my Desire HD to HTC to repair it.
I got a few question though:
I guess I need to flash device with their original rom and turn on the ENG and Radio, right?
Also the CID I probably need to restore it back.
My phone was originally branded with German Vodaphone, but I imported to Belgium.
Can I just flash WWE ROM and change the CID to the unbranded HTC Desire HD or do you recommend to change the CID to German Vodaphone and restore it with the original German Vodaphone rom with their bloatware?
I hope someone can help me
I'd suggest just returning to a WWE RUU. I'm guessing by checking your IMEI HTC can tell what your firmware was before.
I sent mine back with MIUI on it and they "repaired it" and flashed it back to 1.32 WWE.
Yes from what I heard HTC can check via IMEI what your FW should be.

My Desire HD overheated last night while charging.. I left my phone under my pillow when the alarm rang...and the alarm was ringing for a few hours(a few alarms) ....and when i woke up, my DHD was very hot...and then i quickly tried to cool it....i later tried to check whether everything was working and found out that everything except my phone ear piece isnt working(the thing which you listen to people talking during a call) i tried flashing a different rom, and it is still the same..
So now i want to return it to stock to send for warranty. I have a question how do i return to stock? I bought my phone without contract from an authorized distributor is Malaysia, Asia. As far as i learn from reading, there are a few stock RUU. I have the WWE RUU 1.32, but there is also an asian one..so which one do i need to get back to stock?
From one of the threads,
HTC WWE Stock RUUs - (World Wide English), for stock devices. These are RUUs to completely flash the device from the PC.

Honestly, just get back to stock rom and perhaps unroot it will do. HTC workers in Malaysia arent that clever to check yr phone is S off or nt. they jz check the existance of superuser apps only

Ok, thanks. Argh, stock rom, as in the WWE RUU? Or do i need to go find the asian one? thats the thing actually bothers me.. Alright thanks alot...my phone decided to kill itself today. Gosh.
So
1. Return to stock ROM
2. Unroot
3. S-ON
That would do right?
Thanks Loads
Here is an extremely detailed guide by Yoshi_523 showing how to restore one's Desire HD back to Stock for warranty purposes. It's for Vodafone Australia but I figure you could do the same with your specific RUU. I wouldn't be too sure about the WWE RUU - if you got your phone unbranded then I guess go with the WWE RUU. Otherwise you might need a more specific branded one.
