Seems there is a specific 3.70 update for hw 002. http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-update-continues-new-file-other-hardware-models#comments I wonder what the differences are?
I'm curious as well... does anybody have the build numbers for the different versions? I have hw 0003 and already used one of the available roms to update since I'm rooted. Want to know if I got the 'wrong' rom if it's worth going through the process of installing the 'right' one.
I have 0002, where did have get great update rom from?

If you read the link it clearly is out.
IF it were actually a different rom, don't you think it would NOT have been 3.70.651.1 like they did the change for the 004's???? All they say for sure is it has a different file name. Unless someone compares the files, I wouldn't put any money on it being "different"
May be a different update process but the firmware should be the same. I highly doubt HTC is going to release two different version that have the exact same version number.

This.
Just because you got it later than the newer evos doesn't mean it's for the older hardware versions.
It just means the sprint service in your area was slow to push the update to you, its customer, for that region.
I find that alot of times androidcentral can actually jack up information just as bad as the rumors that are out there.
The author even said they had a hw002 evo and "finally" got the new ota. It doesn't mean squat about it being specific to that hardware. It just means the author is one of the many customers who are in a region that gets otas slower than others.
I downloaded that file and ripped it apart in dsixdas kitchen and it even has the same kernel as the supposed "hw004 3.70".
Bottom line is if it was really hardware specific it would at least have a different kernel version.
I flashed the 3.7 rom on this forum on my version 002 and no problems that I can see so far

Sorry, but you are wrong. Bad info.
There are two different versions, but both update you to the same end result. They are different because they are updating from different software revisions. If you bother to look at the contents of the two updates, you would see that they are indeed different.
The two OTA updates are:
OTA_Supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.29.651.5_releasezq9ss6wyobuo26b5.zip
OTA_Supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.30.651.3_releasekobxwrvtv9q86pp0.zip

I stand corrected and Im not afraid to admit I was wrong. Like you said the end result is the same so it really doesnt make sense to push two different otas just to get to the same end.
In any case people here are going to get what they want on their device anyways regardless of hardware/version compatibilities.

It doesn't work like that. You can't really make roms directly from OTA updates. Since the RUU was released, all chefs will be working from that. In case you don't know, an OTA ("Over The Air" update) is really just a patch for a current rom, and only contains the updated files -- which is why you can't update OTA from a rom like CM6.X. What's referred to as an "RUU" (which really means rom update utility), contains the full rom with ALL the files -- NOT just the updated files.
If chefs didn't have the ruu, then there may be some concern as to which update was used. Basically to make a full rom from an OTA, you have to flash the OTA which updates your current rom, and then do a nandroid backup of the newly updated rom on your device, and then dump it and rebuild in the kitchen. But, like I say since we have the RUU (thanks to 911sniper, I think), all roms will be based on that.
This is finally the end of having to worry about which rom for which HW version. As I see it, the biggest issue is going to be people not wanting to update their radio, pri, and hboot versions for whatever reason, and causing issues with the latest software as a result.

Unless you are a developer and need the bootloader (hboot) version which supports fastboot commands via adb, I would personally update all radio, pri, nv, hboot, kernel, rom etc.. IF you have Unrevoked Forever installed.

I would agree with this with the exception of the hboot.
Fastboot commands can come in handy to do things that can't be done any other way. Like say you break your 4G, with the only public solutions out there you'll need fastboot to fix it
indagroove, do you know if there are any specific benefits an updated hboot provides?

I have been happily flashing ROM's, creating a Goldcard for a couple of weeks since getting my Hero and have just done a Radio update. I just realised I have no idea what the Radio update actually does.
Could someone explain in fairly simple terms what it is all about, I guess I have cat blood and curiosity has got the better of me
Sure. The radio update flashes the software on the little 'chip' that deals with mobile network/GPS/WiFI/Bluetooth etc. (basically all communications).
The update changes the software to a newer version, which can give better signal and battery life (It's a bit like flashing a normal ROM, except it's only for the communications hardware or baseband as iPhone users call it).
For more info, see http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-update-zip-format-for-gsm-hero/#entry1059164 which also gives you a list of them
Thanks for the prompt reply and simple terms. I am almost getting to the stage where I am qualified to make a phone call
Ah, great, I was wondering about this too. Is there any difference which radio rom you flash apart from GSM/CDMA? (My Hero has a suspicious "EU" in it which the roms I've seen online have not. Might just be some versioning, but then again it might be "europe"...)
How do you update your radio? Do you have to wipe?
EU doesnt mean europe, it is a way of identifying the radio version, like there is JU, JH, etc.
I found this out from other sources in the mean while (and forgot about this thread; it's been a couple of weeks after all), but thanks for replying anyway, it'll surely help the next guy wondering.

In the link posted a few posts up, you'll find the radio updates in the update.zip format needed to update via recovery mode, like any other custom ROM flash to your phone. However, Radio updates are typically included in the official RUU updates as well, but those will obviously unroot your phone.
Aside from increasing battery life/signal strength, radio updates can bring bugfixes and features. Newer OS ROMs typically work best with the latest Radio ROMs. After I rooted, I had an "EU" radio on my Telus Hero, and I couldn't make long distance calls unless the phone number had a "+" in front of it in my contact list. Updating the radio fixed that. Hope this info helps.
yeah it helped
But i dont understand the order of updating. First i transfer the update of the ROM to the phone and call it update.zip and the flash that ROM. But then i have to boot up the phone, to transfer the new radio and boot that.
Can it be true that i have to boot the phone and then tranfer the new radio, and the go into bootloader and flash the new update.zip?

OK. Well, the file doesn't *have* to be called update.zip. The recovery image has an option to choose a zip file, which makes things much much easier, as you can flash several files without rebooting, although I believe you have to reboot as part of the radio flash process. With this in mind, I would flash the OS update first, then the radio update. However, it really doesn't matter what order you flash them in. While the OS and radio rely on each other for the phone to operate properly, they are completely separate and individual from a flashing standpoint. They both get flashed in the exact same way from the recovery image, however with the radio, rebooting the phone is a necessary part of the process. If you were (for some dumb reason) to flash the radio and then remove the battery before the phone had completely rebooted, you'd end up with a broken (and possibly bricked) phone.
I wouldn't flash a radio without having an os installed, so if you have wiped then flash an os first. Just to make sure everything goes smooth.
A new radio file won't install until you do the first boot after installing which from memory is forced on you, so you will want to have a rom installed.
Thanks for the information about radio, quite useful. I have tried several ROMs lately but haven´t touched the radio yet. I guess if update to more recent one can improve battery and signal as it has been mentioned before.
I will try and see how my Hero behaves

from what i've read around these forums most people are downgrading their radio's because the latest one don't work with 4g....and after downgrading to 1.36 it has worked for them. so try flashing all the different radios and see which one works for you

The most recent radio is 2.05.00.06.10. The most recent WiMAX (Sprint's 4G) is 25641_R01.
You can get them from this thread.
Flash them just like you do a ROM. Drop the zip file on your sdcard, install using recovery. Your phone might reboot a couple of times during the process.
No, don't do that. You need to use whatever radio the ROM you're using calls for. You can not just blindly install a new radio on a ROM that wasn't designed for it.
If you are stock, the OTA updates will bring you the newest radios. If you are not stock, you need to use the radio specified by your ROM.

Some of the ROMs listed on the site will tell you which you need. Some won't and let you guess which is right through trial and error. At any rate, they're all available there.
I'm not contesting your link. I'm contesting your suggestion of blindly dumping radios into a ROM that may or may not work.

What's to contest, other than being a jerk? You might as well say "don't blindly dump ROMs on your phone, you might break it." These aren't like the baseband on the iPhone where it's a pain in the butt to go back to an earlier version.
I did. I'm sorry I suggested he do it the right way the first time rather than shooting in the dark and seeing what noise you hear down range.

You shouldn't mind 'guiding' the newer folks to the right source. There are hundreds of dead ends in these forums. Many of which are bookended by peeps such as yourself saying 'search this or that'. Truth be told, there is little organization here. Sure, if you're a troll you know where to go; but there is no concise guide formulated yet.
So, sieze this opportunity to help those who are honestly trying to find the information. You can hang around and slay those who are demanding without justification. Hell, I'll join you in slamming them.

You don't need the 2.15 radio to use CM6RC3. I'm using the 2.05 radio just fine.
i thought the 2.15 was much better then 2.05...
From what I read it's a hit or miss. Some people take longer to charge battery, or some slower/faster speeds on 3g. I would stick with the 2.05 radio.

Correct, you'll get a brick.
I mean... if you name it correctly, HBOOT will find the file and ask you if you want to upgrade your radio and recovery... this should be easy. Plus, it flashes recovery, so you probably don't want to be IN recovery whilst flashing recovery.
Maybe we need to redo the wiki entry; right now it looks like something from Wikipedia, when what it should have are the instructions for flashing radios (complete with warnings), flashing ROMs, battery stats reset directions, etc. Then new-comers wouldn't have to wade through these threads that are becoming bloated with the same questions and answers.

As an Incredible owner, and a budding annoying noob, I would welcome the ability to find this information in the wiki. I've spent several hours over the last two days scouring threads and the wiki and am still pretty confused.
I made what I now think was a mistake in applying Unrevoked Forever. My end goal was to get Skyraider Vanilla going on my Dinc, and I've just been feeling my way through the process. I've hacked other stuff before and thought I could find my way through with the help of awesome, helpful folks like yourselves, but I'm currently feeling like I'm in over my head.
My sense is that I need to flash my radio from the stock 1.00.03.04.06 to the 2.15 and then load Skyraider Vanilla ... but the Unrevoked folks are clear to say that when you have Forever you should flash all partitions simultaneously, so now I'm worried about what flashing the radio to 2.15 might do before I load Skyraider. And, I have read all the info. on flashing radios and taken it to heart - I am sufficiently afraid of bricking my phone.
But now that I have Forever I'm worried about what happens when the official 2.2 update comes out. I haven't found any instructions that make it clear enough to me how to handle that.
I don't expect anyone to clean up the mess I made, but I would certainly be grateful for some more noob-oriented details in the wiki. I'd also be happy to help with that effort, if there was anything I could do.
Thanks for all the great, free and often thankless work you do to keep technology open.

You can flash a radio pretty safely w/o worrying about bricking AS LONG AS YOU DON'T FLASH THE SAME EXACT RADIO TWICE IN A ROW (like if it failed the first time or something. MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR RADIO VERSION IN HBOOT BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING). If you don't upgrade your hboot (stay on 77) you'll be fine with the new radio. Don't make a practice of flashing radio's though as it's not very safe to do it all the time. I would recommend that if you have hboot 77, upgrade the radio to either 2.05 or 2.15 using the file attached in this thread, or directly from adrenylines site. To be 100% sure, I'd compare md5sum's to be sure before flashing it. Then flash SkyRaider. Make sure to do a wipe before doing so. I'm running 77, 2.15x, and CM6 RC3 w/o problems and love it. I'm a fan of CM6 hardcore, so SkyRaider is pretty much the best sense unless you use adrenylines Second Wave.... PM me if you have any q's. I'll help you out.

My main concern with any ROM is Exchange ActiveSync, as I need that for work. There aren't many comments from folks about this at all, so I guess I'll just need to give it a go and find out for myself.

HTC pays for Exchange licensing I believe, so the BEST integration is going to be with a sense Rom. I believe that CM6 does have some Exchange "add-in's" to make it run better, but sense will have better exchange then plain vanilla (remember, except CM6). <- you can always check their change log. I know it has something in it for Exchange that you can take and investigate further.
Wait for official release of new radio?
One quick question. I just ready yet another page (can't post the link, since I'm a noob) explaining the possibility that the supposedly-coming-soon official update could include a new version of the radio that won't play nice with the leaked version. Specifically, it said, "Some figure there is a 50/50 chance that applying the leak, and then applying the final OTA update will brick your phone – making it completely useless."
Any thoughts on the probability of that being the case. I don't want to be yet another person asking "should I go for it," but I am curious what the smart ones around here think about the probability of the official update causing problems if you flashed the leaked radio.

Well, first, please provide me the post, you can type hxxt:// instead so you can post it here.
The "official" OTA is supposed to be coming August 18th (take that with a grain of salt) so not much more wait. If what you read is true, then I would imagine that it's a simple downgrade of whatever your current radio is to stock 1.xx and Hboot will be 77 or 79 whichever you have (b/c both were shipped originally with phone, they're not leaks) which we CAN do, then upgrade to official radio from stock. I can't see how that would brick anything since that's basically what would happen on a stock phone. IF YOU'RE CAREFUL, you can do just about anything you want to your phone, then they return it to stock (aside from S-OFF at this time)....
Edit:
Also, if you want to get into the Android Scene, here are some great Blogs which you might wanna start looking at every now and then. Lots of good news and leaks unlike Engadget who are constantly sucking on Jobs tit:

Thanks,
Well, I can tell I'll be thanking you quite a bit, dreamersipaq.
I tried a few variations on posting the link, but I had to get creative for it to be allowed;

I've been subscribed to Androinica since the spring and I like it a lot. I'll check out the other recommended links.
I'm thinking I'll just keep my finger on the official update pulse this week and see if anything happens on or near the 18th.
THANK YOU!

No Worries! I might recommend that if the update comes out on the 18th you just use that for a while. You can still root it, put new kernels on it (that I'm sure someone will put out), erase / install apps, etc... and that should carry you over nicely until you've read up on things and are ready to jump into this head first.
Like I said, whenever you're ready, pm me if you have q's I'll do my best to answer them. I'll read the post you mentioned and If I find anything worth writing home about I'll update this thread.
Good Luck.... and don't feel bad. I use this as my primary device too, so I usually err on the side of caution as well. A quick suggestion, sometimes it's easier to search what you're looking for on google then XDA directly. You can google something like XDA Incredible radio 2.15 upgrade and I've gotten more accurate results with goog then XDA... i weird but sometimes works better, sometimes works worse.....
Again, good luck!

Thanks for your concern... I do have Unrevoked forever flashed on my device, so how do I go about loading the new 2.15 Radio? I followed the last set of instructions I read and the flash didn't take, still have radio 2.05.00.06.11.
If this helps, this is what my "Software Information" Page within "About Phone" reads:

Baseband Version

Kernel Version
2.6.32.15-g5e1ad8b

With all that said, out of all the ROM's I've tried so far I like SkyRaider the best. I know the 2.5 Rom took, but I don't think the 2.5.2 version took to my phone. I also want to upgrade the Radio and add the latest version of Flash. The last few flashes I've done (2.5.2, radio, and Flash) haven't seemed to work. Unrevoked Forever has been the only thing that has actually flashed successfully.
What should I do?
Hi All,
Before I start, I want to apologize for the lengthy post.
I just got an EVO 5 days ago and am ready to root it. I’ve been reading these boards for a few weeks and I gotta say I’m overwhelmed. I’m coming from a Palm Pre, which I hacked the **** out of, but it was more simple on the Pre. There was one method for hacking it and one source (Preware) for getting everything from homebrew apps to themes. Trying to keep up with all the different posts about kernels, themes, roms, rooting methods, etc. makes me feel like I’m in over my head.
Here’s my Evo:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version: [email protected] #17
Build number: 3.30.651.3 CL272076 release-keys
Software number: 3.30.651.3
Hardware Version: 003
I don’t what my hboot is or where to find it, so I’m leery about using unrevoked.
So, I guess I’m asking for the best way to get started hacking my phone. I have a few other questions to fill in my background knowledge of this too.
What is the best way to root my phone?
Can I root and keep the stock rom?
If so, can I delete the bloatware that comes with the phone?
If so, can I still receive OTA updates?
What other roms are available that preserve full phone functionality (ie: 4g and full camera use, I know cyanogen-mod has issues with that)
What does nandroid do?
What does odexed/deodexed mean? (I think it has something to do with theming)
What do you guys do with all those Kernels I’ve been seeing posted?
I’ve already looked here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841330
And that help with some of the questions I have, but again, I’m completely overwhelmed.
Sorry for the epic post, I hope to get off on the right foot and become an active member of the community here.
Thanks for your help and patience,
Grey
Bump for noobness?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You've got the wrong software number for easy rooting dude. (some people have camera freakouts when doing the hard root for your software number as well) Instructions for your sotware number are somewhere on this site. (sorry, don't know where)
You can root and keep stock
You can delete bloatware from kept stock
I believe you can still receive OTA updates, but you won't want to as they could break root. Wait for people here to release a rooted version of the OTAs
I think most Sense-based ROMS preserve all functionality. I'm a fan of Myn's Warm which does.
nandroid performs a backup of your system image essentially
odexed/deodexed has to do with something or other that I forgot, but the differences are explained elsewhere on the site
Kernels ar eused for performance, overclocking and underclocking CPU
First, I'm not familiar with the new rooting methods (I got my Evo on launch day) so I can't be of much help there.

Pretty sure you'll need to know what hboot you have in order to root. To find out: Turn off your evo. Hold down the volume down key, and simultaneously hit the power button to turn the phone back on. You'll be presented with a white screen (you can release the volume key now) with various information, including your hboot version. When you're finished, pull your battery, put it back in, and power on your evo as normal.

Yes, but what's the fun in that? Custom roms provide additional functionality, performance, and themes that you can't get with the stock rom.

Yes. You can delete literally anything, no guarantee your phone will still work afterwards though.

No. OTA updates are disabled in custom roms. There's no need to, however. Updating would cause you to lose root. Instead, you can/will flash the updates (whether it be updates to the rom, kernel, radio, etc).

Basically there are two kinds of roms. The majority of them are based off of the stock HTC rom and include HTC Sense, and full functionality (since no underlying components are being altered). The other type is AOSP (Android Open Source Project) which are roms that are compiled directly from the source code of Android. It's much harder to develop an AOSP rom, but these roms can include many features unavailable to htc-based roms. Unfortunately, AOSP roms do not yet have support for 4G or HDMI, as these elements are closed-source and therefore can't just be copied over from an htc rom. The two main AOSP roms are CyanogenMod and MIUI.

Basically, think of a nandroid backup as a copy and paste of your phones internal memory. The rom, kernel, user data, etc are stored in nandroid backups. Generally you create these whenever you are going to do anything that may cause your phone not to boot properly. In such a case, you can restore your phone from a nandroid and it will work exactly the way it did when you made the backup.

All you really need to know is that a rom must be deodexed in order to be theme-able. In contrast, odexed roms perform somewhat better. I doubt you'll find an odexed rom, other than stock, as the small performance hit is worth the ability to customize it.

A kernel is essentially the underlying framework that connects the rom (operating system) to the phone's hardware. Various kernels and have different features, such as over/underclocking, over/undervolting, I/O scheduler's, cpu governers, etc. Flashing different kernels will change your phones performance, battery life, and stability.

Glad to help that's what we're here for.
Hey guys thanks for the replies. I'm probably going to try to root tonight after work (and after backing everything up).
Any leads on what to use to root my version number? (I'll try searching later, I can't whilst I'm at work)
I found my HBOOT, it's 2.02.0000.
Can I use that for anything?
Thanks again,

Ok, same phone, AT&T HTC M9, now S-Off, TWRP 3.0.2.0, 3.38.502.41 firmware. Tried ARHD 20.0, had no service, flashed boot.img, got service but lost wifi. Tried Viperone M9 4.3, same issue. ICE, same issue. If I have Wifi, I have no service. If I flash boot.img, I get service, but lose Wifi. I'm pulling my hair out right now, as I've searched high and low and I've been looking at my PC and M9 for about 14 hours now. Anyone have any insight?
Does the rom match your firmware version?
Edit: just read your other thread and replied.
The firmware versions are off so I wouldn't trust it. Htc's are crap when it comes to recovery so be careful.
I have stayed on 6.0 with root and s-off, without xposed for a very good reason!.
If I were you, as I said in your other thread, would be going back to stock at this point and hoping for the best that the damage isn't permanent.
Its too risky to mess with htc devices. They don't have an app like odin or one even half as good.
You have a beast of a phone as is. You don't need to beef it up any more than it is.

It's a bit of a long story as to why I decided to root. It's not damaged by any means, if I flash the ROM posted here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/at...ficial-att-3-38-502-12-rom-7-01-2016-t3409354), Wifi and data both work flawlessly, despite it having a different firmware number. The whole ROM is actually decent, but lacks all the customization I want, and for some reason, headphones only work on one side. I hoped this fix would be simple, as so many people seem to run custom ROMs and I'm just over here yelling at my inanimate object

None of the things manlavi did, so far, was risky. The phone didn't take any damage. All he did was flashing a rom that is incompatible with his firmware like many did before him. The only difference is that HTC seems to have changed some more parts of the firmware with the latest AT&T update so that not only the boot image is incompatible. But that only makes it harder to make the rom compatible. The phone doesn't get damaged in any kind.
If he had flashed a firmware that is incompatible with his phone that would be a whole different story. However, before he opened this thread his phone wasn't S-OFF so he wouldn't have been able to do so even if he wanted.

The headphones might be broken. Did you check whether they work correctly with a different device?
As already said in the other thread you could convert your phone to another GSM variant of the M9. You would need to change your CID and your MID and then you could flash a RUU with a different SKU. However, you need to be aware that you'll lose every AT&T specific tweaks and functions by doing so. Instructions for converting for example to the US dev edition of the M9 are linked in the readme thread.
Alternatively you could try xposed and the sense tool box on a rooted stock rom. This way you could enable many customisations without having to change your firmware. If you choose this option you should get back to the correct stock rom for your firmware by flashing the RUU I linked in your other thread.

I tested the headphones on another rom and my computer, they had no issues with that. I'm working on converting it to the dev edition. I've changed my CID, but I'm a little afraid that this write-up is a bit out of date, so I'm currently searching for the right RUU.

It's linked in my thread, as well. Directly behind the link to the newer version of the conversion guide. However, it doesn't matter whether you use that old 3.x RUU or a newer one. You just need to install some OTAs while being on stock rom, afterwards, if you choose to use the old one. Be aware that most of the custom roms aren't compatible, yet, with the new 4.x firmware. So only update until your device suggests you to install the 4.x OTA.

Currently downloading the 3.35.617.12 RUU and the HTC Fastboot as I don't have an SD smaller than 32GB. I don't know how I've read that entire Q&A a few times over and didn't see that, so thanks as always

You don't need an SD card with less than 32gb if you're on firmware 3.x (and that is what you currently are). With firmware 3.x and above HTC enabled the usage of exfat formatted SD cards for RUU flashing.
Used the SD method, my phone is now running developer edition. Speaking technically once again, I should be able to use ROMs and have them work now, I imagine. Wifi and cellular both work after flashing dev edition.j
