Hello!
I have a question regarding the connection to the internet through 3G and Wifi.
First, if I leave 3G on and I turn the screen off, I understand that the 3G connection is still alive, but how does my phone know that there is a new mail, or a message in WhatsApp? Does it check once in a while if there is something new, or it receives the information on demand?
I ask it because if the phone is always communicating, it means that I am always exposed to it's radiation. Is it safe to stay connected through 3G?
With wifi I'm not worried about the radiation, but I do want to understand if the phone is always communicating in order to know if there is something new.
Thanks in advance!
Whatsapp uses push.. mail could be to.. As for checking mails and new messages.. you can change the frequency at accounts & synchronisation (i believe it's called like this in english) in the settings menu. Although, I think your connection will always find something to be 'active' anyway.
What I always do, when I sleep is airplane mode.. atleast shuts off most of the radiation at night.. I'm sleeping very close to the phone. I could also turn it off, but that'd mean my alarm clock is gone to.. haha
When an application uses push, my phone is not checking for new messages, but it is informed that it has a new message from outside? Do I understand it correctly?
So, if everything would use push, there would be no problem in being connected, because then no data would be transfered unless it is really needed?

I've noticed that my phone seems to stay connected alot.
I do have active sync on with direct push but it's set to sync every 4 hours(i only use it for contacts/appointments)
I also have it set to check my bellsouth.net pop account hourly.
but even when it isnt syncing with the exchange server, or downloading my pop mail it tends to stay connected. I strongly believe that this is totally destroying my battery life.
Anybody else have problems like this and know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance
P.S. its a cingular 8525 with the windows mobile 6 rom from cingular.

What do you mean by always staying connected? ActiveSync? Connected to the internet? GPRS is always on? What?
You can disable the device by using Comm mgr, and tapping on the device icon.
The data connection stays active (ie 3g, edge, etc...)

If you're on a data plan, the device is supposed to remain connected. Is this not a good thing? Like I said before, you can always deactivate your device by prior instructions. Having an active and constant connection to the network should not drain your battery. What affects the battery is the device staying on at idle or active. I read somewhere that it's good to fully drain the battery at intervals to prolong the life of the battery.
Hi,
My 3g connection keeps connecting even when i turn it off, within a few minutes i check again and its turned itself back on again, how do i stop this? i use 3g but only when im not in a wifi area...any help appreciated cas it seems be having a drain on my battery cas i have wifi and 3g on at same time then.
There are several 'services' that you can run on your phone that will cause 3g to keep connecting.
What have you got running?
ive got my emails setup, ive got stocks, also weather, skype (but not always running)
ok, have you set any of these to update automatically?
Plus, have a look on the Settings tab then data services also if you has agps set to on, i think this will also cause it to connect.
emails are automatic, but is it possible to do it via wifi when thats active? instead of activating 3g
HI Guys,
After having moved from my HTC legend to an HTC trophy 7 and getting used to all the interesting little fiddly bits of WP7 I was finally happy (Im mainly talking about the windows live mail contact sync issue).
All contacts finally fixed after a some time sorting them all and adding the phone numbers etc.
Anyway long story short the does not seem to be a way to make the WIFI stay on when the phone sleeps meaning that my preciously short 3g data will be used (Vodafone skimping and giving us only 500mb).
Has any one come up with a way to force the WIFI to stay on ala android sleep policy?
Cheers guys!
Your 3g would only be used if you are constantly downloading emails. Everything is push on WP7 so there wont be apps pulling data other than email. I wouldn't worry about it. WP7 is not android.
If I disable 3G while sleeping on WiFi is there ever a chance WiFi won't wake up for the push/pull of email or am I worrying about nothing?
Keep it connected to a charger or your PC and the wifi will stay ON.
Thanks for the replies guys,
Hopefully data usage will be better than android but I would sill like to be able to turn wifi on all the time is I needed to. In the mean time all email set to as arrives so should cut down on usage a bit.
Lets see what this next update brings
cheers

As the other chap said, plug your phone into power and wifi will not turn off. I nall honesty, wanting the wifi to remain on while the phone is on battery power is a bit daft because it wouldn't last longer than a couple of hours.
Thanks again guys,
Granted leaving the wifi on all the time may drain the batt faster but my HTC legend managed like this with no issues as Android turns off 3g when WIFI is on saving some power. I think we should at least be able to change the WIFI sleep profile like android - 5m, 15m, never etc

I assume you mean that Android turns off 3g when Wifi is *CONNECTED*. I leave my Wifi switched on all the time and what happens is when the phone switches off, it disconnects, but the wifi setting remains *ON*.
Leaving it on is good because when I get home it connects to my Wifi network automatically but while out and about the phone doesn't keep trying to connect, which would drain the battery a lot.
So yeah, make the distinction between Wifi being "ON" and "CONNECTED".
For the last couple months when the screen goes off or i leave the phone for a while, gtalk will "loose connection to the server" and wont recive messages , sometimes the same goes for email.
i have all the settings to keep the connection on when screen goes off etc.
is their a solution for this
thanks
Maybe settings for your Wi-Fi or data connection?
Have you set your Wifi Policy to never sleep?
In Wifi Settings, press Menu and then advanced. Set it to never sleep, otherwise your wifi will disconnect when you put the phone into standby.
If it's not that, not sure what it could be.
yh i checked that setting, i tested on 3g now, it seems on 3g theirs no disconnects, so as its only wifi i can only imagine it may be my router etc, not a phone issue
I've read (and THINK I understand) what smart switch is supposed to do (going all the way back to the Note4.
And it seems like the complete opposite of what wifi calling does.
Anyone care to explain the difference or real reasons one is used over the other?
Also on a related note, in the developer options category there is an option to turn on "Aggressive Wi-Fi cell h.."
With the explanation "switch from wifi to mobile networks more quickly when wifi signal is weak"
Kind of self explanatory and my question would be real work use. If you have unlimited data, any reason you would NOT want to check this?
Unless this just sounds great, but doesn't work well......
Thoughts?

Smart switch imports the data from your old phone when you switch to a Samsung phone; WiFi calling routes voice traffic over WiFi when available.
Sorry, I meant to say Smart NETWORK Switch. It says your phone will be connected to a mobile network if Wifi becomes unstable.
And Wi-fi calling kinda of says the exact opposite. If mobile becomes unstable, it will switch to Wifi......
Anyone?
Many times.. even when the wifi signal is weak, as long as wifi is turned on, the phone will remain connected to it. This especially happens when you are just pulling out of your house and you are trying to get to google maps for directions or something.. but because the phone is still connected to your home wifi, it'll remain so and since the connection is weak, you won't be able to browse or anything and google maps may say "no network connection".
I believe what Smart Network Switch does, is that in such cases, it'll immediately switch to mobile data.

This happens to me every morning in my driveway trying to route Waze. I get a weak wifi signal that the phone hangs onto and I get a no network error from Waze.
