I do have unrevoked forever.
I was told that no matter what OTA I get I will still have my root, correct?
When I get gingerbread or any OTA will I lose it?
And if I lose it can I reroot my phone?

It was believed that your security or s-off would stay off forever when unrevoked forever was made... but after this last update some are claiming that the update turned it back to s-on... so i wouldnt do an update from sprint... usually in an hour or two someone on this site will release a rooted version of the update anyway so just be patient... If you lose root it could be rooted again but it may take time for them to find a way to root the update.... usually the manufacture or phone company will patch up the old way of rooting.. and it may just be that you will be un rooted forever
Yes you will loose root.
Yes you can re-root.
The source code for gingerbread comes out tomorrow so it should only be a matter of days before custom ROM's will have gingerbread integrated into it. Just be patient.

Not flaming, just asking...where did you hear that source will be released tomorrow?
To the OP:
As everyone else says, odds are that yes, you will lose root.

Post your sources. I'm seeing nothing in the XDA forums or any other major forums nor anything on the web. Just because some random person says in on the internet doesn't make it true.

Do you know how to use Google? It's a really useful tool. I don't care if you believe me or not, do your own research if you won't take my word for it. I already have.
Also most of the ROM thread's in the developer section have said they will begin integrating 2.3 into their ROM.

Your sarcasm isn't needed. I used the search function in XDA (which most seem to never use) and Google. No legit results, so again, I don't see where you are getting your information on this.
Yes, of course they will begin integrating 2.3 into their ROMs -whenever the code is released-. At the moment, they are going off of what they pull from the /system from the Nexus S, which most know is not the same as the source code.
The answer its always going too be yes

Not yet. I wish I knew more about how to find and expose exploits. I'm such a noob. I tried a bunch of old methods, but couldn't get any to quite work. I'm guessing that the Flash flaw should work, we just need to get a custom hack to exploit it in 2.2. I hope someone starts working on this soon. I did the update on purpose, but I wouldn't mind having root again. I can wait until then, just hope someone figures it out soon, because there will be a lot of people after the update looking to root, and I don't think that downgrading is going to be an option. I'm guessing most devs are waiting for the final release before they start hacking it.

I had my reasons. I really don't care about root right now. The only thing I want root for now is to fix my PRI to be back to official, but since that isn't even possible yet, I decided to just update to completely stock without root. I don't use root enough to outweigh the possible security risks. I used to use it for tethering, but since I found out that I can turn tethering on and off and just pay for it prorated, its worth it. I just would rather pay and have it legally than have it free. And since I can do so affordably, I decided to just forget about it all together. Anyways, I'm willing to test a root method when someone comes out with one.

True, each has his own opinion and reasons. The rooted Froyo are still not fully functional at this point anyhow, that is one more thing that stops me from upgrading to it. I bought a phone with an 8mp camera for a reason. (granted it's no DSLR)

Well if that's all we all did, we'd still be using phones that came with a cord and a briefcase.
Fella's, there is froyo 2.2 rooted fully functioning. camera works, as well as 4G. i have my phone on 2.2 fully rooted and let me tell you, its 1000% better than 2.1. there is actually someone who already started making their own custom roms, but he posted the only 50% of the people reported that wifi tethering was working, but if you do the "STOCK WITH ROOT" it all works.
here is the link, enjoy.

good man for showing initiative. i think they are looking for a way to root the 2.2 OTA update. Not for a 2.2 that has been rooted already. 2 different fish to fry
Any consequences other than losing root? I'm not too concerned about getting it right this second since I know these devs at xda will cook somethin nice up in a few days. Just want to know my options. THanks
EDIT: im running dc 3.2.3 (2.1)
It should just flash the new ROM. Yes, you'll lose root and it probably replaces the bootloader so you can't boot into recovery either, but it should be just another stock phone after that.
So I am rooted and go to load up the update and it puts me in the spot with the android guy and the /!\ what gives...

some of us dont care about loosing root, and as far as i knew i could at anytime upgrade to something sprint put out and all that would happen is i would loose root.
I'm pretty pissed...I thought that an OTA would override the unrEVOked 3 since it's not even full root. Now I gotta figure out what to do next. There is another thread here that describes a method to UNROOT. But I'm not sure if it works with UNREVOKED 3

This is my position aswell. Im sure i read pleanty of people saying unrevoked would have no effect on future updates, and the worst that would happen was loosing root.
eventually all the developers will migrate to froyo as a base so you can wait or you can unroot like me and install the OTA with no prob. When I installed the OTA it kinda installed like a regular app...did not go to bootloader or nothing like that. Then it just rebooted into froyo...did not lose anything such as installed apps or user data etc. It's all good eitherway you choose in my opinion. Keep root and wait...Unroot/OTA and wait...it will only be a short time like almost already and full froyo with root is a done deal...

I had the june update so i was 1.47 but either way this is the program to use...
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/19278-how-unroot-return-stock.html
This in my opinion is the way to go...make sure you use the 1.47 one and you are good to go...then get the OTA FROYO...I did it this way.
I had Unrevoked3 on mine for wifi tethering..and did the manual leaked update (update.zip on sd card etc) and it worked just peachy, if you wanted to go that route. I did lost my root but none of my data (even superusers is still installed lol)
From what I read there isnt much of a difference between the .3 and .6 versions anyway
Maybe if you did that, then waited to see what HTC comes up with for us "early adopters" to get us up to speed lol
even though i rooted through simple root and have nand unlocked, is it recommended to use unrevoked forever to keep nand unlocked?

I wouldn't since you are already good.
The only thing it does is protect you if you should allow an OTA update and if you want any recommendation, I'd advise not downloading any OTA's ever.
EDIT: At least that is my understanding of what it does.

it only protects you if an S-ON update is not included in that OTA update.
Someone in another thread mentioned they already have a patch for the S-OFF/ON to kill unrevoked forever.
there is a point to the program but seriously, all it takes is an update to kill it and i am not sure what the revoked team was thinking making claims that it would allow root for ever,,,, that was a pretty unsubstantiated claim since, again, all it takes is an update from HTC.
I think the bigger point is that you wont loose root/nand if you flash a bad rom or something.
but i think they made that statement with "never install an OTA update without researching it first" in mind.
now that is how I understand it.

Ahh, see I was under the impression, like probably most, that it was permanent. I wasn't aware that either this tool or HTC could change it back.
The patch for forever was mentioned but I don't think its actually confirmed. Either way, for root users here I don't see any reason to ever to an OTA.

I tryed it, when I first downgraded from 2.2 to 2.1 it asked if I wanted to update, so to see if unrevoked forever really work I downloaded the file and install it.after it was all done I went to bootloader to see is if the security was off and it was it said s-off then all I did is flash the custom recovery that was in the guide and it worked

Don't think it's possible with a new device. If your security level is set so s-off from being opreviously rooted then you can downgrade, but with a new phone already sporting 2.3 I don't think there's currently a root solution. Be patient is the only advice at this point.

HTC locked the bootloader that came with the OTA which means thats no bueno for us lol. Unless HTC sends out an update that unlocks the bootloader or devs find an exploit (loophole) it could take MONTHS to achieve root.
I would like to start with an apology,
I have been reading what I could for a couple weeks now and am just honestly confused.
I have a sprint evo 4g and would like to root it.
I have seen a few posts saying it can't be rooted because I took an update a few days ago and don't know if I blocked myself from root. Also I was wondering if I just reset to factory would it undo the block?
Again I'm sorry if this question has been previously answered.

I swear, I wanted to find if there was a STOCK ROOTED ROM, available to me, and all I could find after an hour was a listing of I think maybe 50 ROMS, and NONE of them stated it was a ROM that would unroot my phone, or if my phone would stay rooted after the flash. I still dont know. I gave up looking.
I purchased a launcher pro license also, but I'm finding that I like GO Launcher EX and most of the GO Dev team's apps better. It's far more customizable and bacon-y.

Crappy? I own both phones and the 3d is nice, it has a couple bugs that need to be addressed but the dual core makes it much faster and I'm getting about 13 to 16 hours battery life on a stock battery, I'm barely getting a little more than that on my extended battery in the EVO... Sidenote: the OTA gingerbread update made me switch phones, my og evo hasn't been the same since

Here is a stock rooted rom for when you get root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153 There are a lot of things to view in this forum but honestly it takes time to understand stuff. I did not learn to decipher new from old and right from speculation right away. You got to sip through the crap and especially before asking certain things. Hey better yet PM a person if you have a question and you think they may be able to answer you. The mods made changes in this forum as well as others a while ago to make developers post things in a certain manner to make it easier. I read this from one of the stickys... which I recommend everyone to read..
[ROM] 08/03/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.3.3 | 4.24.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One
[Kernel]Golden Monkey 1.1 (31-July-2011)

Yes, you are able to acheive root through flashing a pre-rooted rom but aside from that, no, you cannot get root just by re-rooting. S-off just means the security flags are off for your device meaning the boot loader doesn't discriminate files. As long as it's PC36IMG.zip you should be good to go. If you want an appropriate way to flash roms, I suggest looking at twrp. It's sexy as hell and I love the red rum theme for it.
It's the first themable recovery, and it looks great. Then you can look at getting cm7 or any other rom you want regardless if you want AOSP or Sense.

Thanks. I remember when I took OTA update and thought that I was screwed, but only to find I was S-off. There was a thread where I flashed amon ra recovery and was able to flash a custom rom (mikmik). I went back stock and have not messed around with my EVO (other phones and tablets Lol). Just been out the EVO loop lately and was not sure if flashing amon recovery was the preferred method still.
Going to take a look at the recovery you suggested and give it a go. I'm just so use to cwm. Even having amon was a different feel for me.
The dual core processor is probably the difference other than that is the same crap and I forgot to mention about the 3d camera its horrible!! Htc said you don't need glasses I just a video for a few seconds and got dissy it doesn't make any sense about the whole 3d deal. And also why would they lower the megapixel of the camera specially if your going to have a 3d phone? I think no body is able to use the 3d feature because of the quality
