The EVO carries some great specs and gets some good benchmark scores through various tests but I always felt that it seemed kind of clunky with just navigating through the OS. 2.2 has helped a bit but I still feel the same way.
I was recently supplied with the HTC Aria through the company I work for. Now I know this phone is a more entry level android set, but I am really blown away with how quick this thing feels. Benchmark scores aren't as high as the evo, but the phone just feels so much faster and more fluid through the OS.
I am not trying to start any sort of flame war. I came from the Nexus One and now have the Evo and Aria. Anyone else notice this?
EDIT: Also I did a camera and video comparison. The picture and video quality is just better on the Aria. Maybe it's just my Evo.

It's the Damn FPS LOCK! My parents have the incredible and that also feels sooo much smoother. Come on HTC give us a factory fix instead of leaving it to the Devs again! They will fix it! But they shouldn't have to!
P.S. we don't call the Android op sys OS 2.2 its not an iphoney....its froyo ....just messn with Ya I couldn't resist
Is that really what makes it feel that way? I didn't know.

100% absolutely.
Very much so yes.
I went from CM6 with a 53 FPS avg to test Fresh 3 with the stock HTC kernel with 29 FPS avg. Night and day difference navigating around the phone. It really is that bad. It's a shame HTC is stonewalling on the situation.
-NO fps lock
That's it... I'm running CM-1 with netarchy fix I think... anyway, it's NIGHT and DAY difference. Do yourself a favor and get a rom/kernel with a fix.
Mine benchmarks just fine now... infact, with Cm6 + Snap kernel, I benchmark a bit better than most snapdragon phones.
30.3 on neocore, HOLLA'.
Its not just the fps lock, it also has alot to do with the graphics accelerator. For one HTC didnt include the proper drivers for the graphics to run at full speed and not only that but it is not an indipendent G.A. it is "intergrated". In other words, if youve ever bought a new graphics card for your computer because most of us nerds know that most comps. bought out there have "intergrated" fx cards. They are built into the motherboard, therefor sucking more energy and resources from all the other parts of the computer. Its the same way with this phone, another thing is the HDMI output. Just like a computer if you want to have a nice vid card and also have a tv tuner or another output you would need to take up 2 slots, well you can only fit so many slots in a phone.
The FPS hack is not the answer lol. Ever heard of placebo.. not the band the effect. I am running CM6 and in linpack getting scores of 39.???. My phone is current and runs smooth. However when it comes to changing screens or anything like that its not any less or any more smoother then when it was set to 30fps. I will say this though games do play smoother and that is definitly noticiable.
These people claiming the FPS unlock makes there phone snappier lol what a joke seriously guys? Dont guess things, read up and learn something. Word of mouth isnt always the correct answer.

not just placebo. Like others have noticed there are Android phones that do not have the fps cap that do run smoother and are equal or less as far as processor and gpu specs go. I have been building pc gaming rigs for the last 8 or so years so I do know the difference not going by word of mouth and also agree with BALeR's post that its not just the fps cap. I didn't mention the gpu in my earlier post because I have used the incredible and it does run smoother loaded up, Not rooted than my evo was stock. Yes might be using different drivers also. The majority of the peeps who use the fps hack can't all be seeing placebo effects. There is some truth to the matter might not be huge but enough non the less for a noticeable difference. Not flaming or saying you are wrong, just defending what I posted.

I would have to disagree. When I first started using netarchy's kernel for my evo it felt like butter
If the FPS unlock is a placebo than so is Chemo for cancer patients.
lol. yeah SERIOUSLY. I've gone back and forth from stock to Netarchy a dozen times, and I can instantly tell which is which.
My girlfriend has an EVO as well. She wasn't convinced either, so we took both phones, stripped our Sense "Scenes" to "Clean Slate", removed battery covers (I have carbon fiber on the back of mine.) and I had to guess who's was whos.
All I had to do was swipe once or twice and I knew which phone was mine vs hers. we did that probably a dozen times and I got it every single time.
I wasn't going off of some blemish or marking that my phone had that hers didn't, it was solely based on a BLANK screen. (default background of course.) and swiping back and forth.
No, but you're right.. it's make believe, like Toothpaste and the female orgasm.

LOL,the nerve of some people..So its a Placebo that I and 100's of other people see a huge difference in the over all "snappyness" of the phone when using a fix?...You can't be serious...placebo,lol....Linpack and CM6 isn't all that's out their sir.Seems like you need some real world experiences with other roms and unlocking FPS before posting.
The Evo running at 30hz is awful, running at around 55hz on CM6 rom (used the T2 hack before), and it is WAY WAY WAY WAY better.
I lol at people who lost their root and can't do it... they can whine all they want

Exactly, it feels so much better. FYI. fps, not hz. two totally different things.
30hz would strain your eyes, possibly and REALLY be annoying.
God imagine that.. 30fpx lock AND 30hz. what a POS that would be.

I can't find actual specs for the screens refresh rate. (excluding the fps cap)
But, I believe the reason we feel so much lag is that the screen is capable of 60hz, which, all LCD screens are now a days. but the cap of 30fps is allowing the screen to refresh 2 times before another frame is drawn, giving us that feeling a lag.
again, this is just my thought on the whole thing as I can't find solid specs of the device, only a bunch of sites that say the 30 fps is a cap on the screens refresh rate. which, ...don't have to be the same thing.

Wholly inaccurate. Netarchy's kernel shows a dramatic improvement in touch response in addition to improved framerate when scrolling. It's not just a placebo and it's borderline irresponsible to say otherwise.
CyanogenMod wins agian!
I'm actually thinking about the Epic if it gets CM6 support...

Come back to us when you compare a Stock Nexus One or Incredible and a Stock Evo.
Again, scrolling between screens and apps... one can see a BIG difference.
The 30fps cap puts a TOUCH INPUT LAG. This makes it feel like the phone is lagging behind you. You swipe across the screen and the phone actually registers it around half a second after you.

Looks like someone's a pretty big hypocrite... Twilk, you need to do some reading and learning.
_______________
On top of that, I put the Cm6 Snap Kernel on top of the Cm6-RC1...
I get higher 3d benchmarks. For example...
-16.8 fps on Nenamark (formerly... 10'ish fps)
-30.3 fps on Neocore (formerly 25'ish)
-43 fps on GL Benchmark HD 1.1 (formerly 28'ish)
Install a Custom Rom, Netarchy's latest kernel and then Launcher Pro. You will notice a big difference
Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried the n64oid app on their EVO? And if so how well does it preform? I am wanting to know before I buy the app.
Thanks!

Runs fine for me.....
Runs fine for me, just a lil sound lag, but its expected.
Decent for me on LOZ:OOT. Bit laggy though.
Ive used it, but quite laggy on the game i was playing, Diddy Kong Racing. It will get better tho
I just downloaded it, and EVERY rom i've downloaded on the EVO for n64oid is Super laggy, unplayable. Anyone know why?
ive had the same problem on my evo, except for mario 64 and harvest moon 64, but otherwise all the other roms are so laggy i can barely play them, even though some of the same roms i've seen youtube videos of them running perfectly. same question as above; anybody know why?

is there the option of changing the framerate? the higher the frame rate, the smoother the game, but it takes a heavy toll on your battery, you'll be best to play while tethered to the wall via charger cable
I just bought this app as well. Downloaded Goldeneye, Mario, and Mario Kart. All games are extremely laggy. Mario kart is playable, but the on screen timer takes about 3 seconds for every second in real time. Goldeneye, which I was really looking forward to, wont even load past the pre-game animated video. Very disappointing.
I changed the frame rate in mario kart, it worked okay, but still really laggy. Goldeneye and NFL Blitz were terrible no matter what the framerate!! I thought EVOs were fast?!!! What's going on?

Our processors are fast, our GPUs are outdated though. All the cool people run Adreno 205, we're stuck at 200.
Plus, as someone noted, it'll get better. There's a lot of stuff for the developer to work out to make the programming as efficient as possible so we don't experience so much lag. If you recall, it took the guy who did SNESoid several months before he could even get Super Mario RPG to work, and even so there's still enhancements being made to make it more playable.
patience...or buy a phone with better hardware. your choice.
Its not our phone, the dev clearly states at the bottom that the app should be considered an Alpha as he has so many performance updates to push thru to get it working close to perfect on most high end phones. Just give it time.

Yes, the results posted here are actually typical of most phones right now. The Evo does have a slightly lower GPU, but that actually doesn't matter with these emulators. Someone explained that unless the emulator was using openGL, which it apparently isn't, it shouldn't matter. I don't know, I just read that.
I have tested it on two roms. Myns 2.2 RSL5, and UltimateDroid 2.5. Both with kernels that support overclocking. On the sense rom, I have to download setcpu and set it to performance. On UD, I can set it in the settings. I overclock to 1.19GHZ.
In the app I have found it doesn't really matter if sound is checked on or off. Turning up the frameskips seemed to help. My results so far are the following games play well:
Mario 64 (flawless)
Mario Kart 64 (just a little bit laggy, but very enjoyable)
Star Fox 64 (menus and videos are very choppy, but in game it's super smooth and definately worth the download)
If for nothing more than these 3 games, this was well worth $6. I would have gladly bought these for $2 each if there were available as standalones somewhere.
That being said, the developer is known for updating all the time. Star Fox is running much more smoothly now than it was when the app first was released, so already I have seen a compatibilty increase.
Expect to continue to see updates, and as they do, more games will be available.
Now, if ANYONE has some complaint about the $6 they paid, go complain somewhere else. We don't want to hear it.
Runs like bunk on the evo because of the adreno 200.
Just ran it on an epic and it works perfect with the almighty powervr. (although the rest of the phone sucks)
It has potential so I bought it. I just want to play Zelda and Mario Kart. I can't wait until the Dreamcast emulator comes out so I can play Shenmue.

if you install CM7 and over clock to 1.1ghz it runs a lot better.
I know the Evo is an older phone but it still hold it's own and is sometimes the standard in which a benchmark has been made. I ALSO know that the quadrant score is just a placebo and not really something you go by to define your phones abilities.
That being said, I noticed on the quad test in the video area I was getting single to LOW double digit frame-rates. I didn't try this with the stock but I get the same results on Warm and on CM7. I use the quad test just for my personal use and a small ruler just to see what might have changed from Rom to Rom. The CM7 Rom on nightly 30 is fantastic but the video score is pushing out a 1000 quad score BELOW the Evo 2.2 marker. It also did the same when I tried out 26(maybe 25) so I know this is phone related somehow.
I'm not worried about speeding up the phone because it's snappy, I was more curious as to what the deal is with the video processing. Is this standard or fixable?
As you already stated Quadrant is a bit of a placebo. The bigger problem is that it is highly inaccurate with Gingergread. CM7 will get around 1000 because of this alone. This is not because of the graphics. Flash back to CM6 and rerun it, I was hitting 1700s with early Savage kernel (pre-zen-merger), the graphics scores aren't much better: the planets maxes around 45-50fps but the others rarely crack 20.
Another interesting thing I found. Run it twice. 2nd will always be higher. Might be a true score. Not sure why this is. I'm on CM7 but I did this on other ROMs.
You'll get higher scores on anything but CM7, but honestly the scores don't measure your performance.
I agree they don't and again I am not saying "why are my scores low". I am actually watching the video test and seeing FPS 9-18. I could care less what the end result is, I'll put my phone up to anyones phone in the same ballpark and I know it will blow away or hold it's own.
Is there another standalone more accurate video test?
I am coming from a Vibrant which was sick and I don't expect the same picture but 9FPS is not good for any phone.
Hi there,
I have the latest stable Froyo build on my Rhodium(210) and I was wondering, why is Angry Birds so slow? It only runs at half speed. My first thought was that opengl is not working yet and android is just emulating a GPU but this isn't possible. 3D games work at almost full speed, so what is happening here? Why do I get a slower speed on something that shouldn't be using my GPU as much as something like Raging Thunder 2(runs at about 80% speed). Is this just bad coding? Or is angry birds java and raging thunder something a lot faster?
Aaron
Angry Birds requires OpenGL 2.0, which our phones only support 1.1.
Try searching next time, I've said this personally at least 100x.
There is a lite version some where here or ppcgeeks that worked much better. Most levels ran quite well, with only slow downs on levels with lots of stuff to smash. I finished the game on my TP2 actually.
Your going to have to search for it though...
Lol, nice, thanks man.
What games are working properly on s3? other games are having graphic problems.
If you are into first person shooters, Dead Trigger by Madfinger games is pretty sick. Gears & Guts by Glu Mobile is working. I have a bunch other games but the 2 listed above have a big file size and are pretty graphically intense. Smooth gameplay w/o any problems. I am also running Blazer 1.7 w/ Apex Launcher.

Have you tried amazing spiderman or Samurai II: Vengeance, having a graphics issues please let me know what could be a problem. I am using stock rom and the phone is not rooted.
Dead Trigger is insanely sick. It has amazing lighting visuals and is only about 150MB of storage. Been playing it non-stop. I also am a big fan of Asphalt games, however, the new 1$ asphalt game runs HORRIBLE on the S3. I am also hearing it runs horrible on other top end devices. The game has a major framerate issue.

sounds good, but i'd like to know why a game wants access to my phone calls/history..
i normally don't bother with free games or apps as their either invested with ads or want access to private data.
