Yes, this is the wrong section. The easiest way may not be the safest. Learn to use the ADB with the how to that's floating around, search for it. I recommend using rage to root. The rooting with rage topic should be in the forum as well again search for it. If you mess up copy and pasting a command using rage you'll be safe. Don't use visionary, I heard to many bad things about the app. On the flip side I've also heard many success stories of users that utilized visionary. Oh, visionary is the closest thing to one click root. Many people that fail with visionary end up soft bricking their phone and are unable to use rage afterward.

Get temp root using rage
Run "gfree" to enable permanent read/write (radio S-OFF)
Safest way to root is gfree, follow the link below.

I'm new to rooting, heard its what to do on g2s, but where do I start? I been looking around and doing research but I don't know where to start. I'm not a phone guru and need to be schooled. Where can I find the visionary temp root? It was taken off the android market.

Well first off, you shouldn't be rooting unless you know what your doing. This isn't like an iPod or iPhone. The slightless thing you do can possibly brick your phone.
www.google.com can help you find the visionary application... it will link you back to this forum. or you can go check the development thread.

Ill try to help you out. Click on the "Rooted and Booted" hyperlink in my signature below this. It will take you to my post where I have VISIONary r11 and instructions for root. BUT READ THE ENTIRE 1st POST OF THE THREAD FIRST!!!!!! Its the now famous "Perma Root" thread. Start with page one and make sure you see some of the wrong turns others went through. Ginuinely it's not hard at all to do. But be sure you miss no details to get it right trouble free.
I'm on At&T and just bought a T-Mobile G2 and am having a b!tch of a time getting this thing unlocked. I've used three cell unlocking websites and thus far none of them have been able to give me an unlock code saying that my imei is too new and not in any data base yet. So does anyone know of any awesome unlocking website that has current codes or am I screwed? Are there any other options to get this code?
BTW, yes I know I'll never be able to get 3G but I don't care, this phone is awesome and the DesireZ was too much money!!

Ignore both of those links. The CORRECT answer is to press the "WIKI" button at the top of the screen, select YOUR DEVICE, and read the instructions THERE. Wiki = "official". Thread = who the hell knows.

What these guys are talking about is that one of the side effects of the recommended method to root the G2 is that the phone becomes SIM unlocked in the process. If you root your phone using the "gfree method" your phone will be both unlocked and rooted (and more) at the end of the process and it won't cost you a dime.
WOAH,.... bet the OP is gona be well confuzzled!!!!
TO CLARIFY.......
Both links provided, and also the WIKI will point you towards the "GFree Root, Super CID & Subsidy unlock".
No-one has given you incorrect info here.
I already perm rooted my G2 so I guess the gfree method is out..... Thanks for the suggestions though and it's my own damn fault for not doing my homework first.

Ok so the one reply that said to ignore our advice is a troll and spends more time getting warnings from mods...next its not too late to reroot and sim unlock via gfree just do a bit of reading in that rollup thread I linked. U may need to unroot first and redo it with gfree but totally doable my friend.

You should still be able to use gfree to unlock even if you have already got permanent root.

We have. The rollup thread has everything he'll need and there are much better tuts to start with (installing/setting up adb etc) that will get him started before he can even look at the Wiki and make sense of it.
That said, now the OP will most likely be interested in unrooting depending on how he perma-rooted it and try to get back to a full gfree subsidy/super cid/s-off unlock.
What was your contribution again?

Wait, if it's a T-mobile G2, why would you have to downgrade the radio to run gfree? It will work on a post-ota radio. Well unless you flashed a newer radio from the radio thread, but both pre/post ota G2 radios are fine as is.
Only the desire z should need to be downgraded.

man what is gfree and how 2 use it ?
look in dev section, there is guides on how to use gfree and root, best is to look at xda vision wiki
No one here is going to hold your hand through it. You have to search and learn a little. Then you will notice a lot more help

The term "unlocked" is confusing. Do you mean rooted or SIM unlocked?
Either way, it can be done for free. Link has instructions for rooting. If you want SIM unlocked, you need to root AND be Subsidy Unlocked. This method is considered the safest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Look up rooting g2 no abd required. If you have a new one. You will have to downgrade after u get s-off but no root and then do the same process again. Holding hands is good.

if you dont try, then you wont learn. Read the link and if you have any specific questions then ask.
the wiki is as "rooting for idiots" as it gets. if you can't follow the steps one by one, then pay someone to root it for you.
This is a sticky from here. Follow the directions to the letter. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 It's not that hard. Just follow the DIRECTIONS. Failure to follow the directions will result in a high dollar paper weight. If you brick your phone it was by your own doing. Just know the outcome if you mess up.
Don't pay attention to all these people telling you that you'll "learn" if you really want it done. We were all new at some point, and I never have seen the usefulness in comments like that. Anyway, there are lots of us out there willing to help, post up exactly what you don't understand and I'll do my best to help you out. However, whatever you do DO NOT attempt perm rooting with visionary, your phone would most likely turn into a really pretty paperweight

i disagree with you. I have been here at xda for a long time and I relied first on reading instructions that have been posted a long time ago and when I had questions I specifically ask about the part I didn't understand not shoot first and ask later.
Here on xda since 2008. If he honestly wants real help then he has to make an effort to learn not just look at the wiki and just throw a general help cry. The wiki has the instructions step by step. If you have specific questions about a step or two, then ask that, not "I'M NOT A PRO, HELP PLS"
Speaking of root I can't have a pc so I can't downgrade to stock ota don't really want to either. I'm guessing only way to root is still going to need me to downgrade.

well, based on my understanding (I might be wrong) but I believe it is possible to downgrade from your phone via sd. Again, I might be wrong, but if that is possible then you might be able to achieve root once you do the downgrade. Otherwise, maybe you can borrow a friend's PC to do the downgrade.
Good luck
This should explain how to root.

************************THIS SCRIPT WILL NO LONGER EXIST BY ANY MEANS AS IT DID NOT WORK. IT WORKED IN THE BEGINNING, BUT WHEN THE COMMAND ( chmod 777 gfree ) CAME ALONG ADB WOULD NOT ALLOW IT. I'M REMOVING THE FILE FROM MEDIAFIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. BUT, IT CAN'T BRICK BECAUSE IT DOSEN'T EVEN BEGIN TO ROOT. : (
This script was made using windows command prompt.. So don't even attempt with Mac OS, unless you use Parallels or whatever.
EVEN THOUGH I MADE THIS SCRIPT TO MAKE PERM ROOTING WITH GFREE ALOT EASIER, EVEN MYSELF DOES NOT REALLY TRUST THIS SCRIPT ANYMORE.. I AM HIGHLY RECOMMENDING YOU USE THE VIDEO THAT GUIDED ME WITH THE MAKING OF THIS SCRIPT. EVEN THOUGH I DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN YOUR GLACIER BEING BRICKED, I STILL DON'T WANT IT TO HAPPEN REGARDLESS. NEITHER DO YOU. PLEASE, DO YOURSELF AND I A FAVOR AND USE THE VIDEO. THANKS -- I just looked through it and suspect it to work, i coded it and typed it correctly so I have gained a little more trust into it.. please, post your outcome on this thread. Thanks, iN98-
I just made this as of July 30, 2012 21:09:56. With no help except a guide from this video
Even newer link.. : ) HIGH SPEED 1.1MB/s DOWNLOAD LINK
I haven't got to test it so if a problem shall fall, POST THEM ALL!
Oh and also, if you want me to make a script for you (especially with ADB involved) PM me, and i'll get you hooked up faster than Lizard Lick
I just noticed on the link that a exploit "virus" was found for android.. this is from GFree/SDK.. Not the script, the script is just a .bat file that runs from the Android SDK "Platform-Tools" folder. Don't be alarmed.**********
ALSO, THIS WAS A BLIND BUILD.. IF YOU BRICK IT'S NOT MY FAULT. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IN ERROR.
Just a thought you might wanna put script in the title and put some more explanation in the OP just to make it clear what it is. I like the idea though. I hope it works for everyone. It would make everyone's lives easier. Good luck!

Although i don't really understand the 2nd part of that statement, there is a difference between doing something manually and using a script.
