[Q] Bad radio with Cyanogen 6.1, any updates/other roms? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here's the deal, I recently rooted my Evo and installed latest Cyanogen (stable). It is amazing and I get over twice as much memory available at an given time than the sprint lovers rom (htc sense). But I have one problem: the cellular/wifi radios are really buggy. First of all, I get significantly less service wherever I am, and I can't ever send a text message over 160 chars (that is, 2 or more txts simultaneously). Now I don't know that the txt issue is because of the crappy stock messaging app cyan comes with or what (if you know any good txt messaging apps let me know, something that resembles the functionality of the default htc sense app?) but here is my main question:
Is there a radio update for the EVO? Regardless that 4G isn't even supported in Cyan (shame since I have to pay 10$ a month for something that's not even an option on the rom) I downloaded 6.1 straight from the cyanogen site and the google apps as well. Flashed through clockwork recovery. Works great and much much faster don't get me wrong, but the cellular radio sucks. Let's sum it up:
1. Cellular radio update?
2. WiFi radio update? (turns on and off randomly, don't get as much range)
3. A rom similar to cyanogen in terms of functionality, but with these issues addressed? (that is, lots more free memory than stock rom, 4G capability, good signal, etc)
Sorry if this makes no sense or goes on too long, but Cyanogen is one hell of a mod, just sucks that it basically downgrades the actual PHONE part of my phone. Thanks for any replies

I'm also having similar issues... For your WiFi, turn the sleep policy to never and see if that helps.
Go to Settings->Wireless & networks-WiFi settings then press menu->Advanced then set your WiFi sleep to never.
As for the cell radio, I'm also having significantly less signal reception. My wife has Baked Snack 1.9 and in the same area where she'll be at full bars, i'll be at like 2 and my download speeds are ass..

1. Yes there are new radios, flash them.
2. What the guy above me said.
3. Look in the EVO 4G Android Development section for AOSP ROMs, those the issues are generally generalized across the board. For the mms issues, just use "handcent" from the market.

One thing to realize with the bars measuring signal strength...on sense roms they measure cellular signal, while on cyanogen they measure data signal. So most likely it will always look like you have a weaker connection on cyanogen.

??? Who told you this? I'm not seeing the correlation on my and my wife's EVO's... My signal is low when hers is high then my speeds and voice is ass while both of hers is ok.

1) Signal isn't really any worse, just HTC's bars lied about it (it's a common thing with OEM's. Apple did it with AT&T until they got busted and reeled it in a bit). If you want to see your real signal, go into the CM settings, and under the UI section, enable the dB signal display, and disable the bars. THERE'S your real signal.
2) Texting: CDMA is limited to 160 characters. All that Handcent and the HTC Messaging app do is automatically split and join sequential messages, or you can do it yourself when you text, manually.
3) Wifi: CM will automatically stop using a network if it detects that it's going in and out of range so much that it's killing the battery, and right now, you have to manually re-enable the network.
4) Go to a Sense ROM, update PRL+Profile, make sure your PRI is up to date, etc. etc. etc.
5) If you really don't like CM, just search for AOSP ROM's, or you can always go back to a Sense-based ROM. Nobody's holding you hostage except yourself.
I get better everything on CM than I do on Sense.

Yeah I know about the dbm, pretty neat, but ugly in the status bar CM is nice aside from the lack of 4g, which we will get soon. It's just that so far my 3g speeds are ass compared to when I use a sense ROM... nothing can be perfect I guess.

CM6 Horrific 3G speeds? Sense way better...

i have sense on my evo again because everywhere i went no matter my signal, the bars on cm6 showed 1-2 rarely 3 never 4 and the 3G was painfully slow. ran tests and i got .1 mbps on cm6, flashed sense to see if my phone was the problem and it got 1mbps, ten times faster? can anyone explain the potential problem here? its killing me cuz i love aosp but the 3G is killin me
Always had the same issue here. One of the reasons I stay on a sense based rom.

Post in Q&A
And just a suggestion, install a senseless ROM... Built off sense but has sense removed... Will be the closest thing to AOSP but will keep your speeds and 4g working.
The signle meter on CM6 only has 4 bars, the Sense one has like 8. You are getting the same coverage.
Secondly, wrong forum. This is development.
Third. I have slow 3G on CM6 roms too. I have no idea why, and everyone else will tell you it's Sprint. But I can be in the same place, and run speedtests and Sense based ROMs are always faster.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Yup. Sense will always have better 3G signal. Sometimes when I am on CM the signal even drops down to 1x.
Thats irrelevant .. he also posted the speeds he was getting. OP, I don't know what's wrong; doesn't happen to me. Is it on all aosp roms? Try messing round with the settings
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
oops i thought i posted in q&a, my bad.
and i understand the whole bar ratio but on sense i get like 7 bars out of 8 rather than 1 out of 4. seriously it is almost ALWAYS 1 bar and it drops to 1x a lot! its never faster than about 125kb/s on a speedtest no matter where i am. its almost like theres a governor bogging it down
ALSO: ive flashed gingerbread roms galore, all the same issue.
On a AOSP rom the 4 bars are the 4 low bars outta the 6 in sense, so if u see only two bars then ur short 4 which gives u horrible battery. Also kernels play the biggest role in data if u want to believe it or not...

I had the same problem until I flashed a Sense rom, re-flashed the newest radio after first boot. Updated the profile then restarted the phone. I then could flash any AOSP rom with no speed problems. But every time i go back to a sense rom I must do that again if I want to go back to AOSP...
I don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me...

Make sure "Data enabled", "International data roaming", and "National data roaming" are checked, and "System select" is on Automatic.
And before you freak out, all of the EVO plans on Sprint have unlimited roaming.

hahahahaaha thanks i already know all that. and yes its all checked.
well it seems that the radio flash and updating the profile worked some magic. speeds are up above 700kbps
EDIT: nope. back to horrible speeds jk
can i get some feedback from more CM users please? this is so confusing
I had the same problem on cm6. Still don't understand why but I'm sticking with a sense rom. I get the best results on myns roms. Fresh was almost just as bad as cm6 as far as speeds go. Kinda weird imo. Maybe someone can explain?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If I had to guess, its due to the fact most sense based roms have the carrier spyware built in. (ksoftiq I think is the process name)
But, thats just a guess, I'm probably wrong.
I have the same issue with cm6 and the latest gb asop roms. Not with the display of the bars, but on asop roms only at my work I will bounce between 1x and 3g. I will lose data, then go to 1x, then back to 3g constantly. When holding, the signal isnt too bad, but it is almost as if the phone cannot pick between towers or something. I have tried multiple radio/pri combos and such and have no solution. Also tired switching back to sense and updated profile and prl.
Edit: Could it also be location based? This only happens at work in Burbank, CA. Just about everywhere else I am around LA I do not have this problem.
I suffered from this on cm. On gb I get great speeds for a while then it will act crazy and get slow. I reboot and it goes back to being fast again.

if u ever notice some of those extra processes running in the background of sense like IQRD or IQ agent for example... i believe some of those are qualcomm based programs that help ensure good data transfer speeds. And it's funny that we all hated sense because of those extra background processes that seem to slow the whole system down but some of them are actually helping to keep data speeds up in sense roms. Obviously in AOSP those processes are not present therefore speeds arent always as reliable and may drop in and out. Im just speculating on this and have no concrete proof but i did read up on one of the processes and it points to qualcomm's cdma based technology development so im assuming there is a correlation.

im clearly half retarded

so i thought i did the right thing...to start from the top...my old evo broke...got a new evo...didnt update the prl...rooted/flashed a new rom and boom...my internet blows...its stuck on 1x...so..i flashed a sense rom...updated the prl...now im missing something because when i go back to the roms i wanna use...its still stuck on 1x...what am i doing wrong?

You're most likely not doing anything wrong. I assume you're using an AOSP rom. Aosp roms show your true signal, if you're on 3g or 1x. Sense roms show 3g all the time, even if you're on 1x. Sense lies to you. Aosp shows the truth. Although there is now a mod that allows you to see true signal on Sense as well now.

A PRL is a "preferred roaming list" and has nothing to do with data speeds unless you're talking about data speeds when you're roaming. Do you mean that you are getting no 3G coverage at all?

Are you sure you are getting 3g at all? Sense doesnt tell you when you are on 1x unless you grab an app for that. Are the 1x culprits all aosp and you are just under the impression you are getting 3g on sense when in all reality you are not? Run a few speedtest.net tests and let us know what your speeds are on both on both. I doubt your speed changed.
hmmm...interesting....well im running MIUI...but its weird...because i used to get good signal...i wonder if maybe this is tying in too all the problems it seems a lot of people are having...im gonna run the speed test right now and see
signal and speed arent necessary related, though i believe aosp does calculate that into theirs. On sense it is (almost?) always separate. Anyhow I have only seen a few phones get "stuck" internally at 1x, no worries that would also be fixable.
You may just be having tower issues, thank sprint for that. Another good question is do you get 3g on a diff tower? drive out of the range of your current tower and see what ya get.
yea im gettin a steady 1x from home all the way to work which is about 15 miles away...
my first test:
Ping: 558ms Dl:125 Ul:148
second test:
ping: 807ms Dl: 126 Ul: 140
3rd:
ping: 786ms dl: 126 ul: 143
im not too knowledgable about this stuff....but i feel like the numbers are good right?
No, those are def 1x speeds. Sprint average is 540k. Being that you have used multiple towers i would assume its the phone. Grab easy settings from triforce, luke and see what the settings are. If you cant get back to 3g you may want to grab the 2g/3g toggle from triforce, luke for a buck and set it to hybrid or evdo only and see if that works. Its the only thing that helped me once.
I tried profile restores, other prls, everything. Have you tried any other prls? I wouldnt suggest a profile restore because you dont have 3g and it needs that to provision.
Have you gone into ##3282# (sense rom), and cleared your profile data (top item, then menu IIRC). This will cause the phone to reboot, and do an OTA activation on the subsequent boot.
Have you messed with your 3g settings - meaning, is the device being forced into cdma mode only??
Which rom did you specifically flash?
And I guess most importantly, before you did anything, did you ensure 3g/4g work with the phone in its stock state?

I had this same issues awhile back and the quoted text is what worked for me.
you can try a profile restore but it may not activate well without 3g. Sprint told me that themselves, so have others...though it did activate for me, i have seen people get stuck though for a bit...
well...from what i understand i guess i have no idea if 3g was working before...i know 4g did work fine...and it still works weather im using the wimax setting on a sense rom or even before i rooted it....so somebody give me a run down of what to try...i read a lot of those suggestions...and to be totally honest...i have no idea what too do...like i said im kinda new to this whole thing
nevermind...i found the thread with the whole step by step process...thanks for your help guys...i got it up and running

[Q] I can't seem to get 4G anymore on G2.. HELP?

I was using MIUI and it had 4G all the time... then I switched to Virtuous and it had so many problems with reception automatically.
I also tried installing the kernel to fix it, but it didn't work.
so i gave up and I went to CM7 and I am still not getting 4G signal anymore
and I get internet but its ridiculously slow now
PLZ HELP!
could be several things... if it's a rom/radio issue, you're s.o.l. until you can narrow down what's causing it there. did you perform a full wipe between Virtuous and CM7? did you use cwm recovery to perform the wipe? any other weirdness going on besides the apparent lack of HSPA+? I always, even going from one CM-based rom to another, perform a clean wipe either thru adb or, now, thanks to our buddy amazinglarry, using superwipeg2. you might give that a shot (you don't need to wipe efs data unless you're having gps issues, by the way) and install CM7 clean again.
I will say this: when I initially started using the CM7 nightlies, I ran into a weird issue where my "H" icon wouldn't show up, only 3G/E, but I was definitely on HSPA+ as evidenced from speed tests (there's no way I'd be getting 9000+kbps down on 3G). so, very first step: download Speed Test on the app market and, if you're in an area where HSPA+ is strong, see if you can tell whether or not the icon is not displaying for you like what happened in my case. how fast your internet seems to be going isn't really indicative of whether or not you're on HSPA+ or not, you can encounter horrendous lag browsing even in an area where it should be lightning quick. what ended up fixing the missing H icon for me, oddly, was a radio flash. the PC10IMG method of flashing radios is far from intimidating, so even if you're uncomfortable with that kind of stuff, give it a shot. I've had the best luck with the TMO-US post-OTA radio (26.03.02.26) in terms of a good balance between speed and battery life, but ymmv.
if none of that solves your problem, check your APN settings. here is a pretty thorough walkthrough on that.
aaaand if all else fails, call TMO and ask them to give you a hand. of course, don't tell them anything about custom roms or rooting, just tell them you're having a problem where your phone seems to not be receiving HSPA+ signal. it very well could be a goof-up on their end. when I first got my G1 back in the day, I had all sorts of trouble getting 3G and I eventually had to replace my sim card which fixed the problem automatically.
best'a luck.
thank you, it was the Radio. Something must have happened with it somehow you were VERY VERY helpful!
One thing you do have to know as well for Virtuous ROMs is that the so called 4G or H is actually represented as 3G+. So if you look at your signal and see a + behind it, it is using fauxG
EDIT: nm, just ignore what I just said. I completely passed over the fact that you switched to cm7.

[Q] WiMAX/4G/Android 4.0 OS/USB Tether/4G Donor/ Chrome/Radio/Baseband/UP-Downgrade

Hi guys,
I do not know what the versions are and their compatibility issues are or pre-requisite issues.
To be frank enough, all I wanted was everything working on my phone.
1. Calling. - Made a call t overify
2. SMS - workingas well
3. MMS - took a picture of mine as per the suggestion of klown80 and sent it to my own phone number. voila It came. MMS also working
4. 3G - I see the 3G button on the top of the screen constantly.
I checked speedtest.net and I'm getting around 1.4 mbps on an average which is ok.
5. Guess what - WiFi Tether - This is also working. It is only 1.5 mbps speed when I connect to my phone's internet. But that is ok when You do not have any internet and You have this wifi tether and You are able to connect to internet at 1.5 MBps it is OK for me.
But I have a few questions here.
1. I'm unable to call 611 from my HTC EVO 4G. Is there anything that I need to know/do on my HTC EVO 4G to get my 611 working after the flashing thing is done?
2. How to do USB Tethering ( Although not compulsory since I have wifi tether already working on my HTC EVO 4G )
3. What is the Limit of Data at 3G speed by Boost. Even though they say unlimited, it kind of sucks after 1 or 2 or something GB. What is it ?
4. Guys, I need Chrome Browser and I cannot do it in my 2.2 or 2.3 Android. So I need 4.0+ Android. So can You please guide me where or how I can download/get/install/boot from a zip the 4.0 Android so that I can download Chrome browser.
5. Guys anyone of You have seen the speed of Sprint's WiMAX. As per my reasearch goes
HSPA+ ( GSM - AT&T , T-Mobile - of Course T-Mobile's 4G means HSPA+ but not LTE and thats why they do not advertise LTE anywhere only 4G ) ----------- which is also called as 3.5 G in terms of speed comparison between 3G and LTE( if You consider LTE as true 4G speeds
WiMAX ( CDMA - Sprint, Verizon - Although Verizn has more LTE Coverage than all the other carriers combined and the fact that LTE is really faster, do any of You guys have any idea about the Sprint WiMAX Speed, Coverage?
If anyone was able to try the 4G/WiMAX of Sprint, what is the speed that You are getting?
6. Because Boost also entered the so called 4G Race, and Boost bringing all of the Nextel Towers down in another 3-4 months( I was using iDEN Phone earlier ). its time to see how good the Boost/Sprint 4G/WiMAX coverage is and if You are in the coverage area how much speed are You getting?
7. As per my research goes on, for getting a 4G/WiMAX speed, I need to get a 4G capable phone as my donor, so that I can use that phone as my Donor Phone for my Samsung Galaxy SIII. So I want to know what is the speed of 4G/WiMAX?
7. Last but not the least, Is there any way that any one can look at my phone's details below and let me know, how to get the latest, baseband, radio, something, something blah blah, . But ultimately, I get everything working just like I have now on my phone and also I should be able to download Chrome Browser.
But my BootLoader ( klown80 ) screen says :
Revolutionary ( in pink background )
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.16.1002
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-AMTELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.05.02
Mar 8 2011,17:02:15
So what is that I migh have a problem with, or what is that I should do to download Chrome on my HTC EVO 4G.
Thanks a lot guys for all the help and You have a great day ahead.
Thanks,
A J.

Hopefully I was able to answer some of your questions in the PM. I'm sure others will chime in, as well.
Sent using my EVO 4G and a magic wand
Holy Text Walls batman!...well i'll answer what I can, using the same numbering you used:
1. the 611 thing may be related to the sprint network; never used them before. Much like aosp roms, though ## features only work on sprint roms
2. usb tethering....download an app from the market, or use the native setting if your rom comes with one, then simply plug into the pc.
3. idk...but if you're getting 1.5-2mb on 3G, don't be looking to get any better, best you can get there.
4. you're gona need ics 4.x+ to get chrome browser. you'll have to flash an ics rom, or use firefox mobile; a good alternative.
5. on sprint's lte, i've seen around 25mb from my friends in lte areas.
6. idk...and idk if you will get 4G on boosts network; i don't think so, but i could....marginally, be wrong.
7. 4g vs lte speeds...completely different...you may get 15mb down on 4g vs 26mb on lte.
7. nothing really to do, besides radio. In a previous pm i sent you instructions on how to do with, with the thread,
HTC EVO 4G to Boost Mobile
Thanks guys,
1. I'm now in a confusion. Sometimes I'm connecting to 611. Sometimes I'm unable to connect to 611 and it throws me some error code at the end before the call getting disconnected.
Will try to update about this problem, after trying at different times and different occasions.
I'm also trying to get some more information on how to update my baseband and radio and mainly Android OS.
Is there any thread which any one could point me to so that I can update my Android OS and download chrome.
Thanks a lot for the support guys.
There isn't any one particular thread I can think of as far as updating your OS. Really, you can go to the Development section and look at some of the stickies for info. You can also read through the different ROM threads and see which one suits you best. Biggest thing to keep in mind is that Gingerbread ROM's tend to be the most fully-functional, whereas ICS or JB ROM's don't have working 4G, FFC (Front-Facing Camera) and other issues. As far as Chrome goes, I've never used it on my phone so I can't help you there.
Edit: Here's a link to help you. Also, check the other link I posted above as far as updating your radio. Be careful flashing the radio, as it can be a sure-fire way to brick your device if you screw something up. Just make sure you have a good charge on your battery and be patient. Some people say the radio update can take a few minutes-mine didn't take long, but it can. Don't pull the battery in the middle of the update thinking something has gone wrong.

Well I'm not gone re-invent the wheel, though a good portion of what he said here is true; especially on the radio. When it updates, generally takes 30s...but if it dies or you do a battery pull, 90% chance of bricking.
And as far as flashing a rom, all the threads tell you, 'how to install my rom.'
Generally: backup previous rom in recovery > do a full wipe > flash rom > flash gapps [if its an aosp rom] > reboot.
The only thing you need to look for is if the rom has a2sd built in [will say in the OP], and if it does, you will need to partition your sd card, otherwise the rom won't boot up.

+1 on Firefox. It is getting sooooooo much better with every release! I remember when it was a joke. Not any more. I've been a faithful Opera user 'till now (and I'm not yet 100% ready to switch) but Firefox has grown by leaps and bounds. I think I can state without reservation that it is a fantastic option for Android users now.

Force/increase 4G connectivity vs 3G, auto tethering when connected to power

I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.
as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553
I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?
i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.
I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!
