I have an HTC Desire 2.1 CDMA with US Cellular. I tried rooting with unrevoked a couple of times with no sucess. procedure got to the clockworkmod recovery screen it showed:
E: unsupported radio
E: update failed
Installation aborted.
Short version of what it showed.
I had to pull the battery to get the phone rebooted and it is stock with the exception of a super user app that is blank when opened. How can remove the superuser app that does not work? I have tried a factory reset and it does not work. Or how can I get the rooting process to finish?

Since you already have ClockworkMod, just flash a custom ROM in. Nothing to it, really.
I dont think the rooting process completely finished. When the process stopped the phone was in the clockworkmod screen and said the installation aborted. I selected reboot but the screen just went to an android with a warning triangle. I had to pull the battery to get the phone to reboot. The superuser app that is in my phone is empty. I open it and there is nothing there it is just a blank screen with no options. So again I do not think the rooting process completed and I have tried a few other times with the same result. How can I know for sure if the root took?
Install "Android Terminal Emulator" from the market..Write "su" (without quotes) and if there are no errors and superuser app will ask the permission (accept it), means u have root permissions working..
The superuser app will contains a list of apps that requested root permission..If u didn't used any app that required root, the list is empty..
EDIT: Also, Installation aborted in the clockworkmod mean you was trying to install a custom rom or something, but means u already have root. The Installation aborted in the clockworkmod is not related to the root process
he means installation aborted on enrevoked program. he has no superuser access. something is preventing unrevoked from rooting your Desire. if you have htc sync, remove it but leave driver as is.
also download modified HBOOT drivers from unrevoked site. turn off desire and reboot in hboot mode(back button+power on) connect Desire and let it install the drivers. if it prompts for manual install, then point out where you extracted modified hboot drivers.
after drivers installation reboot in normal mode and rerun Unrevoked again to see if rooting proxess finishes.
report back.

I had rooted my phone and updated the radio to 1.47.651.1 when I tried to update a custom rom I accidently re-ran PC36IMG.zip and it rebooted quick NOW the radio says 1:39:00:04:26
and in the options below I now have
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB
I tried putting the phone on FASTBOOT then connected it to the USB and began a stock rom not rooted and it boots my phone into an HTC Black screen Boot mode and begins to update until it comes to the signatures and it gives me an error.
I run windows 7
I went and tried this, connected sd card to Computer with adapter and transferred stock rom rooted and renamed it to sdcard.zip
booted Evo to bootloader and chose recovery.
I as usual got the black background with EVO Icon and red triangle with exclamation mark.
There I click on hold Volume Up and Power until I get the following error:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Then I click volume up and the following title and menu appear:
Android system recovery <2e>
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
When I choose the sdcard:update option the following message is displayed
----Install from Sdcard ------
Finding Update package
Opening update package
verifying update package
E:signature verification failed
instalation aborted
After, I downloaded tha froyo 2.2 file and placed it on the sd and rename it to update.zip
and when I ran Update.zip from bootloader it ran half way but then stopped saying the following error
failed to verify whole-file signature
So now I load any PC36IMG and I get NO QUESTION to update just puts me onto the bootloader screen….
Not bricked, just stuck. Download stock ruu, plug phone into computer and install. Or put pc136.img on rot of sd, boot into fast boot, it should install automatically. If none of the above, go to a sprint store, tell them it won't boot and you don't know why, and they will flash or replace.

What I would do from here if I were you is put that sd card back in the computer and erase everything on it.
while your at it shut down the phone. Hold down the volume down button and press power. When that comes up post what version of Hboot you have please.
And I'll be better able to help out.
WOw
did you try to reinstall another ROM?
if you still see the RECOVERY menu item, go there and then go where it says update from zip on sdcard. then using up/down buttons highlight the .zip file of the ROM then push the power button to make it run.
this hoping you got a ROM on your sdcard. if not just get one at the forum and download.
i got clockworkmod but im sure the other recovery tools have similar options.
@ adelaney Stock Ruu begins to update and gives me an error when signatures are being installed. I tried three Stock ROMS

Ok here's the deal. If you have nan unlock, fully rooted then you should have a nandroid back. If you do then boot into recovery and no a nandroid restore. This should boot you to one of your pervious backup/ system state.
Please note.
If you are fully rooted u should always do a nandroid backup before you flash any update, that way u can do a restore in the even something goes wrong.

Thank you for the information but it was a step I did not do... The tutorial that I went with did not speak about that when I rooted my phone...
EDIT: I even tried mixing files that I have downloaded with various PC36IM.zip and nothing triggers the update question.
Would they be able to notice if its rooted?

Most likely NOT bricked if it boots!
Sounds like you re-applied root but glitched somewhere?
Try root again - may still work?

What version is your hboot - press power and volume down WITHOUT pc36img.zip, update, etc on your sd - i.e. rename it or remove it, i.e. with adb or sd card slot on pc.... See if you can still access recovery?
I've been hammering on these things for a bit and if I can get into the boot screen, it's pretty much good to go...
Hboot-0.79.0000
Also the error that began all of this was running the wrong PC36IMG to begin with... I had 1.4 radio and I think that the one I used had the 1.3 radio so the only thing that helped me boot up again was that 1,2,3 step flashing so I thought that I had to take the second step and that placed in on booter, I have not been able to boot again ever since.... That was yesterday been trying for about 9 hours lol

Try whitslack's method.
EDIT: Nevermind, no can do.
What happens is that my phone DOES read the PC36IMG.zip but it does not give me update option as it used to before. Any suggestions?

Reroot your phone using toast method! That is all! If you are on 1.47 then use simple root!
Seems you have un-rooted the boot me thinks but also read something about mixing radio's causing grief, someone more in the know could answer that... If you can get to hboot usb and try the RUU from your PC? Sometimes taking the battery out and restarting, if communication fails, try it again, rebooting the pc, hell I have no procedure, I just hammer till it makes sense, however 9 hours - holy crap, I'd be foaming at the face!
Ok will do right away and post update

I have done that via PC and the only thing that works with that are the stock roms since they come in EXE they manage to reboot my phone and everything but when the update gets to the signature part it says it fails in the signatures and aborts... any other custom roms that have EXE?

Alright first off.. I might NOT be stuck, I am just unsure because I am a noob at this! I want to be certain not to brick my phone or screw it up on this screen, so here is what I did step by step so far...
-Installed Hboot drivers successfully (android 1.0)
-Downloaded and installed unrevoked 3 recovery reflash tool v3.22
-Carefully proceeded with the steps from: [GUIDE] One Click How to Root EVO with Unrevoked 3.21 *NEW EVO'S WONT WORK 11.16.10* http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
-I had my phone mounted as "Disk Drive" instead of "charge only" and didnt realize this untill I got to the clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.1 screen. Unrevoked 3 went through the process from what I think is somewhat completed.. unrevoked went to a somewhat grey screen on my pc and displays:
Done.
Recovery image: clockworkmod recovery
-My HTC EVO phone came to a stop at ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1 and has a menu with some options like reboot, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe, install zip from SDcard, nandroid, partitions menu, advanced, and a ++go back++
-The step above is where my problem is.. When i got to that screen it read my SDcard and mounted it, then said installing DATA:local/unrevoked-forever.zip, then said found, opened, and displayed installing update...
-After that it displayed:
unrEVOked forever S-OFF patch v1.1
verifying system type...
E:unsupported radio version
E:update failed. Check /SDcard/soff.log.
E:error in /data/local/unrevoked-forever.zip (status 42)
Installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.
-STUCK, because I don't know what to do next, I thought it was a "1-click rooting process" ha.. I havnt touched anything on my pc or EVO since it came to this screen so can someone help me get past it..?
I just need some help on where to go from this menu. I am trying to root my phone. However it has a BAD ESN(which is why i am using this phone for learning how to flash, root, unlock, etc..) So idk if theres something special I need to do because it has a bad esn or if im just being too damn cautious, but like i said... Im a noob and dont want to brick my phone or waste time.

This usually means that you need to update the radio before you can use unrevoked-forever. Since it is possible to install the new radio using a zip you could just copy it to the sdcard and flash it, then after it completes you should try unrevoked again, it should work at that point.
So what option do I choose on the clockwork screen? its not going to mess the phone up since im backing out is it? also what files do you reccomend I put on my SDcard? the phone had a good ESN up to 12/10.
I just ended up clicking nandroid backup then clicked reboot and now I have supersuser permissions.. Im guessing I completed the root?
getting past E:unsupported radio version

I had this same issue when using simply the unrevoked 3.22 application. My radio is: 2.15.00.09.01
I needed to manually download the unrevoked-forever.zip, place it on my sdcard, and flash it using recovery. When you get to this point in the process, you should have an active recovery (like clockwork), that you can use for this.
What surprised me, was that I didn't even alter my radio. I had prepared to need to downgrade my radio, but it wasn't even necessary. Once I manually tried to flash unrevoked-forever.zip, it just worked.
You know it works if your bootloader shows (S-OFF)
Okay so I ran unrevoked it said root was a triumph then came up with an error (validation error: backup CID is missing) I then went on to manually root the phone by installing Amon-Ra from hboot. I successfully got it to install but then when I went to install SU from recovery it said installation failed signature not verified, or something like that. I then tried to install it from the market and it installed then I went into terminal emulator and typed in "su" (without ") and it did not change the prompt. I have hboot 2.10 and the newest software on my phone and s-off. Can someone please help.
Since you have S-OFF and a custom recovery, just flash a new ROM and call it a day.
Hi
I've hit a problem while trying to root my device. Unrevoked does it's thing, the phone reboots, but then Unrevoked reports that it's lost connection to the device and that I should try again.
I've made sure that my default USB connection type is HTC Sync.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
Some tips for other users that have problems that I've overcome:
- When you get the Internal Error from Unrevoked 3 trying to load the image, make sure you have enough space your Desire's (ridiculously tiny) app storage.
- When the phone is on the boot screen but not going any further in 5 minutes, you probably still need to install the custom usb driver on your windows machine. Get it here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install

Your default connection type has to "only load" and "never ask". Furthermore, you have to check "unknown sources" under settings>applications.

Thanks, by "only load" you mean "charge only"? If so, I've had it on charge only but unrevoked just stays on "Waiting for Device" until I switch to HTC SYnc.
Unkown sources are ticked for sure.

Not connecting at all under anything but HTC Sync.
And have you installed the custom usb driver? Also HTC Sync should not be installed when running Unrevoked3.

Yep I'm doing exactly that, and everything works until it comes back after the last boot, unrevoked waits for the system to "settle down" then "rooting..." displays for 1/2 second, then Unrevoked reports that there was an unexpected communications break with the phone.

Okay, maybe linux can do the work for you:
1.) Download ubuntu version 32-bit (not the 64-bit version, needed drivers are missing):
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
2.) Burn the downloaded image on cd and start your computer from it (only the test version, do not install it)
3.) Download unrevoked for linux (in firefox download window set "open with archiv manager"):
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.32/reflash.tar.gz
4.) Drag and drop the file "reflash" to desktop
5.) Set phone correctly:
- applications>check "unknown sources"
- applications>development>check "usb debugging"
- set connection type to "charge only" and uncheck to ask for connection
6.) Reboot phone; sometimes, when the phone runs too long, some processes "drive crazy"
7.) Start terminal in ubuntu:
applications>accessories>terminal and type
Code:
cd Desktop
sudo ./reflash
running reflash needs admin rights
8.) Connect phone to computer and then
WAIT.... WAIT... WAIT

I'm starting to realise that... Irony is one of the reasons for rooting is for the backup!
Mother of everything sacred! I've just done a factory reset sacrificing hours of app installation and config, and STILL unrevoked doesnt work!! It just says communications lost unexpectedly after the first boot.
Going to sit in a corner for a while.
I ran it thrice and suddenly it worked the Ubuntu way.
I have a problem with doing Unrevoked root for my HTC Desire.

From memory the phone had to be rooted prior to attempting the S-OFF.
The two procedures are unrelated if the problem is the rooting then how far did you get with it? again from memory a goldcard isn't required for the unrevoked procedure(happy for someone to jog my memory).
If is S-OFF then the issue I had was that I was running a custom ROM which caused the procedure to fail. I just restored an earlier backup through CWM/recovery and alpharev S-OFF went through flawlessly.

I used the Unrevorked option and it did root my phone. After that, I followed the procedure and went to do Alpha Rev. I burned their image to CD, booted my computer and after booting from CD it found my desire. Procedure started but stopped in the middle.
So, now I can access Hboot and ClockWorkRecovery (I have SD card with CWM 2.5.0.7 and second with 3.x.x.x version) but not boot the phone anymore. Nothing to restore from the card either, I tried backup/restore with CWM, nothing is there. PVT4 S-ON is still enabled. When I boot my phone and go into CWM I get following errors:

Can't find MISC: Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
I can see from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814381 (step 3) that I should be able to just copy the Rom on my SD card and install the zip. So I copied several roms to try. This is what I used and errors I got:

I've read a few times that CWM is not good enough and that I should go to Amon, but I don't know how to do that. Did try the method from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814381 (A2SD part) but it isn't working for me. I do this:
fastboot-windows flash recovery what-you-called-amonra-recovery.img
And I get FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
Several posts http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-992114.html say I should update CWM - but if I try that (install zip from sd card) i again get can't mount cache.
It's probably something I'm missing, but it is too much for a novice like me. Help appreciated. (mounting cache but I have no clue how to do it)
Woah! Woah! LOL no need to install Linux to root!
Try this:
First, S-OFF your Desire using AlpharevX (already used to S-OFF friends Wildfire), in the process, it will prompt you whether you wish to install Alpharev's custom recovery, choose yes.
Once you've done that, boot into recovery, BACKUP YOUR CURRENT ROM, and install whichever ROM you downloaded! Easy!
Damn! Always too late, just read you managed to root it, ah well, maybe someone else will need this ^
