so i bought a second hand slide for my wife maybe a month ago. it was supposedly brand new (i believe it was). i've rooted it and have cyan's latest running on it. today, however, several of the buttons quit working. home is okay and so is the genius button. but the menu, back, and touchpad have all stopped responding. is this something that's occuring with this phone with frequency? i haven't called tmobile yet as i'm currently restoring her app's from a fresh wipe but i'd thought i'd see if this has happened to anyone else.

No, never happened to me, did you say you already tried doing a full wipe/reflash? If that didn't work try flashing a different ROM like cr_mod or 3rd sense and see if the buttons work in those. Could be a corrupted ROM, redownload and reflash it. If you haven't already, update to 6.1.1.
next day the touch screen stopped working next. can't even answer a phone call. phone is fried. that was after upgrading. beginning to doubt htc as a phone maker. went through several g1's. my nexus has screen issues, now this. not a fan of motorola's phones. and samsung sucks too. well, she's due for an upgrade, just at a loss as to what she's going to get now. thanks for trying to offer help though

Haha, same here. I received a used g1 from a friend, I was its fifth owner I think, it had no issues, I ended up accidentally breaking it because I fell asleep on a recliner chair and it fell out of my pocket into the recliner mechanism and got its chin crushed. Poor thing. I took it apart and wiggled the bent connector a little bit, and it actually worked for a few more months, although fragile. Now it won't turn on anymore though, totally done. It lived a long life though.
Now I'm using the same friend's old slide, which he spilled a full glass of lemonade on. It didn't work for a week, then randomly started booting, so he gave it to me since he had already gotten a vibrant. The only thing that doesn't work on it is the camera, which I couldn't care less about.
HTC phones have been great for me, you must be treating your phones like they are $40 dumbphones made by nokia.
lol! no, that would be my son who treats his g1 like a hacky sack. it's my wife who's having all the bad luck. i may try taking it apart and seeing what i can do but believe me she pretty much uses her phone as a phone and to facebook. otherwise it sits in her purse. although she has gotten into angry birds lately and i do see her getting frustrated more & more.....
You bought a second hand phone that is now failing and you're blaming the manufacturer? It sounds like to me the previous owner may not have foreclosed some previous "incident" happening to the phone.

I realize I'm arriving a little late to this conversation but Im wondering if you ever figured anything out with this? My phone did the exact same thing this last weekend and after completely tearing it apart and cleaning all the connections I could, with not fix, I finally gave up and bought a G2. If you do have any ideas it would be awesome!
Same thing happened to me, I have a thread in the general section, I'm on my fifth slide

One of the Cyanogen Mod nightlies was very unresponsive on touch and a few other things.
You can try a more stable cyanogen rom, and see if that makes a difference.
Its not that. The slide isnt just unresponsive, its not working at all. I wiped it all to start over and try a stable but now I cant get past the start up screen where you have to tap the android haha. I bought a G2 so if I fix it, it would just be to sell or as a backup. Anyone know anyone that wants to buy it?
Alright so im making this thread to ask if anyone is interested in a tutorial that tells you how to get rid of the squeakiness of the back on the incredible, and give it a more solid feel without messing with the digitizer. I remember reading some people having problems from the pressure from tape in the casing, which would mess up or cause there digitizer to go funky (like it would type in certain places or type something else or it wouldn't respond in certain areas to touch)
im just asking first so i don't go in depth and all that for nothing and its like 12 am and i need some sleep for tonight.

Alright then give me some time to get to a laptop so I can have some decent typeing speed and so I don't have to use the android browser on xda, and I will get right on it, might be later though but I promise I will get it up by tommarow, hopefully it doesn't slip my mind or I will look like an idiot but I will try my best to remember at the moment I must visit best buy to get my headphones replaced, left ear piece went out.
Ok then. I can find the post I put up. I guess I have to write it again then ok I will have to later after school then
Oh wait nvm its in the wrong thread I can't fix this right now though
I cant understand why a 200 dollar phone has such horrible signal strength. I have stock rom gb ( i am rooted though) running on my incredible 2, and my db level is always between -90 to -102 showing 1 bar or none while my wifes droid x shows -72db to -70 at all times all over our house and everywhere we go. It gets even worse when I put a silicone case from verizon on it. Is there anything I can do"? I had a thunderbolt that had slightly better signal but this is ridiculous, anyone else experiencing this?
I think if this continues , I might not have a choice but to trade this phone for something else. I would really like to keep this though so any suggestions would really be appreciated thanks
Unless the devices were calibrated on the same equipment, you can't rely on the accuracy of their signal strength measurements.
Are you having any REAL problems or do you just not like what your phone displays and perceive a problem? Mine shows between -80 and -100 usually and I get great call and data performance out of it.
Try going into settings-calls-then network. I changed from global to cdma and it seemed to help. Ymmv

Try a different back cover. The antenna is in that. May have a bad cover. Mine came with two and one of them gave me better signal than the other. Take it to verizon, they should switch it out for free. Mine gets awesome signal everywere.

that's really interestiing.
Can anyone confirm or have you tried factory reset after GB? On Froyo I had decent/good signal, but after GB it's been horrible. I am steady with 1-2 bars even in areas I used to get full bars and my dBm is around 90-102. My battery has seriously been crap since and I keep hearing and have been told by HTC/Verizon to do a factory reset to fix it but I don't know if I want to. Just curious if anyone has done it.

that is correct. the antenna is in the back cover. try removing the back cover and watch as it loses signal completely. to make things worse though, it seems the antenna is focused at the bottom of the case.. so similiar issue to what the iphone 4 was having.
i wonder if there's small booster antennas you could stick on to the phone somewhere(sure sounds like nonsense but i'd give it a try).

yeah of course they are going to tell you that b.s. just like if you go to the geek squad with a pc problem and they'll say "oh you need to reinstall windows".
i just know if you did a reset it wouldn't fix anything.

Yea, it's the answer to solve anything just like Windows "Reboot the machine" fix.
I don't think I'll do a reset but it'd be nice to know if this will be addressed or if there's a manual fix we can do.
ok, for the hell of it i decided to buy this "cell phone signal booster"

that's how desperate i am...
i used to have these 'radiation blocker' stickers i put on my old moto razr. doubt they did anything either but my old job was throwing them away so thought 'why not'.
Mine is horrible as well. Just got the phone 2 weeks ago b4 unl. data went bye bye. My old samsung rogue got amazing reception but this doesnt. I have not dropped a call yet though so maybe the reception bar is just a "dummy" graphic?
No difference from froyo to gb either

This signal bar is definitely conservative. I've set the phone exactly next to my Galaxy Tab, both showing signal strength within 2 db of one another. The DInc2 showed 0 bars while the Galaxy Tab showed 2.
I know the extended battery with back cover gives me better reception then my standard cover. My phone loses signal, drops calls and isnt able to send texts or make calls sometimes while my wifes phone is able to and the wifi has been losing signal as well. On craigslist it goes
very interesting to know that the antenna is on the actual battery cover. i removed my cover and i wasnt able to see it (i assume it is built into the mold?)

Why do you think the cell phone signal booster is junk? Actually, I have got quite a good one which boost the signal at my apartment immensely. maybe you can go to their site and take a look. Their site is jammerall.com , hope I can be of help.

What I called junk was not a signal booster. It was a sticker to be placed in the battery compartment purported to boost signal when it does nothing at all. They use to be very expensive ($20-$50) until it was proven they didn't work, then the price dropped ($1-free).
Real signal boosters (pieces of hardware which will actively boost/relay a signal) actually do something to boost signal, and they really work. They also tend to not be cheap.

Different from other electronics, cell phones have become the necessity of every one's daily life. If someone still has no idea of mobile phones, you must say that "Out!" of course except the senior citizens. To be honest, cell phones really bring us lots of benefits. We use it for talking, sending and playing. With it, our life can be modern one, without it, we will be live in the Mars, you know, know nothing about each other. But do cell phones have no disadvantages? Of course not, more and more people are using cell phones at the cost of other interests. Noises are everywhere, especially the one of mobile phones. What should we do, throw them away? It is a stupid behavior. Have you ever heard cell phone signal booster? It is a new kind of device to solve this problem, effective in blocking the signals of your cell phone and its nearby base station. one side, the mobile phone really benefits us a lot, but another side we also benefit from its noises for a long time, so the fight between the cell phone and cell phone jammer has been a hot topic in society now. Which side you stand by, jamming or not, it depends on you.

Have you read the dates on the previous posts? Last year, August.
I've been having an issue with my softkeys (settings, home, etc...). They will randomly press opening settings, going back and opening the recent apps. Usually it does a combination of all of them and the only way to fix it is to turn off the screen and turn it back on.
I first thought this was a rom problem and switched to a new one. This didn't help so I believe it has to do with hardware. I looked up online and people say that it is a screen or battery problem. So I flashed to stock ICS and brought it into sprint, the guy was nice and stuff but he said he couldn't do anything unless we could make it happen. It wouldn't do it, so he couldn't do anything about it.
I'm wondering if it actually is a software issue or something that I'd be able to fix myself. Has anyone had any problems like this? It's not too often but often enough to be annoying. Any help would be nice.
Thanks in advance
I've heard pepper have issues with soft keys in low signal areas but never heard of that issue.. When you left the store did you have the problem on stock ics still

I have the issue of menus open and close in all apps and from home screen in low to no signal areas. Some times making the phone unusable. If I turn mobile data off seems to cure the random menu opening issue... Becomes 1/2 a phone... No data and 10 a month for... What oh ya high speeds data... Used to get 10 Meg download on 4G until a couple months ago.. Now only getting 700K, I think the Sprint tower near my house was stolen lol is that a word? FI27 is out, might help. My phone has been flagged for liquid damage so hard to find out if it's a hardware problem causing the menu issues. My upgrade isn't until May so I will make the most till then. NOTE 2? Little Rant in your thread OP... Sorry

I don't mind the rant
I think it may have something to do with signal however. I was at work today and I got a bunch of random presses again. There was a good sized storm and I only had a bar or two. I'm also still wondering if it is software but I cant even stand to use stock ICS to see if it happens, if I couldn't use custom roms I don't think I would even own an android phone.
I was at the gym last night... 1 to no bars, menus and soft keys started poping like crazy... Turned off mobile networks.. 3G data and not one more Phantom menu press... If I wasn't so lazy I would use a custom prl and roam control... Bet that would cure my low signal areas. I will test that theory soon.
I had same menu action when I Odin stock el29 GB, with all modems I flashed

I was experiencing the same problem on Gamer Mod. Even reflashed after fully wiping everything and still had it happening... was using apex launcher...but never happened to me before. Anyway wiped again and flashed back to blue kuban and its gone.
Shame because I really liked gamer mod.

I don't see how a network can cause an issue like this though.
Also, I've tried wiping and flashing multiple roms on everything from GB to JB and still the same thing.
It is a low signal issue. The end. Only solution.. Get it replaced. My co worker had it. So I had first hand experience with it.

When I brought it in he said he can only do something if we could duplicate the problem. Should I call Sprints call center and see what they can do? Would they already know about the problem or are they going to pretend like they've never had an issue like it. Do I have to flash back to stock ICS or do they not care? Sorry about the questions, I'm just pretty new to having my own phone plan and my own problems and don't really know how to deal with them yet.

You have to unroot the phone or they will say the rooting its causing this problem or even worse they will say it's big no no to root phones and they will invalidated your warranty, show them this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKG-iq4XezU so they get an idea what the problem is
That is really odd, hadn't heard of that before. I instantly thought hardware, but it sounds like it has been proven otherwise. Is your device under warranty? If so, could be worth the hassle of a replacement, otherwise sprint call center is pretty worthless in general. They will give you pre made responses and tell you they were not aware of any such issue unless you get someone who actually gives any kind of a crap haha. Good luck! Be sure to post any updates!

The only way to duplicate the problem everytime on my phone is to go to a low signal area. Ask the Sprint tech to go with you maybe buy them a cup of coffee and a donut.

Ok, before I call in I have one last question. Will they send me a loaner phone? I need my phone for work and what not so if I cant get something temporary then I'm not even going to be able to send it in.
Not sure if this will answer your question but a co-worker recently had to take his OG EVO in for service. They gave him a loaner phone, an EVO 3D.
My wife's E4GT had the same phantom soft key issue. It was recently replaced due to another unrelated issue and so far, no issues.
Sent using my HTC EVO 4G and a magic wand
Very last question, I promise. Should I call Sprint or call Samsung directly? I'm most likely going to try and get it replaced this weekend. Hoping that everything goes well.
Short of a sledge hammer or selling the phone is there any remedy?
Phantom keys were crazy on my phone yesterday. I hadn't seen the problem very much in a week or so. I have no idea what was going on, but cleared dalvik cache and that seemed to help. No problems with it today. I wish I could figure out a correlation besides poor signal.
jezz... i see people on this forum saying that they can make their phone can do everything but jerk them off...hell some one may even have an app for that...but i just want some help on repairing the antenna on my R800x i am getting no signal what so ever and it is absolutely a hardware issue....please smart guys help me out... this is the only reason i joined xda...
As I realize you want to get your phone working, there is no need to create three threads in two different forums. Also, you may want to ask a little nicer.
Anyways... if you thinks its the Cell signal antenna here is a photo in this link that tells you what aspect of the phone the antenna is. If it is the antenna your best bet would be to buy a back cover replacement from say eBay. I bought a couple in the past for around 5-10 bucks and your Wifi, Bluetooth, and cell antenna's are in there.

Just do a search for Xperia PLAY back.... then search for the photo of the image above
seriously though, if you feel it is your antenna broken, just snag a replacement back and see if that resolves it... its super easy to swap out. I have done if three time.

No worries. I am sure everyone here has at least once been in a bind where they were freaking out and wanted a solution fast. I really would recommend you look at buying a new back for your play. They all worm the same so no need to look for a r800x back.
Good luck and if replacing the back sizes it please reply back to this thread. So that if others have a similar issue they can use this thread as a answer. Good luck.
