Only have one window open and my internet seems to be draining alot of memory and cpu usage and setting of my watchdog. How do i stop it? Recently cleared all the cache and cookies.
I would also like to know if I find anything out I'll let you know but in the mean time I think it depends on what you are viewing like facebook is an extremely large site with a lot of traffic.

Swyped from Eva running Myn's RLS4!
are you positive it is your internet. many process and apss run in the background so just because you only have internet open at the moment does not mean it is the internet for sure causing the problem.
what watchdog message is comign up when it goes off?
What browser are you using
are you using 3g or 4g
do you always have mobile data (3g or 4g depending on what you are using when the drain is happening) on?
Do yo have a process monitering app such as system panel?
I am going to assume you ahvent gone to that detail yet. I highly recommend getting the paid verion of system moniter if you are having this kind of issue as it lets you run a history of the top apps using cpu/power. it also lets you see a nice battey graph and shows you all process running wether they are active or inactive and how much cpu time they are using.
It makes diagnosing these kinds of problems much easier.
Stop using the internet. This should solve the problem.
Seriously though. Browsing the web with your EVO does all the things that suck the most battery. Graphics, 3G, 4G, Wifi.

It happens in both 3g and 4g. Watch dog pops up and says internet usage is at 71% would u like to close it? I say yes.
I have systsm panel lite...sometimes it works but alot of time it doesnt. Your most common apps just reopen up it seems like. Thank you for your help.

Ahhh this is the answer i was looking for ( fart noise ). Pay$ 40 extra a month for internet usage and to be told not to use it. Thats like buying toilet paper and never wiping your ass.

So I've noticed on the evo that lots of apps like to run in the background and some of them keep a constant network connection causing horrible battery drain. anyone else notice this? no im not on 4g because its not available in los angeles yet. but i do know that the phones idle time sucks. So far I noticed the htc widget downloader likes to keep running
i reread this a couple times and have yet to figure out what you're asking. are you asking something? either way, you really didn't say much.
haha this is a redundant thread.
im just trying to figure out whats causing it to keep a constant network connection...when i go into spare parts it shows network usage at 100% for some app called "0" just seeing if anyone else has noticed this. there was a question you probably missed.
I don't have the phone yet. But it might be a processes that is watching, talking to, or protecting ring 0 which is the highest level of the security state in processor and operating system. See:

according to the app spare parts there is a process called "0" that takes up all of the network usage but I can not figure out where it is or what it is, maybe this is it but why would it take network usage? i mean i constantly see my 3g signal working non-stop

Hi there!
Just as the title says. I've been having this issue where, at seemingly random points in time, I'll burn through 20mb of 3G data usage. This is a huge problem considering my monthly cap is 150mb.
Anyone know of an app that will track down *exactly* what is using this data? I'm using PhoneUsage, and the only indication I have is a vague pie chart which says "Settings" is doing it. I've dug around everywhere in the menu but cannot find what could be causing this (turned off auto-sync, for example).
Or, if anyone has had this issue, could they direct me to the correct menu in "Settings"? Currently I'm using CM 6.1 RC2, if anyone knows off-hand.
Thanks!
I just got a widget from the market.......traffic control.........looks like it might be what you are after.
3G watchdog isn't bad either, gives you an on screen widget, or if you didn't get rid of it the My Verizon App gives you an on screen widget as well.
Oh also forgot, I use Pageonce a lot for all my online banking, student loans etc. But it has a section for utilities and I put my My Verizon credentials in there and it not only gives me my bill but also breaks down all my usage mins/txts/data and billing cycle date.
Thanks everyone!

+1 on the nightwish username. Pageonce is by far my favorite Android app ever. Also, check out Juice Defender. That one totally disables 3G whenever certain parameters are met, i.e. screens off etc. That would probably be your best ally against that 150mb limit.
Is anyone still working on fixing the "0" network bug (as seen in Spare Parts) that is draining some of us of our precious battery?
That bug was in the Moment also, no one ever fixed it or could tell what it really was, there was another one also, either 0 would be there or the other...

It's not a bug. A bunch of smaller services are all grouped into that. Pretty much anytime your phone uses 3G it gets grouped into that service. That is why if you try to view it in Spare Parts you get an FC. Most services have stopped running and it can't make a proper list. If you have Wifi available, switch it on and watch 0 drop.

The bug has already been marked as something along the lines of being any root app or setting being grouped into that single UID. Im not sure if that goes the same for the Moment but thats the best someone has described it as for the Epic.

I know it has been described as that but it IS a bug if its draining battery using the Network when it shouldnt AND its not happening to everyone. The smaller services are any root apps or settings you may have, which shouldnt be taking up more Network time than something that is more of a data user such as Facebook or YouTube.
Oh, and Ive had Wifi on for hours day after day and its still there.

What makes you think it is draining the battery? There is no way to tell how long it runs for and what services are in it? It is highest in my network usage until I ran email for a few minutes and that was higher. My battery is amazing, so it is not a battery drainer. It is just a bunch of unknown services that are not named.

All those services are using a bit of battery which amounts to a total of more than any other app that uses data that I have. If it wasnt draining battery it wouldnt be at the top and reduce the battery of whoever is affected by it from what Ive seen. It may not be affecting you but it IS a known case out there from what Ive seen in EVERY ROM thread.

If it's at the top of the list under "Network usage", that is not an issue. Pretty much any rooted kernel will display this process "0'" as the highest network user. Now if the bar is solid red, and your "Running" percentage is near or at 100%, then you have a problem. As long as it's not causing a wakelock, there is no cause for alarm.

Again, you have NO IDEA how long they are running...it could be 2 minutes. It is just the most used of your network. Lots of things on your Epic use network services but are not listed...because they are lumped into the 0 service. As Matt pointed out, if it is not red, it is not running constantly. Just because you don't know what something is doesn't make it a bug. This is doing exactly what Google meant for it to do, lump unknown (to the OS) network calls into a single UID. TWS was a real bug because it didn't matter whether you had signal or not, it was always 50%. Kswapd0 is a real bug because it is using CPU.
I have been asking this on Sprint forums for a while, I searched here and didn't really see this issue. It's a pretty concerning issue for me and I'm wondering if it's common because I know it would bother everyone.
My first post was basically saying I wasn't receiving push notifications, after doing some testing I posted this.
Copy/Paste from Sprint forums:
As a follow up:
I have noticed that the data doesn't come through the the 4g is idle.(Zzz)
I tested it with two applications:
Whatsapp, have a friend send me a message with 4g active, message came through. I had the same friend send me one with 4g in idle mode and the message does not come through at all, even if I browse the internet and make 4g idle again, the message will only come through after I open whatsapp again.
Beejive and eBuddy messanging apps: I opened my own account and tested from my PC with the same scenarios as before, I get the same results.
It seems my phone is losing a data connection all together when 4g goes into idle, now this can't be right can it?
Looks like the NS has the same issue:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/70874
This can't be right can it? I mean completely shut off my phones data connection when the 4g radio is sleeping? How does this make sense..
Anyone?

Kinda ... I believe it still works in the background for any app that might need internet connectivity. The time out sucks cause is so short but it is done, I believe, for the purpose of saving battery, like if no app is in need of data then it shuts down. Also, there are codes to make this time-out take longer to kick in, somewhere buried in these threads.
Thanks for the reply. Yea I saw some options, but raising the time out would probably kill my battery.
For now keeping on 3g seems to be my best bet..

Usually when a radio goes to sleep there is something called a rx interrupt that will wake it up when there is a packet received. This is based on my limited experience working with radios as an electrical engineering student. I don't know. how the specific wimax radio in this phone works.

Not sure how it works, but in honesty its very frustrating, the fact that it isn't a bigger deal on here makes me think it doesn't happen to all?

I hate to bump this again, but are the views people that don't have this issue at all?
I feel like this is a deal breaker
I get this all the time. When driving, I like to listen to shoutcast stations.
If I lose signal for more than like 10 seconds, the 4G idles and never reconnects unless I either toggle 4g off/on or tap a shoutcast station to wake the 4g back on. The 3G struggles to reconnect to the station usually and times out.
It is pretty irritating. My best friend always teases me for getting an android phone over his iPhone 4S PO$ on AT&T. lol

I'm keeping it on 3g right now, that should give you the same speeds of his 4s. I'll turn on 4g when I know I need it. So far 3g hasn't been slow enough for me to even have to turn it on.
I like this phone a lot and considered returning it but there isn't a phone as powerful so I decided to deal with it for now.
I went to sprint but the tech wasn't there, the counter guy tried to tell me it's the same with any 4g phone but I really don't think so. I think people would get rly pissy if messages didn't come in for hours.
I'm going to see the tech and test it with another 4g phone, if it doesn't happen I'll ask him to open a ticket and MAYBE that'll get something done.
there are a few tweaks that you can do in the epst menu that help out with the 4g connection going dormant. let me see if i can find the thread
I looked into setting the "sleep" time to 300 seconds, haven't done it yet but I'd be worried about it sucking my battery too fast.
I just feel it should work in sleep mode and I want to see what other sprint 4g phones do, if it's only with this phone I want to at least try to get it up to Sprint as a bug(event though most likely nothing will happen.
Someone on El13 said they didn't get this behavior in another thread.. I've tested it on stock EG30 and Ek20
Okay, so I'm not crazy. I thought I noticed this on both my OG Epic and the Touch. Mostly for me it manifests in not getting push notifications while on 4G in idle. That's been my main complaint with it. So I mostly don't use it, although I'm rarely anywhere with 4G anyway, so it's irrelevant.

I have not tried gtalk but I think it would have the same issue.
I have tried and all of them fail with the same issue:
Whatsapp
Gmail app (I don't use Samsungs stock email)
Beejive messenger
ebuddy messenger
let me know what you find.. I just can't believe this isn't a big bug - something tells me it might be Samsung's radios.
I went ahead and changed my idle time to 300... The phone doesn't go to zzz anymore so far so that should let me stay on 4g. That should give me 5 hours of the phone not going to sleep so during a normal day I shouldn't have this issue.. Maybe when I'm sleeping I won't see my notifications I will leave it on for now..
My DL speeds with 4g are like 7-8k so that's MUCh better than 3g for me. Also we'll see about battery drain.
Yes I have this problem. I also have the same issue with leaving WIFI on all the time. Everything is delayed unless you just used the phone.

I don't think I have it on wifi. Will test tonight.
John,
Another example of 'push' is using imap with gmail account. I use both k9 and maildroid using the imap connection method. When a message arrives at the google server it should 'push' it to our phones in a short turn around time frame. I've seen this vary from immediate to 45 minutes on the server end. The usage of 'pop' of course is the 'pull' method when polling is necessary.

300 in IdleSleep is actually 5 minutes, not 5 hours (I'm pretty sure the value is in seconds).
That being said, I haven't seen any push notification issues on 4G on EG30 or EL13. I regularly get Gtalk and Gmail notifications all the time while idle on 4G. The only thing that seems slow on push notification is the built in email client. But I'm not sure if that is a client or Hotmail issue. I wonder if your issue is region specific.
From what I read it is minutes.. But that could all be wrong I guess

Saw today that mediaserver used almost 120 mb of data in the last 24 hours. If it does that every day that's almost 4 gigs in a month. Not sure if it really does happen every day since I just noticed it but that's almost as much as I used for FB, internet, and YouTube combined. I have unlimited data so that's not an issue but I could surely see how that could eat up battery. I've noticed my data usage has been extremely high but since I'm not rooted I can't dig deeper into the issue.
Just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same?
Something seems wrong. I just checked mine..under battery settings, I have used 384bytes.... practically nothing.

Strange. Didn't use any data all day until I watched a few videos, thought it had something to do with Hulu or Break.com, haven't used any other media and again, it's another 100 mb today. WTF?
You might have an app that is staying on in the background. I would try a back-up, master reset, then slowly install the apps...you might find the bad app...??

Only idea is maybe it has to do with wife tethering? Seems like the same amount of data.
Perhaps you have a media player that's trying to download album art or something...?

My syncs are a very short list. 100mb a day for album art? I doubt it, haven't added anything in months. Google+ isn't set for automatic uploads. I do that manually.
Only thing I can imagine is that it is from wifi tethering but from any search I've done I can't see any links to that. I'm not as much of a pro as most people around here but I'm pretty sure my google-fu is working ok. It has to have something to do with wifi tethering cause it only shows up when I'm using it but I can't be for sure. That's why I asked here, hoped someone could confirm my suspicions but no one has yet.
I still don't understand how when I look in settings>data usage it's showing 15 gigs of usage when I haven't used my 3gig limit? Admittedly I have not been able to use wifi this month since I haven't been at home for most of it but still can't see how my data usage has quardrupled. Again, I have unlimited data so that's not a worry for me but it has to be giving my battery life a hit.
