If anyone could upload their sms client that's running froyo that'd be cool. I liked the new look of it versus eclair, but i'm still using eclair for performance reasons.
Thanks.
I agree i'd go back to running eclair if the SMS app had the bubble chat

It don't think so either, I'm not sure this is possible without some heavy reworking.
I only ran Froyo for about an hour, and never tried the SMS app it came with. Is it really so much better than using Handcent?
I believe the Vibrant has it, and it uses 2.1. Dont know about compatibility though. Worth trying though

in the market and get "handcent"? will this not get your bubble on?
Echo echo echo...I said the same thing in post 5. My biggest complaint is that I keep having issues in general w/ getting MMS texts. I've still got the stock Messaging app installed, so it can't be Handcent's fault....I hated dealing w/ this on my Moment, and now I'm still dealing w/ it on my Epic.

I'm glad someone else has this issue, not to hijack this thread but I will say I had problems receiving texts as well and so I switched to handcent. This did nothing to fix the problem, so I assume it is in the way the system, either designed by Sprint or Samsung, handles mms messages. My experience has been overall patchiness, sometimes receiving texts, sometimes not. On multiple occassions, I have gotten texts that were around 3 hours late, which is a bit of a nuissance lol. Froyo has only partially fixed this, but it could be a multitude of problems. Could be Mms.apk, could be the phone, the network, the individual towers, the location in relation to the towers (I live inside some pretty thick walls, so signal is a bit spotty), or any number of other problems. I can live with it, it's just an example of poor quality. And based off of the fact that you are the only person I have ever come across with this issue, I don't think it is widespread.
Now, back to the bubble messaging app lol. There is some serious code difference between the 2.1 app an the 2.2 app, so porting is a bit out of the question. Maybe it would be possible to find a 2.1 bubble style messaging app, perhaps like the ones above for other SGS phones, and port it that way but it would still take a lot of work. Your best bet is handcent for now, it works very well and is regarded as the best stock mms app replacement, I have known other people who fully prefer it over stock. I'll keep looking around to see if I can get it working, but it is much easier to go from 2.1 to 2.2 rather than the other way around lol.

It's more widespread than you think...Google "Epic not receiving MMS", I found countless threads on othere forums, phones, etc. There is a thread on here about it, but it's got nothing in regards to a solution. I don't blame the towers because I know for a fact that I haven't missed a single one on my Treo for the years that I've had it as a second line.

I posted this in NilsP's Business GingerSense thread, but don't think it's a ROM issue, more of a Google Talk issue. Running the 2.0 version of that ROM.
The issue is where Google Talk shows all your contacts as Offline after a period of say five to ten minutes, maybe shorter than that. I'll be messaging someone, and after a few minutes when they haven't responded, I'll wake my phone and open GT. All the contacts are Offline. A simple sign out/sign in fixes that, and the usual contacts show Online or Away.I've noticed this all week, so I'm thinking it's a GT issue, but I've never had it happen before.
Don't want to have to sign out/in every time I want to use it. Cleared GT cache, fix permissions, multiple wipes of data/system/cache/boot/dalvik/user data before each ROM install, and haven't had this before now.
Thoughts?
EDIT: After playing, it happens when switching from 3G to WiFi and vice versa, so maybe it is a ROM thing...?
i'm having the same issue. noticed after my gingerbread OTA update from verizon.
Droid 2.
It seems to happen a few minutes after logging on.
I also have that issue with Gtalk. After some time all contacts appear to be offline, but only when I'm on data connection and not on wifi.
There is still no solution for this?
Cheers!

Me too. Anyone was able to do something?
Well I've since moved on, and haven't noticed it on other ROMs. Right now I just tested toggling Wifi on and off, and the contacts would appear offline, then come online once 3g or wifi connected.
I'm thinking in my case, it was that version of the ROM I was running at the time.

Just a thought, check any task killers / managers and make sure talk is unchecked. I had the same problem a long time ago and ATK was the culprit. Haven't had the issue since and I have used almost every Rom possible at one point or another

True. Right after I rooted over a year ago, I had an issue with the alarm clock not going off intermittantly, and coincidentally I was using ATK at the time. After reading that ATK could be the issue, uninstalling it fixed the issue. Since then, I don't actively kill tasks, but I do have System Panel installed just in case.
I'm running Stock+ v2.6, and since moving on from v2.0 of NilsP's ROM where I had the initial issue, I haven't noticed/had the problem.

Hi,
Me and the other user are I9000 users. No task killers. We're trying to figure out if its a stock / custom ROM issue (since we're both using the same ROM), or some app forcing GTalk to sign out, or even a network problem (we both use the same mobile operator).
Thank you both for your input.
If you're on a stock ROM (you're both rooted right?), back up your ROM and flash another just to see if it happens in something different.

Yes, we are.
The thing is that it seems to me that it happened only after XXVJR (meaning it happened to me in XXJVS and XXJVT, and now we're already at XWJVU, all these being Samsungs "leaks"), and I have a friend with XXJVS that works just fine.
I even tried flashing a stock ROM, to see if it happens again. Testing that one now.
Thanks for your advice.
Same problem here.
Although I have not tried it with stock non rooted phone...
I'm having the same problem on a stock rooted Motorola Photon. Very annoying to have to sign out and back in to see who's online. Hopefully someone comes to the rescue with a solution.
Hi,
The only thing I could find is that the problem is, indeed, NOT in the custom ROM's. It's google's problem.
The only way I could get by was with an alternative IM. And, for me, the better is Trillian (taking battery, performance, etc. in consideration.)
I updated my software which included an updated gtalk with video..so far so good.

I am having this issue too. I have had it since the beginning, when I had the preinstalled stock rom, I had it with all the other stock roms I flashed, I had it with all the versions of Talk I tried (those which supported video calls), I had it with all the other customs roms I tried (Simplicity, CyanogenMod, MIUI). I never used any task killer. For these reasons I am strongly convinced this is a Google Talk related bug.
Some more details about the problem:
after a few minutes after having logged in, contacts are shown offline on Android while they appear online on the desktop client;
despite their offline status I still receive messages from them and as soon as I answer only that contact appears online while the others keep being shown offline;
signing out and back in fixes the problem temporarily, but it happens again after a few minutes.
What surprises me is how come very few people seem noticing it or being annoyed by it? How come a huge bug like this has been out for so long and Google hasn't fixed it yet? All the posts I have seen reporting this problem on Google Talk Help Forum have been ignored.
Exact same problem with my I9100, Gtalk with video. Very annoying.
I have the SGS i777 (Samsung Galaxy S2 on AT&T), and just recently (since late February) started experiencing the same issue. When on WiFi, it doesn't appear to be an issue, only when not on WiFi, particularly if I have just recently turned off WiFi.
Other "friends" show me as "Away", so I am connected.
This is bone stock 2.3.6 Samsung official ROM (never rooted UCKK6).
I tried crawling a bit through the logs (aLogCat output), filtering for "[Tt]alk", but I can't make enough heads or tails about where the failure might be (not being an actual developer), other than lots of messages get created. I'll see if I can't figure something more useful out about it.
A hard reset with no apps installed has the same problem. Though I've noticed that the problem appears to get "worse" as the phone "ages" - namely, hard reset fixes the problem, but it slowly (over days) gets worse and worse.
Update: I have not noticed this issue at all since getting the official Samsung/AT&T ICS build (IML74K.CLE5).
Google Talk failing for toooo loooong

I'm a cyanogen 7.1 (stable) android user, and I just want to join myself to every other person who's affected by this issue.
I'll leave here some links to other places discussion exactly the same issue:

You may check this thread: groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!topic/chat/6m0YqHoiIDg
Until now, I wasn't also able to find any clue to what the cause may be.
Starting to suspect that's something on Google's side, not android/rom itself.
Maybe something to do with our google accounts' settings?
Are there any news about this issue? I'm having the same problem.
I've been with the EVO 4g and the EVO 3D and now the SG3. at my job i've never had a problem sending a text until I got the SG3, using the orginal rom or custome rom, they are do the same. I will send a text and alot of times it doesn't go through and I have to keep sending until it goes through, every now and again while sending a text, all my text will disappear and it will tell me by text box is empty. I will then have to reboot to restore all of my text.
right now i'm running Sonic FreeGS3 0.7 with LF9.
If there's a thread about this that I might have missed, feel free to point me in that direction as well.

What kind of signal coverage do you get at your work? Also have u been doing any data wipes with your rom flashing?
I don't have a fix for the stock app, but I can offer you an alternative -
Google Voice can replace the stock messaging app. It's main feature is that it sends texts over WiFi/data so you recieve/send texts faster, especially in an area with good WiFi but bad cell coverage like an office building.
Yes, having this issue today, signal keeps going in and out in Dallas Downtown area.
Glad I am not depending on my data connection right now.
before my signal was 4 sometimes 5 bars with the EVO's the SGS3 I will be lucky to get 2 bars, mostly 1 to sometimes 0 . even though I set at my same desk every day, Nothing has changed besides my phone.
yousefak I will try that again, I think I tried that back in the day.
I came from a nexus 4g and it did it every once in a while, but with the s3 its like ever other text, you can't even get a conversation going because that text errors out and you hit retry like 5 times for it to go through, signal is normal as usual.
This is the only complaint with the phone.
Weird, I haven't had any trouble with text messages so far with the stock app. I have a feeling that many of these issues might be related to the on-going Network Vision work, but it really depends on your area. It could be the phone, but I'm not convinced that it is.
Network Vision upgrades can cause this.
i've had this problem since last month, i'm pretty sure its a network thing, just gotten worst with the s3, co worker has iphone on sprint and it goes through instantly.

Does that still apply if you're not using the Google Voice app to send texts? I'm using GO SMS Pro, but have GVoice intregrated with my account. Didn't know if that was ever the case or not.
And in agreement with the others, very possibly a NV issue...I was going through this a few weeks back here in the burbs of Chicago.
I had this a few times where reception was poor. I typically exited the messaging app immediately after hitting send and this would cause it I think, and now I wait until it actually sends before exiting. Haven't had a dropped text since then.
I have the same problem alot with this phone. I have had it for two weeks now and more often than not text fails to send. I have full signal too. Tower is less than a 1000 feet behind my work. Don't really know why it does this but it get pretty bad sometimes. Very hab to keep texting back and forth sometimes. Sometimes the wife is like HELLLO! Where did you go lol.

This would be nice but you can't send mms on Google voice.
Just an update, i was texting at home last night and all my text went through instantly with no problems. I guess it really depends on where you are at and the sprint tower you are connected to.
dapretendr, same here, works when i'm not at my job, but even at home where 98% of the time it works, I do have about 1-2% where it makes me retry.
I expect it to get better once LTE is turned on here in philly, but I don't think we should have to rely on LTE to get text to work better. This is the 1 downside I've heard on different forums though about samsung, they make 1 of the best phone but the Radio for the signals lack.
Hi folks,
Sometimes I can't receive picture messages and I can never send them to my wife's telus phone. They show up as white squares with no text included. Anybody had this or can provide suggestions? I have tried many things so far. Full story below...
Thanks
**************************
I have a Telus T989/ S2X. I have had it for 1.5 yrs and have flashed numerous ROMS since I rooted it about a year ago. Over this time I have had MMS issues on and off.
From early ICS ROMS (darkside) and now to Jelly Bean roms (CM10 nightly, Jedi Jelly, Slim-Star...and more) I have had a strange issue. I can send picture messages to almost everyone and receive from almost everyone. Occasionally I have an issue receiving from friends on the Rogers/ Fido network and it stalls at 'downloading'. I tried unchecking auto-retrieve and it does not fix it. I have also tried multiple radios on multiple roms.
More recently my msgs cannot be viewed when I send them to my wife's phone ( I know, a blessing sometimes right?). She is on the same network (Telus) and has no problem sending/ receiving from anyone. When I send to her it shows as a white/ blank square and none of the text I typed shows up. Regular text are no problem ever.
I called Telus support and they ran me through checking the APN settings and a bunch of other tests sending pics back and forth and no fix. They are going to escalate the problem. I tried the trick of sending yourself a picture via gmail too without any luck. I didn't tell them I was rooted and on 4.1.2....but I have tried tons of diff roms and done a bunch of searching on the forums and google.
Just today I tried the Koodo 4.0.4 rooted ROM with no luck. Then I got pissed off and backed everything up and rolled back to the Telus 2.3.5 Gingerbread ROM. Guess what? MMS worked just fine!!?? I double checked the APN settings and they were identical.
So....has anyone else had this issue? I don't want to be stuck on Gingerbread just to use MMS. Could it be that the newer versions of the MMS/ SMS have issues? I noticed that when I went back to 2.3.5 it said "converting to MMS" when I attached a pic. I never see that in any other ROM.
Any suggestions or solutions that people have come across? I am slightly frustrated....especially since my wife's Nexus S has no problems and my S2X is way better but failing.
Thanks for your time and thoughts folks!

maybe u were send pics that were larger than the network supports. Hypothetically telus may only support 5meg attachments while Rogers/Fido does 10 ( I think this is actually the case but I'm not 100% sure). Use a third party app like hand cent or gosms that supports MMS compression and see how u fair

It seems like some are getting through with Handcent. So the stock app in CM10 is not working then? I should try different size files maybe to see if that is a factor like you said.
Intro:
I have the Samsung Epic 4G. Great phone, running into problems. I originally started out rooted and modded with the CyanogenMOD 10 Nightly. Everything was going great and I love the mod but I started getting MMS problems where I couldn't see the pictures being sent or the ones I was sending. There was an easily located temporary fix found online to delete the telephony file and restart the phone. No biggie I can deal. Then bigger problems started arising as I was no longer getting all of my text messages. Sometimes none. I contacted Sprint and they ran through the whole ordeal of giving me some codes to input which of corse wouldn't work on the MOD and I couldn't update the profile so they said they'd check the tower where I was located and turned out nothing was wrong with it.... My wife and I are having a baby so being unable to contact her without calling constantly is a no go.
Main:
I flashed the stock for the SPH-D700 and all of my problems were fixed. This is a no bueno for me because it's full of bloatware and the phone without modification dies before my workday is out practically, even without heavy usage (and forget heavy usage because that was like shooting the battery into the sun and who the hell wants a smart phone that works for only like an hour?). After looking around I located the stock FC09 Deodexed MTD which comes with ShadowKernel (aweeeesome!) and flashed that. Didn't have any issues and all my texts were coming and going through. This was tested at work using a series of seperate sequential alphanumeric texts and all was good. I installed the usual suspects, Voltage Control, Juice Defender, SD Maid, ES Explorer, the WiFi hack, etc... Not being a fan of the stock messaging app I also downloaded the standard Chomp SMS app (which is def a step up and ad free) as well. I knocked the voltages down reasonably and tested them using Voltage control to do that and control the CPU (no overclocking). I got rid of all of the apps that the XDA Wiki said I could and backed everything up. All was well until yesterday. I charged the phone the previous night and went to work doing the normal kinda day act. I sent my wife some messages but figured she was busy when she didn't respond. Hours later I realized that she probably had responded because she never goes that long without doing so. I asked a few friends to text me and I texted myself as well and now I wasn't getting ANY texts. I did the phone dance with Sprint to no avail and they told me to take the phone to my local store. This would be the second Epic 4G that they would be replacing. The first one had this problem too but fixed itself when I flashed the stock rom. Then there was some water damage which thankfully insurance covered and I got my replacement earlier this week when I worked on modifying my phone to something I found acceptable. I think this rules out a hardware issue. On a whim I restored to a backup that I had made after getting my phone neat and tidy and some odd things happened. I started getting texts, but not the ones that I had already missed, and I was getting some later ones first before getting the first ones sent, I.E. i'd send 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and get back 5, 2, 3, 4, 1 but they would arrange themselves in the correct order onces they came. It was also taking them forever to come in as I would send them and have to wait five to ten minutes for them to come.
Conclusion:
Tired, frustrated, and somewhat perturbed I reflashed the stock rom and the problem again has fixed itself. My question is has anyone else run into this? I've looked everywhere and can't find a similar case. Am I just not seeing something that's directly in front of me? Ideally i'd really like to put Cyanogen back on but I can't afford not to be in contact with my pregnant wife. I'd also reaaaally like the WiFi cabailities that were advertised with the phone but then neglected to mention that I would have to pay 30$ extra a month for. Is this a similar issue to the MMS telephony file issue that can be resolved with perhaps a nightly deletion of a file? Is there anything I can do NOT to be on the stock rom with the worthless battery life and bloatware that chokes?????
Sincerely,

So that's a big wall-o-text. I didn't read it, and just skipped down to your conclusion. You can flash another CM based 4.2.2 rom to test SMS/MMS. It all works fine for me on Slim. If you want TouchWiz, then flash The People's ROM. This rom has no bloat and better battery life than stock. All of these roms have the Wifi access point built in.

I guess my concern is that this happened across both roms, FC09Deodexed and CM10.
Ok so no luck. Flashed CM10 and no bueno. Not getting all of the messages I send to myself. Massive delay between send and receive.
Then you're left to using Odin to get back on stock. Check auto-reboot, repartition, and f. reset time. After you are back on stock FC09, you may as well update PRL, but be sure to update profile. Test on 100% stock again.
If things work like they should on stock, then Odin in CWM without auto-reboot checked. Battery pull, then reinsert. From there boot into recovery and flash a rom of choice. Test again on newly flashed rom.
If things are not working properly on stock rom, then bring it into a Sprint store for service.
Sorry to say but all of that's been done and put in the original post (which you only speed read through the last part). I appreciate your help though. This is the second Epic 4G to do this to me on everything but the stock rom which makes me think it's not hardware but if it's not happened to anyone else then not much else I can do.

Haha, yea well it was a big wall of text.
I've burned through my ideas, lol. Good luck to ya.
Np, I really appreciate the advice. So far i've rerooted, reflashed the FC09DeodexedMTD and did a straight sprint (no lollygagging with install and uninstall of apps) to a barebones what I want system, apps include then backed up via CWM. So far it's still working great though i'll keep my fingers crossed. Should anything happen I have a backup from the getgo that should put things back to the way they were, ie. working. Stupid problem, of corse it has to only be me with it.

Hey guys,
I think I've reached the point where it's time to call in the cavalry and see if anyone around here is having the same issue; there appears to be a plague going around on the Verizon network, specifically in the Pennsylvania area, preventing people from sending SMS, but still receiving fine (and 4G works fine too, for the record). MMS still sends / receives fine, but I'm unable to send SMS. There are tricks to allowing a single SMS message to go through which involves toggling Airplane mode on / off every. Single. Time. People have also had success with turning 4G off completely, using the CDMA band after a reboot at which point they can send *several*, but still end up with the same issue.
The only solution I've read about that FIXED it is by reverting back to complete stock from VZW. Performing factory resets, using other ROMs, etc etc...doesn't work. I'd REALLY rather not do this and, frankly, would rather use 3G / toggle Airplane mode for texts than use Sense and get off of my ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560831).
People from other device forums on XDA are having the same problem; the ones I've seen that are active discussions are the Samsung Galaxy S III & IV. They're mostly CM ROMs *as well as* AOSP ROMs in general.

SIM card replacements are a no-go, and the recorded instances seem to be in the 717 / 570 area codes, mostly. Now I DO know that VZW released an OTA update for the One recently, and I'm relatively confident that would fix the issue, but I've no idea why. I'm thinking perhaps they dispatched new radios? I looked around a bit and couldn't find any flashable zips of radios extracted from the latest OTA, that's the next step I'll be trying once that download finishes.
So is anyone else having this issue? Any word on fixes?
The newest firmware from the latest OTA can be found in the 2nd post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485319
If you've already flashed the latest firmware then I'm not sure what to tell you... maybe ask your favorite rom developer to take a look at the latest OTA in regards to this issue?
If it has the stock rom and OTA update why not take it to the store and let them look at it. Something might be wrong with your account.

Those area codes for all phones on aosp roms are not working right now. Since 2/20/14. Has nothing to do with HTC or their firmware. I'ts a bizarre Verizon 4G issue. I am in the 717 area code with a Note 2 with the issue. I have seen others with S4 and S3. Verizon is aware of the issue and is working with another XDA member to fix it. To date it's not resolved.

Thanks DreamFX; I've been following this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658572&page=6) lately as they seem to be the most on top of it. I can't believe Verizon has let this issue go on for so long, but given that it seems to only be relevant to those of us with AOSP ROM's, I guess it makes sense. At least I'm still able to send texts, if not only through a silly process of toggling airplane mode on / off. Hopefully it gets resolved soon...

I'm getting this too, just started for me today from what I can tell. Driving me bonkers but, Airplane mode toggle totally works for me. :cyclops:
VZW SGS4 running AOSPA with 804 area code operating in Oregon.

Whoa, that's weird. I really thought it was isolated to the 717 area code. It's getting pretty crazy...I've been dealing with this for a few weeks now and my patience is running thin. Unfortunately it's not like we can just report this to VZW because all anyone would tell us to do is "restore to factory", which simply isn't a solution.

Yup, I thought so too. Just cropped up between 10a and 11a PDT. Like you said MMS is fine, simply affects SMS. And yes, restoring stock is simply not an option. Going to TMobile, however, is totally an option that I'm considering more and more often......
EDIT: AND SMS began sending properly (without workaround) for me around 8p PDT last night, just tested and still ok. RESOLVED!
EDIT EDIT: Issue now persists....sadface =[

IM getting it now. but not exactly the same. phone freezes without warning and I have to toggle airplane mode and restart to get it to unfreeze. this happened after the last OTA update. I am going to a custom ROM until I don't read anything about this for a while
