I have a few Android devices, and I'm trying to install some favorite apps (that I can't seem to get via Amazon Market or Google Market,) Facebook being one of those.
I was able to adb pull Facebook.apk from another tablet I have, however, it's ver 1.5.2. Tablet says that it is running 1.7.2. That means that, not only did the old app stay on the tablet after the Market updated Facebook, BUT the new app is either named differently, or installed in a completely different location (not /system/app nor SDCard - I checked.)
I was working with Redbox as well, and I simply could NOT figure out where it was installed on 2 other Android devices. It is ALSO NOT installed to the SDCard.
I can see both processes running (NOT app_xx processes, btw.) The Redbox app was com.redbox.android.activity and Facebook was com.facebook.katana.
I am seeking enlightenment!
Side-bar: I am wondering if these are NDK applications. Do NDK applications need to be re-compliled for each individual platform? Are they installed differently than SDK applications? (i.e. in different locations in the filesystem)

Use adb or Android Commander to find them here: /data/app. It is on the root file system. That's where most apps go that are installed from the Market and such.
you will preobably find the facebook app in /data/app you could also look for redbox in /data/app-private
This app will allow you to backup some of your xbox live game data to your pc. Currently it only saves 3 xbox games, it can backup and recover. It uses ISETOOL.exe which comes with the microsoft windows phone sdk. I need more Product GUIDS and names of games if you want more added. This only backups up your high scores and saved progress in games.
Current Games Supported:
Angry Birds
Plants Vs. Zombies
Need for Speed: Undercover
Zune must be running and phone cant be pin locked.
THis is running on a HTC HD7 running a custom rom, intrinsic 5.02. Im not sure if this will work on a stock phone or not.
Running backup over an existing saved game will overwrite it wit and update. Enjoy and let me know if you guys want more games, or how it workS!
The basic idea is valid, but stock ROMs can't use it. The Mango version of TouchXperience (which is what WPDM uses to browse your phone) is low-privilege and can only see a limited part of the filesystem.
It does work. but yes, it'll only work on custom roms and with wpdm, because you need it to save the files to your PC and then restore them after the rom flash.

Hi,
you should add "only for custom roms" to the title
it did not work with me ..
My phone is chevron unlocked
Even possible for not custom roms...
Hi Community,
I yesterday mentioned to open a thread today, desribing
how to backup your savegames, but you where a bit earlyier .
But I found out, how it works with every interop-unlocked
device (samsung and htc) and even with non custom-roms. You have
to download Windows phone Power Tools
http://wptools.codeplex.com/
which allows you to read and write apps isolated storage
(but only from sideloaded homebrew apps) and
wp root tools 0.8 by [email protected] Also you have to download or
sideload and homebrew app, for exapmple MPA Tool, (which is also an useful app ).
I you dont want this, you can choose any other homebrew application
on your phone and find out its installation path.
Now, if you have wp power tools and wp root tools "by heathcliff"
there are two steps to go:
1. (wp root tools)
you have to navigate to the path of the game (f.e. angry birds)
Applications/Data/E4571A02-0B87.../Data/Isolated Storage
and copy the two files (for other games it can be more than two)
in the isolated storage of your choosen homebrew app (e.g. MPA TOOL).
Applications/Data/7AC990A5-7092....../angry birds
(I created folders in this path to hold it clear...)
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/screencapture11a.jpg/
2. windows phone power tools
When this is done connect your phone with zune and run wp power
tools. Under "file browser" you can open the isolated storage of MPA
Tool (or any other homebrew app) and copy the files from the
games to your computer.

After flasing a new ROM just revert the hole progress...

so its easier for you to find the path...
@Malte1234511: That's only going to work for Samsung gen1 phones. Non-Samsung or even Samsung gen2 phones can't use WP7 Root Tools.
TouchXplorer used to work, but now it onlyworks for very old firmware or custom ROM (after an HTC update disabled it).

wpv backup does your whole phone. This way only backs up the game data, but you need to be on a custom rom.

I'm not sure if this is possible as ICS has no built in file manager, but is there anywhere I can put an apk file that it would be accessible without one? Specifically I want to be able to open an apk to install a file manager as the first thing I do after flashing a rom, to avoid needing to go through the market.
I thought maybe I could leave it in sdcard/download but it seems like the downloads program is blind to anything in that folder that wasn't officially "downloaded". (I suppose I could upload one to my dropbox and download it via the browser, if there are no viable options). Also made a few stabs at getting the gallery program to show one but it seems to filter out anything that's not a picture or video.
Any ideas for places to stick an apk and get one of the stock programs to let me open it?
maybe email it to yourself?
but you would have to log into the email app to do that
but there isnt really anyway to access the file without a file explorer
Open your favourite rom zip, add your apk to /system/app, save the zip, push that zip to the phone, flash.

Yeah in general I'm trying to cut out the step of signing into anything and just restoring my apps from a backup before I need to cancel automatic restore functions (which I do want on and running once I do my own initial run of things).

I'm guessing this comes with the consequence of raising any apk added in this manner to system app level? Not that I distrust the apps I'd have in mind for this to do anything malicious themselves, but is there any danger of opening security holes by elevating apps not designed to be system apps?
What I've done many times is just enabling Air Plane as soon as I can after flashing a ROM. That's way I can install any apk I want.
Hope it helps.

Hmm but then what is your method for getting to that apk? If you do it over wifi that seems to defeat the point, no?
Personally I've found that it works just fine to uncheck the boxes for recovery syncing during the setup process, and then just re-enabling them later in settings. (Alternately, not signing into my google account at all until I've performed a backup). That way even if I end up signing into the market to download a recovery app, it doesn't automatically try to re-download everything else on its own.
I'm starting to think that my dropbox solution will be the cleanest, as it'll be a simple step of opening the browser and downloading a single apk every time at the same link.
I bet that the inclusion of a basic file explorer will be one of those headline items in a future android release. A nice basic functionality that the bloggers can rehash to death before anything actually hits.
Download the file manager apk over wifi and install the APK via download manager.
I do it all the time with Chinese android tablets with no market access.
Or Bluetooth it from another device.
Or just use the market

Transfer by USB from my laptop.
Is there a way to do that in which the device will launch the apk you move over? When I copy files over usb, it only ever puts them into whatever directory, and I need a file explorer to interact with them on the phone. And then I'm back to square one, as far as this particular task is concerned (once things are up and running I just use the LAN option in ES file explorer and it's as convenient as could be).
you have the apk in your computer right?
connect the phone to pc, and use adb to install
'adb install <apk_file_name.apk>'
Ah. I haven't used adb since I first unlocked/rooted a few months ago. Guess it probably pays to be a little familiar with those tools; they don't even occur to me when problem solving these days.

Well a completely in-phone solution would still be nice, but I guess if there were any of those they'd have come up by now.
I'll probably use abd if I'm actively working at my computer and a dropbox download otherwise.
Hi,
Like everyone else I have to say"Follow these instructions at your own risk" I do not take any responsibility for any thing that happens. It worked for me so it may work for you!
Trio 4.3 Internet Tablet M4302 Model Trio 4.3MID 4.0C by Mach Speed Technologies
I just picked this tablet up. I have successfully rooted it and have installed a working Play Store. I now have access to all my apps that I use on my Galaxy Note 10.1.
To root I used the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Once I had root I wanted to get Google Play Store on the tab. I found a couple of places that had information concerning adding Play Store to other devices and kind of pieced the info together to come up with this solution.
1. Download gapps for ICS. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
2. Unzip file
3. Navigate to the " System/app " folder and find "phonesky.apk and setupwizard.apk"
(You will need to copy these two files to your tablet)
4. Once files are on tablet use something like "Root Explorer" to copy both to the "system/app" folder of the tablet.
(The folders will need to be mounted as "R/W" so they can be written to )
5. After the files are copied to the proper folder, you need to edit the permissions for both.
6. In "Root Explorer" long press on each file and choose "permissions"
7. Edit permissions to read "Owner: Read, Write" "Group: Read" "Others: Read"
8. Reboot and launch Play Store
Frys has this for $49...thinking I might need to order it as a music player for my 2 month old!
I used this method to get Google Play Store to work, But its not rooted. At least you can download the files.
http://nwteche.com/red7_blog/instal...-or-most-other-tablets-running-android-2-3-3/
works great thanks successfully rooted and installed google play on my trio stealth lite 4.3" internet tablet m4302 runing android 4.0.4 :victory:
Mine came rooted
Thank you for this post!
Just wanted to give a heads up for anyone who finds this thread through Google or whatever, like I did, that it's possible your device is already rooted.
I bought mine today from Big Lots - branded as a: Trio 4.3" Touch Screen Media Player for Android by Mach Speed Technologies - on the box (well blister plastic wrap thing that is Hades to open...). The instruction user's manual, however just calls it a Trio 4.3" Internet Tablet.
(Specs from the box.)
Android OS 4.0
4.3" Capacitive Touch Screen
4GB Internal Memory with Micro SD Slt (Up to 32GB)
Built-in WiFi
Speaker
Auto Rotate for Portrait & Landscape Viewing
1.2GHz Processor
Rechargable Li-on Battery
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you, and let everyone know to check your device first. There may be better ways to check, but there are a couple of apps in the Amazon App Store called "Root Checker" - don't get the "My Root Checker" - it has crazy pop-up ads - I deleted it in seconds. But just check to see if your device is rooted. It could save you some time, and potential headaches.
Well, jsut confirming that this guide works. In the root post, I used the stadard root method...if you are like me and got this for a little one, they wanted apps. Of course I couldnt open until today...but it really works. I just dowloaded the root explorer apk (a quick google search worked) and installed it...i can upload a screen shot if necessary

My Trio also had root access right out of the box. Followed the instructions right down to obtaining the "root explorer" apk. Worked like a charm, no issues at all. Now I just need to find a custom rom that will perform better than stock. Thanks for all the info.
Hulu Plus
Since this is the best thread for this tablet I've found. I wanted to ask if anyone has gotten Hulu to work? I have installed many different versions including the latest and all of them will play the ads just fine, but once it gets the episode it just sits there and buffers and buffers and buffers. Devices on the same WIFI have no issues. I am even talking with Hulu suppor about it and of course they are playing dumb about it and just giving me standard troubleshooting. Is this tablet blocked by Hulu somehow because it's chinese made? I don't get a region error, which I can force with proxies and such. I just get buffering and buffering and buffering. Any help would be much appreciated.
I need firmware or update.zip im stuck on boot screen.
So starting a new thread to collate all information regarding MicroG replacing google play services.
MTCD units running android lollipop are slow and sluggish due to google play services, you can either freeze/disable google play services and lose the ability to log in to maps and google now ect. Or you can go a bit further and replace it with MicroG.
https://microg.org/
More people need to test it and try out what does/does not work. My install wasn't super clean as I just figured it out as I went, so my "steps" are going to be a bit weird and if more people try/have better advice i'll amend as appropriate.
I installed from Malaysk's 10.8 rom.
I uninstalled all google apps I could find with titanium backup, google play services, google store, GmsCore, GoogleBackupTransport, GoogleFeedback, GoogleLoginService, GoogleOneTimeInitializer, GooglePartnerSetup, GoogleServicesFramework, Phonesky, SetupWizard and Velvet ect. You may not have all of these installed but if you have any of them, remove them.
I had issues removing google store and play services, I ended up having to freeze them with Titanium backup, rebooting, then uninstall, then rebooting.
Then you need to go into xposed and search for the module "FakeGApps by thermatk" , install it, activate it, reboot.
Now I installed f droid (https://f-droid.org/) and added the repo https://microg.org/fdroid/. Then installed the GmsCore, GsfProxy and FakeStore. Then rebooted.
Now it seemed to work-ish at this point. But if i tried to add a google account it got stuck at "please wait" loading. I then booted into recovery and whiped data/factory reset. Reinstalled gsfproxy and fake store, xposed FakeGApps ect, but when i tried to install GmsCore from f-droid, it never appeard for me to install. so I downloaded the latest PREVIEW RELEASE apk direct https://microg.org/download.html and installed that, rebooted and now it works perfectly.
The only issue i have found so far is google maps sometimes pops up saying "google maps isnt working do you want to close it?" when google maps is running fine so i just say no the once and all is ok. Based on this try the following steps to install.
These instructions assume you are using Malaysks lollipop rom!
1) use Titanium backup or root uninstaller ect to remove all google apps (GmsCore, GoogleBackupTransport, GoogleFeedback, GoogleLoginService, GoogleOneTimeInitializer, GooglePartnerSetup, GoogleServicesFramework, Phonesky, SetupWizard and Velvet ect)
2) reboot, ensure all google apps are removed (may need to freeze/disable any google apps not uninstalling first, then uninstalling)
2.5) Boot into recovery, delete all data/factory wipe option (you may be able to just wipe dalvik cache with a rooted app from the app store or similar instead, not tried, if anyone does let me know how it works.)
3) install FakeGApps by thermatk from xposed, activate, and reboot.
4) go to https://microg.org/download.html and download latest microG Services Core Preview release (not stable 0.2.4), microG Services Framework Proxy stable and microG Store (FakeStore release) stable.
5)Install the three apps, reboot.
6) Test if it works, try to go to settings -> accounts -> add account, add your google account and hopefully should all go ok.
There is a way to get the play store to work via blankstore, i have yet to try as I just use YALP store (https://f-droid.org/repo/com.github.yeriomin.yalpstore_12.apk) If you attempt to install blankstore let us know how it goes and how you did it.
Apps working:
Maps (works 100% with logged in account)
Google play music
Apps partially working
AutoMate (Works, and works really fast, except when go to the maps section, the map loads but is cut off at the top where the menu bar should be, then it has some issues displaying navigation fully and crashes when trying to manually set home/work locations in app. Needs more testing)
Apps not working:
Android Auto (wont get past first loading screen, may need to try alternative versions, needs more testing)
How to install Blankstore (working play store) Not tested!
Download blankstore apk
On Android 4.4 replace /system/app with /system/priv-app in the following instructions!
Installation instructions Requires Android 4.0.4+:
Remove old PlayStore/Market files if needed (using adb shell or as you like):
/system/app/Vending.apk
/system/app/Phonesky.apk
/system/app/com.android.vending.apk
/data/app/com.android.vending-*.apk
/data/data/com.android.vending (folder)
Copy new com.android.vending.apk to /system/app with permission 644 or rw-r--r--
Reboot
Generate an Android ID
Create an "Google Play Store for BlankStore"-Account via Settings/Accounts&Sync
Launch BlankStore from your Launcher.
To generate an android id:
On your PC:
Install Java (if not already done)
Download android-checkin-1.0.jar from here
On Windows: Download bla.bat into the same folder as android-checkin-1.0.jar and double click it
On Linux/OSX: Open a Terminal in the folder where android-checkin-1.0.jar is located and run
Code:
java -jar android-checkin-1.0.jar <email> <password>

Can you check Google Play Music works ?
MicroG is a very effective tool as a means to not waste memory in google play services.
I have also experienced the problem of "Maps is not responding" like Dec64 said.
At this time, if Google MAP is running in the background, it stops automatically.
My experience does not stop automatically after Google MAP has been running for about 10 minutes.
By the way, this is an MTCD section but my unit is joying mtcb rk3188.
That is, the operation confirmation is obtained also with mtcb units.
Unfortunately I did not succeed in lollipop ROM(developed by Malaysk and Booroondooks)
Thank you Dec64 for creating a special thread.
I hope that you will be able to bring the experience of everyone and make the microG more stable on our car android.

You can download the apks from apkmirror or similar, or make backups of your current google apks. I think there is also packs of the gapps about for custom roms that aren't bundled with google services. At worst you reflash your rom.
Also just make a backup of your maps? That's what I did. Copy maps folder to SD card and back again.
For some users cutting google out by disabling google play services will be enough, but for other people who need/want to gain access to the entire android experience this is the only way i've found so far that comes close and enables a useable experience.

As far as I could tell from my little research, phonesky seems to be defunct old attempt, Blankstore is the useable open source play store. Or perhaps Phonesky is the newest version of Blankstore without a release, either way, Blankstore seems to be the only way to get Google Play Store.

Depends if an hour of your time is worth $50.
I do not think that memory expansion and microG are equivalent.
Will you buy memory again when Google Play services get more fat?

This problem does not occur in Kitkat ROM.And I gave up. Because it exceeds my ability.
I found that you can not use it unless you install at least microG servicecore and FakeStore(Or its equivalent apk).
Should be deleted
GmsCore(Google Play services)
GoogleBackupTransport
GoogleFeedback(Market Feedback Agent)
GoogleLoginService(Google Account Manager)
GoogleOneTimeInitializer
GooglePartnerSetup
GoogleServicesFramework
Phonesky(Google Play Store)
SetupWizard(I think that this is not included in the custom ROM)
Velvet(Google App)
I was able to get an account to sign in but Google Music says its unable to connect. Anyone run into this issue?

Reading through the thread, I think this is only for headunits that are from HotAudio or MTCD-HA. I don't see any confirmation these would work with KDL or JY units. Mine is a JY unit so not sure it would work for people aside from those that have those particular units.
Will try the MicroG to see if that helps with the speed also.

any new development on this??
Willing to donate if someone wants to take it up and make it work for MTCD units as intended.

What do you mean? It does work as intended if you install it.
Only issues is microG isn't exactly the same as google play services so some apps that use certain elements of google play services will not run, nor ever run untill/if microG includes that level of API function or whatever is missing.
