Is it better to gain temp root before the ota or after or does it even matter either way? Cause right now I'm have not updated my phone eventhough its asking me too.

You realize we have perm root now, right?
Yeah but I thought you had to gain temp root first in order to gain perm root.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
You can get perm root without updating. If you plan on flashing a rom it doesnt matter. If your going to stay stock then i would update first.

Actually u can perm root with or without the ota update. It's win,win either way.

I used visionary 11& it worked flawlessly. As for rage,I couldn't tell u. I haven't tried that method yet.

If you're comfortable with adb then I highly recommend rage, since you're in control over exactly what steps you're doing. If adb freaks you out then probably best to stick with Visionary.
I say this a lot but use the rage method! I honestly feel if you cant get that method to work you shouldnt be rooting your phone. Rage method is only a total of about 6 lines to enter

Yeah I feel comfortable using adb, I just wanted to see what method you all using and how successful each method is. I have been looking at rage and it seems to be pretty easy, along with gfree.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I now would recomend gfree as it gives the real deal. Its actually easier then the rage method and about as 1 click as it gets. I have always been a fan of doing it myself but after reading the wiki and seeing exactly what gfree does... its a very safe option imho.

gfree isn't anything to do with rooting though, that's doing the S-OFF, SIM unlock etc.
You still need to get temp root before you run gfree. So you can either use Visonary or rage.
I stand corrected. I already had root so i skipped that part. Oh well.

Not so. Gfree is about radio s-off, which is a better, "deeper" permaroot then the earlier method. It makes the hacked up engineering hboot unnecessary (unless you want fastboot). And is safer imo. Even if you were going to use the engineering hboot i'd use gfree first as its "true" permaroot and won't lock you out of your phone if you overwrite hboot with the stock version.
Use gfree, THEN clockwork recovery and backup your phone. Then do hboot if you want.
Just my opinion.

gfree doesn't have anything to do with rooting. Yes, it gives you radio S-OFF, but if you have temp root and run gfree, then you still have temp root. You need to either run Visionary again or run the "root" script from the rage stuff to give you permaroot. Or start with permaroot and then run gfree.
gfree is not "true" permaroot, it's "true" S-OFF.

You're right. I meant to say that it facilities permanent root better than the hboot alternative does. You still need to copy the su and Superuser.apk using either method, but if your plan is to shut off the r-o emmc, do it with gfree.

I'm not so sure you can, mainly because as part of the rooting process you need to push some system files. If it's not rooted, a solution like root explorer or some su-enabled file browser obviously won't work...
I've only had mine for a couple days so I'm no expert though
Not possible I think. Whatever you do don't even try visionary perm root. Temp root is okay though.

I recommend you use the method in the Wiki (which does use rage, along with gfree). It's the most up-to-date and safest (i.e. least chance of brick/semi-brick) method.

Power the phone off and press the power button and down on the voulme button at the same time. Wait till it gets you to the recovery? And you'll see at the top if it S-on your not permarooted. If it says S-off you are.

search "blackprince how to root your G2" on youtube. Follow everything the dude does in the video and you should be good to go. That's what I followed, and I got s-off, but not gfree. I did it the first try withing half an hour. Good luck, sir.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
That blackprince video is using an old method though. The most up-to-date method, and far safer, is the gfree method described in the Wiki - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...cess_.28Permanent_Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29
If you already have used that video to root the phone, you should still use gfree to get full radio S-OFF, because it has more options from getting out of bad situations - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...Phone.2C_Set_SuperCID.2C_and_Turn_Radio_S-OFF

I installed Terminal Emulator and it keeps force closing, so I found another one called Android Terminal Emulator on the market and installed that. It opens up and I see the following line:
export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ $
I have an active cursor but guide did not mention that I'd see this or that one of the Terminal Emulators would keep force closing on me. I'd post this in the original thread but I'm not allowed apparently. Any help would be appreciated!
After your temp rooted with Visionary, you open terminal emulator and type "su" without the quotes. That will cause a superuser popup that you need to accept and then you should see a # sign and then you can continue with the rooting process.
Awesomeness.. thank you. Just wanted to be sure I was doing everything right! I think I was successful. I don't own a brick and when I booted into Recovery it says S-OFF. I have yet to flash a ROM. Can I get rid of Visionary at this point?

First I wanted to say hi to all of you. Evo 4G is my second Android phone. I'm still a noob in training but I'm getting by.
I'm having a bit of a issue with trying to use some apps for root only and keep getting that I need to be rooted. Yes S-Off is displayed but I'm still running into this issue no matter what. Did I miss something? I'm still searching the forum to find a answer but I haven't found anything as of yet.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

Edit: I figured out what the problem was. Me being stupid and not reading enough. Mods go ahead and lock/delete this thread.
to double check, there is an app in the market called "root check" by joeykrim.
and for apps to gain access to the phone you should have the app "superuser" it gives other apps permission to access root.
As someone previously stated, you'll need an app called "superuser" to allow apps to use root permissions.

This.
Running Revolutionary Roots your phone, but you need superuser to give programs root access. To give programs root access, you will need a rooted ROM with the superuser application or just download the superuser app.

Yeah I figured that out after reading the sticky at the beginning. My fault for not paying attention. I'm now rooted and loving it.
Thanks for the reply's guys.
I really did it now!!!
Ok so I'm back to ask some questions due to a noob mistake. Now I have been reading many of the threads that are available to fix my actual issues that I'm dealing with. I'm going to be very detailed so I apologize in advance.
So like a dumb dumb I decided to unroot my Evo as I was sure/ uncomfortable using the rooted OTA update to up date. So now I did some more reading and I did not need to unroot. Sorry I dont' know what I was thinking.
I've tried to run Revolutionary but all it does is aborts the operation everytime. I tried to change the recovery from Clockwork to Amon RA as I read that it is better so I tried to do that too. Nope that doesn't work either.
I was able to update the root OTA update but that was all that was done. So now I'm here asking for more help as I did more reading how to fix the current issue I'm having and its not working.
PLEASE Help me or guide me in the right direction to fix this.
This is all I am trying to accomplish:
1. Figure out why and what happend and get my Evo rooted
2. Apply the Amon RA recovery
Now if I need to completely wipe my phone I will do it if that is what you think is needed to be done. I know how to back up my app/ contacts etc. So just assist this dumb dumb please!
Anyone have any ideas?

First, I would flash an unrooted stock ROM - the latest, if possible (see this post).
Then, try rooting via Revolutionary again (revolutionary.io). Sometimes during the unrooting process, everything isn't completely restored to stock, so you might just need to flash a completely stock ROM to get back to the point where Revolutionary will work again.

Thanks for the heads up on this info. Now with the Stock RUU being RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_release, does the 2.15 represent the HBOOT? As mine is the 2.16 or does that not matter?

The file name has nothing to do with the HBOOT version. It doesn't matter. If the HBOOT version you currently have is newer than the version in the RUU, it will simply skip updating it.

All you need to is flash another hboot for the evo. (Any of them will work. Doesn't really matter. Look around for the files and a guide is out there I'm sure. If not, PM me. Anyway, flash it. And then run revolutionary. It should work then.
I did not know that, tommytomatoe. But regardless, what I suggested would work if my thinking is correct.

He said he has Hboot 2.16. If I'm not mistaken you cannot downgrade your Hboot version from something like 2.16 to 2.15 or 2.10. Either way, Revolutionary will be able to root 2.16 just fine. Seems like all he needs to do is follow Captain Throwbacks advice to get his phone out of "What the hell are you doing to me" mode.
I have yet to perform the flash. I got caught up at work late last night. I'll do it tonight for sure when I get off work.
Thank you all for the input and I'll let you all know if my Evo will let me get it out of ""What the hell are you doing to me" mode.

It's very simple.
You have to download the package in the zergRush Exploit thread, then unzip the content of zip in a folder in your pc.
At the last go in to folder where you extract zip, and click on "runme.bat" (you have to follow only what appair on your pc screen).
I think it's really the easiest method there is in xda to root a device.

Don't worry all this operation you describe are reversible. You can unroot your Arc for sure, and all operation are easy as root.
For the bootloader depends what you will want do with your device. If you want change kernel, rom maybe it's better if you unlock it.
