Can someone show me how to root (without unlocking bootloader) using the zergRush Exploit?
There's not much of a tutorial on the actual page, and I'm new to this whole thing. I just want to be asked to root so I can remove some apps

There's no tutorial there though, it has instructions there with the presumption that most people know about rooting.

If you are a total newbie i think you should read up on what root is and what you can do before you root your phone. You can mess up quite good if you dont know that you are doing.

It's very simple.
You have to download the package in the zergRush Exploit thread, then unzip the content of zip in a folder in your pc.
At the last go in to folder where you extract zip, and click on "runme.bat" (you have to follow only what appair on your pc screen).
I think it's really the easiest method there is in xda to root a device.

Try to install this file i attached. For me worked with W7/64bit.
If dont work for you install android SDK Here, and then follow the instruction here, when you finish you will able to do what you want with adb driver .
Is it possible to flash .42 kernel and then to use zergrush method?

Thanks, you're helping me out a lot because I really am clueless and this whole forum is overwhelming Lol.
So once I've rooted, I understand I can unroot it. But is unrooting as easy as rooting? Does it involve flashing/unlocking bootloader? As I intend to keep my bootloader locked.

Don't worry all this operation you describe are reversible. You can unroot your Arc for sure, and all operation are easy as root.
For the bootloader depends what you will want do with your device. If you want change kernel, rom maybe it's better if you unlock it.

In regards to my previous post I meant that would unrooting require flashing? I just intend to root to get rid of some apps on my Arc S (i.e. facebook app) and then unroot again.
Anyhow I've rooted it :-D
But for some reason Busybox didn't install itself, so had to manually install it from the market
Just a question, because I´m a newbie too and I´m thinking of rooting my phone (also to delete some apps and free some space):
Why don´t you use the "Namaste" guide ?? Doesn´t work on your firmware ?

Since you are using fastboot i assume you got an unlocked boot loader. So here is a easy way to root .62
And in case you are done with it and want to have recovry on stock kernel then you should install CWM AUTO INSTALLER from market/play store. Just follow the instructions after running the app! If you have any problem you can drop a question here or in the thread i suggested you!
If i helped you, hit the thanks button!

Since you dont want to unlock your bootloader...you got to follow the OTA stuff.
Here is what you gonna need...
A fresh .42 firmware, flashtools. You can get the stuff from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330314
Now,
1. Flash the .42 firmware with flashtools
2. Root it with flashtools (the above thread tells you how to)
3. Update your phone over the air.
F.A.Q.
Q. I already have a rooted .42, why should i flash it again and then have root acess?
A. Most of the users uninstall the bloatware or other stock based stuff and then they face problems during updating the phone OTA. Hence to be on the safer side...its advised to flash the .42 firmware and root it again.
If i helped you..dont forget to hit thanks!

If you have bootloader locked you will need to down grade your firmware to build 42 do this download program called flashtools available on xda.
Download from xda the .42 file use flashtools to load on to phone.
Then root with either zergrush method or from flashtools.
Once rooted use ota to update to latest build 62
if bootloader is unlocked then do as described in previous posts.
All software and tools are available in general or q&a sections.

Well the simplest way to downgrade is to use flashtool, as for rooting, you could check the development section to see if that build is rootable

So today after watching tutorial videos and reading about it I finally made my mind and decided to flash/root my xperia arc. The build no of my stock was .431 now what I did was download the '.431 ready to root ftf' and flashed my phone, now when I tried to root it it gave me several errors mkdir failed for tmp, File exists and rm failed for *, No such file or directory and to make thing worse the memory card messed up and I had to format it and lost all the data. Now I've recovered the phone using pc companion but I failed very badly
I have no idea what exactly did I do wrong?

Go to setting after flash the ready to root 4.0.3. Click at xperia. Click connectivity. Click USB connection mode. Choose MSC. The default is MTP if i not mistaken. Then root your phone and flash back 4.0.4 kernel.

Yes, after unlocking the bootloader flash a kernel, and then install a custom rom that's pre-rooted. Much easier way if you don't mind not sticking with stock.
