What are you trying to install?
How does Among recovery work for you?
You have to put the file you want to install in the root of the sd card

Are you an IDIOT? It installs zip files all day long, and the best part is you don't have to search through all the crap on your sd card it only shows the zip files in the root directory so you don't have to vol down all day to find the file you want to install.

Dude chill.
OP, as was stated in post 4, the zip needs to be on the root of your SD for recovery to see it. Are you just getting an error or do the files not even show up?

Yeah all you have to do is put the file on the root of the card for it to flash files. Amon-RA won't look in different folders just root.
I apologize for my outburst cruise350 and his boyfriend kinda got to me

First off let me say I'm new to root. I rooted my evo last night by following the 2.2 root video guide. Now I'm looking for a rom and kernal that's right for me so please be patient with a noob.
Can someone explain to me (in noob terms please) how to install a rom and kernal. If there is a video guide that would be great. I assume all roms will come with the same files so once I learn how to do it I should be set.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Please use the search tool. Most roms in the development forum say how to also.
And check the sticky in the same forum.

PEOPLE USING AMONRA RECOVERY THE ROM AND KERNEL MUST BE ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD. ONLY ON CLOCKWORK RECOVERY CAN YOU SCAN THROUGH FOLDERS TO FIND YOUR ROM/KERNEL. SOME PEOPLE SWITCH RECOVERYS WITHOUT REALIZING SO TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE I SUGGEST PUTTING ALL ROMS/KERNELS ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD. ALSO, WHILE ON AMONRA RECOVERY TO GO BACK A MENU/SCREEN YOU MUST PRESS VOLUME DOWN AND VOLUME UP AT THE SAME TIME.
1.) To install a new ROM you first have to download the said ROM. (Obviously.) Second of all, you have to find the kernel you want to use. Most ROMs come with kernels but you can still download the kernel of your choice.
2.) Once you have the ROM and kernel of your choice, go into recovery mode by powering off your phone, turn it ON WHILE HOLDING the VOLUME DOWN button, do not let go of the volume down button until you're at the boot screen. Select "Recovery" by pressing the VOLUME DOWN button and selecting it by pressing POWER.
3.) You're now in recovery mode. Make a NANDROID backup (varies on how to do it depending on which recovery you're using) if you're on Clockword Recovery scroll down until you see something saying "nandroid" when there select it with POWER, then select the option that says "Backup". (Not sure how AmonRAs recovery works exactly.)
4.) Wipe data/factory reset twice, wipe CACHE twice, wipe Dalvik-cache twice. (Dalvik-cache is located in "advanced" in the main recovery screen.)
5.) Choose "install zip from sd card" then "choose zip from sd card", press up once and it'll bring you to the bottom of the list and you should see your ROM, select it, then install it. Once done installing, go back and reboot your phone, it should be all done now. IF, IF, IF, you have another kernel, after installing your ROM, re-wipe CACHE and DALVIK-CACHE, THEN install the kernel.
You're all set.
Ok simple enough. Thank you for the info. Can I download the rom directly to my phone from this site or do I need to download it on my computer and move it to my sdcard?

You can download it from your phone, but make sure it's on the ROOT of your sd card. I prefer downloading it from my PC, then putting it on my sd card.
So you mean make sure its on the sd card itself and not in a file like downloads right? Also can I delete the PC36IMG file so it doesn't do that update check every time I go into bootloader?

Yes, make sure it's not in a folder like "downloads". And yes you can ditch the PC36img.

Depends what recovery you are using. Ra recovery has to be in the root folder of the SD card. Cwr you can actually go through folders and search for the zip. So it wouldn't matter where you out it on SD card for clockwork but If ra recovery and its in a folder in SD card you won't see it and can't search through folders for it.

No problem just trying to help out.. I used Cwr then found out the delvik wipe didn't work. I had my SD card organized. Had my roms and kernels in a folder. Switched to ra recovery and couldn't find them. Realized then it had to be in root folder. Thought somehow I lost them during the process. I have a backup on my pc also just in case.

I used ROM manager to flash to Amon Ra Recovery v1.8.0. I'm using the Premium version of ROM manager by the way. I booted into recovery but when I click on install zip from SD card it won't search or come up with anything.
I don't know if it's just me but when I try to flash CWM recovery I get an error in ROM manager. I'm trying to use RA to wipe dalvik but now I'm stuck. I'll do a search for flashable recoveries so I can just do it that way but does anyone know why I can't browse SD card.
:: Just a side note::
I'm using my second SD card which I formatted 2 days ago. It basically has like 5 things on it and I've had this problem since the beginning but never bothered to investigate since I was able to download and flash CWM recovery.
The zip file has to be on the root of your sd card. It is probably in the download folder if you dont see it. Use astro file manager to move the zip to the root.

Ok I will try that.

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yah you can't browse your sd card in the install section. I dont believe you ever could. Astro like dude said is the easiest way to move a file without a computer.
There's only two problems with Amon_ra recovery vs. Clockwork Mod recovery:
1. You can't browse all your files on the root of your SD card in Amon_RA. It only lets you see what will fit on the screen of your. Where as in clockwork you can scroll.
2. Amon_RA doesn't have advanced restore options. In clockwork you can choose to restore only data such as apps, texts, and other settings.
I can't flash clockwork. There's always an issue with ROM manager.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
In his new release you can. Its just not ported to the evo yet.
When did clockwork get the second features? Those ate cool. Done flaws with clockwork:
1. Doesn't backup radios.
2. Has wiping bugs.
Other than those its cool.

Swyped From Eva Running Myn's RLS4.95 On The Now Network!
Hey guys,
Okay so here's the schtick:
I've got Incredibly Re-Engineered Z 1.01 installed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983182, "The Blue One"). I like it about 80% of the way, but it's giving me issues, so I planned on going back to either regular -Re-Engineered 2.3.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893233, "The Green One")or SkyRaider 3.5. The issue is that neither of them will install with Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.8. Perusing the forums told me to downgrade to 2.5.1.2. Fine. Looked around, downloaded the zip file, and tried to install it via HBOOT 0.92. I downloaded it three times and made sure the SD card was formatted as FAT32, just as the instructions said. I renamed it per the instructions as well, and each time, HBOOT tells me "no image or wrong image". I'm making the assumption that attempting to clockwork mod from within clockwork mod would be a generally bad idea.
I've got everything backed up on my MicroSD card, so while I have no problem blowing away my internal storage to all hell and doom, I'd rather not do the same to my SD card (although I do have it backed up as well, so if shove comes to thrust I CAN do that). In fact, I am having the perpetual "preparing phone storage" issue as well, so blowing everything to all hell and doom is probably a good idea for me anyway.
Regardless, I need to downgrade clockwork mod until the next release of re-engineered. I already did a search for the procedures, but right now the score is HBOOT: 1, Voyager529: 0.

It is on the root of the SD card. HBOOT sees it, but insists that it's a 'bad image or no image'.

i have an evo 4g with cm 7.2 rom and tiamat sbc kernel. i wanted the original kernel so i downloaded it from this site last night and unzipped it using clockworkmod. now my phone is stuck on the htc evo 4g screen. i am new and still am unfamiliar with most of this stuff but can someone please help?
also my phone is rooted:
supersonic evt3 ship s-on
hboot-2.18.0001
microp-041f
touch panel-atmel224_16ab
radio-2.15.00.12.19
not sure if that all matters. i tried restore in clockwork recovery and it didnt change anything....still stuck.
CWM blows. Wipe cache and dalvik and flash another kernel.
thanks for the reply.
i am new. how do i do that from recovery?
i did wipe the dalvik cache. is that enough? then i tried unzipping the tiamat sbc kernel and it was still stuck.
btw....is there a better rom that supports wimax???
If possible, upgrade to a Ra based recovery. That'll make the wiping and flashing easier on your part, as far as ROM choice, I'll give you sense.
I'll just leave this here....

RA refers to Amon Ra, another popular recovery for the EVO. CWM is known for being troublesome on the EVO, so RA-based recoveries are the way to go.

Flashing recoveries for dummies:
STEP 1: Download recovery of choice (smelkusmod ra recovery)
STEP 2: Rename the zip to "PC36IMG.zip" and move to root of the SD card
STEP 3: Boot to bootloader and follow the prompts to update recovery
STEP 4: reboot to recovery
STEP 5: Prosper!!
(If this doesn't go to plan, unzip the pc36img and check the txt file and change the mainver to 1.00.000.0, zip the file again, and repeat from the beginning)
Hope this does the trick
Tried it. Read that whole thread. What is fastboot? When I select it in recovery it doesn't seem to be the same as what everyone talks about. My recovery in clockelwork alternate recovery looks like the original and doesn't do anything special.

PM me and I'll help you sort this out once and for all when I get some free time.
Try this. Download the Smelkus recovery and place it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). Rename the file PC36IMG.zip (make sure you don't have an extra .zip extension on the end or it won't work). Once this is done, turn the phone OFF and unplug your phone from your computer. Once the phone is OFF, hold down the volume DOWN button, then press the power button and wait for the HBOOT screen to load. If everything works as it should, you'll get a prompt asking you if you want to update. Use the appropriate keys to select YES, then wait for the update to load. When you go into HBOOT, as part of its loading process, it looks for a file on the SD card named PC36IMG.zip and when it finds it, will ask if you want to update. Also, make sure you don't have more than one file on your SD card named PC36IMG.zip, or you'll have issues. Once you've got the recovery loaded, you can re-namethe file on your SD card something like PC36IMG1.zip, to avoid any issues should you have to use HBOOT to install another PC36IMG.zip file down the road.
That's what I did but I did it all from my phone. Does that matter?

That's what I'm telling you to do. You can actually download the PC36IMG to your phone, but you'll have to move it to the root of your SD card using something like Astro File Manager. That's why most instructions say to hook your phone up to a PC and download the PC36IMG to the root of the SD card.
When you press the volume down button and power button, what happens?
Sent using my HTC EVO 4G & a magic wand
I get what looks like the original recovery. I got cwm and flashed the alternate recovery. I tried shutting the phone down to bootloader and it will try to flash the img. Then it gets stuck on parsing. I changed the maniver and then it says no image when flashing and there's nothing about an update. I'm s-on.
