Hello and thank you ahead of time for reading my thread. I spent a good deal of time searching for solutions in your forums but couldn't find anything related, so apologies if this is a repost.
I recently flashed my stock htc incredible with the leaked 2.2 ROM. While the flashing and installation of the new OS was successful, the phone itself is now acting really weird.
First, it is incredibly slow. There is a noticeable lag between the time I touch the screen and the time the touch actually registers. For example, to dial a number, I have to long press every button for it to register.
The second and much more annoying issue is the phone starts doing all sorts of things on its own. When sending a text message for example, all these keys are randomly pressed, it goes to the desktop, back to sending a text, inputs all these random characters, and sometimes frustratingly on occasion sends the text message on its own. This happens on and off and I haven't been able to figure out what triggers.
My question is, what can I do to fix it? I've reinstalled the ROM several times already and the problems appear every single time.
If I can't fix it, I'd love to go back to my previous stock rom and just wait for HTC's update.
Your help is greatly appreciated it.
Thanks.
have you cleared data and cache? do you have clockworkmod recovery install? please go through all the steps you went through to install the 2.2 leak
If ur rooted then u have clockworkmod installed...you should do a factory reset thru clockworkmod and wipe all data and cache ...
Then after that perhaps try a good and stable ROM ..
Wow thank you for such a prompt response.
I followed the steps in this thread:
[ROM]Leaked Stock 2.2 with Sense [LEAKED ROM - SOME BUGS!!]
(it's on the development front page, I would post a link but since I am a new member I am not allowed to).
In summary, I first updated to Radio version indicated in that thread (version 2).
I then ran unrevoked 3 which installed clockworkmod recovery. Then, I did a wipe. After, in the recovery screen I installed from the zip file of the mod that was in my SD card.
This is all I have done to date.

Okay...good to go.
You should boot into recovery aka clockworkmod...
Then do factoryreset wipe cache and data...
And I would recommend u install a ROM that u would like and u should be fine.
if ya like sense do skyraider....if ya like vanilla do CM6 test 8....and ya should be okay
If ya get stuck feel free to pm me and I can give u my Gtalk and can help furthur if ya need.
Cheers
I was having this problem too. I solved it by cleaning the screen and making sure my hands werent sweaty before use. I think thays why it didnt register the touch

With an eyglass cleaninn cloth? That worked for me.
I first came across the problem while testing the rom i made, jdfroyo, so initially thought it was my rom. I wiped my hands (which were sweaty) and then thoroughly cleaned my phone off. I havent had issues since.

I have heard that cleaning screen with a certain product (don't remember if it was like soap or alcohol) is not recommended as it leaves an almost invisible layer and can send it to that whacko stage of doing weird stuff. Double check on that... Otherwise, I am with the others > Wipe data/cache > then do a ROM re-flash.

Hi,
Thanks all for your help. And thanks to acid for helping me out on gtalk.
After trying several different ROMs, my phone continues to be really laggy. For example, I can type an entire word in the keyboard before it appears on the screen, and usually only the first few letters register.
I think my screen is just malfunctioning and it happened to coincide with the day I flashed my phone so I am just going to do a warranty exchange.
Thanks again everyone!
hey,
my girlfriend has a moto defy and im quite in to getting it going to display its full potential as i am sure the this device is not great in its stock state and it seems to have some dugs e.g. freezing a lot etc... you all know what i mean haha. she has not quite grasped the fact that the device will be 1000 times better with a nice build of cm7 but i am having issues with the bootloader and installing cwm based recovery so can you guys give me a step by step guide on how to get this going i would like to see how it takes ics and if they have fixed the issue with the hardware accelerator
thanks a lot if you can help p.s. can you send me the message on the private message option as i will be over at the p6200 tab plus section and not on er haha
Okay.
EDIT2: ***Im tired** sorry. We need root too!
Use superoneclick to root.
Because i've had to edit twice, it's better you read this LOL
http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/root-motorola-defy
So, first you need to get ADB. EDIT: This is unecessary! But useful anyway!
This is quite a long process, so follow this guide
Next, you need to get 2nd init, this installs a custom recovery app, which you use to get CM7. Just install the app on the phone, and press install 2nd init.
When it reboots, press the volume key when the LED flashes blue for a couple of seconds.
It is attached.
Okay, now find your chosen rom (plenty on here)
Download it, and put it on your sd card, then install using 2nd init.
Don't forget to follow all instructions!

Ok after hours and hours, I finally got my KF rooted and online. I have installed superuser with KFU....I also installed the gapps from KFU, that part didnt work. I downloaded from the play store gmail. I am trying to get it to sync.....I think I need the google services framwork or something like that. I want it to be able to sync to my gmail and my phone. I know it is possible...but there is so many different websites and whatnot, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction
thanks
Heather
You'll need to install the gapps zip. Can you provide a bit more information regarding that part not working? Maybe a screenshot of KFU at it?
By the way, I strongly advise you to install FFF and TWRP.

I dont know how to do a screen shot. I've got it up and running. I have it rooted and the market app installed. that all works. The wierd thing is that when I first rooted this months ago...as soon as the KF booted up, all of my apps from my phone were there. AWESOME! But now, I have done the same thing and nothing. All of my amazon apps are there, but thats it. my calendar was there with all the dates, so I guess that means it was able to sync. but the gmail does not sync automatically. I have googleservicesframework.apk on there, installed and changed permissions. do I need the calendarsync.apk?
I used KFU this morning to root and I think it automatically installed twrp, when I boot up the first KF logo is blue, at the bottom there is a boot up menu, then it boots into the orange/yellow KF logo and its good from there. Does that mean I do have twrp installed?
Honestly, I went out and bought an asus tablet because I coulnd't get my KF to do what I wanted it to.. I jsut want to be able to use it as a basic tablet, to sync my email and celandar and run the play store, thats it
Id rather keep the KF because of the size and cost But I'm just frustrated...thanks for letting me vent

Alright, you do have FFF installed (it's the blue KF logo screen). When you start up the KF, you'll notice on the bottom it's asking you to press the power button for a boot menu. Do press the power button a few times until it shows -Recovery-, and see if it boots into TWRP then - from there, choose "Install" and then pick the gapps zip (download http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip and put it in your KF if you haven't yet. You can delete that zip after it's been installed). You may also want to wipe cache and dalvik-cache.

This I don't know for certain - however, installing the gapps zip as instructed above should have everything google related working properly.

The reason that stuff was gone is probably due to an amazon OTA (over the air) update. To prevent stuff like that in the future, if you have the heart, you may want to look into flashing a custom ROM.

Press the "print screen" (Prt Scr) key on your keyboard (usually, it's next to F12) - then fire up Paint and just paste (control v or choose the select tool and right click on the image, then paste). It's a good idea to save it as PNG for better quality, or JPG for an usually smaller size, then you can either attach it here or upload to an image host, such as imgur.com, and link to it here.

No problem, we've all been there.
As a side note, do not allow Play Store to update Kindle applications - they'll malfunction until you uninstall those updates.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out.
How many times to I hit the power button to get into recovery? I see when I a supposed to press it to get into the boot menu but It just keeps going, the the logo turns yellow orange and boots normally
I would love to install a custom rom. What would you reccomend? Im running an ICS one on my phone. .. Im a little less worried about bricking this, as opposed to my htc phone that I need for work (and thats running a custom rom) Its just that there are so many ways to do things and so many differrent devices that are different in every way possible when it comes to installing custom things
I guess I should be more patient. I figured out the recovery and I have installed the gapps.

A few times, it's hard to say, as it kinda sucks at acknowledging your presses. You'll notice the letters change to a few options, with the middle one saying --Recovery-- or something like that, then just let it sit there and it'll load into TWRP in a few seconds -if- TWRP is installed. You can also just press the power button multiple times until it shows that boot menu.

Well, first is having your issues fixed. As for which to pick, is a delicate matter. You can pick between a stock based custom ROM, if you do like the stock rom look... and there are also CM7 (Android 2.3, gingerbread) and CM9 (Android 4.0, ICS). I'm currently using the sgt7 ICS ROM, but your mileage may vary - each ROM is usually fairly different, and what I like may not be what you like. Either way, you can freely "hop" around trying out different ROMs until you decide to stick with one that works best for you.

Currently my phone cannot boot up, get's stuck at the HTC white screen. I am trying to follow the directions here but I'm having some trouble. I can get into the recovery screen and by doing so it automatically starts loading the PG32IMG.zip file but does not do anything after that and I am unsure how to proceed. So far I have tried installing the .zip using the ClockworkMod Recovery but when I attempt to do so it says it can't open and just says (bad), installation aborted. Currently it is S-ON and I do not know if I can change it to S-OFF if I cannot boot it up. Right now I am waiting for the download to finish for this guide and I will hopefully be able to switch it but in the meantime if anyone has any ideas I would certainly like to hear from you.

yes. I managed to root it last night and was attempting to add this rom this morning. I don't remember what steps I took exactly (I knew I should have written it down!) and now it refuses to boot up. I am able to get into the recovery mode and access the SD card by mounting it to my PC but that's it.

So you are HTC dev unlocked but not s-off if I'm understanding correctly. The flashing steps are a little different. You need to look around for flashing instructions for dev unlocked phones. I believe the Viper rom thread has the instructions, and they work for any rom.

Yes, his install instructions from that OP are:
Be s-off (or dev unlock)
Install a custom recovery (twrp/4ext)
Download the ROM and place it on your external SD card.
Do a nandroid backup!
Start rom install process and make sure you select to wipe data in aroma
Select your desired setup in aroma, and finish
Reboot the device and enjoy!
If you are dev unlock, you need to pull the boot.img from the rom zip and fastboot it in hboot
I'm not dev unlock, so I've never actually done this, which is why I'm not being more specific. The boot.img is already in the zip you downloaded for the rom.
If you look in this thread, the phone is different, but the flash steps should be identical according to my understanding:

my apologies, I had originally attempted to install this ROM. I thought I had followed the directions to the letter, obviously I screwed up somewhere. I then attempted to perform a factory reset from the ClockworkMod Recovery which yielded no results. I then attempted the Viper ROM, again wiping the data and that said installation was successful. Still it refused to boot. I then tried this return to stock and with that, the .zip folder is automatically loaded but then does nothing. As of right now I cannot get past the HTC screen.

Well don't panic first of all. It's not super easy for me to figure out what's going on because your setup is quite different from mine, but I'm willing to offer any knowledge I have gleaned from reading these forums (a lot).
When you tried to go to stock, you went to the bootloader and it found the PG32IMG? Or it just stayed on the options screen of reboot, recovery, factory reset, etc?
If it found the PG32IMG did it give you any messages? Did you check the md5 sum before trying to load it?

haha too late for that, I'm already freaking out. It does find the PG32IMG automatically as I said and proceeds to load it. I was able to catch the message it flashes before it goes back to the default list, "wrong zipped image!" That doesn't sound good. I had not checked the md5sum prior to this, just did so now, says the codes do not match. Pardon my utter cluelessness but what on earth does that mean?

You need to post the md5 sum from the return to stock thread, it is right below the download. If it doesn't match after that, you have a bad download and need to download it again on a good connection. I can't see the md5 very well in your screenshot, but it looks like it is correct. Then the other thing to check is that windows didn't add an extra .zip to the file name. You'll have to go into folder options and make it show known file types then see if it says it is PG32IMG.zip.zip or something. I'll keep looking around to help, but I'd suggest reading through a lot or all of that return to stock thread.
Is the file in the root of your microsd or in a different folder like downloads?

Ok I corrected myself with the md5sum checker and now it confirms the codes match. I then doubled checked the file extension and it looks good as far as I can tell, I did not see a double .zip.zip anywhere, even after I selected "show file extensions of known files". I just tried again and got the same message,
"Checking....[PG32IMG.zip]
Wrong zipped image!
Loading...[PG32IMG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!"

well I certainly appreciate you trying to help anyways. just on a hunch I tried running through the steps of the HTCdev bootloader which I had originally done and after doing so, it now says the following,
"Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Press <POWER> to reboot."
that is interesting, should I try the VIPER ROM again and see what happens now?
Well I am happy to report now I have figured it out! I managed to find this video and by following his steps, I was immediately able to get the Viper ROM up and running. Hey guys,
I´m quite new in this area. I rooted my phone a couple of days ago, and today an update for HTC something came up. I updated right away, muscle reflex, and not thinking about that it was rooted. Right after the update was finished downloading and installing, it required a reboot to finalize the installation. Rebooted, and started to use the phone again. After about 15-20 seconds (I can do whatever I want in this time), it starts to reboot again and again and again. No idea idea why, but I guess it could be the update that is trying to finish.
I guess I can do a factory reset to remove the update, but is there anything else I can do?
edit: Since so many people are experiencing the same problem, I'll post the solution here and AnDruid's reply which explains the process.
"I solved it by clicking the Supersu app, which then asked me what kind of recovery i used. I didn´t have time to read through it all, so don't know what it specifically said, but I chose TWRP and it had to reboot and start installing some kind of script (God I feel like a noob saying some kind).
Booted up again, no restarts."
AnDruid - "The SuperSu app asked about recovery and the option to chose was TWRP/CWM (I am on TWRP). SuperSu itself seemed to reboot the phone and invoked the "OpenrRcoveryScript" installs the "update.zip" (which I am not sure but could be the HTC Update file? Or it could be something related to supersu itself)."
This thing happened to my Moto G couple of months back,
the rebooting is happening mainly due to root. before taking OTA you need to remove the root completely.
try to delete the super su or chainfire in that 20 sec interval.
I don't think deleting Supersu will stop ota.You can choose survive mode in supersu which will allow you to take ota and you will have root access. As long as you don't change/modify system you will be able to take ota.
I don't think he got an OTA, a software update was released recently that is installed directly within Android, but still requires s reboot.
No idea about the question though...
Cheers for the answers guys.

In case someone wants to dig deeper, the SuperSu app asked about recovery and the option to chose was TWRP/CWM (I am on TWRP). SuperSu itself seemed to reboot the phone and invoked the "OpenrRcoveryScript" installs the "update.zip" (which I am not sure but could be the HTC Update file? Or it could be something related to supersu itself).

Yeah that's exactly it! Glad I could help with my vaguely described solution Could someone briefly describe what the update.zip file updates?

Cheers for the answers guys.
I solved it by clicking the Supersu app, which then asked me what kind of recovery i used. I didn´t have time to read through it all, so no what it specifically said, but I chose TWRP and it had to reboot and start installing some kind of script (God I feel like a noob saying some kind).
Booted up again, no restarts.
Thanks again!

You're a life saver! Here I was thinking I messed it all up, and would need to do a factory reset

This was a lifesaver. My phone was doing the exact same thing, and I was really worried I had messed something up badly.
