Motorola Defy vs HTC Desire HD - Defy General

I know it's a bit strange question but I have no idea which phone to buy - Motorola Defy or DHD It seems that defy has even better processor than DHD or equal. And the price differs so much!
I don't really need that anti-water protection and so on, but after reading some reviews, it seems like Defy is just a great great phone for its price! Is it comfortable to hold in hand? Could you please say some words about it, I will really appreciate it

The two are very good phones... desire HD has 4,3" screen amoled, 8mpx camera, and it has froyo, and in the future 2.3 It has too 768 MB RAM and his processor is better than the defy´s that is secure...
Desire HD is more powerfull... if you like this, and its not important for you that it is a little big... this is your phone.
Defy is very cheaper, and is very more resistance.

its a bit like compairing a BMW with a Ford. They both do the exact same thing... get you from A to B. The Beemer just does it with a bit more panache. You need to decide if you can justify the extra cost.
The Desire HD is a premium phone with a bigger and better screen, better CPU, more RAM, better OS.... etc etc.
The Defy is very good value for money but it has cloth seats, not leather. It is a very good phone in my opinion and offers a better bang for your buck. It will do everything (almost) that the Desire does, the Desire HD does it just a little better.

as i will be replacing my touch hd (blackstone) within the next month i´m also considering both the dhd and the defy.
the only plus for the defy is it´s outdoor use: long-living batteries and water-resistantance. as i expect to undergo longer hiking trips next summer a dhd which lasts bearly a day without recharging is a bit of a plotstopper.
but it is just nicer and .. bigger. i love the display, here web browsing is fun!
so i still have a tough choice to make ..

I had the dhd and although its nice the speaker is awful. You can't hear the ring when its in your pocket. This for a premium media device is very sad. The sound quality is very tinny. Speaker is very important to me.
The defy is also ready for dropping or a bit of rain. I got bored of treating phones with such care.

I prefer vibro mode, so I don't care about how loud is the speaker
Could you please compare some staff like sound quality with headphones, overall performance, GPS, camera, and so on?

as it's pretty relevant to this topic and only slightly a thread ninja.
how does the defy hold up against just the normal desire? the defy actually appears to preform better(with launcher pro) so really what the desire has on it is better firmware support (being already 2.2) and not having this speaker problem
so really the defy for me is $11 dollars cheaper per month then the desire or the same price as the wildfire... what would you pick?

Yeah, yeah etc., etc... Well I have this BMW and I love the idea that I can chuck my Defy in my sleeve pocket etc. no matter the weather. I'm thinking of making a holster for it on my snowboard.

nice moto nice defy

So camera, screen, sound via headphones, camera are better on dhd. More likely to get gingerbread quicker. Dhd has faster processor. Dhd has sense. 4.3 screen.
Costs more.
Defy has better speaker, ruggedised.
GPS same.
Its a question of what you need or want not which is better.
Defy is a great mid range phone
Dhd is a great top end phone with a very poor speaker.

Hi
Just a little mistake here.
DHD a LCD screen, no AMOLED, even not SLCD i though

Dont worry about the price, buy a phone for what you want. I bought the defy purely for its smaller size and weatherproof. Its a gps on my mtb bike and motorbike and doesnt look like a tablet when held up like a phone...

The DHD has that big, beautiful screen going for it. The Defy has the same resolution hidden behind Gorilla Glass and at least twice the battery life. Had a regular Desire before I got the Defy and boy I sure don't regret making that switch! I never have to worry about my phone again, like when I was using Nokia dumbphones and featurephones

I had the same decision to make
. I am a big fan of HTC and their phones but I went for the Defy after holding the Desire HD in my hands. It is just too big, does not feel comfortable.
The other really big pro has been already mentioned: battery runtime ftw!
The water resistance is a nice plus for me, which I hopefully does not have to test (even though I already lost two phones because of water damage).

I was wrong, and you too xD
According to I´m reading desire HD has a SLCD screen... the defy yes, it has only LCD screen. But this is not very important to me... You only see the difference if you compare them next to each other...
Thanks for point my mistake, I thought than DHD had Amoled screen, but seems that samsung can´t fabricate Amoled screens to all...

No, it's just a standard LCD, not S-LCD.

thanks!

hey guys,
just wanted to say thanks for this discussion ... i own a hero :=)) great phone, but somethings wrong with the 2.2 roms.. they got battery drain when screen is on (also read launcher pro can cause, but not verified.. but will check it with my DEFY)...
i ordered (DEFY) the phone today, and also wanted to say (owned a DHD for 1 week, but provider had bad signal strengths so i redigned...) ...
i really loved the DHD because it was a pleasure to hold it in my hands :=) but personally after bringing it back, 2 days over.. it thought it has also been the right decision because it's just too big. like mentioned above, mountainbiking, running, everything critical, slip one time. and the phone is gone. that's for sure.
so... :=) for now i've been engaged with HTC, blackstone (touch HD - winMo) before - great phone, htc hero now... (also great phone..) - DHD shortly--- (tooo big) -- now a Motorola DEFY... i'm really exited how everything will be.. but :=) i've found out that everything of HTC Sense can be replaced by something similar (some even better)... so I'm really looking forward to use my DEFY with launcher PRO + snowstorm (perfect weather widget) ... :=) and I'm sure I'll get happy.
Just hope the performance rulez it all :=) (read that the 800mhz processor is quite compareable with an desire 1000mhz processor.. some experiences?)
maybe also SetCPU useable?
I'm exited guys :=) and just wanted to say thank you for your nice discussion (was really interesting to read) .. and it became quite a text .. just for saying thanks ... :=PP
best regards
greets,
mike

[Q] Why is the Defy considered a mid range device?

Is it because of the processor? If you overclock to 1ghz goes that make the phone a high end device?
Is it the fact that the phone doesn't come with a lot of memory?
How is the Vibrant, G2, MT4G better? I'm upgrading my phone and am trying to pick one.
Thanks for the help.
Gabe
The myTouch 4G, Vibrant and G2 are high-end because of the features.
The camera on the DEFY blows, it sucks so bad compared to the camera and it's interface on my Samsung Vibrant. The myTouch 4G/G2 aren't much better when it comes to the camera, though..
Regular LCD vs SLCD and SAMOLED displays.
Better graphics power.
Better multimedia on the Vibrant.
etc. there are multiple reasons why, most things are just a bit better on the "high-end" devices.
What he said - the camera is fairly useless. The screen is of normal type - not having experienced anything 'special' I think the screen is beautiful but I guess AMOLED would have me rethink that.
The build quality is not 'premium' - get an anodized aluminium HTC in one hand and this plastic phone in the other and you'll quickly decide which aesthetic and feel you prefer. On the other hand I find it much more attractive than, for instance, the Sony Ericsson piano gloss plastic phones.
Other than that, well, I guess it's been crippled like some ridiculous teenphone with useless BLUR, but I don't know - do the Droids have this as well?
To me it's more than good enough but this is my first Android device so what do I know?
One thing, it's IP67 rated - dustproof, water resistant, scratchproof Gorilla Glass.. No other smartphones have any IP or MIL rating at all let alone IP67.
Simple because whoever made thay statement/assessment in the first place had been smoking crack. With a little tweaking it is an an amazing device.

I just can confirm that
To the statement above, the device is plastic, but that's also the reason why its so light weighted my old hero was smaller but also heavier ... that s strange.. :-\
And for the camera. I just use my phone to take photos for three generation of mobile phones now... and really got Jo idea what you can't like with the camera. (there are few options, but the pictures are taken fast and Sharp, what more to expect ?)
Under the line, I'd say: It's a great device. And as mentioned many times before.. maybe just MOTOblur makes the whole device.. midRange .. :-\
One more thing, HTC devices maybe feel better (from the case or somehow, I know what u mean, but I really like how my defy feels, backside really feels good, front is just display )
But the thing: this device just looks male :-D
That's the reason why ive chosen it compared To the HTC desire and many other devices out there

I would like to see all those hi-end phones get dropped in water, and still work. Or get tossed around by a small child in a sandbox, and have no scratches on it. To me the Defy is very hi-end because of its everyday usefulness. No need to baby it.

doesn't hold a candle to my G2, but with root and recovery, milestone OC, and blur removed, its a nice device, if you owned a "high end" device you would see the difference, but all in all, thanks to DEV and Chef support this is a really good pone

Very solid and it does give me the premium feel previous HTC. One thing that I still not used to it is how light it was compared to my Desire HD, it is very light.
The matte surface on the back really gives a very nice feel to touch on it. For me, it is even better than the feel of the rubbery Desire. I'm glad that the gloss surface at the side of the phone looks way better to what we seen in the web.
The screen is simply AMAZING. I don't really know how to describe it but it is just amazing. The color really pops up and the view angle is superb. The images seem like floating on top of the screen. I think this is due to the effect of optical lamination. When I'm looking back on the DHD, it looks like a crap. LOL
Again, there is no Beats Audio earphone bundled in my region. TBH, I don't really mind about that as I prefer to use a bluetooth earphone solution. The earphone bundled is the same as seen in previous unboxing videos
I didn't tested the thoroughly but I transferred a song and play with the music player. At least the sound quality is way better than my current Desire HD. I'm not really a hardcore music listener but I can hear there is some bass from the speaker. Haven't test the ringing tone thou.
Sense 4.0
As mentioned before, Sense 4 is very lite on this incarnation. It is very snappy and fast. As I navigate and pane around the settings, it is very smooth and it doesn't lag at all. Maybe I still haven't fully loaded it, and it might not be as buttery smooth as WP7 or iOS, but it does better than the previous version
I noticed that in the confirmation pop up box, in DHD, it will place the "OK" button on the right and "CANCEL" button on the left. This is different in Sense 4. Almost in all confirmation pop up box, the "OK" is on the left while "CANCEL" is on the right. Take some time to get used to it
I downloaded Whatsapp purposely just to confirm how is the legacy menu button gonna looks like. As shown in the above image, it will look as this way. Well, not too bad thou as compared to the first few screenshot we saw previously
The keyboard is better compared to Sense 3.5. The typing experience is better compared to the one I have in DHD. The 0.4" really makes some impact on the typing experience
I dig through the setting and under "Development" section, there is a lot of settings available for the user to play with especially with the graphics and animations. I haven't really have the time to play with it. I attach the screenshot for your reference.
Camera
Not really having a good picture taking skills, I just snap 2 pics I found in my room for your reference. It has been shot with sharpness -2 as I feel that the default setting is applying too much of sharpness.
I haven't test the USB OTG Host function and lots of things I still haven't play with it. If you have any questions just let me know I will do my best to answer as I'm really tired now (its 2am here) plus tomorrow I will be damn busy. So I apologize if there are things that I can't reply immediately but I will do my best to answer you guys
How's the web browsing experience ? Tegra 2 offers pretty smooth web browsing for me! I guess it's the same for Tegra 3
How's the sound quality with headphone attached and loudness of the speaker ?
Is the reception of the phone good! Some guys in this box said that the reception is a little bit weak compares to previous models
More importantly, what about the battery life ?
I'm very excited to see this phone in action, my region offers the beat solo headphones out of the box

Bro, too early to tell about battery life. Still charging the phone. The experience that I have with surfing the net is very smooth, it loads faster compared to my DHD which connected to the same router on the same website.
Reception is depending on your coverage area. I just talk on the phone for less than 2 minutes. So far the call is clear

Will do so by tomolo..packing my stuff now preparing for sleep..i will get you guys on the comparison of the screen brightness as well
As promised, some of you requested for the comparison pic between HOX and DHD. Some of you worried about the camera bump. Don't worry about it, it is not as protruding as you seen in the web. The first pic might be able to show you about it. If you are coming from 4.3" then you don't have to worry about it, the slimness and the curve screen on the side will give you a very pleasant feeling while operating the phone
Comparison of the screen brightness between HOX & DHD. Haven't have the chance to test outdoor yet, that's why I put both the phone at the window (is quite cloudy here, so you might not be able to see the difference clearly). On the right both are set to auto brightness while on the left both of set to maximum brightness
any bad stuff?
@knoxploration,
your requested regarding the car mode. I took some screenshot for the "Home" screen, call screen and navigation setting screen. As you can see, there is an option for you to choose the default navigation software. Currently I don't have any other navi software installed yet besides the pre-installed HTC navi and google maps. I will try to install some other offline navi maps and report back. Btw, any bro here if have a good suggestion of navi apps for the hd sreen of our HOX, please do PM me, really need it very much. Not sure those installed in my DHD can be used or not.
thanks for the DHD pics mate, i'm surprised its actually a bit narrower
@xmoo,
what bad stuff you are referring? can be more specific? So far the handling experience is very great and smooth. I can't comment on battery thou as it needs few cycles to reach it max capacity.
ps : Some of my frens and my sister & bro who saw it and asked me "Why is this Iphone so big and so much more pretty than Iphone 4s"..my reply is please compare and insult my HOX with the iphone...haha

Definitely - according to the specs, the One X should be 2mm wider I think, but if I look at those pics, it looks as if the One X is clearly not as wide as the DHD. That would be awesome. 4.7" screen and only a little bit longer? Very nice
@william
Could you confirm that the DHD is actually wider than the One X?

[Q] Looking for a decent replace for my EVO 3D

Hey guys, first of all I'd like to apologize for posting a question thread in a general section.
I've had EVO 3D GSM for almost a year (9 dec 2011 is a date of purchase) and now it is time to move on. Poor baby was a victim of numerous experiments, including dangerous ones. Evo 3D brought me into android ROM development and I really, really love this phone. But it has lots of marks and scratches, aluminium rim is bent, battery doesn't last longer than 4 hours, digitizer is almost dead, registering random touches while the phone is sitting on the desk not being touched by anyone, sometimes there's an opposite situation: you can lean your whole capacitive corpse on the screen and it wouldn't even suspect anything.
Recently I've got Nexus 4 16gig from my friends for a couple weeks of testing. I was excited as duck, brand new google nexus phone blah blah blah... It ended up being returned to where it came from. Surprisingly, I didn't like it at all. It looks very nice, the glass on the screen is very thin, the glass on the back looks classy, it weights like a solid phone not like a cheap-o toxic chinese toy (this is a perfect description for GNexus' weight IMO). But... Touchscreen responsiveness is awful. I mean, yes, it's better than my iPAQ PPC bought back in 2003, but come on, even the possessed digitizer on my e3d is capable of registering touches more accurately and hell of a lot faster. The glass panel on the back looks sexy, but it is ducking slippery! A couple days ago n4 just slipped away from my hands in the subway, it was saved by the god himself and by tight 3.5mm headphone jack. And, of course, 16gb is not enough at all.
Enough of that, I suppose. The question is, is the One X a good thing to switch to? Are there any problems with this sexy phone, are there any disappointments waiting for me after purchasing the One X?
And another question, is the One X+ that much better than OX? In my region the price difference is above $300, I don't want to waste any money on some useless stuff.
Thanks in advance, folks. My daily driver smartphone is a very important part of my life, and I don't want to rush.
And if you think that One X isn't a good thing to have, which android smartphone would you suggest?
It is onex forum. So yeah, I can definitely recommend this phone as I am using it since April and still love it, I don't even think about upgrading any time soon.
Some people may tell you wait till new phones are introduced which is happening pretty soon, just couple of months. But if wait for a phone you can spend all your life for waiting for a perfect phone without having one

@ the right price, I think you can't go wrong with the HOX. IMO the X+ isn't worth the price diference.
Comparing it to its arch rival (SIII), i think the HOX, with its amazing looks and Sense will always win the day. But thats in my case, I really like sense... (some love it, some hate it)
And now that I've bought a Tablet, the HOX battery is just right for me, since the everyday usage as dropped a little.
Adding that to being unbrickable (no S-OFF) and the absolutely awsome support here in XDA, its just great for a stock (or not to adventurous) folk like me.
Wrapping up, I think it is one of the best daily driver smartphone: great looks and feel, awsome Sense experience, and (at least in my circle) its really exclusive and as the WOW effect.
I upgraded from the EVO 3d to one x and I am disappointed its little to nowhere faster at most things, though the camera is miles better I think beats is a huge step down from srs equalizer too its not as good. Beats and SRS are just stock equalizers with fixed preset. Yes, there may be some good audio chip or something, but come on, I'm using PowerAMP atm and I have a custom preset for every song in my playlist. Idc about beats or srs. So despite that the only thing that disappointed you after switching from e3d is the fact that one x turned out to be less stress-resistable in a single occasion?

Could you tell me a little more about HOX+? I'm aware of the fact that its CPU is overclocked a bit, and it has 64gig of memory (which is twice as much as I need), and it has some badass red styling, but despite all that, is there really any significant difference?

I just used it for a little, and the main edge for me was the 4.1 in it. Now that the JB update is finally rolling out for the HOX, that edge is gone (I repeat, this is just my opinion). I prefer the HOX Styling (really disliked the red capacitive buttons).
And pairing that to the fact that the price diference is quite large, paying so much for an incremental update doesn't make sense to me.
The Tegra 3's newer version and the 64Gb of storage are not worth the extra cash IMO. As the real world tasks and usage are just as great on one handset as on the other...

Lol, the only thing that I could've been thinking of after seeing red capacitive buttons on Sensation XE was "WHYYY~"
Well that's enough for me. One X it is, just placed an order for a sexy white 32gig version

Hi,
in MY OPINION, I think it's a good change, i've tooked the same path, owner of HTC EVO 3D for almost a year with almost the same problems as you, and now at 1 week ago changed for this ONE X, I did not went for HTC ONE X+, because it does not compensate the money, I'm very happy with the phone.
Go for it.

Also guys, a very quick question: I've just heard that it is possible that white HOX comes in several finishes, including 100% gloss and 100% satin. Is it true? It doesn't seem to be true though...

No not just the eq, it's more the whole package. Also I hate that YouTube stutters at times, no matter if the video is fully buffered or not, audio also stops when a notification noise comes on which is poor, don't get me wrong its great phone and I wouldn't have anything else but the one x+ at this present time, but from my view the jelly bean update adding USB otg and non moving wallpaper when moving screens is a big step forward, so it's a good choice if you need a phone at the present time and won't wait to get one

Considering a oneplus one instead...

Well this is a real first world problem. I love my G3 so far but seems like development is really slow. I'm contemplating trading it for a oneplus one. I like all the variety and software options it has. The possibilities seem to be endless just like the n5. And the oneplus looks like a nice choice as far as hardware goes too. Not sure what to do here.
I was thinking the same thing, but i doubt the LGs flagship is going to go unnoticed. Im sure the devs are hard at work with new roms, etc.
Plus, do you really want to have to beg for an invite, in order to buy the OPO?
Yeah, the invite system really pissed me off! I got an invite out of the blue on day. I didn't realize you had 24-hours to buy the phone when claiming the invite.
Anyway, I click the claim button in the email and the 24-hour buy ticker goes off. I didn't have the money at the time. I'd been waiting for that phone for ages.
Needless to say, here I am with the G3.
I have two of the OnePlus's I'm getting rid of. Not a bad phone, but i prefer the g3.
There is going to be a significantly higher rate of development for the OnePlus One than the G3 simply because it's more of a phone developers will flock to.
However, I initially had the OnePlus One and sold it to a coworker to buy the G3. I couldn't be happier.
Here were my thoughts between the two...

That's a petty good and thorough review. My biggest concern with the device is the quality control issues. I don't want to get one with a bad screen and be stuck. I hear their customer service is just terrible.
Dude just stick to the G3.

My brother's oneplus slid off from knee height (basically out of his pocket in his shorts when he Sat down) after a few days of ownership. Screen is done, 50% of it doesn't work. Light crack on the side of the phone. No damage on bezel.
I took the risk and dropped my nexus 5 a few times from similar height before my jump and it survived each one.
Food for thought.
Oh and I also had a OnePlus. While I did really like the phone, his drop and the customer support issues I've been reading about among other little things made me uncomfortable keeping the phone long term. Also the g3 being the same screen size feels a lot better in the hand. I can essentially use it one handed while the 1+ proved to be more challenging.
Just be patient? The****

OPO is overhyped crap. You should be considering the nexus 5 or g3...

Two days after I bought my G3 I got an invite to buy an OPO. So I ordered one with the though that I'd pick one and either return my G3 to T-Mobile or sell the OPO on eBay. I used the two side by side for about two days and it was honestly real tough decision. I came from a Nexus 4 then 5 so I love vanilla Android with my own added flavor. So with that in mind a lot of things really sparked my interest in the OPO once I installed slimkat and set it up. Then after using for a day the battery seemed to drain faster than my G3. The camera seemed comparable so I decided to really test them. I went out driving and while I don't suggest driving and taking pictures I did. And this is where the G3 starts to walk away with my needs. The cameras focus is so much quicker and this resulted in much better pictures. Given that I have kids and they don't stay still I need a camera that meets that need. I sacrificed camera with the Nexus phones and I want about to do it again.
And finally, I've grown fond of the buttons and and phone just feels much smaller in my hand than the OPO. The G3 is actually a little wider but the OPO is much taller. I noticed no difference with the screen resolution. However, the OPO played sound in videos very loud so that's a plus. But the G3 is sufficient in that department. So I sold my OPO and am still rocking the G3.
So. If you must have aosp the OPO will always run it better. If you want a better camera, battery life and slightly smaller feel stick with the G3.

Thanks for this, I have a couple of questions for you but first background.. I bought a G3 a couple of weeks ago. Excited I brought it home, rooted, setup and started snapping pictures of my daughter playing at night in the living room. Instantly my heart sank. They were fuzzy, blurry and overall crap. My G2 and N5 dominated the G3 quality. I continued to use it for a couple days but the picture quality in low light just sucked so I returned it. Finally got an invite to Oneplus and now have that. Camera quality seems much better in low light. Daytime out side pictures are fine with pretty much any flagship phone you buy these days, my issue is with indoor low light. I mean, I have the lights on but its not sunlight. Anyways, I am not happy with the yellow tint along the bottom of the phone nor the size, it's just too tall. Plus the lack of accessories gets me.
With that said, does your G3 take good indoor low light pictures? Does it focus fast and snap clear pictures? I'm not looking for photographer quality here, just not fuzzy and blurry. When I returned it the guy offered to exchange and I opted not to but now I'm kicking myself wondering if I just had a bad device so that is why I'm here asking you.
Almost no light at all.

Because T-Mobile refuses to make it a flashable package, the OPO will never have support for Wi-Fi Calling. That's something to consider when deciding between these devices.

It's not as simple as you think. It's not just an application. It's built into the modem, the framework, settings etc. They would have to build an update package for each phone. T-Mobile doesn't have the rights to do this. Just like with the iPhone, the manufacturer has to build the technology into the software package. So, it's on Oneplus to build it to work with WiFi calling. Just like it would have been on LG and Google to build it into the Nexus line and Apple to build it into the iPhone.
NOW, it is on T-Mobile to request this but this can delay phone release times and increase overall costs. But specifically, with the Oneplus, this phone is not sold by T-Mobile so they have not vested interest in trying to get them to include the technology.

In some cases I found the OPO to perform better in low lighting. But it was inconsistent for me. Many times, it would not focus. Most if my pictures are taken indoors without flash. What surprises me is you compared the G3 to the Nexus. Imho the G3 destroys the Nexus in low light settings.

To be honest I can't really remember the N5. I just can't remember thinking it was that bad. Plus it costs half the price of the LG. At $600 I expected way more. Maybe I'll buy a used one on eBay and see how it goes. Thanks for the response.

I think if you're happy with the OPO you should stick with that one. All these new phones are so close in regards to specs and abilities it just comes down to preference. I was so close to taking my G3 back to T-Mobile that I made it to the store to return it, but I didnt have the original receipt so I had to go home, but upon testing it a little longer I decided to sell the OPO on eBay for a small markup.
if top quality low light photos are a priority, the HTC M8 is the way to go...
I have been through a ton of phones, flagship mostly and this hands down takes the best pictures in daylight and low light situations. I have no issues at all with the camera.
The battery life is another thing, not terrible, but not the greatest. Definitely miss my flex in that regard, granted it was a bigger battery.
Overall it's a good phone.

[Q] G3, S5 or something else?

[I've posted this question elsewhere, but as it's relevant to both the G3, S5 and general android forums I thought I'd crosspost. Please tell me if this is unacceptable and I'll remove it]
I'm finally moving on from my original Samsung Galaxy Note, and I'm debating what device to move to. This will be my one and only phone, so I'm looking for something well rounded.
After reading reviews of a lot of the best phones on the market, I'm leaning towards a LG G3. It looks and feels fantastic, has a really good camera in both day & night conditions, the screen is awesome, it *seems* to hold up underwater (in spite of no official IP rating), the battery life seems pretty good, etc.
That said, some of the overheating issues I've read about are worrisome - as well as a few other stability issues... I'm not sure how much stock to put in that.
So I'm also considering the Samsung Galaxy S5. It doesn't feel as great, the screen isn't as mindblowing - although it is more vibrant, the camera doesn't do as well in the dark, it seems like one of the most durable phones out there, etc.
Is the S5 significantly more stable than the G3? How do the development communities compare - are they on par in that regard? Can the stability / overheating issues of the G3 be successfully mitigated with tweaks? Is it going to be a nightmare to wrangle into shape?
Or is there another AT&T phone that you'd recommend? Other phones on my radar include the Flex, Note 4, M8 and OnePlus One...
I guess I'm looking for something that's going to hold up as a primary phone for a long time, both in terms of durability and specs, without becoming a nightmare to manage as my Galaxy Note has... and aside from that, my priorities include battery life, stability, video recording (especially in dark conditions), processing power, screen, look / feel, etc. in roughly that order.
The G3 is, in my book, definitely the most charismatic phone this year. Great camera, okay screen, great handling, even with one hand. The battery life could be better, but then again, I use it heavily, so it's to be expected...
It gets warm on occasion, rarely now since its been upgraded to the 10H version tho, I don't mind it, every phone will get hot while performing dual window Chrome/Whatsapp while multitasking between a few other apps in one of the windows and playing music in the background.
I was waiting for the Moto X to take his spot in the charisma department but that didn't happen..
HTC M8 is the smoothest, has the best build and sound but lacks in the cam department, which is a no go for me.
The S5 is the best all rounder, but has nothing special about it, and I do mean nothing. Sure, you get the fingerprint and heart rate thingy, but, as with all those Samsung features , who really uses them effectively from day to day life. And the touchwizz... Every Samsung phone looks and feels the same lately(phonebook delay).
That said go with the Z3.
It's cool, it has a good camera, feels and looks premium(even tho I don't care about trivial stuff like that), can go underwater, has 3gigs of ram, a nice processor, good screen, good speakers, and a UI that works just fine(I hate the Sony "windowed cheap UI" xD)
Oh, and to top it all, best battery life there is..
And if you got tired of a big screen with the Note, like my brother did, you can always go with the Z3 compact, even better battery life and all the same stuff inside.

Hmmm... I wasn't really putting much consideration into the Z3, as it's not offered by AT&T and I'm eligible for an upgrade from them, meaning the G3 is only $199.99.
Can you think of any way to get a Z3 that would be operational on AT&T for a similar price? I don't want to switch carriers, as AT&T has the best reception in the areas I live / visit and I'm still grandfathered into their unlimited data plan.

My biggest concern with the G3 overheating would be the possibility of setting up my phone to take a video of a concert I'm performing in, and returning to find it had overheated, shutdown and I had lost the footage. I will say that the G3's screen seems much more handleable in the palm of my hand than the Note, but anything up-to-and-including the size of my Galaxy Note is more than fine with me, and I'd *possibly* be fine with going a bit bigger.

I'm not really interested in the fingerprint sensor or heart rate monitor -- they feel like gimmicks to me. The leading features for the S5 in my book, over the G3, are the durability (waterproof; SUV-crush-proof; etc.), screen brightness / color, and the fact that it doesn't seem to overheat... at least not as badly?
I may be wrong on that last point, but it *seems* like a more reliable phone as such. Am I right in that assumption?

Okay, can't help you with this one since I live in Croatia. But I suppose $200 is a bargain on the G3
My biggest concern with the G3 overheating would be the possibility of setting up my phone to take a video of a concert I'm performing in, and returning to find it had overheated, shutdown and I had lost the footage. I heard of that happening to a lot of people at the beginning; has the 10H version taken care of that??
On this part, I decided to do a little test.
I went and shot 3 uHD(4k) videos one after another. (Three 5 minute videos, since the shooting limited by the software to prevent overheating) The temperature outside was 20-ish°C(68°Fahrenheit), and while the phone did get quite warm, it did not shut down.
And on that matter, I never encountered a shut down due to the temperature or any other unknown reason.
Why did I mention the temperature?
Well you see, I bought it 2 months ago, and when I got it, it had 10B version on, and the temperatures outside were hellish... 35°C (95F) or more... That didn't help cooling it off if it ever got hot.
Nah, I like big screens
I will say that the G3's screen seems much more handleable in the palm of my hand than the Note, but anything up-to-and-including the size of my Galaxy Note is more than fine with me, and I'd *possibly* be fine with going a bit bigger.
Yeah, I'd say it's a lot more handleable than the Note, since the Note has a wicked screen ratio, it's quite wide...
I'm not really interested in the fingerprint sensor or heart rate monitor -- they feel like gimmicks to me. Well, I really can't say much on the reliability part.
But in my opinion, waterproofness and dustproofness are good, really good, but not a must, since my phone has no time to get dusty(Bahah), and I'm not one to shoot underwater videos... When on the beach, swim, dive, jump off of cliffs, enjoy it.. The phone can take a day off, even though not everyone agrees.
I'd say the S5's got a better screen, but it comes down to amoled/ips preference... It most certainly is brighter, has a better contrast and colors. The only thing in that department the g3 has got going is the 2k mega giga user high pixel density beast(nahh) of a screen...
And i love it. It's got this mild tone to it, might sound crazy, butI feel like I'm looking at a painting from time to time.

So the video recording time is limited to only 5 minutes per shot? That's... pretty unideal. I would like a phone that I could setup before an hour or two long set, and leave there recording to capture a concert I play. I've done this with my Note before in the days before it deteriorated (with the charger plugged in and on airplane mode), and it usually did fine...
Are there work arounds for that 5 minute recording limit - ideally ones that won't make the phone overheat? Are there similar limits on the recording capabilities of other phones out there these days?

I just did some research and learned that the S5, while prettier at first, is actually creating inaccurately eye-popping colors - so I'm less interested in it now. On top of that, I hear that the quality of AMOLEDs degrade over time?
The G3 - is it bright enough to be pretty effective outdoors in daytime? I'm hearing mixed things about that...
G3 also has lags and screen brightness goes down automatically when overheated just a little bit.
It's annoying.
Also the halo effect issue and oversharpening, less screen brightness, less battery, less performance, etc.
SGS5 is better, although G3 has better design.

I believe that the time limit is only set to uHD videos, you can still shoot HD or FHD(30 and 60fps via some modifications) for as long as you've got space on your storage.
I'm not sure about other phones but ultra HD takes 1 gigabyte of space for 5 minutes of video, so time limit aside, that's a but much as it is..

Well, they say that ips lcd screens mature over time, meaning that the colors settle, and they get better, be it in colors or brightness, I'm not sure.
The S5, as every Amoled screen does create oversaturated colors, they do degrade as time passes and there is also the burn in issue along with that.
But! You can set it to, I don't know what's it called, ?natural? mode, that displays the colors accurately, and quite precisely at that.
And let's be honest here, no one buys an Amoled phone screen only to put it to natural, they like their colors to POP...
Yep, the G3 is bright enough for outdoor use, as I've put mine in direct sunlight and browsed the Web "easily", no real issues there, I'd say like most phones.

I upgraded to a G3 a month ago. My previous phone was a Galaxy Note 2. One of the main reasons why I didn't chose for a Samsung phone is the heavy usage of touch wizz on the system. The G3 is a great phone. Fast, good camera and great design. I recommend the G3.
Just a random dude passing by
Here's my opinion on this topic. I've been using my note 2 for about year and a half now. The phone is great and just keeps getting better, but I've decided that my next phone won't be this big. It's not bugging me that much but when I try to browse or do simple stuff with one hand I constantly have to "adjust" the phone. That being said I agree with marimo there that G3 is the most charismatic phone this year, but I'd definitely go with the m8 because it's just a brilliant phone in every possible way~ (with an OK camera). I would recommend you Note4 because it will probably be the phone of the year, but I like changes and I wouldn't buy another touchwizz phone at this point.
I hope that I managed to mess up your decision even more because that's just fun

I've owned galaxy s3 and s4. I moved on from the s4 to the G2 and never looked back. I got the G3 when it was released and can honestly say it's the best phone I've ever owned. LG knows what they're doing and you can tell they really listened to their customers and reviews with the software overhaul. The downside to the G3 atm is (unless you have T-Mobile or international) all we have is root. Now, let me say that even with only have root and xposed this device is insane. Once you greenify and Titanium freeze bloat the battery lasts a long time. I'm a heavy user throughout my day with downloading movies, internet, watching YouTube and sports highlights and have my screen at 55% with autobrightness active. I get an average of 5 and 1/2 sot and usually still have 40-50% battery left after I work 8 hours. I highly recommend this device. The screen is gorgeous. Its a very responsive device.
There are a few bugs that need a software update fix (aux/headphone system confusion - the device sometimes has issue deciding if the device is an aux cable or headphones. Sometimes it will connect and disconnect. Annoying.). There are some chrome issues as well but those seem to be chrome bugs and not G3 bugs.
I can't recommend this device enough. If you want to read something funny check out MacWorld's G3 v iPhone 6 comparison article. They admit the G3 is head and shoulders better and actually end the article with "which doesn't matter bc you're all buying iPhone 6 no matter what we say." made me laugh.
Yeah, I agree with Breaking, G3 is a great phone and after rooting, debloating, and tweaking, it's even better! My battery has settled and improved and the camera is insanely good. It heats up a little at times but clear recents and give it a quick rest is what I usually do, and never over 110f so not that hot.
I came from G2, Moto X, S4, Note 3 and Lumia windows phones before that and the G2 and G3 are my overall favs!

I'm sitting here with my old ass s4 which has a busted front glass piece but I did surgury on it and placed some tempered glass for a gangster (i've seen some harsh times) look.
In all seriousness I'm not liking my g3. I went from s3 --> s4 ---> g3
Phone is; fast, nice screen (although I prefer the color of an amolded OVER this QHD stuff. And for some reason my viper audio sounds wayyy better on my s4 mdk with hyperdrive running.
1. I prefer the smaller s4 size with better color OVER the big g3 high res screen
2. Sound mods sound better on my s4 and I'm big into music
3. MDK bootloader means I could flash flash away. This g3 is so locked down its not even funny
4. I honestly miss the TW interface and how well samsung has integrated their software with the Android OS. It just seems to flow better in terms of galary sync, contact sync, (g3 contact sync screwed up my contact list somehow)
I find too often I am on the verge of dropping this phone as I reach across to hit buttons on the far side of the screen. Call me lazy but I could simply navigate and swype type faster on my s4 due to the smaller screen. was nice
If you dig movies and reading, g3 is nice, but colors are bland and poop. yes. poop. amen. goodnight

Well that is what anyone coming from an Amoled would say. Aaand should not be accounted for!
My brother also prefers Amoled ones, while I prefer Ips panels.

Indeed I prefer Amoled panels, but HTC One, Z3 and even LG G2 have better panels than the g3. This is a fact. I'm not saying that G3 's panel is bad, but it just lacks compared to other flagships. It's just like iPhone 5 camera is weaker compared to most android flagships but it's still a very good one.
The bottom line is, G3 's screen is good but not among the best.

If you like the heartbeat sensor and the fact that s5 is unbreakable go for the s5 (take a look here at 05:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKkJdstQKsM compared to a g3 drop test 01:15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1kVNo6ars8)
If you want a fast phone and the best camera ever created for a smartphone go for the Z2.
G3 might has the best screen. 1440p is quite impressive as a feature but take in mind that if you put a g3 with a 1080 smartphone side by side and you play the same video ( a 4k at 60fps) the difference isnt so noticeable, the video looks the same at both smartphones. Also i dont know your opinion about flashing custom roms etc but take in mind that the G3 is heavy loaded with useless bloatware (compared to a Z2 which comes almost clean) plus LG keeps its bootloader locked. So until a way is found to unlock or bypass the bootloader (if they ever find one) you either have to manually debloat (which may affect the stock rom's stability) or you have to get used to a heavy loaded phone which is hiding its true potentials.
Finally every smartphone gets hot at some point . I dont have particular problems with my G3 but i remember my tablet was feeling like it was going to catch fire when i was playing plants vs zombies 2.

I agree with you. The G3 display is the worst regarding colors. So weak and bland.
