I've been searching arround but can't find a solution for my issue; i have a rooted desire, with a stock rom with a modified kernel (for the battery fix); i got an OTA but i can't seem to apply it. I've even toggle dthe signature (and the other thing you can toggle, can't rememebr what its called!) through recovery but even then the installation gets aborted.
How can i apply the OTA? i don't mind loosing root 'cause it's easy enough to do if i want it again.
And i know i can just flash a newer rom but from my experience (winmo), if i start flashing roms, i'll never stop!!!
UPDATE: Ok, now i've messed up; I restored my previously backed up version (old kernel), then rebooted the phone, istalled the update and now it just boots onto htc splash screen then reboots. I can boot into hboot but when i try and go into recovery i get the picture with the phone and a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside!
Help please!!!
****ING NOOBS!!!!
Seriously, read the other threadas about how you CANNOT APPLY AN OTA TO A ROOTED ROM WITHOUT CAUSING ISSUES!!!!
The point is it wasn't a rooted Rom, it was a stock Rom with a stock kernel but a rooted phone.
And seriously man, if you're not going to help just f*** off.

Hey..Stock Kernel+Unrevoked=Rooted Stock Rom..
It wont take in an OTA..
If you need the OTA, you do need to unroot.
Ok then, i obviously messed up.
Now i'm downloading a stock rom and i'm going to flashh the ruu throgh fastboot. Should that work?
Any advice would be really great guys, i just want to get this fixed.
It should..
Ok, i'll try that and report back in case anybody finds this thread helpful in the future!
Update: it worked! I'm out of the woods!!
Note to self (and anybody else who dosn't know): OTA are a big no-no for andt rooted device, no matter what rom or kernel you are running!!

Hi guys
I rooted my desire with unrevoked 3, and now I want to install stock froyo 2.2 update and it doesnt seem to work. It stops unpacking update after restart and shows exclamation mark and the droid, pressing menu from there brings up clockwork recovery. Is there any way to easily get this working or are the two options to either unroot or install custom rom?
In case of unroot, do I have to reflash the whole device loosing all settings and apps?
Hope someone has an answer for me, starting to get anxious to try the new rom out
Am having exactly the same issue. First I thought there was something wrong with the download as the Clockwork Mod says 'failed to verify full file'. Can someone help?
There are many stock roms with root access on this forum. Can't you just use one of them? If you flash the official upgrade, it will overwrite HBOOT as well, making it impossible to root the phone again until someone finds a new rooting method.

Ok first of all since you have rooted your phone, did you make a backup? Did you use nandroid? Have you made a gold card? Okay this what I did with my phone. Use the stock ROM from UK 1.21.405.2 WWE version and flash that to your phone (rooted of course with gold card).
Once you have flashed the UK ROM you should get a system software update. BUT......you have to make sure you download one of the rooted Froyo that can be found in xda.
DON"T DO WHAT I DID AND USED A STOCK (unrooted) Froyo! Because now I can't root my phone until someone in here finds a way and shares it.
Ok, how do I flash one of the rooted roms and how do I go about installing it and still keeping the data on the phone? I know there are guides all over this place, but I find them a bit hard to understand a lot of the time...
Happy to use a custom Rom. There are so many here though - any suggestions?

Try them all It's fun and addicting.
But will flashing a custom rom wipe the device, and how do I go about getting all apps, sms'es and so on back on the device? I guess nandriod backup has something to do with it, but how do I use it right?
Titanium backup in market. Restor all data and apps. thet use all.
Titanium backup won't run...
Hmm, titanium backup is installed but it won't run claiming I don't have root or busybox is not installed. Installed busybox installer, it says I have root, but stops saying it might not have enough privileges or it is unable to mount...
What next? Anyone got any bright ideas? Thinking more and more about wiping device with a clean RUU and getting the stock 2.2 update, but would like to keep all my info, sms's and so on...
Hey my evo doesnt want to update it!!?? why??? it reboots.. then i get the loading thing that is starting to do it. but then i get the TRIANGLE WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK.. with the little Android bOY.. LOL.. Could it be because its rooted? :/
HOPE ITS NOT BECAUSE OF THAT!! :/ HELP PLEASE
You don't need to install the latest 3.70 release...it is just a maintenance upgrade and has no improved functionality ...I hope you made a nandroid bc you can restore that to get back to your previous state. Good luck

Im new to all this man.. i dont really know anything.. like whats nandroid?? sorry for a stupid question.. but it says is has the Swype typing thing..
One more question.. what happens if i reset the Whole phone? like with the option it has to reset it to its FACTORY DATA RESET.. WILL IT WORK? OR WILL IT JUST NOT BOOT ANYMORE? OR WILL I STILL BE ROOTED? TH \ANKS
never accept a sprint upgrade with a rooted phone, it will mess your phone up...since you dont know what a nandroid is, im assuming you never made one..you are going to have to restore the phone back to original out of the box and a factory data reset is not the way to do it...
try this ...download the 3.30 release from this site and put in root of sd card http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
EDIT...in order for your phone to see this ..boot into bootloader..when phone is off, hold the volume button down and then hold the power button...the phone will see it and flash and update it...you will be back to stock and not rooted...you will have to re root the phone and then create a nandroid...
read this for more info on nandroid backup http://www.simplemobilereview.com/android-rooted-what-is-nandroid-backup/
to recap..never accept a sprint ota upgrade with a rooted phone, you will mess your phone up (as you already know) and once rooted, always create a nandroid...if you ever mess something up, you can restore that nandroid and restore your phone to working condition
also..once you are rooted and you want to update to the latest sprint over the air updates, search this forums for rooted stock RUU and you can then flash the lastest rom from sprint which is rooted...instead of trying to accept the OTA like you did
good luck
oK.. I WILL DO THAT WHEN I HAVE TIME.. LUCKLY MY PHONE DIDNT MESS UP TRYING IT.. LOL..
oK so installing the ROOTED STOCK RUU.. it will already be rooted, and i can still install sprints updates and upgrades with no problem correct?
THANKS FOR THAT BUD! SOUNDS EASY TO FACTORY RESET THE PHONE THANKS!!

Once you restore to factory non rooted and then re root...you have install the rooted ruu to get the latest sprint upgrades ...you don't accept any ota updates ever...just flash the most current rooted ruu and you will have the latest sprint updates

Self confessed complete Android/Evo newbie here... I didn't even know how to access the settings on the phone until about 30 minutes ago. I've been working with iPhones since day one and have jailbroken many releases, so I get the general idea. It's actually my wife's "work" Android, and a co-worker of hers rooted the phone at some point. She tried to install the auto-download 3.70.651.1, it failed, and she gave it to me. Pulling the battery and resetting seemed to get things back to working, but now I'm taking over management of this phone and getting things right.
Here is where the phone is:
Nag screens about updated software seen. Update now selected. Update seemed to fail with a triangle/exclamation point, phone locked.
Pulling battery gets a normal reboot. Still get nag screen about "do you want to update"
Settings/aboutphone/software info shows "Software number 3.29.651.5" after failed update
Here's what I've done so far:
On software update screen, chose to "delete update". Rebooted. No more nag.
Turned off "scheduled check" for system software updates in Settings menu.
Figured out how to boot into the recovery menu. Looks like "Clockwork backup" was already installed. (ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1)
Created a nandroid backup using clockwork.
Rebooted phone
Mounted the SD card to my Mac, backed up the SD card including hidden files.
Verified creation of clockworkmod nandroid.md5 file
A few questions:
Once you restore to factory non rooted and then re root...you have install the rooted ruu to get the latest sprint upgrades Is this really necessary? Can I not just find a latest/greatest "rooted ruu" and overlay it on top of my current configuration?
I see some threads with titles like "[ROM] joeykrim-SDX-original-5.1 Odex *Stock Rooted 3.70.651.1* Dec 15th 2010". Is this an example of a "rooted ruu"?
This thread says I need to install "unrevoked 3.2.1" and "unrevoked forever". I'm guessing these are different tools than whatever was originally used to root my phone. Any chance installing them will conflict?
If I go back to a stock 3.3 ruu, what happens to all the applications and info already on the phone? Does it just overlay the software, or wipe everything clean?
TIA for helping an Android/Evo newbie out!
Hi,
I've got an unbranded HTC One X with Root, CWM, Faux123 Kernel, Unlocked Bootloader. I'm on 1.28 Stock ROM and I'd like to update to 1.29.
I have tried removing root, flashing stock recovery, flashing stock kernel and updating via the OTA software update, but when it reboots into stock recovery, the loading goes to about one third, gets stuck and the icon in the middle becomes a phone with a red triangle.
I am asking on this forum as I know everyone on here (except me) is amazing!
What should I do? I don't want to erase all my data unless I absolutely have to or it is guaranteed to work.
Thanks a bunch,
ORStoner

Yeah, there have been several posts about this, even i had a problem with the 1.29.So far there is no actual solution and nobody knows for sure what is the problem. It has been sayd that has something to do with the CID because our phones are unlocked.
I've tryed everything and it didn't work, but all of the sudden, last night i was trying to install some mods, and one of them i didn't read the instructions and wasn't made for my stock 1.28 so the only solution i had was to do a nandroid backup. The only backup that i had in my phone was a 1.28 backup (loogicaly) but it was an old backup without the SU installed,it was basicaly a backup of the clean, stock 1.28 so i had to do that one.Atfer i done the backup the phone asked me again if i want to update...so i selected yes again.I don't know why but after doing this it worked like a charm, the new 1.29.401.11 was installed, after that i've reflashed CWM and SuperSU and now is working perfectly.
I think that the update stops because of a mod that you have on you'r phone or something.Did you installed any mod to it,like...3 dot removal for example? If yes, install the reverse (or do a nandroid backup if you have one) and basicaly it should work after that.
Thanks for your response.
Yeah, I did install that mod but I reverted it when I tried to update.
I also only have a nandroid for after I did everything
So I rooted my s3 t999 so I could get cyaneginemod. I used the flashing rom way, and it didn't work,(i used twerp recovery) it kept saying failed, and then I went to the easier way of installing the rom with, the new cyaneinge mod app, (I'm still rooted). Then after waiting for it too finish my phone rebooted, but cyaneinge was not on it, instead it came with a page that said root missing I clicked on yes fix the missing root, n well nothing happens I was back on touchwiz, superuser was their but Samsung Knox kept it from doing anything but I used supersu to disable it. I thought that knox was keeping the cyaneinge mod app from working, so I decided to downgrade to 4.1 when knox didn't exist, bless that time, but I couldn't since odin kept failing at flashing a stock rom, I did this soo msoon times I went through every firm ware n back to 4.3, it kept failing, im pretty sure its boot locked, but the root is also limited, every time I reboot n go to recovery n leave it asked me if it should fix the missing root, but yes or no, it wont change, n every time I reboot it says optimizing apps 0 of 48, it takes at least 5 min to go through. N after going through every forum, YouTube video, asking friends, I still can't find a solution, n im stuck on a screwd up root version of 4.3 plz help
You cannot flash an older firmware once you are on 4.3. What was the error message you got when flashing the rom?

i don't remember but I used twrp n as I Was flashing through rom it said failed, same thing when I flashed 4.3 stock firmware on odin later
If you have Kies that will give you problems with Odin. And make sure you have latest twrp
Reflash your current firmware with Odin. Then flash recovery, then the rom. No need to root first.
If the rom flash fails, you need to post the exact error it gives, and attach the recovery.log or theres little we can do to help.
We could start throwing out guesses, but there could be dozens of things potentiality causing your problem.
Sup, so in my last post I was told to read some info, get a better idea of what to do and how to move forward.. Problem being is, Where do I start? There is no actual help for the situation I am stuck in.
Im on a unlocked M8, no carrier version. I rooted the device and installed TWRP. This restored my Kit Kat 4.4.4 to 4.4.2. This is the google play edition, I believe.
Here is the Situation.
followed a youtube guide by "unlockr" which seemed to cover every aspect. after the root and with TWRP, phone bugged me to do a update to 4.4.4, I did, went back to TWRP, booted to system and got stuck in a loop.
I was recommended to delete the OTA file to stop this.. I did. Didnt stop the loop, bizarre...
Along this process, In fast boot menu my phone had a *tampered* label up top- further research this is nothing to worry about.
but without the OTA file, and just entering fastboot>twrp>system, this is where the boot loop still persists. S-On is back, no longer S-Off.
I've done my research etc and aware what needs to be done, but unsure on the safe methodology to reach this point. A friend who is helping me has better knowledge for SSung Galaxies and struggling to help me along.
He detailed I need to get back to 4.4.4(to stop this pissing 'you need to update your phone' pop up) - create a back up of this, then root and then from this point I can install custom roms ETC.
How do I install this, set up phone to a point Im happy, make the back up without the boot loop stopping me from doing so, then continue with experimentation etc...?
Like I said, Ive read plenty, but it doesn't help the situation I am in, so please, please don't just tell me to go educate my self, when there's no resources to help me with my problem. I still dont know which OTA is safe for me to use, or how to inject this without the bootloop ruining my life.. again.
P.S in work, Will reply when possible.

I've done my research etc and aware what needs to be done, but unsure on the safe methodology to reach this point. A friend who is helping me has better knowledge for SSung Galaxies and struggling to help me along. Samsung are completely different. I know as I've rooted my GF's and it was painful

There are a couple of things I'm not sure on, I think you have done the following so far
1. Unlocked using HTC dev
2. Rooted using the tool kit
3. Tried to install the OTA
4. Got a boot Loop
Is that correct?
Can you get into TWRP recovery?
Also you have a thread about this open already. Either delete that thread or this one.
As far as i know there is no way your android version would downgrade by flashing a recovery. Most likely is you were and still are 4.4.2 - Nope, Upon taking out the box on day 1, there was an update required and did it straight away.. then a smaller one. Guessing thats 4.4.3 and 4.4.4.
Golden rule - Never Never Never take an OTA when running a custom recovery - hahah, Ive established this now >.< I originally saw rooting as a "inject" sort of methodology.. before the os booted.. Thats not the case!
Also pretty sure flashing a recovery can't turn S-ON and you have to be 100% stock for that anyway (I believe) which you are not. How did you get S-OFF in the first place?? - I rooted following "TheUnlockr" video guide, It did say S-OFF, Bootloop and **** up with the OTA removed this I think. This was using the Hasoon2000 AIO tool.
Samsung are completely different. I know as I've rooted my GF's and it was painful - Good to know, I wont take too much advice from him, he did highlight a tool called Odin. Would that be any benefit to myself?

2. Rooted using the tool kit

4. Got a boot Loop
Basically.. yes.
Yes I can get into TWRP, but as I say, when I boot to system, this is where the loop starts.. phone starts up normally.. gives me 1min before restarting over and over.
I am sorry, Im aware that another topic is open. I did try to close it, dont have permissions on account. havent used forums in a few years and its all over the shop now hahaha.
Sorry for late reply.. hectic couple of days.
