Desire broken? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I flashed a modified framework-res.apk I got from the emulator (using the new Gingerbread) and flashed it to Oxygen 1.0. I have a GSM, AMOLED Desire.
Now my sdcard doesn't get recognized anymore and the device isn't able to connect to O2 Germany. When I try to connect the phone to my PC (Windows) I get a message that Windows wants to install a "Qualcomm CDMA technologies MSM" driver.
I still can boot the phone up, I can get into recovery (AmonRa 2.0.0) and fastboot.
Can anyone help me?

Flash a stock ROM - ignore the Windows driver thing, that's to do with a modem if you Google it. Why you'd take something from Gingerbread and try it on FroYo is beyond me - super rookie mistake right there!!

1. It only was the framework-res.apk and I only took the images from it.
2. I don't have access to my sdcard. Is it still possible to flash a stock ROM?

Try flashing a rom via fastboot.

As you are on o2 Germany, grab this RUU:
http://www.o2online.de/nw/support/downloads/software/htc/htcdesire/htc-desire.html
and reroot via unrevoked, gonna delete everything on your device but should work, you might want to take your sd card out of the phone before doing this just in case anything weird happens ;-)
best regards

That's the same as the o2 UK RUU on shipped-roms.com, would also mean no gold card needed to flash it

How can I get the ROM image as zip file? Is it the OTA update.zip?

Edit: Read the next post, some genius information, learned sth new there : >
If you're talkin bout my solution there is no way to get the zip, simply install HTC sync (yes, you have to -.-), fire up the executable and follow the on screen instructions.

It's the full RUU. To get the PB99IMG.zip from it do the following:
1. Run the RUU
2. Once you get to the first screen of the RUU, move it to the bottom of your screen and go to Start>Run and type
%temp%
And click OK
3. Browse to the newest folder created in the Temp folder
4. In the folder will be a ZIP file called Rom - copy this to your Desktop
5. Rename thr ZIP file to PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip) and copy it to the root of your SD card
6. Turn your phone on whilst holding volume down and follow the instructions

I think you don't have to flash a RUU rom. Flashing for example oxygen via fastboot again should do the trick.

Better to flash stock again to get everything working again then root again

I have the nandroid .img files of my system before I got those problems. Would it be possible to flash those somehow via fastboot?

For that method I said you do NOT need FASTBOOT. So long as you can connect you SD card to your PC to copy the ZIP file to it and turn your phone on into HBOOT then you'll be fine. If, and it's a big if, it doesn't read the card then yes you'll have to use FASTBOOT and an RUU - you don't need HTC Sync for that

Removed them from what? The PB99IMG.zip? Why on earth would you do that?!?!?! It's going to brick your phone!!
Just flash back to stock and start again

Currently it's just a piece of hardware that is only capable of using WiFi. I can't damage it more. But maybe you're right. I will install the unchange zip file.
But it would be interesting to know what went wrong. Why does using images from the Gingerbread emulator framework-res.apk for a FroYo ROM leads to such an result?

Because the rest of the ROM isn't Gingerbread. It's completely different. It's like me taking a customised framework file and trying to use it on a stock ROM. It doesn't work
Just go back to stock and start again. That way you know you've got a clean base to start from

Flashing Custom MTD/HBOOT
Once S-OFF is done, you are ready to flash the custom MTD/HBOOT. This step changes your internal memory partition table such that the new RoM can fit appropriately while leaving lot of room for user data. Once this is done, the old RoM will no longer work with the new layout of MTD. Before doing this step, ensure all your backups are in place and you have copied all necessary files to the SD Card. (The ROM .zip and the .zip for HBOOT if you are using method 2 below)
Before you do this, it is a good idea to ensure that your HBOOT download is correct and not corrupted. You can do this but checking the MD5 checksum of your download againts the MD5 checksum listed on alpharev site against the download. You can use any of the free tools available.
There are two ways to do this:
Method 1 - fastboot flash: If you downloaded the .img file linked earlier, use the following procedure to install it:
Power down the phone and turn it back on with the back button pressed down; you will see the "fastboot" screen,
From your PC command line, cd into the folder where your android-sdk is and cd into tools folder,
Connect the phone to PC via USB cable,
Run the following command: 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' replacing the .img filename with the appropriate path and file name (Eg: C:\Downloads\HTC\RoM's\bravo_alphaspl-cm7.img),
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot erase cache
Select bootloader then select Recovery (use volume up/down to change, and power key to accept the choice),
WARNING: Don't reboot your phone as yet because the MTD you flashed doesn't match your current Rom's layout so it will probably boot-loop or brick your phone,
Method 2 - HBOOT autoflash: If you downloaded the .zip file linked earlier, follow this method:
Rename the .zip file to "PB99IMG.zip" and copy it to the root of your SD card,
Shutdown your phone and restart it into HBOOT (Voldown + power button),
When the phone starts, it automatically will detect the zip file and install the MTD,
Now you can enter recovery and follow the procedure.
Note: Many users have had CID errors when trying this method so it is recommended to use Method 1 above

Download latest SDK and make sure you download Android SDK platform-tools revision 3, as well (in the additional packages)
Plus you must install the USB drivers from Unrevoked's site.

Ive done both of that,

Ive tried using HTC sync before trying unrevoked method and still had the same issue
Did you uninstall HTC Sync?
You have to install HTC Sync first, then uninstall it but leave the drivers installed. Then plug the phone in and do the process in the unrevoked-link which davebugyi has already posted.
The adpwinapi.dll-file is in "platform-tools" folder. Just copy that file into the "tools" -folder (the folder, where the fastboot.exe-file is located) and you're done.

Can anyone please explain the advantage of flashing a different HBOOT other than stock rooted one?
LOTS more available memory.
i have the oxygen hboot installed and with a dozen apps i still have 267mb free.
with the stock hboot i would be running out of memory by now

This memory would be RAM memory, right? We're not talking free space for installs, but rather free mem space for running apps?
Also, do I have to S-off to flash hboot? So far I only have rooted device (rooted using unREVOKED).
nope we are talking about space for installing apps
the oxygen hboot alters the partition sizes for system and cache.
whats left is the data partition and thats all all yours
Stock Hboot about 147mb data partition
new hboot 337
so 190mb more

[Q] CM7 HBoot

Hi.
When I flash PB99IMG_bravo_cm7.zip using CWM, I see about 2 lines of text flash by and then I am back at the main screen. The lines are too fast for me to read. Is this normal behavior?
Ik think you shouldn't flash this file.
You have to rename it to: PB99IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sd card.
Then when you volume down+power your device, you will be asked if you want to perform the update. I'd select 'yes'.

That's what I don't get. Some say I have to download and rename the zip file, other say I have to dload and rename the img file. I am lost here
From Alpharev.nl:
You can also download the corresponding PB99IMG zipfile, put it on your sdcard, and rename it to PB99IMG.zip. Then start the phone in HBOOT mode (VolDown+POWER) to flash the HBOOT without a PC. It is however still necessary to either restore your nandroid, or reflash your ROM after doing this. The partition LAYOUT has changed, the actual data still needs to be 'moved'.

[Q] soft brick & radio update HELP!

Alright so heres my issue. i soft bricked my htc desire hd. i have backups for my stock and cm7 on my sd card. but thats not the issue. every time i go to hboot it wants to update my radio b/c of the zip on my sd. updating the radio or not, it reboots right to the soft brick. so i cant restore any roms that were stable. any ideas to get past this?
Do u check for errors on eMMC? Maybe this is problem? (DHD and similiar phones, like Vision have eMMC chip, which like damage himself). On XDA you can find tutorial for check eMMC.
And next, what is version of your hboot, and radio which you want to flash are not older than existing radio? Maybe... You can try to flash via fastboot from ur PC, upload radio.img to folder with fastboot, open CMD, go in CMD to folder which have this files [for example, if u have this folder on desktop, in folder "fastboot", u should write "cd desktop\fastboot"], and next run "fastboot flash radio radio.img" [if ur radio file have radio.img name]
Sorry for my language. I'm very beginner in english, because im young, from Poland, and never learn english (only myself in home).

Sorry, I don´t actually get what the issue is. There´s not such thing as a soft brick..you are bricked or not. Anyway, just erase the PD98IMG.zip file in the sdcard, try to get to recovery and flash a custom rom. That should get you back to a working state...
Awwwww.... sorry, i misunderstood...
U DON'T want to flash radio...
Exactly as @up, you should delete all files what start name from PD98xxxx.xxx and go to recovery. Anyway, you can try to flash complete original ROM (BUT ONLY OLD VERSION!) via fastboot, should work
to be more specific..

If you don't have a card reader for your pc, you can remove the card from the phone until you get to recovery. After recovery starts you put the card back in the phone. Go to mounts and storage to mount the card. From there you should be able to restore whichever backup you would like.

[Q] Root on my HTC Desire

Hello!
I have my desire for more than a year, some time ago I attempted to root my phone but when using the revo ... there was no effect. I have to admit that I have no knowledge on this topic. I want someone to explain step by step what I need to do (preferably with pictures) and one by one said what happens (bootload and everything means nothing for me). I should add that I did not want to upload a new system just to get access to system files. I care about my android play in the substitution of system files. (I hope that after all this root can do).
Ur phone is s-off so to gain root all u have to do is flash superuser zip from recovery

You have to flash a new recovery. Try running revolutionary again, and let it install ClockworkMod.
To "make your internal memory larger", you will need an ext partition on your sdcard, then install a a2sd script.

Another way would be through fastboot. If you search the forums, you will find a "fastboot" tool. As I am posting from my phone, and because I suffer from a severe case of laziness, you will have to find it yourself.
Another thing you need is Android Usb Drivers. Google it, download the drivers, then plug the phone in the PC. Go to Device Manager, right click the Android 1.0, then click update , then select update drivers manually. Then browse to the folder you have the android usb drivers content in.
Try using this guide.

Revolutionary flashed the clockworkmod. What a surprise...
Moving on. Backing up from recovery does a full backup of the current state of the phone. If you do something wrong, this will restore your phone to the exact state that it was when the backup was made. Don't forget to make one before making major changes to your phone (rom flashing).
And yes, flashing that superuser.zip will give you root.
Before flashing a rom, after you did a backup, make a factory data reset, and delete cache and dalvik. This will make a clean installation of the rom.
To move your apps from one rom to another, i recommend using Titanium Backup, and restore your apps on the new rom.
Most roms require an ext partition on your sdcard. To partition sdcard, you must flash 4ext recovery. Do this by searching the play store for "4ext recovery control" the app will flash it for you. Then, backup your sd contents to your pc ( the partition proccess will format your sd), Then reboot into recovery, select tools, partition sd-card. Make an ext4 partition of 1gb, and for the rest select 0. Then, congratz, you have an ext partition. To use it, you must flash an a2sd script. I use "mounts2sd". Google it. This script will have to be flashed to any rom you install, every time, unless the rom already has a script built in.
Then you're ready to flash any rom your heard "desires". Hehe... get it... "desires".
P.S. Gold card information:
What a Gold Card does is letting you install ROMs on your Android device that aren’t intended for your carrier. For example,if you have a T-Mobile USA HTC Desire, you can install an official ROM intended for the O2 UK HTC Desire, or even a generic ROM that isn’t locked to a carrier. It does so by disabling the CID (Carrier ID)check that the device does when installing a ROM.
If you have an unlocked desire, then you won't need a gold card.

If you backup from recovery, that backup will be saved on sdcard in the clockworkmod/backup folder.
To install a zip, go to recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" , then find and select the zip. Remember to backup first.
Usually widgets, apps in general come in .apk format. If you want to install one, just install it with root explorer. No need for recovery install.
Anyways, i'm kinda tired. If you have any more questions, ask jmcclue.

Go here and download superuser 3.0.7 zip and put it on ur sdcard then with ur phone off hold volume down + power. Once in bootloader press volume buttons to navigate down to recovery and press power button to select, then in recovery choose install zip from sdcard and flash superuser.zip, once complete just reboot and u will have root

My phone is S-OFF however I am unable to push recovery. I have SU signed package on the SD card though CWM is not there in my phone. I have tried numerous time with both, Unrevoked and Evolution's method but they just won't give me any result but keep me waiting.
I have even tried to flash recovery via fastboot but it returns with an error says "Failed".
Can some one through light on what am I missing?

[Q] Recover bricked phone with S-ON - the newest PC10IMG.zip needed [RESOLVED]

Hi!
I've got bricked HTC Desire Z without root, S-ON, just stock but doesn't boot - hangs at HTC logo. I am able to get into Bootloader. I guess I need to flash PC10IMG.zip, but the one I have is Froyo one and while flashing it in bootloader it says that it's older than actuall or something like that.
I don't know what software I've got, but I need the newest PC10IMG.zip to flash it and than my phone should work again. So, where can I find it? On http://www.androidruu.com/?developer=Vision I see only executable files, so they are not helpful at all.
SOLUTION
.exe RUU from http://www.androidruu.com/?developer=Vision
Part 2 Grabbing Rom From RUU
1) Start the exe and leave it to load
2) once loaded leave it
3) navigate to C:\Users\**username***\AppData\Local\Temp\
4) look for pne of the two newest folders and open
5) within that folder there will be another folder open that
6) find rom.zip and copy to the sdcard
7) rename PC10IMG.zip
8) Put MicroSD card back into phone and boot to android
