Hi there, both problems crop up more and more over the internets.

Anyone yet?

12 days and no issues apart from ones caused myself

Supposedly use of the stereo jack aggravates the problem. I see this a lot in Europe and very little in the US. So far.

Yeah it would be helpful if you post saying you are having an issue if you would also say what version of the phone you have. US or UK or whatever else is out there.
Seems mostly like there are two hardware versions, but I could be wrong.

i am not buying this phone until I get more info on this problem. many people on the net have this problem.

less than a week of ownership and no issues so far

Honestly I only see the reboot on the non-US Motorola forum: three or four people in the UK. They are claiming it's related to loss of 3G?

i think it has something to do with specific SIM cards (3n or 5n). theres more info on the german forum of android-hilfe.de

Sorry for my n00bishness but what is the difference between an 3n and 5n sim card, also how do I tell which type I have?
Thanks

Broken earpiece here. Phone wasn't even a week old. Had used the headset a few times.
Now I have my second Defy and hope that it doesn't happen again.

Where are you? I'm hoping they'll replace mine as opposed to sending it off to get it repaired.
How long have you had the new one?

Less than a week and no issues as of yet. I have had two random reboots so far but both were when my battery was under ten percent. Only issue I've had this far is battery life but I think its in part to me running launcher pro and not rooting yet, and the fact I use my phone ALOT. Overall I'm happy though, so much so that I will pay full price for a second one for the wife!

I am in Germany. They wanted to send it in for repairs first but i had them exchange it on the spot. The second one is on it's first week now. Didn't play around with the headset but am calling myself every now and then to check if the earpiece still works

Must say it's a little worrying reading about this issue. I guess the advice ought to be to simply avoid using the headphones socket! Out of the question for some perhaps, but I would point out that bluetooth headphones/headsets are actually very affordable now. £20-£30 gets a fairly good pair of headphones, which will render this issue kinda harmless (if usage of the socket is indeed the culprit). Plus, who wants cables trailing out of their mobile phone anyway? Unless you absolutely need to use the onboard FM radio, you may as well just leave the 3.5mm socket alone, especially if there's a risk of breaking the earpiece speaker.
Despite this minor issue, I think the Defy is an awesome android phone, and highly recommended. Perhaps in the coming weeks Motorola will acknowledge this problem and sort it out completely - fixing the jack properly for future production, and maybe offering free bluetooth headphones to those who've bought a Defy with this weak socket/earpiece speaker issue (well it would only be fair, certainly cheaper than furnishing all early customers with new Defys... or would that seem to be a far-fetched dream? - help me out, I've no experience with Motorola's aftersales support! Lets hope they feel obliged to do the right thing for all of us who've decided to go for something a little different to the iphone/bberry/htc crowd)

I love the phone too, but we shouldn't have to work around problems like this. What's the point in having a jack if you can't use it?

Except I believe the radio (FM) will not work unless earphones are physically inserted because they act as antenna.

Yes you did read correctly.
The htc hermes does have a GPS
chip it's circuits, however
the chip on all release platforms have had the chip deliberately disabled in the following manor.
1.drivers removed from the roms
2. crucial pins left unconnected
3. a few support components left out
4. antenna pins and support connections for both an internal and external antenna left nonexistent .
It's very unfortunate as I spent the better part of a month looking between the thread here and on 4winmobile only to find that the best of the best hardware hackers had failed to come up with a resolve due to usually lack of tools required, components difficult at times to obtain, and the almost 98% chance of unrepairably damaging the main pcb or the surrounding components in which you would then be left with the preverbial brick of which there is no safty net or special bootloader to save you. thusly I gave up and finally just did what most get when they buy or get the hermes withco pilot. I bought a good bluetooth gps receiver and loaded software for it to be used by. in this case it was tom tom 6.
I feel for you in this one as it would have been nice if the hermes was like the artimas [ie: o2 orbit, t-mobile mda compact]
and had it built in. But alas the is no technical resolve that can be achieved as of now for this other then to go bluetooth external receiver.
*hehe chalk one up for the noobs referring to the senior vs new members to the board which I find funny as I may not post as much as others but I know more then what the rating suggests heheh*
my question is why would high paid asian techs leave some gps chip that would not be used
that is not business like at all
just like carriers leaving ot the front video camera, and still charing ridiculous prices for the unit !!!!!!!!

I'll fix your HTC phone or provide parts

Hey guys. I have gotten alot from this website so I would like to give back. I own and operate a mobile phone repair shop and would like to extend my services to this forum. Most of you seem pretty techical so even if you just want the part (microphone, ear speaker, Loud speaker, LCD) I will provide it for you at a low cost plus shipping of course. I mostly deal with hardware issues so please don't PM me or post asking about software, I am a total noob when it comes to that!
Thanks again to all the rom builders and contributers who have helped make my phone awsome!
If you can source the vibrate motor for an HTC S710 I would be forever grateful. Where abouts are you located?
EDIT: I see you're in Phoenix.
Most of the parts I carry are for US released HTC phones but often they carry simular parts. If you can post a picture of what it looks like I'll see if I have a match.
I will upload a picture in a little bit, however here are the specifications from the HTC Vox Service Manual for the motor;
JT0406-30CSR1, JNTECH, Cylindrical, 3V, 100mA, 12000+/-3000 rpm, 60/-, 20degC, 11.2*5.1*5.8mm
The cylinder has J7D05 printed on it and has 2 prongs that make contact to the pad on the PCB. I've tried many different other motors but none of them physically fit in the spot. So if you have any motor rated to those specs and is smaller or equal to the dimensions above, I will take it.
Here are two pictures of it. They are quite large, so not inlined. Not my camera, one of those funky digital ones that I have no idea how to adjust the focus on.

Ah yes. Thanks, I shall await your response in great excitement.
Happy Indie Day!
A friend of mine has an O2 XDA Orbit but the usb works for charging but not for the data link.
Is this fixable? and if so, do you perform the fixes !!!!
@pna
I had the same problem with my Dash/Excalibur. I had to turn off the USB charging feature in the settings and then the data worked fine. I just either turn it back on if I need to charge via USB on my PC and don't have a wall charger handy. Tell your friend to try that.
Edit:
Also Turn off Advanced Network Functionality to along with charging over USB.

If the pins in the socket look straight re-flow the solder on the mainboard or get someone to do it. It's fairly easy. New sockets are about $4 on fleabay but as there are multiple lines close together you do need skill to replace.

Right on! I have been wanting to replace the metal bezel that goes around the front of the AT&T 8525 (U.S. HTC Hemes). Mine has gotten quite scratched and scuffed over the last year, and I would love to have it returned to it's original clean, shiny look.
Do you happen to carry this part by any chance? Or know of an affordable place to obtain one?
I get mine from a guy on ebay. I used my last 3 over the holiday weekend so I am out till I order some more on Monday. They are about $28 shipped. Link below....

If you need the full housing email Amit / Raki Computers and ask - they have them as well at not much more $ ( about $26 IIRC) if you ask although the parts they sell are used / stripped from BER phones so some have minor marks and it's pot luck.

[Bounty] Fm Radio and Transmitter

As you may know the Galaxy Nexus sports a Broadcom BCM4330 which is capable of Bluetooth, Wifi, and FM tuning and transmitting. I hereby propose a bounty for a hardware/software modder to make these functionalities work. As of now the need for an internal antenna is a major hurdle for some people. I personally don't mind opening up my device and installing one as long as there are clear instructions on how to do so.
I am willing to donate $400 USD to a dev that can get either transmitting or receiving working
I think it is a neat idea.Good luck..I'm not the developer.
Does FM work with headphones?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Your wanting to do this for transmitting purposes and not so you can listen to fm radio right? Because you can use TuneIn Radio for FM.
I also would like to see this because of several reasons. First, streaming apps need internet (obviously) and I don't have data. I run on prepaid and only use wifi at home and school to save money (I'm a student). Second, FM radio was the one thing that one of my friends required for a new phone. Obviously I want him to get the great Galaxy Nexus.
If anyone would be able to get this working with either an internal antenna, or (more ideally) using the headphone wires as an antenna, that would be great.
Hi,
Sorry if I did not clearly understand all,but maybe take a look at this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059296&highlight=fmradio
But it seems it's not possible:
These devices will likely never be able to support FM with Spirit or any FM app:

That would definitely be awesome. I don't have an Aux port or a tape player in my car so I always wanted to be able to just tune my radio to a channel and hear music from it without plugging my phone into anything.
clarified my post xD
Very interesting, hopefully someone gets this working.

I'm in the exact same boat...erm, crappy car. Badass phone, POS car.
The stock head unit is integrated with dashboard so its not easy to swap a new one.
Also willing to open up my Gnex and solder to test an antenna, just need an EE to tell me which leads....

I really hope this going to happen. I hate to use radio apps to listen to music due to my 2GB Highspeed Cap. FM receiver/transmitter feature is needed.
I'll throw in $40 to make it happen. I just want as many features as possible
I brought a wireless FM Transmitter for £10...I don't get it :/ All seems hassle for a few quid and a bit of shopping...
Lol
Ill sell you my droid x2 that has fm radio working in it for $400
From my nexus tappin the talk
<edit post successful>
I've bought an FM-sender that plugs into the cigarette-lighter-output in the car, which connects to the phone via 3.5mm jack. The sender also has output for USB, which lets me charge the phone at the same time. I payed 150 NOK for that, which is about $30. Should be something like that in your american Wallmarts as well!
The phone is capale of transmission on the fm band by any developer so inclined to create it. This is the very essence of nexus class development. If your solution to the bounty on this thread is to suggest buying external hardware , you are really missing the point .

But the whole point of the thread is to unlock the full capability of the hardware we own.
Not to buy another product to do a job that in theory our phone can already do.
I have a feeling its a big job and next to near impossible to accomplish but I'm willing to throw some money into the pot if a dev gets this done.
Just to prove it can be done at least.
This kind of thing is why I love android and nexus, doing something that isn't supposed to be done.

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing happen that, by rights, shouldn't. That's the joy of Android. All I'm questioning and wondering, and not in a bad way just a quizical way, I'm assuming the op is throwing in $400 to encourage the development of the FM transmitter. If so, why a relatively large amount for a device that can be brought for a fraction of the price? Is there really a $390 benefit to have it built in?

[SEAT] Leon: Mark 3

Hi guys,
Hope I am not wrong in posting this thread, if I am then just remove it.
I have a SEAT Leon mark 3 and ever since I bought it the infotainment system has not once been updated in regards to software. It does have a software update section but it doesn't say anywhere to check for updates. I have tried google and cant find anything, any help please?
Thank you.
my gf "just" got a leon (2014 facelift) too, nice drive by the way.
why do you want to update anthing? i think updates will only be distributed if there is a really big error in the device/software ... and there will (in my experience) NEVER be new features for something they already sold ... buy a new car in 3 years is the deal here
by the way the speed recognition is a major pain as its extremely slow ... everything else is OK from what i can tell.

anyway yeah ive seen some VWs with friends & family, big/small nav-devices. never a really up-to-date functionality, CPU almost always too slow if you are used to a top smartphone/tablet ... but the units work for some good 10 years.
the future belongs to mirrorlink or whatsoever its called, smartphones are just faster and are being replaced at least every 2 years by the user.
cheers!
Hi guys, just a question about BT connection, probably It's the same on all BT system, I don't know, but why It's not possible to connect two devices (for example 2 smartphone) at the same time?
I have to switch and connect only one of them every time, It's a BT protocol or depends from SEAT software?
Thank you!

it is only possible to connect one (1) device at the same time.
i do not know if it is a BT protocol thing or just a restriction in the SEAT software, but it is the same with pretty much every headunit i know... (VW/AUDI/SKODA/SEAT, Mercedes, BMW, Alpine, Clarion, Pioneer...)
i guess it is like that because modern BT connections also get the phonebook and 2 simultaneuos connections would mix that up ...
in my opinion this makes perfect sense unless you really need 2 phone personally.
start thinking about a dual-sim-phone if you really need this.

Humm.. maybe!
The updates for the car radio is bringed by seat, but at the moment, seat no have updates.
Also, Seat is oferring a new model of radio card with mirror link
As a person who works in the automotive industry, I can only tell you that most, if not all updates are only possible in a service. On another note, updates rarely, if ever, bring new features.
So the only thing you could do is go to your local official VW service (or one where you know someone) and ask for an update. Be prepared to pay some good $$$ for getting a few (unnoticed) bugs squashed.
Here you can find the software updates for your 5F w w w.clubseatleon.n e t/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=118140, it's a spanish froum, use translator
well if anyone need i found a update for the mib 1 and the mib2 screens
it can update to version 480 for the mib 1 and 0330 for the mib 2
you can find the interstions and the files in the link below
have fun and thanks would be welcome

Random Question.
I updated my 5F0 MIB1 Unit to 480 in early January but since then my TMC Traffic hasn't worked - That's the "Traffic Button" it just contantly says "No Reports Found" but a guy 10 miles away receives loads.
Any quick fixes for this?
Hello, can someone post that 480 SW file for download, all the old loinks are dead...

Garbled metallic sound when filming video

I bought three G5 with 3GB or RAM for myself, wife and mother. The plus model was not available at the time here in Sweden.
All three of the phones have a very strange and in your face garbled metallic sound when filming video. This sound distortion makes video in places where there is natural background noise unbearable. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Am I the only one with this issue? Lost a lot of video of my newly born baby because of this sound issue =(
Thanks
same thing here, G5 3GB RAM and mic sounds like rubbish, seems like the same issue the Nexus 5 had, where the filter were too aggressive and instead ruined the sound. the solution was to completely disable the filter with some kind of patch.

This is from the other day on my own phone. My wife has a zillion videos that sound the exact same way on her phone. This weird noise only shows up if there is background noise.
All three phones have this issues. All three phones are bought here in Sweden:
Moto G5
3GB RAM
16 GB ROM
64 GB SD card
Version: PVT1
SKU: XT1676
Build number: NPP25.137-15
Software Channel: reteu
Baseband Ver: M8937_8000.122.02.40R
Any clue on what this is and how to deal with it? Should I just return all three phones?

I also bought mine in Sweden and I have the same problem...I already contacted Sweden Technical support. Please do the same so they are aware of the incident. If you check lenovo's forum there's more people with the same problem.
You can contact them in motorola rest of europe (roe) section. I'm not allowed to post links :/
Cheers!

I'll call them tomorrow! Ericsson bought 50 G5 XT1676. All of the phones have that trash background noise when I asked around. I was given a phone but I bought two to give to my family.

They offered me to replace the unit on the mails, but it's obviously a common issue, so there's no point. Maybe they are more understandable on the phone. Also remember to ask if they know when is the spring finally arriving to Sweden
Tack!

lol would be funny as hell if I could get all 50 owners of the phone at work to replace them
Sweden only has two seasons. 1) Dark season 2) Rain season

This is what Lenovo had to say. I returned my phones. Some of the others might do the same. Unfortunately for Lenovo Ericsson was going to buy a bunch of Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptops. They are freaking expensive. That is not going to happen now since Ericsson is afraid that Lenovo will not back up its products with fw updates.

Just finding this thread. I bought a G5 in Denmark a few weeks ago. I've noticed the same issue. I think it's either a over aggressive noise reduction scheme they've incorporated, or a result of low quality mp4 audio bitrate for recording. Probably a combination of these. Have you found a thread on Lenovo - Motorola that I can find more info about this on? Cheers,
Damn, I'm starting to evaluate the possibility of giving it back and get another one (obviously not Lenovo). Screw them, couldnt they just release a update for it? I record a lot of videos usually and this is really annoying...
Thanks for the update though
Hey, looked into it some more. I used the Cinema FV-5 app and found that by disabling the "Automatic Gain Control" of the microphone the sounds are recorded more clearly.
So, the metallic garbled sounds are most likely largely due to an overly aggressive AGC setting on the native camera app combined with whatever settings they have on audio conversion.
Wouldn't it be nice if Moto made an update to the camera app so that you could disable the automatic gain control if you wanted to....
I talked to Motorola Support and they told me they're already working on it, but they can't give me any date. At least I know it will be fixed at some point.
I am on day 1 of my G5 testing, and yes, I also experience this horrendous "Finding Nemo" underwater sound, caused by overly aggressive audio filtering and/or AGC. FIX IT LENOVO!

Don't abandon a potential ThinkPad purchase decision based on crappy consumer mobile phone product lines. The business-oriented ThinkPad laptops are superb - I have three ThinkPads here - R61, T430 and an R500, and as a service engineer who ONLY deals with quality equipment, let me tell you, you won't find better laptop hardware from ANY company. The "ThinkPad" range is a continuation from IBM's original line of ThinkPads, and they are the only laptops fully tested, approved, and signed off for use on NASA and ISS missions - that's how robust and dependable they are - the stuff of legends. The consumer <blah>Pad products are not worth a donkey turd, but the "ThinkPad" lines are hot stuff my friend, ANYONE worth their salt will back me up on this view, it's a given - they are built like tanks with carbon fibre composite, glass fibre reinforced plastic, and magnesium alloy construction - not the usual creaky, paper-thin plastic crap palmed off on the vanity market, aka consumers.

No doubt the Thinkpad X1 Carbon is a really nice laptop. Its just the buyers for Ericsson want nothing to do with Lenovo now. Instead that department bought 25 'Dell XPS 15 9560' =(
Looks like the G5 is now has some ROMS! Yayyyy!

Somebody on IRC pointed out a work around for the video sound issues.
