Ok so i have tried a few IM services, and i want to know what you folks think is the best one you have used.
I have tried Verichat back in the day but cannot seem to find it anymore
I just had Palringo and HATE it because i am getting spam IMs
I had agile messenger too and it seems to be the best out there.
Hopefully someone has a better suggestion. PLease make sure is does not use your SMS cause i would just use windows messenger but i do not have an unlimited text plan.
Thanks
I guess no one has a messenger service they like

Do you mean unlimited data plan? Messenger does not use SMS, and I use that and it's flawless.
Nimbuzz. So far, the only one that can tap into Facebook chat, along with bunch of other chat-services, such as Messenger, ICQ, AIM etc.
My favourite IM is "BeejiveIM" the icq function is better then all the other icq IM clients.
Try 'BeejiveIM', the graphics are really amazing but it is for QVGA (still work on WVGA although)
I used to use Nimbuzz and quite liked it, but I've moved to Fring which gives you access to Twitter (which is excellent) and apparently Facebook chat (though I haven't tested this). Free of course.
My favorite you already said you don't like....Palringo
I never get spam ads from it...
BeeJive I had on my TyTn II but cannot get it to work on my HD, Ill try Fring again but i think there was something about it I didnt like, and have not tried Nimbuzz, thanks.
Really pleased with my deal, T-Mobile UK, £15 a month, 600 minutes, unlimited internet, unlimited texts, and free phone for 18months contract.
Thought I would share that with you first as I'm REALLY impressed with that deal! (been with them over 5 years now mind!)
I had a quick question, as I've been using an iPhone and switching over. . . The friend stream and things like that, can they be changed to say a dedicated twitter application and dedicated facebook application. I dont generally use them in conjunction with each other and was just curious.
Also, the app space was a bit of a concern for me. Is the 119mb that is available really enough? I'm used to installing a lot of apps with the iPhone and just wondering what others experiences where with it...
Thanks guys!
To answer one of your question below: YES!
You dont have to install that FriendStream widget (I wont!).
You can find dedicated Facebook app, for example from Facebook.com itself:
http://www.facebook.com/mobile/?ref=pf
I prefer to access via web browser
There are coupld of twitter clients, you might search it here:
http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=twitter&market=android
People says this is one of the best:
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/nebbie.twitter.appone/
And it is only $2

Ah so each individual screen is a widget. That makes sense now.
Its good to know that. I like the individual applications on the iphone and got used to that. I'm just hoping the native applications will be as good as the iphone's (i used twitteriffic and the native facebook app).
They are the main things I use it for (Guess its a bit sad! lol).
Cant wait to get my hands on it on tuesday and have a play with it!
if you use just facebook, you can install the FriendsStrem and use facebook only with it you dont have to sign in/have twitter, or other things .. that is if like the widget itself.
if you like to use normal applications (not widgets) than there are separate apps for them (and i believe Desire comes ships with them, Facebook app and peep "for twitter")
I was thinking of trying that but the friendstream just for twitter as I dont know how much information that it updates (new pictures etc).
With the applications do they have to be downloaded using the phone itself, or can they be downloaded and installed from the memory card? Not too the memory card, but if i downloaded them on my computer somehow...
I'm still trying to read up about the android OS and how it works.
Glad i've learned how to sync my gmail contacts accross for when i get it! That will save a lot of time entering numbers.
Got my phone this morning and the friend stream is AMAZING. Means that you can view all updates and when you lick on one it takes you to the native application.
I Think I love this phone! haha.
Your Desire should have official facebook app and Peep (Twitter Client) pre loaded... Mine did...
Must say though I do like the friends stream!
Yeah it came with them! After reading some reviews on the applications i honestly didnt think hat they would be as good as the iphone, and after switching from a 3GS I can say that this is a LOT faster doing things, from web browsing to loading applications and photos.
Everything just scrolls so smoothly. I'm sure this is a dream! haha
FYI.. there are a lot of Facebook and Twitter apps on the market and believe the following are the best off...
Facebook
Official App
Bloo
Babbler
Twitter
Twidroid
Seesmic
I believe you should be able to see all these on the market...
yeah, is it ok that im in england and any prices are displayed in $ ?
Seems a bit odd!

Fine, when you get to the pay screen it will give you a approx converted price as well, remember that your bank may charge a £1 for overseas transaction on a Credit or Debit card...
Also... you have 24 hours to uninstall and refund if your not happy with the app...
Thats actually a great idea of not being happy with the app. Been a fair few applications bought on the iphone that i hated after using!
In the past, i've had the Touch Cruise, T-Diamond and the T-Diamond 2.
I've always hated Winmob since it always seemed that only amatures were making apps for it and it was full of bugs.
With the desire in the post I have questions for people that have it already.
Do we think that the Android OS is going to end up killing WinMob? Is it much better? There's lots of talk saying maybe iphone app creators, now they've made some money, are moving to the Android OS to get some of the market and that with the Nexus and Desire making noise, the app market will grow very quickly.
Also
I've never had an iphone/pod and refuse to get one, however their itunes app store seems like a good idea, does android have one? everyone's talking about the 'market place' thing or whatever, is that an app on the phone that you can shop for new ones on or something (i've never even touched on Android before and been in Afghan for the last 6 months so i've been a bit out of the loop.
Well I have been developing apps for Symbian and Windows Mobile, but I can tell you that Android is a lot more friendly to code in. So I expect that the amount of apps (quality ones ofc) in the market will just grow rapidly.
Yes the "Market" is Androids version of the iPhone app store.
yea..

Is there any way of getting Windows live on it? I really liked having my mail and msn so easily accessed on my TD2.
Since i've got hotmail i've been told i can't get it so it's pushed to my mail right?
You can link your hotmail to the phone so it automatically retrieves them and i'm not sure about Live Messenger but there are a few apps for it just not sure there is an official one.

from what i've heard you can sync the desire with hotmail, but i dont think the official win live will work on it, however palringo substitues msn very well
You can use Windows Live Messenger through apps like Meebo, eBuddy and Fring.

hense why Microsoft inbox doesn't work with hotmail right?
I think it works, I've read other people saying it worked even though they're on a free account.
I would recommend though you switch to googlemail, it's 10x better than hotmail.
Also congrats on coming back from Afghan.
I dont personally sync my hotmail (I use it as my junkmail account when I have to sign up to things) but my girlfriend syncs with it on her android based htc magic

why is googlemail so much better ?
at the end of the day, everyone uses msn messenger and windows live mail works great on PC.
not back from afghan yet, got 7 days left. Though time in Bastion is pretty relaxed now for us and we're just counting down the days

You just get less spam, everything is managed better, you get more space get to send larger attachments etc.
You can use MSN with a googlemail address you just register it at passport.net

for me as a normal user/ graphic designer windows phone 7 is a total failure, it looks like a candy for twit-facebook addicts having trouble with their sight needing big buttons text etc.
definitely prefer droid and winmo6.5
Android will stay, WM7 will have to prove itself, and it will be difficult cuz it will be too locked (just like iCrap) it will be hard for WM7 to gain market shares at the beginning considering that the platform will be brand new (very different than other WM) and with the bad reputation the WM brand generated through out the past years.
I can easily say android is a very safe choice right now
I'm very unhappy with my new Desire. It is of course, also, the problem regarding "the change" from WM to Android, but... I cannot choose "My location" and now I just discovered that YOU CAN'T SYNC NOTES AND TASK with Outlook. This is unbelievable! If the problem with My location and weather shown in the HOME Screen it's not so serious (you can check the weather on line) the problem with the sync it's awful, and there is no program on the "market" to solve it.
I can't believe that I just bought a 500 euro phone and it is so useless. Is there any chance to replace the famous "Android" with a real OS like WM 6.5 (from HD2) for example???
Please I'm desperate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
buy a HD2 instead. (!!!11!1!!!)
Why did you buy an Android phone if you want to install WM 6.5 on it?
Why do people still use Outlook is beyond my belief
Why do people still sync to a computer (that can only be in one place at a time) is again beyond my belief.
I have my Desire for 2 weeks now and I never even installed the sync app, don't even know what it looks like.
But to answer your question: NO you can't replace Android to the fake ... i mean real OS Windows Mobile.
I came from Windows Mobile and I couldn't be happier i got rid of it. Stop thinking offline, and start thinking cloud sync... it'll eventually be the default weather we like it or not.
You can argue (From a technical pov) that WM6.5 is a real OS and that Android isn't. In fact even Symbian would be more of a "Real" OS than Android. The difference is that those two OSes can run native code and Android just runs everything via Java. This doesn't mean much to most users but to developers it means a lot.
someone please shut this thread before the OP gets flamed to death......
If native code means a deficiency of decent apps, where even the few good ones are jerky, clunky and Windows CE...ey then I'm all for Java - go Java.
I left the HD2 because Windows Mobile is unreliable (believe it or not) because it was never meant to handle such complex skins as Sense UI and therefore leaked memory like a teabag full of pulped brain; and also because there was a deficiency of decent apps (despite its supposed ability to handle 'native code'). If it's so great then why are most of the .cabs people install fixes and patches rather than ACTUAL apps? And why are there no decent alternative Facebook apps etc? Is Windows Mobile 'TOO GOOD' for this sort of software development? For an OS a fifth of the age of Windows Mobile, Android has ten times as many IM apps (for example). Why is this so?
Android allows for one to code/install apps for even CORE applications like SMS and Email: show me a decent email replacement for Windows Mobile? One that ACTUALLY REPLACES the native one....you can't? Android can.
And as capricious as it might seem the rubbish email client in Windows Mobile was one of the reasons I started to loath the OS. What is the point of the 'click to scroll right' and 'pictures blocked for security reasons' BS??? Is it REALLY necessary? And why is it so....ugly?
Anyway I thought I'd get my word in before this thread gets closed. If you can't move with the times then go and buy a TyTn 2 or something. Outlook syncing will soon be as dead as Windows Mobile so for Google to include it would be a backwards step, being as more necessary features are still to be implemented.
It's all about the cloud.
P.S. research before jumping in and buying a phone as you seem to have very specific requirements. Outlook task and notes syncing is a VERY SPECIFIC requirement which in the overall scheme of a burgeoning OS would be deemed unnecessary by Google. I wouldn't buy a Renault Megane if I needed a tractor.
I think it's just a case of people not liking change at all. So the different and sometimes better things that Android provides seem not so good.
Why do people still use Outlook is beyond my belief

For work purposes most likely? Information that has to be stored securely in outlook on a system which they DO NOT want in the cloud? But would like to sync via hard wire or secure connection to the device?
Outlook syncing will be alive as long as Microsoft push it and businesses continue to use it and would rather not have information in the cloud, even Windows Phone 7 offers outlook syncing, it isn't going anywhere.
I havn't tried but doesn't htc sync allow to sync with Outlook?? I though that was what it said on the box....
Anyhow, i've just come from an HTC Touch HD where i have tried all the versions of windows and senses and other interfaces and i have to say i am loving my new desire!!!!
I am no developer but Android is so much better adapted to a smartphone, it's fast, fluid and allows all sorts of customization and when i had my HD, as far as i can remember, there were like 20 apps on the marketplace, i thin android market is at 30.000???? No question, no comparison!!!
An app on the Market - Touchdown allows tasks syncing with outlook. Not sure about Notes.
But to be honest, as has been said, why spend €500 on a phone and not have done any research into wether it will do what you want it to.
Not only that, but if its a problem, then in most instances you wil be able to return it within 7 or 14 days for a refund (less any charges) so you should have done that.
Whats the moral of this tale :- Always do your research!

If you had such explicit requirements, why didn't you do the research before hand?
Regarding issue with syncing tasks, use the calendar to create your tasks in outlook, use an app on your computer called google calendar sync to upload it to a gmail account, then you'll have them on your phone... simple.
Gustibus non disputandum est!
That means (I hope I write it down correct): the tastes are not questionable!!
I did my research before buying this toy, and I can return it in 30 days (10 to go), and the HD2 was the first option but the sizes ... to big for me.
At the office I use Outlook on my laptop to do notes, task, appointments (on my laptop)... and so on, and when I'm on the field maybe I need some of them, so.... I WILL LIKE TO SYNC MY NOTES FROM LAPTOP WITH MY PHONE. What is so hard to understand? That not everybody use the phone for games and billions of apps which are doing the same thing. In 3 hours of searching I found not more than 5 interesting application (and the WM has 3 of them in the original OS). That's all!
Why I use Outlook ? Because I have a job and an server e-mail and like any more than 70% of this world computers I use MIcrosoft Software. I received an advice from one forum: use Gmail notes! You gotta be kidding ! This 500 euro phone should have some real business apps. I don't use phone for music, pictures and games, instead I need a mail client which allow me to select different mails and mark them like read, or unread. I receive hundreds of mail daily and I need to organize them. What it's so hard to understand?
Give me a break with this Android OS. I hoped that will be different than Iphone but it's the same sheet. I prefer to have notes instead Facebook...social communication ! And tasks instead youtube!
When I bought this phone I never thought that the sync software will not sync notes and tasks. The 5 years old Nokia or Sony that I used then had it. MY problem is that the solution is so simple but you prefer to tell me that I have 3 billions of apps, why I need notes when I can play poker or chess?in 5000 languages.
In my opinion Android is a great software but ... for this price you should think that are some people which are trying to use it for the daily job and not for messenger to pick-up minor teenage girls.
One of you wrote: why do you use Outlook, get on-line... Some information will never go on-line... company policy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And yes Android it's more simple to use than WM, but because it's simple he does simple things, but I NEED MORE! so I guess I need WM, complicated but it has what I need; it's just like cars: some people like muscle cars (pure power and simple technology), but others prefer German or Japanese cars which are maybe a little bit complicated but they offer something different.
thanks anyway!

I'm actually working for a global telecom company as IT, so your statement above makes me laugh.
Do you guys don't separate your work life from your personal life? Are you doing work all the time.
My phone is exactly that, MY phone, not the company's phone, not the work phone. I'm not paying MY money to have a phone for work. My company gave me a phone and that's the work phone, that's the phone i'm called when someone from WORK wants to reach me, that phone is for work mail, that phone is for the stuff you said you needed. That phone that has the features my work requires from me.
This phone is my personal phone. I don't want to be contacted on this phone, I don't want to do work on this phone, it's MY phone and yeah, I do use Gmail as a personal email, I do use Google Calendar as my personal agenda, I do use Google Contacts and many many other cloud applications Google offers and I couldn't be happier. I want Facebook on MY phone, I want YouTube on MY phone.
Oh and that outlook you so much want is just a fronted to a MTA server, be it POP3, IMAP or Exchange. If you're not working for a secret spy agency most likely those MTA's are public and accessible from the internet. Why not connect to those and insist to connect to Outlook? If your company uses Exchange you can set up this phone to use it also, and you can sync everything outlook has ... through the cloud (that is if you work in a normal company that actually lets users check their mail when not at the office), so you don't need to be connected to anything, just need internet on the phone.
I configured the Exchange ActiveSync from my work account the phone and works like a charm, if i put an appointment on my phone it shows up on Outlook after a few minutes "just like that", if i put an appointment on Outlook it shows up on my phone "just like that". To tell you the truth since I got this phone, i never once hooked it to a computer, only transfered via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sometimes.

No man, I don't have a rant here, just trying to explain myself. It's not fair what happens to me here, because I asked a question and everybody jumped on me instead helping me. Exchange Server it's a great solution but unfortunately my company will not use a server for this. And for me there is no better alternative than Outlook, WE ARE DIFFERENT, accept it. I installed 10 notes apps, but none have sync with outlook. I know that I can use notes directly on phone but it's much easier on the laptop.
I repeat: I can, and probably I will return the phone. I love how it looks, dimensions, the hardware... and I was thinking that maybe because it's a software problem it can be solved. Why are so ... LOCKED ?
It's been 1 week now since I started my new love affair with WP7. I must say, I am very impressed and I do not miss OS 6 on my dethroned BB at all. I got the Mozart for the spectacular camera and because that flip stand on the back of the HD7 is just a recipe for headaches when it starts popping off.
Anyway the only thing I am longing for is a nice IM client that can at least handle Yahoo Messenger. I've been reading about all the hype on "Cross Talk" having the power to give WP7, Oldphone and Android the ability to have Blackberry Messenger and Facebook Chat...It has been 5 months since it was first spotted and mid last month I read that Cross talk is built and good to go pending for the release of the first WP7 device. Now that 5 of them are out, where is it? Another myth maybe?
I'm sure the first developer who gets a decent IM platform up in the marketplace will have a pleasant Christmas!
It's been a week without BBM or any IM on my phone, there is only one so called "Messenger" in the Marketplace which is a Live Messenger Knock off but it's useless....it doesn't even alert you or show an icon when someone sends you a message unless you have the app open therefore it only works if YOU are the one initiating the chat thread or if you want to keep opening the app every 5 minutes to check.
Other than my aspirations for a working IM client, WP7 is just an absolute killer! Love the UI and how graphics run through the screen. It is by far the easiest...OS to learn from scratch!
Hopefully eBuddy will add their own messenger to WP7 as they seem to be one of the most popular ones on Android.
Mate, anything is better than nothing at this stage hahaha.
I know it's too early to expect that much from WP7 but then again in previous years almost every new OS that came out had at least a couple of IM options right away.
Let's see...
WP7 doesn't have support for sockets in 3rd party apps right now which is pretty crucial for IM clients.
yes, very disappointed with WP7 that they didn't come with their own WLM and needed to use very buggy plus unstable Messenger by miyowa
hope Whatsapp, Beejive can come out with their IM on WP7 asap.

They do have their own client... and it should be in the market place by now...

I hope there's actually a first party UIX-based client coming. The MSN protocol supports multiple points of presence, so you could keep your phone and your home computer online simultaneously.
personally im waitin on cross talk and palringo hopefully palringo brings the option to automatically run as soon as the device powers on like it does on windows mobile 6.5
Anything that doesn't require yet another account creation would be good, but I much prefer IM clients from the Vendor (i.e. Yahoo, AIM, WLM client from Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft).

technically this will never be the case with windows phone 7 as the start screen is the only thing that will show. However, in saying that, the makers of palringo can come up with a live tile which could automatically act like that, and then once you click the tile, it launches the application.
Messenger by Miyowa?
I am using this and it looks nice so far. MSN only (ofc)
i thought palringo was coming to wp7 they were one of the developers that had intentions on developing for wp7
Looks like IM+ is coming.
