[Q] wanting an easy root - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had the DINC since a few weeks from the launch date. But, I don't really know all of the ins and outs of everything. I love the phone but want to root it. I tried "unrevoked" but I don't think I did it right. Cause it didn't work. So if anyone can help me that would be great.

How do you know it didn't work?

Install BusyBox and see if that works. It (quickly) checks to see if you have root.
Scott

I don't think it worked cause once it installed it never went past installing. I tried restarting but it just did the same thing, also it never allowed me to change any settings.

Did you follow this guide? There is zero chance of it not working if you follow every step exactly.

which version of the Unrevoked3 tool do you have? v3.21 and lower wont work if you have the Nov OTA Verizon pushed out.
v3.2.2 was released which is suppsed to support the Nov OTA update.

unrEVOked has now updated their process so it works with the OTA. So if you updated last month, delete your old unrEVOked and download the new one and try again.

[Q] Official Verizon HTC incredible Froyo Update (Coming tomorrow)

Engadget states that Verizon is going to push the official 2.2 Froyo update tomorrow for all HTC incredible users.
IF this is true I have a few questions. I'm currently rooted and running Sky Raider 3.0 RC2. I did a nand backup of my old original 2.1 Stock sense rom. If i revert back to that, can I just check for updates and apply the new stock 2.2 Froyo rom that is pushed from verizon?
Thanks,
ej_424
It is true. Unlike previous rumors, VZW employees were told today (this afternoon) and it shows on their bulletin screens now.
That and sometime between 1pm and 2:30pm they updated the support page.
So who's gonna jump in and who's gonna wait?
Please answer my question on how to go about updating. I'll jump in but want to knwo what process i have to take. Is there a chance that I wont be able to re-root if i go with the OTA update?
why go through the trouble of unrooting and going back to stock just to receive an update "officially" thats already been rooted and simplified here in 2 threads?

Honestly.. It's pre-rooted, and is almost positively the exact same as the official OTA.. why bother?

Honestly there is so much information out there. Do what I did when I first got my Incredible. Do a search, and read, read, read. Mind you when you're done your head is going to be spinning. But that is the best way to get all the information you need.
To answer your question.
it was said along time ago that accepting the 2.2 OTA may cause you to not be able to re-root.
now, unrevoked forever takes S-OFF and with this you can accept the 2.2 OTA and still keep root, it was permanent, but with the new release of S-ON there is absolutely no reason not to use S-OFF, then un-root, if you want the "official" 2.2.
I thought that SkyRaider 2.5.2 and 3.0 were built off of the previous leak of FroYo 2.2...am I wrong? I love SkyRaider Vanilla, so I don't get giving that up for an "official" OTA? Maybe it is for some, but I don't see what else you'd really get that you don't have yet that was built into the 2.2 ROM's...
Mods will probably move this to Q and A,
But, you have to provide more info as what radio you are on, hboot.., etc. There are several threads started providing info as to how to prepare yourself...
I mean, the leak OTA has been ripped apart and placed all of this forum. The only thing you can get from verizon will be the satisfaction of a cool Blockbuster app and more vzw crapware, but hey if its what you want

Skyraider pre2.0 was based off an evo port, yes. 2.0 and onward is based off the leak, hence the necessity of the radio upgrade.
Gotcha. That's what I thought, as when I installed SkyRaider 2.2, I remember getting an email saying "thanks for registering your Nexus One" or something like that... Thank you for confirming, much appreciated!
Your recovery image must be stock as well. There are several threads that provide the needed file to return the DInc back to 100% stock/pre-root (just make sure S-OFF is applied first).
Mandatory OTA?
I read the pdf files from Verizon's website on the expected 2.2 OTA, and it says it is MANDATORY. That the only options it gives you are install and DELAY install. That it will keep bugging you every 30 minutes til you do !
I have used Unrevoked3, and Unrevoked Forever and love the phone as it is now (particularly the wifi tether). I want to avoid the OTA but do I HAVE to accept it? If I do, I hope I can reload the version I got with Unrevoked3.
(I assume that Verizon will, in their new version make you PAY to wifi tether)
Any info on this?
Thanks

I'll be pissed if thats the case. gotta do everything all over again. But if we're already @ 2.2 shouldn't it recognize that and not force the OTA to even appear on our phones?
I'm still pretty new to this so sorry if I sound like a complete outsider lol
For those of us who've rooted, forever'd, upgraded radio, and installed some leaked version of Froyo already -- if/when we get prompted to update the phone should we accept or deny it?
With the OTA update will be a radio update as well. And if they attempt to install over the same version won't that be the same as manually attempting to update it twice which equals brick?
Or will the update detect an upgraded radio already and skip that step?

IIRC, you will only be prompted if you have sock recovery installed. As for the OTA, it includes updates to the radio and HBOOT. The update doesn't check to see if you already have an upgraded radio because, in theory, no consumer should have it yet.

If this is the case, there will be a whole lot of bricks out there, right? I thought I read that if you flash a radio twice you're bricked. Maybe not with S_Off.

Not a 100% sure but I think its only if you flash a radio.diff twice you get brick.
Never the less just don't have the updated radio with old builds and stock recovery and all should be fine.

That applied because the prior unrEVOked hack was simply a diff ... it patched. So if you apply the patch to the patch, THEN you brick. Flashing a wholesale radio (while higher on the danger scale) is not the same.

[Q] My Tmobile G2 new update can perm root?

Just received my G2 from Tmobile yesterday, turned on the phone and there was a notifaction saying there is a new version that has Wifi calling and many more fixes. My question is that will I be albe to perm root my G2 now after I updated? Thank you
Yes you will be able to perm root w/o a problem. Go to the G2 android development sections and all your answers are already there
should i get the update from tmobile after getting root
i rooted first since it was easy and now i get a notification saying i got an update is it ok to update thanks in advance
You can root and go straight to a custom rom that takes those fixes and much much more. I recommend CM or Enom's for functionality or virtuous for aesthetics.

I received a new G2 last week, applied the OTA update for wifi calling, and then successfully perma-rooted using the wiki. Took about an hour to go from stock to CM 6.1.1 and overclocked to 1.51Ghz.

But assuming that's the original T-Mo OTA (and I've seen nothing to suggest there's a new one) then it's safe to install the OTA and simply re-root.
You are correct, of course, that folks should stay clear of future OTAs if they are rooted though, till they've been checked by the devs - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875099

Yeah, I think it just threw some people off with the idea of an ota on a new device. It's still the same ole 1st ota for the G2 unfortunately. Nothing to rip out or borrow...
weird that it didn't come with the ota already on the device but since android, ota's haven't been flashed on the device. nevermind, I thinking of the old wm devices... I'm a bit tired.

[Q] OTA update 3.26.605.1

I recently started getting system update notices for 3.26.605.1 on my D-Inc.
I'm running the "standard" clockworkmod recovery that flashed when I rooted the phone. As I understand it, I can not install the update because I'm rooted so is there a way that I can stop the notices (without unrooting and going stock)?
I've also read chatter on other forums about a fix or "root version" on the way from unrevoked, but I haven't been able to find anything official.
Can anyone confirm an update from unrevoked?
Thanks.
Hey Dude,
I figured I would get to you before the wolves do lol you'll probably get a better response to your questions in the "General" section. To answer you directly there is already rooted versions of this OTA such as (shameless plug) both my Roms Redemptive rEVOlution (Evo hybrid) and Redemption Rom.
OK. Thanks.

I've been hitting Cancel on that update message for the last 2 weeks. Today I read about it a bit, and finally just gave in and ran the update. I don't know if it actually updated, but the message is gone, it says my system is up to date, and I still have S-OFF/root. FWIW.

I saw that, thanks. I wanted the update, I just couldn't find any solid answers on whether it disabled root or not. It sounded like it disabled root but left S-OFF alone, so I did ran the update, thinking I could root it again later. But now I still have root, so I don't know if the update was actually applied or not.
I'm not worried either way, it was just an experience relevant to the OP's question.

Go into Settings/About Phone and see what firmware version you have, if it's 26 your updated, if it's still 21, it didn't update.
If you don't know if it's updated, it's prolly not. You would've known as it would've rebooted and then had run the update. If you don't recall any of that, your not updated.
Like was posted previously, you'd be better off finding which ROM has the update and then just flash that, be sure to do a backup 1st and foremost in case you screw up, you can always flash back to what you had and start over.
The only way that update will take is if you have stock with just root and no changes, I did this initially though and you will loose root, which is why I recommend you backup before trying, this way you don't have to root over again.
Edit build.prop. Here is the configuration you'll need to change to stop the OTA updates. This will also help save your battery if it frequently tries to download on 3G.

If you want to stay put on the version you have now, not accept the update, not be bothered by it again, then following bsdbytes's info for editing the build.prop is what you need to do.
If you want to accept and the NOV OTA update and still have clockworkmod recovery and root after... see -> http://solo.dc3.com/dinc/ (If you have an SLCD incredible, be carefull of which CWM Recovery version you use).

The current Unrevoked3 (ver 3.21) does not work to root the Nov OTA, nor install a custom recovery. There were tweets about an update coming, but delays due to thanksgiving, finals, etc. I haven't seen an ETA posted yet.

[Q] Software update installed itself. Is the March root impossible for me?

Software update installed itself. Is the March root impossible for me?
My Note 4 pestered me constantly to update the software, and I kept hitting the home button. Eventually I got tired of it and hit "Update Later" thinking it would stop nagging me every 15 minutes if I hit that button.
Well nope. Instead the phone shut off in the middle of downloading my apps and starting installing the software update.
This pissed me off so much.
Are my chances for root lower in March? Is it possible to downgrade the software?
Thanks!
What version did it install? And who said there would be root in March?

You read it wrong. It's a question not an answer. Do you THINK we will have root by March 1st? As for your question I wouldn't loose any sleep over taking the update. You can flash back to the previous NI1 with Odin if needed. If you are worried about any future OTAs being forced on your phone see this thread or this one and follow the directions to block the OTA.

Jan security patch OTA

Has anyone seen this yet?
I saw the files were available for manual, but nothing on the OTA front yet.
İf you mean Oreo 8.1 January patch, it is already pushed one week ago. Maybe you can try forcing it by pushing check updates in settings?
