[Q] Android Tablet - About xda-developers.com

Archos 7 Home Tablet
This is an android tablet, supposed to be running android 2.1, ad the adlilb marketplace, which is an android marketplace for the tablets.
Anyway, looking at the tabs, i cant spend the money to get the samsung galaxy tab.
Trying to see if this is even worth getting. its not really for work, more of a play kinda thing. Ive looked into it, not at good as any others out there, but looks like it could do the trick.
Also does anyone know if it will be modable, maybe i could find a way to get a custom rom.

Is hot and cheap but u can also get the viewsonic g tablet wit da nvidia tegra 2..cyanogen got a rom for it too..

You're better off getting the 70 Internet Tablet. Runs 2.2, about to be rooted (hopefully), thinner, lighter, better tablet. The home is old.

[Q] General question :)

So i was thinking of getting a tablet, my first choice (instinctive) was for a windows tablet, so i looked around and of course there's no good ones
So i have an evo and my next idea was an android tablet, but i was wondering if you guys could help me because to me the idea of having 2 devices with the same type of operating system (tablet and phone) seems kinda redundant but i know theres good integration by google made and im actually looking at the Asus EEE pad and the HTC Flyer (maybe the Puccini) so i was wondering if you guys can answer that and maybe direct me to a tablet that would be useful for me? i am currently a college student studying Electrical Engineering and i watch movies (netflix subscription ) and browse the web a lot and as well as look at pdfs and write notes.
Thank you
People are dumping their xooms for asus transformers that must say something right? The Asus has a 10" 16gb for 399.99 screw the xoom. Transformer also got great reviews across the board. I'm going to hand my ipad 1 down to my woman and buy my first android tablet. Only thing is...those suckers are sold out in Houston. Fyi the htc flyer is a joke dont waste your time.
to me the xoom was always a fail that price was way too high for something that came out a bit unfinished, played with it and i was really unimpressed.
and idk i liked the flyer since the evo came out really nice i thought the flyer would have really good things too and the pen doesnt seem that bad i think but i have yet to play with it so i want to wait til it comes out. i feel it might be too similar to my evo though
and yea Asus did it amazing i think, their tablet came out really just sucks their production didnt get hurried up til now but yea that was one of my options for sure
Xoom's price is a joke and that's why it only sold like 100k units in the US. HTC flyer is like an overgrown evo its not a significant difference; Reminds me of the Samsung galaxy tab (fail) lol. I really want to get my hands on that Asus just have to find one. You could always get an ipad they're pretty sick. I hear the android tablet by dell and the HP webOS tab will be sick. I'm not impressed at all with the blackberry Playbook.

yea it is and they still arent even bringing it down so yea to me that tablet isnt good.
the flyer does look like that horribly it has no difference to the evo except the magic pen which would be useful for notes but idk how responsive it is, i heard that its really not that great though.
yea i saw a couple online for like 450+ for the 16gb one and yea so not getting it yet lol i want the msrp for that since its so cheap
the ipad is good but to me after playing with the ipod touch and the ipad already i dont see it being useful in an academic environment i might be wrong though but havent seen it that useful for regular school work
the 10 inch one? i have heard a few things but nothing solid yet. and the touchpad i have yet to hear anything about it either so i cant comment on those but competition is always healthy for us consumers
and yea the Playbook was a fail by blackberry, hasnt made any impact and half the features are still coming soon i think
Well there you go...here's your solution. Asus 10" 16gb 399.99 perfect for school!
Look up some YouTube videos people are comparing it to the xoom.
If you're in college you probably need something that will actualy do some work. Considering that you're in engineering you probably need more than an Android tablet for serious college level computing. I have an ASUS T101MT with 2gb ram running Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2010. I'm still doing setup and testing to maximize the configuration, but it's probably not going to be the ideal video playback device. I bought it mostly for light weight, small size, and portability for when I travel. It's small but I can still do a lot with it.
In your case, it may be too small for daily use as your primary system. If I only had one device in your circumstance, I'd want the ASUS EP121. Plenty of power - Core i5 with a 12.1" screen, 4GB memory, and comes with Windows Home Premium. The one with the 64GB SSD runs $1100, but it would do everything you'd need it to do for your time in college.

thanks ill keep my eye out for it then imma see if i could actually find one to play with before deciding on what would be best

yea i have a main system which will be upgrade soon (to a Asus G-73), i have a dell studio xps with windows 7 ultimate and office 2007 installed along with multisim and any other school software i need but due to its size and weight it is a hassle to take it to class everyday and i just need a quick device to be able to glance things on the fly and be able to use it during class a bit if you know what i mean?
that is the windows 7 tablet i was actually considering, seems very versatile and extremely well built, to the point that it seems worth investing the type of money. and it would be an improvement over this laptop i have and its bigger than my phone i want like an in-between device i guess. this would also have some essential tools but i think android and ipad cover word and excel good i think right?
Wait for the evolution view tablet
midget tossing is habit...2010 midwest regional champion... hw 001
whats the diff between the view and the flyer?
the flyer is the wifi version isnt it? and the view is the 3g one from sprint

I'm not sure which Win 7 tablet you're referring to, but the T101MT is really small and light, which is what I got it for. Still can run Win 7 and Office and has a 250GB hard drive. My son uses his ASUS 1001HE Netbook for school and has gotten two years of work out of it and it's still going strong. He uses it daily to remote desktop back to our network and access his desktop from school. The only reservation I have with either of these is the 1024x600 screen, but that's because I'm an old geezer and can't see up close anymore. For you youngins, it may not be an issue.
I think a pure tablet sans keyboard is pretty cool for some things, but in an educational environment you probably want something with a keyboard. Then you have to ask if you can do without Windows/Office. We have tons of stuff on One Note which we find very useful, so for us the decision is pretty easy. Plus our servers and the rest of our network are all MS OS so it gets pretty hard to give up the integration factor. I'm not trying to down talk any other platform, but with as much as I have invested in a powerful and flexible network it only makes sense to leverage its functionality. YMMV

lol its fine i wear glasses so ill be able to see regardless of the resolution
i could do without office and windows all i really need is a pdf program and i so far am loving evernote as well as quick office and documents to go so with those things are more than enough to do without office and windows i think. and yea to me windows is just a convenience since its what im used to using lol

Should I Get a Tab 3 10.1?

Hey guys, I currently have a MacBook Air 11, and I am looking for a tablet that I can use for when I don't wanna pull out my Macbook.
I am trying to spend less than $300. So I can get a refurbished Tab 3 10.1 for $225. However I can also get the first Galaxy Note 10.1(first edition) for $250.
I also can get an iPad 3rd gen for about $275.
So I am a bit conflicted. I just want something cheap that I can browse the internet on, play a few games, and use SmartGlass for my XboxOne
If look around get a nexus 10 for under 300 or nexus 7, if not just go with refurbished one

Would the Nexus 10 be better than the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?
Depends what your users are going to be. Being you have a Mac, I say go with iPad (as much as I hate saying that). You already have apple asps and usernames that would make it easier for you.

Well I do have a Macbook, and an iPhone 5. But I am trying to get out of the apple ecosystem.
I'm going to get an android phone when my upgrade is up.
Basically my uses are going to be: Using while I'm in bed, on the couch to mainly surf the web, email, play a few games here and there, and use for SmartGlass for my Xbox. If it's anything more than that, I'll just use my Macbook.

I think it is wise to switch as long as you've done your research first. It can be expensive switching ecosystems, but Android tends to be much cheaper that iOS from what I've witnessed at least. But that is only part of what makes Android wonderful. As for the Tab 3 10.1, right now, I'm struggling because I wanted it to have user switching. That's something supported by Jellybean, but alas, Samsung has omitted it from this build. So I've been searching everywhere for custom ROMs but it seems that no one is developing for it because it runs on Intel and people aren't used to that structure just yet. All I can do it root is and tweak things here and there, but not what I want it to, so my point of view is a little skewed toward dislike.
If you have the funds, I would recommend the Nexus 10 32GB. Unfortunately, Nexus devices don't have microSD expansion like the Galaxy devices, but it has all the features it should and it would be easy to find custom development for it once you get bored with the stock UI.
TBH I personally would NOT recommend you buying the tab 3 10.1. I'd rather buy a Nexus 7 2013 or a Nexus 10 or a LG Gpad 8.3.
thsi is because of the silly Intel processor within the tab and Android not really cooperating with it.
You'll be better off running an ARM processor.
Just my 2 cents. Hope you enjoy whatever tablet you buy.
And as much as I dislike Windows 8 it works well on tablets. So that is also a good choice IMO
Good luck !

How would you say the tegra 3 compares to the intel chip in the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?

Do you think it would be a good first device to dive into android with?
Thank you all for replying.
I had a dell streak 7 and it had a poor following for development, but I used it enough to know my next tab would be a 10 inch.(7 inch Too Small) I just got this tab 3, and it is killer. It doesn't have any custom ROMS that are drastically different that stock, Still...it is running the newest version of Jelly Bean, and really doesn't need "upgrading" It is so snappy and fast, I am tickled to death with it. I love the stock OS, and I figure by the time I get bored with it Cyanogen Mod will be available for it. Of course my view is also skewed because I was struggling with a Dell Streak 7 (slowpoke) before I got my Tab 3. I also enjoy (watching) the developers forum for this device, it's very entertaining because they discover new things about this tablet every day it seems. That stuff is mostly over my head right now, but I hope to learn more, so I can contribute in the future. Good luck with your choice...I just love mine.
I just bought a Tab 3 10.1 from Amazon last week. I also purchased a leather case with Bluetooth keyboard to go with it. The order total was 311 for me and well worth it. I also have a Galaxy s4.
I think if you are looking to switch to the Android ecosystem I would recommend setting up a Google account now if you do not have one already. The one thing I like about Google and the android environment is the built in cloud environment.
I am on my 4th Android phone and first tablet and have never had to transfer or backup contacts, settings or files. I log into the new device it automatically downloads the settings wallpaper and apps I use. The contacts are stored in the Google account on Google servers. I have seen even the most experienced iDevice users try to mimic this seamless integration but fall short (though not impossible).
My only advice in order to make sure you never have to back up files and pictures (with caution) is to utilize Google drive if you do not already.
When I first moved to Android from Blackberry the selling point was that my contacts are stored in my Google account. Saved my life many times.

Well guys, I went to BestBuy to check out the tablets.
I looked at the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1, Note 8.0 and 10.1 and the Nexus 7.
The two tabs seemed a bit sluggish when getting in and out of apps, and the load times in chrome were a little slower compared to the Notes.
The Note 10.1 is the perfect device for me, I absolutely loved it, but it's way out of my price range. But I also loved the Note 8.0.
The Nexus 7 seemed nice too, but it was in some demo mode so I couldn't actually open apps and such.
How does the Note 8.0 compare to the Nexus 7? At this point I think I like the Note 8.0 more, purely based on form factor.
Edit: How much faster is the Note 8.0 than the Tab 3?
Also how does the Note 8.0 compare to the original Note 10.1?
As far as I am concerned NO MORE SAMSUNG. Samsung just doesn't support…update the system on any of their tabs. I am selling my Galaxy 10.1 note today and getting something else. Sold my S4 and got a nexus 5 and am very happy.

Well that is interesting.
If you had to recommend me a tablet, what would you recommend? Other than the Nexus 7.
I'd Recommend the LG Gpad 8.3 Google Play Edition as it has a slightly bigger screen.
I do NOT recommend Samsung devices as they have a CRAP LOAD of bloatware installed. Quite a few of those things run constantly using up RAM/CPU and eating battery life and in return, they give nothing.
I'd rather have an AOSP based ROM without the 'goodies' than a stock ROM with them.
I've owned 4 samsung devices so I think I can speak for them
This is my skightly skewed opinion. you should decide what you buy. We are just giving you advice
MY advice would be to purchase a google play edition device/ Nexus device as I find them the best in terms of everything

Well maybe I should just get the Nexus 7.
I can't seem to find a Google Play G Pad in my price range :/
Did you get the Nexus 7? I was going to until I found that some of the 2013 model had screen/hardware and touchscreen issues. My wife has the gtab 2 10.1 which I put cm 4.3 and a custom overclocked kernal on and it runs smooth and quick. After using it a while I wanted something a bit smaller for myself and settled on the gtab 3 8.0. I like the size much better and the screen is plenty big and bright. It is quick and responsive with the stock rom. There is some development happening for it including an overclocked kernal and I am waiting patiently for a stable rom.
If you bought the Nexus, let us know how it is. I hope it's one of the good ones.

Tab s 10.5 vs nvidia shield tablet

In general
Tab s 10.5 vs nvidia shield tablet?
For gaming,movies,browsing internet,yt
I looked at it as the Nvidia being a one trick pony. Granted if you want something for mainly gaming, then the Nvidia is where it is at. I use my tablet for about 25% gaming, so I went with the Samsung.
i used my old Nexus 7 with tegra 3 in 50% for gaming(mc4,blitz brigade etc)
25% internet
25% movies
Hell, if you have a nexus 7, I would hang onto that until a new nexus pops out. You still have a hell of a tablet. I just upgraded from a first gen kindle fire.
I had,year ago
now i dont have anything
Ahh. I see. Well, either way you can't go wrong. If you use your tablet for over 50% gaming, I would probably get the shield.
In raw power the Nvidia wins. But we all know we got the Tab for it's screen. Pros and cons, nothing's perfect.
I had the Samsung galaxy tab s 8.4 for about a week. It had a really beautiful display but that was about it Imo. Plus having such a high resolution made most apps look like ****. Specially Facebook and instagram pictures. I returned it because I just couldn't handle TouchWiz. Oh man, it was a struggle for me. I got a Nvidia shield tablet as soon as it came out, and boy am I'm glad I did. I don't really game much on a tablet, but I bought it because I was just looking for a better than average tablet running stock android and I didn't want to wait for the next nexus. I'm pretty blown away by this little guy. It handles everything I throw at it. The SD card slot is awesome, the built in pen works way better than expected and the speakers just kill the speakers in the tab s. I connected my DS3 to it and it handles pretty much all the games great so I find myself playing more games now. This tablet it by no means a one trick pony. I'd say it's far from it, if you like just consuming media off of Netflix and HBO GO like I do this thing takes it to another level because you can just hook it up via hdmi and watch it on the big screen something the tab s can't do. I'm super happy with the Shield tablet. I'd say the tab s is more of a one trick pony because all it really has going for it is a nice display.
Just gonna throw this out there. You can avoid Douchwiz by just downloading another launcher (ie. Nova) from Play store. All of your other points are valid. I just don't understand how someone could be posting on XDA and not know that the stock launcher is replaceable.
I guess that all depends... Do you want a big screen or a smaller one? 8" vs 10.5"... For gaming, do you just wanna play Android games or also stream games from your pc?
For real? How can someone try to compare NVIDIA TABLET SHIELD with another ****ing **** of Samsung? Look at the price and it's all said !!!
Sorry if I offended anyone but...

Let's not be assuming things now. I know the stock launcher is replaceable. My launcher of choice is always Nova. However the notification panel and quick settings and all this other stuff TouchWiz adds on top to try and enhance your experience ends up being the total opposite. Vanilla Android for me from now on, I've leaned my lesson.

Touchwiz isn't just a launcher. It's the entire framework that fills up the OS.

Hey hey hey....let's not bait them till it's more stable.
If I didn't mind losing the super amoled screen and having only 8 inches of real estate to work with (that's getting smallish) I would by the Shield instead. For me 8.4 inches is already minimum acceptable size.

yeah cyanogenmod is awesome, i just didnt want to wait for months messing around with touchwiz until a stable version got released
I just exchanged the shield tablet for a tab s. It is really nice. Fast. Sound is great. Controller works well. I had a couple problems. Both are becoming widespread problems. The first is the wifi was dreadful. I have 2.4 and 5.0 connections at the house and constantly had to switch between the two to keep the connection. The second which was more concerning is that i had cracks in two of the four corners of the case. Nvidia had acknowledged the issue. I really wanted to love it but with those issues straight out of the box it concerns me. The other thing was the screen. Although nice you had to ramp up the brightness alot and the battery life took a big hit. Its a great tablet but i would hold off until they figure out the build quality problems.
better wait for the new nexus tablet if gaming is your primary need

[Q] Nexus 7 replacement?

so this thing is starting to get long in the tooth. any recommendations for a replacement? I love the screen size, anything similar?
Faster ROM needed?
Have you compared the speed of this 7.1.2 ROM with your current ROM?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013/development/rom-t3569067
Mine still runs fine speed-wise but I'm also starting to look for a replacement. My battery life isn't quite what it used to be. I have three to replace in my house too. Lineage ROM support is a must though.
To bump this, my digitizer seems to be getting tired, often takes almost a long press to get it to pay attention. I've played with all the tablets at the local shops, nothing really catches my eye. Spec wise, it seems there's nothing that quite matches for size, LTE, ease of mods, etc.
When this dies, I'll be looking at whatever small lte Samsung is out, or a Huawei/xiaomi/asus whatever has good support on here if I decide to go cheap.
FWIW, I ended up getting a Tab S2 when they went on sale for $300 a while back. It's not LTE, but I have a pocket router I use when I need to get online away from the house anyway, so that wasn't an issue. For what it is, it's a great device.
Unfortunately, Android tablets seem to have gone nowhere. Unlike Apple, who is dedicated to the tablet format, few Android OEMs seem to even try now.
Mine has been pretty unresponsive for YouTube and kodi in the last few days. I've tried two different roms, many reboots, no luck. I'll try a factory image and see if that helps, but I think it's pretty much done for. I'll be trying out a fire HD probably, since I know it will be in my pocket mowing the lawn, and in the garage.

It infinitely reboots after 30 seconds of being on in recovery, dl mode, and system. What would be a good priced tablet to buy second hand? Pixel C, s2? I want an android tablet so no iPad for me .
I want to use it mainly for Kodi and watching movies, with some light gaming, so 16:9 or similar is preferred.
Appreciate your feedback!
I don't know about second hand market. It seems like most Android tablets have some kind of a big flaw which begs a question, why pay premium prices for them? I'd look into buying the Amazon Fire HD 10, which may have flaws, but has decent specs, and is actually cheap.

Can you please elaborate (Android tablets have some kind of a big flaw) What flaw are you talking about ?
Well, I don't know of any well rounded Android tablet on the market right now. For example, Tab S2, updates probably ended with Android N, no stereo sound in landscape mode. Asus Zenpad, same story. Looking at the Tab S3 forums, there is a long list of issues with it too. The new Huawei Mediapad M5 has no headphone port. and so on.. Every Android tablet has some kind of a pain in a butt problem, which makes me wonder, if there is no good mid-level or high-end Android tablet, why pay premium prices for them? The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2017) costs something like 150USD or less and actually has decent specs.

I am not sure what you are looking at in terms of the tab S3. I have one and it is an excellent tablet. I bought it as my old Tab S was getting a little slow after 3 1/2 years. The only issue I have with the tab S3 is the lack of ROMs as while stock is fine, I like to tinker. I also have a Fire HD and it is pretty basic, you get what you pay for.
