Okay, I have rooted my phone and have tried to read as much as I can to get comfortable flashing a new ROM...
I have ROM Manager Pro installed and I really want to try to flash a new ROM.
Can any one give me a step by step on how to flash a new ROM??
and then how to revert back to the old ROM if I dont like the new one??
I have created a NAND Backup, I have backed up all my apps and my pictures and everything... I am just scared if I flash a new ROM and do not like it - I will not know how to flash the stock ROM back on to the phone...
I know I am probably a pain in the ass here on the forums...but any help any one is willing to give me would be greatly appriciated!!

Check the link in my sig, that whole thread is useful, but I put together a detailed walk-through in flashing your first rom once the phone is already rooted. Report back if you still have any questions after you check out that thread.

WOW - that was awesome!! Thanks for all the info... Now I think I am ready to flash my first ROM... how ever - now I am wondering about kernels and all that - do you by chance have a walk through for doing that as well??

no prob, glad you liked it To flash a kernel, you would use the same steps you used to flash the rom, except instead of wiping all three, you'll just be wiping cache and dalvic cache (and not the Wipe data/factory Reset option). Make sure you've booted up into your new rom before you flash your new kernel and you should be ok.
Cool, sounds simple enough

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster.
I finally gave in and fully rooted my EVO and successfully flashed the newest damagecontrol rom. Afterwards, I took some time and set up my phone like how it used to be with the apps, settings, etc. Just a few questions from after this.
If I wanted to flash a different ROM, it is recommended to do a data wipe, correct? And also a NAND backup. Does this mean that my phone will be reset to factory settings again - using the new ROM as a base? In other words, would I have to rearrange my screens, settings, etc. if I wanted to try out a new ROM?
If not a different ROM, but an updated version of my current ROM, do I just flash that on top of what I have? (i.e. DC4.0 is released, do I have to wipe everything again before upgrading?)
If the answer is yes to both these questions, what are the easiest/quickest ways to get my phone looking/acting the way I like when getting a new ROM?
also, I followed toast's method step by step, and got the Amon Ra recovery on my phone as well. What is the function of this? Sorry for all the questions, I have everything working fine, but I'm just curious as to what and how things work on the phone. What is the difference between the amon ra recovery and following steps to use clockword for recovery?
Thanks a lot

Hello there, iv done videos on this rom for youtube, if you want the links let me know but ill go as it follows.
Ok, if you want to test out new roms, just do a nand backup of the one you have now, after that. WIPE both Factory and Delvic cache. Then flash the new rom in your phone adn you will be fine.
Ok, i know DC does this, i dont know about the others yet, But if a new update comes out, just flash that DC update over yours and it will be fine. All user data will be there. YOU shouldn't have boot loop ether. If so, then you will have to wipe again. I didn't and im fine. ( I use fresh evo right now. loving it. )
As for the NAND backup. This saves EVERYTHING so once you are tired of a old rom and wanna try another, just restory the back up and your fine.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! That cleared up a lot of things for me.
So if I have everything set up the way I want, it is recommended to do a NAND backup at this point?
Also, what are the pros/cons of using Rom Manager (marketplace)?
Thanks a lot

what do you mean? like the different kinds of recoverys? Really i just stay with toasts, his is more stable and as far as the clockmod one, It has issues with formatting the Factory cashe.
Honestly, for someone that is completely new to flashing roms, backing up etc., Rom Mgr. is the best thing for you. You may not have the absolute cutting edge of available roms, but it makes flashing/backing up extremely easy and straightforward. That is how I got started with my previous Droid until I felt comfortable enough to flash the old fashion way. I have literally flashed and backed up hundreds of times using clockwork mod (rom manager recovery) and have not had a single issue. Plus, the app is only a couple bucks if I remembe correctly. I would start there to gain some experience, then move on to flashing zips from here.
just my opinion.
Will rom manager work if I have Amon RA's Recovery?
I think it may replace your recovery
So, yesterday, I decided to finally jump into the abyss and try to root my Evo. Luckily, everything went completely smooth the first time (never had that happen with any other device). I was actually surprised how easy this root was.
Anyway...my question is, if I decide to flash another ROM on my phone, or rather, in 10 minutes WHEN I flash another ROM onto my phone, if I decide I don't like it, how do I reflash my original NANDROID backup back onto the phone?
I was able to navigate on my SD to where the backup was saved, but shouldn't it be a ZIP file or something? I only have individual backup files.
Also, sorry for the noob question.
Thanks in advance for your help
You go into recovery to do a nandroid restore. Its not something you flash. There is an option for backups and restore. You just run those. I like to do a full wipe before a restore though, just in case. Oh, and keep your backups in the original folder, thats where recovery will get them from
I appreciate the quick response! Thanks
No prob, hope it helped
It definitely helped to get back to the stock ROM, but now it appears as though no other ROMs are working for me. I've tried MIUI and MikFroyo, and they both get stuck in boot loops. There's something I'm apparently not doing right. Hmmm.
Did you wipe data/cache/dalvik before flashing the roms?

Are you updated to the latest Radio and pri? You have to check what version you have and what version you need to flash the rom you want to use. That is most likely the problem. I know older kernels do not like the new radio or pri. You probably have to update them and you should be fine.
Hi I would like try the new rooted stock rom but not sure if I need firmware also. Do I need to flash radio and other firmware coming from CM7 which is first custom rom for me? Is everything needed for using a new rom usually included? I am trying to learn proper method to switching roms. CM7 works great so I am trying not to screw anything up. Thanks for any noob help!

No, you don't need to flash radios for any ROM. But people are having good results with the new radios.
IF you decide to flash them, make sure you read the exact procedure. Making a mistake with flashing radios is the one way you can brick your phoone
Just search for the method on how to flash a ROM there are countless threads already dedicated to explaining this
^^ What he said.
But to carry that further.. read up on what you are flashing. In general, you need to do a wipe of your phone (Done from the recovery console - factory settings), clear the cache, clear the dalvik cache, and flash the new rom -per instructions included with the rom you are downloading (from the forums)
Some switches, you dont have to do anything other than flash a new rom over an existing rom..
Read up and pay attention.. when you flash a new rom.. sometimes pieces of the other rom can be left behind and when you are up and running.. can cause issues.
Good Luck!
And don't forget to nandroid backup before attempting to flash it. That way if something goes wrying or you don't like the ROM you can just restore from your backup

alright, so im gonna flash the Manhatten rom and im not too sure what my complete steps are, i've asked around but im still kind of confused.
im coming from stock everything.
do i wipe data, cache, and dalvik first?
and then flash rom, and gapps and then reboot?
also, do i need to flash any radio/bootloaders? (i was told i would need to? this is the most confusing part for me)
right now i have a gsm version
4.0.1
Baseband Version: I9250UGKL1
Kernel Version: 3.0.1-ga052f63
[email protected] #1
Build Number: ITL41F.I9250UGKL1
if anyone could tell me a step-by-step way of doing it, that would be great.
Thank you so much, this is an awesome community coming from Blackberry, and im very happy with my galaxy nexus
i stole this from the aokp op, but its pretty much the same thing unless it tells u different on your roms op
1. Make sure you're on the latest CWM
2. MAKE A NANDROID
3. wipe data/factory reset in recovery -- a must if coming from a stock-based ROM
4. flash ROM
5. flash Gapps
6. reboot
7. sign into Google
8. (recommended) reboot immediately after
btw some roms might come with gapps already with it so u can skip that step...but like i said read the op of the rom ur flashing
how about the radio/bootloader aspect of it?
will i need to flash any of those at all?
Have you unlocked the bootloader yet?
yeah bootloader is unlocked, and is rooted.
also, when i make the nandroid backup using CWM, when i wipe data, will it wipe the backup? or should i copy the backup to my desktop

Your backup will be safe. Think of the memory on your phone like it's a memory card.. All your pics will be untouched as well
sweet, thanks so much for your help.
just one more question before i take the plunge tonight.
no need to change the radio or anything like that after i flash the rom?
You don't have to, by reading other peoples comments it seems like people have mixed reviews. I personally didn't flash a radio.
Btw you might want to flash a kernel. And you do that after you flash a rom
okay i dont think i will either,
i think manhatten comes with a kernel already "imoseyon" my plan is to flash trinity later on once the bugs gets fixed.
so from what you've told me,
i'll follow steps above, and if all else fails recover from my nandroid backup
thanks so much for your help wayne
ps: one more thing i should ask, if i do end up having to recover, will it recover that stock rom no problem?
Yeah it won't be a problem. Plus you always have xda to help u out.
First of all, I don't know that much about ROMS but I know that they will make you save battery and let you customize it better. I just don't know how to install the correct and best ROM for my device. I would like some help with this and need someone to explain everything about ROMs please. Thank you in advance.

First, there is no correct or best rom for a device. You find a rom that has the features that you want. The "best" rom will be different for most everybody. Just flash a rom, try it out. When you get bored, nandroid the current rom, then flash another rom. Repeat until you're satisfied. Some people are just too chicken **** to mess around on android phones, but barring complete idiocy (like flashing an ill-matching rom) or an EFS corrruption, you won't screw anything up.
As for the "explain everything about roms," go onto the home page of the XDA forums. Go into each "general" forum of each phone subforum and I GUARANTEE you will find a newbie [GUIDE] to android/roms/flashing/anystupidnewbquestion.

One more question. What is the adama kernel? I want to install the sonic team rom but don't know if to still the adama kernel. It is optional
I'd recommend against it. Until you know what "normal" behavior is for modded roms, you don't want to convolute the whole thing by modifying the kernel as well.
Basically what you do is make a backup in clockwork mod recovery and then put the rom on the root of your sd card then you reboot back into recovery then do the wipe data/factory reset then you wipe cache then go in to the advanced tab and wipe dalvic cache then go to install zip from sd card and install the rom and then once again wipe cache and dalvic then fix permissions and reboot then your good
