[Q] Family Room app alternative? - Defy General

In about 8 hours I will be moving from Blackberry 9700 (amazing phone IMO) for the Defy.
Life is kinda busy with two kids under the age of three so the whole family room app seems kinda attractive. I'm curious to see if there is an app that I could use instead.
My wife has a Mytouch 3g and wont be able to get the FR app so anyone got any ideas?
I guess with a bit of planning I could get around it but I'm looking to be lazy.

Tethering meaning through the USB cord no free wireless hotspot feature like on my evo?
I did have the ipad2 for 30 Days although smooth but missed my android customization & hated that all normal apps were paid & stupid iTunes...

i am not too sure, but u can do wireless tether, i did it only once, but it will drop battery of iPhone faster then 10 android phones battery...i phone is good only till you use it the way Steve Jobs wanted it...and Mr.Control Freak made sure to design iPhone such a way that once you revolt against it, you will pay in the form of battery life or system performance...
iPhone is nice, if you're into "that" sort of thing ;-)

I have both the E4GT and the iPhone 4 as daily drivers. Do yourself a favor and get the E4GT. The OS is better, the ROMs are better, and the hardware is better.
Unless all your preppy friends are forcing you into an iPhone there is no reasonable excuse for getting one.

I will warn you about one thing regarding tethering on 4g on ET4G, try different locations on your home where you phone connects to 4G and as soon as it does, make it and build a cement concerts stand will iron protectors etc and then put ur phone there and start tethering...because if you move your phone by one millimeter it will lose 4g connectivity...I think ET4G is cancerian so its very sensitive... Just kidding but with iPhone you will not be able to tether on 4g speed only 3g speed and you know sprint 3g speed...I would rather pay MacDonalds to establish next to my house so I can get high speed internet...

You answer your own question when you said you love customization, forget about iOS. I had an iphone, ipod touch and a ipad, sold iphone and ipad. i4s its for me a dummy phone with smooth interface. It gets boring after a while.

I actually use miui rom so no 4g
I have been a big fan of Android since my first phone...The Samsung Moment...perhaps in spite of it.
Originally I wanted an iPhone but Sprint didn't offer and and I wasn't about to get AT&t...then Verizon offered it an I wasn't about to leave Sprint...now Sprint offers it and there is no way I'm leaving Android.
I never touched an iDevice until a few days before the iPhone4S came out. I got to play with one at the local Radioshack. Everyone there was all "OMG, you can play with the newest iPhone"...so I figured, what the hell...I'll play with it.
...now, I'm a technophile...I love technology and have a very open mind. I'm not an Android fanboy and I'm certainly no Mac hater....I wouldn't pay for a Mac, but, every PC I own also dual-boots to a (perfectly 100% functioning) Hackintosh installation. At first I did it just for kicks and the challenge of getting everything working...then I actually became very very impressed by Apple's aesthetic. Less is more. It was very hard to use until I turned off my PC/Windows trained brain that would just think too much about how to do something...things flowed naturally. So, as long as I don't need any of my Windows based content-creation tools (heavy duty pro audio and video apps...no, I don't like the Mac alternatives, I have 15 years of practice with my audio app of choice and 10 or so with my video) I will be doing my browsing and basic computer use on the Mac partition.
So...I pick up this iPhone, I swipe around...then I start wondering where everything is? It's like I'm stuck in my app drawer. The one button, while very obvious in function at every moment, seems silly. Not to mention the tiny screen. Retina or not, fnck that.
Now, from an fan of Apple's minimalist functionalist point of view it's all there, it's all obvious and it's all effortless. However, from an Android users point of view I felt trapped...I had traversed the entire OS in 30-45 seconds. On one hand that is extremely elegant and purpose built...on the other hand, umm, boring.
To be fair I could see an iOS user picking up an Android device and being overwhelmed at all of the 'needlessly complicated' features and overabundance of options.
Also, I hear the iPhone battery life is the standard to beat--though I also hear the 4S bombs in this area because of a bug.
YMMV, etc etc etc
Besides, it seems like a foregone conclusion given your iPad experience...
Mac for me too

I agree with you regarding Mac...The only usable thing from apple, which is eye candy as well as a performer...I have not used windows since 2008 unless I am forced to like while flashing roms etc..

love it!! That should be a bumper sticker.
I know I will get flamed like crazy for this but I actually like my Iphone 4s more than my Epic Touch. Battery life is so much better on the Iphone and the retina display is actually pretty damn good. Once a jailbreak is out you'll be able to tether. I've been an Android user since the OG Evo came out and this is my first Iphone. Even after flashing Roms and undervolting my Epic battery life was no where near as good. There is also NEVER any lag. I used to experience lag all the time wtih google voice on my Epic. And no random force closes. Iphone just works straight out of the box. A jailbreak will also allow some customization but not as much as Android.

No flamming here, iOS works great but gets boring after a while. You're impressed because is your first iphone, wait a few week and gets boring. I sold my IPAD to buy a Android Tablet and with the fail release of the ASUS PRIME, I started thinking to buy and IPAD 2 for christmas, but as soon a I pick and use one, got bored in few minutes and decided not to buy it.

Your lack of lag is interesting since that hasn't been my experience but then again I only have an iPhone 4 and the lag wasn't horrible but definately noticable. Your lag with GV is also interesting I had it horribly on my Eris (since it is over 2 years old now) but haven't noticed it on my E4GT. I've generally found the E4GT smoother with a better looking screen.
I do agree the iPhone battery life is pretty impressive when it isn't bugged and rapidly draining constantly. I've had it drain to dead in less than 4 hours with the screen off, and there is no way to tell what is causing it, the only solution was a factory reset.
It is also no more impressive than my E4GT with equivalent services enabled (that's the big thing people miss, they compare battery life of a 4g device to a 3g device. Turn off the 4g and then compare battery life)
The only place I give the iPhone any significant advantage is in the quality of the Apps available for it. They in general seem to be more polished.

This right now is what I am missing the most from my Nexus 1, I was on CM and having them fix what the community wanted was a big deal.
Even if we didn't get CM, having a Nexus device means Google pushes out it's updates sooner(or at least that's been the case).

this or wait for iphone 5?

So i'm getting fed up with sprint atm since i use my phone alot and while originally my service was great the 3g speed now are unbearable due to how often i need to access files from my servers and just general usage, I'm contemplating on waiting to get an iphone 5 or Grab the Galaxy s3 right now. I've used an iphone 2g before i upgrade to the HTC evo 4g and i say i like both operating system. But i do like how integrated everything is in iOS. =( oh decisions decision.
>_> Asking this in a GSIII forum?
GSIII. hands down. Android > iOS
There's no way I could warrant waiting for an unannounced device period, even a nexus. I say go for the gs3 u can't lose

The iphone 5 is already out. It's called the 4s. Orig Iphone, Iphone 3g, 3gs, 4, 4S = 5. I wouldn't get the 4S I would def go with the GSIII. I am getting a new iphone when they come out to sell on Ebay to the people who are willing to pay way too much for overnight shipping, but I'll be keeping my GSIII for me to use.

Hahahahaha! Okay, now that that is out of the way, GS3 for sure. I too used to use iPhones.. 3/4. Then my buddy showed me a GS2 rooted w/ custom rom. Sold. Got the GS3 the day it was released and gave my iPhone 4 to my girlfriend. Obviously, I hate her. I digress though, I love my GS3 and I do not regret the switch. Running custom ICS AOKP rom and I love it!
That is a no brainer imo. I used to have an iPhone and they don't even come close to the SGSIII. If you like to customize your phone you have to go with the SIII or another Android phone but the SIII is the best on the market I think.
hrmm guess i'll skip on the iphone. Hrmm since i'm stayong android that bring me to the question of unlock galaxy nexus on prepaid or subsided s3 on att hrmm.
>_> Asking this in a GSIII forum?
GSIII. hands down. Android > iOS
+1
I went through a similar thought process recently, coming from 4+ years with an iPhone (3G & 4). Made the switch because a) I was bored (not necessarily rational, but always fun to try something new, plus girlfriend needed a new phone), and b) I wanted a bigger screen. I can tell you now that the iPhone 4 feels far too small in my hands and I couldn't go back. Keep in mind that there is a 0% chance the iPhone 5 will have anything larger than a 4" screen, so that may make your decision easier if that is something that is important to you.
I do not regret my decision. At first I found Android side of things to be less "polished", but the customization couldn't be beat. But frankly, now that I've discovered CM10, I feel that I finally gave the phone I've always wanted. While some of the TouchWiz features were neat, I feel that Samsung's theming, etc. really cluttered and complicated things, and that vanilla Android is much more on par with the iPhone in terms of polish and ease of use. I really question some of their design decisions.

I moved from sprint to at&t like 2 weeks ago. Costs the same. Better data speed , coverage, phones and customer care. Only regret is not switching along time ago. AT&T for the win!
I had a 4s and a gs2 on sprint. Now I have a hox and a gs3. Never going back to an iPhone. Restrictive OS. Boring and dull UI. ITunes. No Widgets! No I'm good on all that.only good thing iPhone had going for it was great camera and battery life. IMO maybe android wasn't better in like GB form (even though I think it was), ICS and JB are wwwwaaaayyy better than OSX.

what do you mean by how everything is intergrated in iOS?
as a phone Samsung was always better than iPhone. Battery is replaceable and memory is expandable. AMOLED screen.
iPhone 5 is a big unknown. Remember antenna issues? Or yellow tint screens? Or sudden cracks on the case? Wanna be Apple beta tester?
iPhone 4S got great battery life, smooth OS and tons of apps going for it.
I say wait for the "iPhone 5" if you can and then see what the Samsung response to that phone is =)

Do you like to tweak your phone?
If you want to play with your phone, and have as much control over how it behaves as possible then get an android phone hands down.
The reason I chose the S III was because I enjoyed my S I, and because I know there is a huge community around this phone that is working around the clock customizing third party ROMS. If you want to hack your phone, the S III community is the best.

I decided no more iPhones until they actually make a killer device. This hasn't been done since the iPhone 4. The iPhones are slower and do less. I say gs3 all the way until apple throws in 2gb of ram and a killer processor and graphics chip. I dislike lag and that's what the iPhone will ultimately get you (even the new one).

As has been stated, this might not be the most neutral place to ask this question... still, here's my story:
I work in an office where *everyone* has an iPhone except me, with my faithful GS3. Previously I had an HTC Desire, which is a nice enough phone but doesn't compare all that well with the iPhone 4S... ever since I got my GS3, people are actually jealous of my phone (people that know nothing about cell phones) and are asking the IT guy why they can't have an awesome phone like me... lol
So long story short, the GS3 is superior to the iPhone 4S in pretty much every respect. Unless you want to wait to see what Apple cooks up for the next generation (and you can bet at this point in the game Samsung/HTC will stay ahead of them, they are already ahead), get yourself a GS3 - hands down the best smartphone on the market right now.
Gargamel has a point.. Wrong place to ask since this is a S3 spot. Though my input is basically the same. I had iphone lovers but once they saw my customization and showing them what the phone can really do they got on android. I also went through all iphones and also currently have an iphone 4 along side my S3. Let me say LTE on AT&T is great.... Iphone got 4.xx MB/S while my S3 got 60 MB/S. I use my S3 more than the iphone lets say that lol. I run into so many iphones with problems it isn't even funny. I do repairs on them on the side for fun.

Nexus , does it fit my criteria?

Hi all i've been eyeing on the nexus for ...hmmm 6months or so ? i loved it's screen and m minimalistic design , after consulting my dad a few days ago he agreed to get one for me after my exams so i've done my fair share of research on the phone and i doubt it will fit my criteria for a phone ....so here are my worries
1. Transferring files from computer , i heard Nexus don't support usb mass storage , is that true? i have a ton of music waiting to be sent to my phone when i get it and if it can't transfer via computer then i might find a phone elsewhere ( if it can't use usb mass storage how do you sent roms to your phone )
2. Volume for me music and video sharing with my friends are very important blasting songs from the speaker or watching a funny video but the dilemma is the speaker is horrible i heard from a fair share of articles and videos which i am a little worried
3. Battery , many reviews have been criticising the nexus's battery saying that it hardly lasts a day for them and the 1750mAh battery just ain't enough is that true ?
4. Camera , 5 megapixels ....is it enough? i've seen some sample shots and they are far than impressive ....the quick capture ability is pretty cool to be honest
this phone is a major buy for me since i've been eyeing on it for so long and it cost quite a lot ....
oh and here are my criteria for a android smartphone
1. Speed , the processor should be quick enough for everyday use and some decent gaming
2. 3G and 4G not needed , being only 17 i cant afford 3G so connectivity ain't really important for me
3. Community, i love discussing problems , exchanging roms with my android smartphone something nexus excels at! ( i love miui JB!! )
4. Uniqueness , my phone must stand out from the crowd , looking special and eye catching the minimalistic design and it's rarity in my area makes the nexus an ideal candidate
5. Price the nexus has dropped a total of RM700 since the day it reached malaysian shores the price was originaly RM2099( 675USD ) and now it's RM1300 ( 418 USD ) which really made my father consider getting it
so is the nexus perfect for me ? or should i look somewhere else?
1. you can still transfer files but its in MTP mode, which is abit like how you transfer files from digital cameras. its abit weird but it works just fine most of the time.
2. audio not too bad and you can get custom kernels to boost the audio for you if you would root your phone.
3. battery is fine, lasts a day easily for me, about 4 hours of on screen time on average.
4. camera is decent. not the best out there, but the quick snapping makes up for that and they still look nice
and the phone meets all your other criteria grab the google play version with is 3G only and you're set
Just a thought... if you're using your phone a lot to blast music and video to multiple friends you may want to just spend a couple bucks and get some speakers you can plug in. The volume is alright on the Gnex but you are not going to be hosting a dance party with it.
I noticed you said you didn't want 3g or 4g. Check with your carrier to make sure they won't require you to have a data package with the nexus.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
to be honest i don't know what are carriers ... all i know is there are ads in the papers with nexus price rather cheaply but have to be paid back at a monthly rate , anyways i am getting my nexus straight from a retialer , going to the shop and just buy it
Speaker sound is low even with kernel tweaks. Luckily I usually hook it to external speakers.
Camera is not good. Only takes good photos when outside in sunlight. I wouldn't say its about it being 5 megapixels (there are plenty good 5 mega pixel cameras out there), but about the flash and camera lense. There is almost zero shutter lag though, which is a plus. All in all I hate the camera on this device. One of the worst cameras I have had.
Software is great, development is great, battery is great on my GSM Nexus, performance is great with Jelly Bean.
Camera, screen tinge and grain (can be sort of fixed with root and screen adjustments), and speaker are all below average IMO.
Zero shutter lag feature was removed by Google in one of the latter updates. You might be able to do it with a custom ROM, but if you want to stay on the latest stock you can forget about that feature. Apart from that the camera is alright but it's nothing special.
Battery life depends on use. Since you are planning to not use 3G you should be able to get a pretty good battery life out of it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
so the speaker is bad? cant any kernel fix this issue?
is there any decent alternative to nexus?

It really depends on if you are going to buy a GSM phone or CDMA phone. I prefer the GSM Nexus over the Verizon or Sprint one. The Nexus would be the best phone to get for development because its easy to root and has a ton of roms and developments. But it is an older phone and there is a new Nexus coming out soon, so development may slow down a tad.
I don't really know what other phone would be a good alternative because I don't have another one. People seem to like the GSM Samsung Galaxy S2, S3 and Note.
I really liked HTC phones in the past, and they usually have great cameras, but they have been kind of iffy lately. Still the One X might be worth checking out. There is no sdcard or removable battery on that phone though.
Nexus is one of the best IMO but has some faults that I will make sure my next phone doesn't have.
I thought u already bought the phone. No wonder i havent seen u around. Nevermind that, here some info..
if u buy the phone straight from a retailer, there is no need to choose to have data plan or not. In malaysia, it all depends on the carrier(sim kad, celcom, digi, maxis). And u will get the gsm version, malaysian always use gsm.
**Be noted that first time turning on the phone, quickly(really quick) turn off data usage under setting or use a sim kad with no kredit, if not, it will auto connect to the net and ur kredit will be used A LOT!
1. You wont notice any lag at all with this phone. Even if there is, it rarely happen and it dont lag much.
2. The battery is great, u wont be using any 3g, so the battery will probably last u the whole day. My average battery life:
Wifi on: onscreen time-around 4-5 hours
3g on: onscreen time-around 3-4 hours
**this is onscreen time, however, the idle time with this phone is amazing, i never have to worry if i go out with the battery not full.
I wont recommend an S2, the speaker, camera and hardware is almost the same as nexus, but more laggier. My friend has one, and his phone always hang and lag like an xperia x8(no custom rom). Plus, S2 price is RM1300+, why pay more for a crappier phone when u can have a better one at a lower price. Im not being biased here but this is my observation..

Oh man, I just got back from Malaysia. Should have somehow psychically contacted me before, and could have saved you some money and met a new friend! I was in KL and Kuching :<
RM 1900 to RM 1200? That is crazy (considering that an average worker makes like 800-2000RM a month or less?)

Ok, so after I got this phone on launch I enjoyed using it alot, everything was good but since it was the international version and I have t mobile my data speeds were too slow. Than the T Mobile version came out and I sold the international version and got this one.
Now this is a perfect phone for me. But since its so powerful and get almost all the things I need done on daily basis with ease, my question is, if I get rid of mt tab and laptop and just do all things on this device you think it will burn out. Will it be able to hold strong for a good year?
I do alot of emails, video watching, skyping, gaming, right now I have been doing all those things off this phone and havent touched my tab or laptop.
How heavy you guys been using this?

Due to my situation I did exactly that with my Droid X. My Droid X lasted the fully 2 years and more using it as my main and mostly only computer. My Droid X is still going strong. So I believe that Galaxy Note 2 can do the same. But with all computers they will show age sooner or later.
But yes, I believe Galaxy Note 2 can last as a main computing device for a year or two.
Titanium Backup shows 770 apps in my Galaxy Note 2 . I use it daily for most computing usage. The only thing I need is Microsoft Office (Word) for customized text boxes that I use sometimes within documents. And without a physical keyboard, word processing can be a pain. So laptop or a tablet with optional physical keyboard can come in handy with that. But otherwise Galaxy Note 2 is a nice daily computer device. Still a laptop or a tablet with optional physical keyboard can sometimes come in handy.
You can also turn your Galaxy Note 2 into a desktop type computer too. Adding wireless mouse/keyboard, large monitor, etc. Shows how far these PPC (Pocket Personal Computer) devices and Android OS have come. But still as room to grow.

I have been using it non stop so I could understand but it's always a good idea to keep your laptop imho.
It will definitely last a year without any problems. The only thing that seems to go after about a year or so is the battery so eventually you will need to get that replaced. Other than that it should be fine. But a backup device is always a good idea!

Yes, the battery will go. But you can replace the battery with no problem.
Thanks for the response guys. So I guess what I will do is buy a smart dock, sell my laptop and desktop n keep my monitor keyboard and mouse for smart dock, and make N2 my main computing device.
I'll keep my N7 for just incase moments. this will be fun, i love this phone.

What to do with an old tablet?

hey guys, I have this tab 3 (210 version) since 4 years, and recently (well, I can say even 2 years ago) became really slow. So slow that I'm currently using it as an alarm...
But I would like to give it some use, at least to do not have such a big alarm
so, considering that any rom is out-of-date and any app nowadays is hardware-using well above tab 3 skills...how to give is some worthiness?
I was considering to watch some movies while I travels (still it's a 7"...)
thanks!
First, there are many custom ROMs you can try, even Android 8. I personally am using this one:

Another thing you can do is to use it as a camera and look at your dog, home, garage etc when you are out. There are a lot of free apps on Play Store.
Or you can add it at your parents car so they can use GPS and Google maps.
