First, i would like to know if there is a way to keep the phone's data network ALWAYS on H not on 3G and having them switch back and forth it slows down the internet speed. Is there a setting or something i could change.
Second the notification LED. How can i make it so it can blink quicker.. i dont want to stare at my phone for like 5 seconds to see if its blinking or not...
Third the Swype keyboard ?? is it possible to get that keyboard after i put the Cyanmod ?? That keyboard is way better than the original android one.
I have a Rooted ( S- OFF) G2.
Cyan V6.1.0-RC3.
Thanks!

Your phone is only switching back to 3G if it loses the H signal. So that's an issue of your reception, not something your phone can control.
When i had the nexus one. It was always on 3G. Then i Rooted it. Changed radio etc etc.. and now it was 3g and switched to H like my g2 now. Before i hacked the G2 there was no 3g. It was either H or Edge. And everytime it's on 3G now that it's hacked it doesn't use it.. it simply just takes a few seconds then goes to H.
I use anycut from market.
New shortcut

Click on new shortcut
Select phone information
From there I scroll down to force the phone use wcdma.
I don't know if that'll work. You don't need root or anything.
I hope this helps
Sorry if it dont .

It was using 3G before, you just didn't know it. T-Mobile decided that they were going to have their G2's display H for HSPA+ as well as 3G to give people the illusion of almost always using pseudo-4G

The thing is that.. when i do a speed test and my phone is in 3g the speed is around 160-250 kbs then while is testing it switches to HSPA and the speed goes to 2-3mbs.. before I hacked it it was on H. And both of the times I tested in the same place. I understand that tmobile would disguise it.. but its odd that the speed test would switch like that, which didn't happen before. Also 3g and Hspa are two different networks :/
But still thanks for the help.

In my apartment my G2 constantly switches back and forth between UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (H). Is there any way to stop this? Both look like they have the same number of bars, but it seems like UMTS is way slower. I also should be in a 4G market, so is there a way to tell if I'm on HSPA+ or not?
I've honestly never even seen the 3g icon on my g2. whenever im in kent, when it drops it drops from h, to E

I don't think the stock G2 ROM has a specific icon for 3G, if that's what your'e on. It shows H for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+.
I think the original poster is on Cyanogen, where it does show the type of connection a bit more accurately.
I'd also be interested in trying to force an HSPA connection. I don't think Bell has UMTS data so if I'm labeled as on 3G I can make calls and texts but have to wait for it to switch to H when I start using data.
It's a feature of cyanogenmod that it switches to 3G when heavy data is not required and switches to H+ when you need a faster data connection
That is of course if your running CM on your phone...

It's not a "feature" of CyanogenMod. This also happens on the stock ROM but we do not see the H icon, only the 3G one. Cyanogen himself explained this a while back.

You mean stock sees only the H icon, not the 3G one XD
Also note that if you're not actively using data, it'll show the 3G symbol (on Cyanogen or Sense ROMs) - as soon as you start a connection, it'll switch to an H. This isn't necessarily because the phone is switching between a 3G and HSPA signal, but rather because 3G is also used to carry voice - so if the phone isn't using HSPA for data, it obviously doesn't need to show it.
Thanks for all of the information, guys!
Hello all! I installed unity on my g2 and since then I haven't seen 4g at all. Any ideas? Also, I asked this a few days back but I still can't run WiFi without mobile network shutting down. Any help on either subject would be greatly appreciated!

*You should read the first few posts in the unity thread. It mentions that tmo lies about 4G and your phone will only show 4G when you really are in the area.
As for the actual 4G icon, it's been replaced with the H icon. Search the unity thread for the 4g icon mod. *
scratch that. it's gone since the last time the op was taken down. but yeah, it only shows 4g when you're actually in a 4G area. The mention of that is not in the thread anymore unfortuantely...
Final Edit: here's the official statement on that: http://www.virtuousrom.com/p/faq.html (it's the 2nd to last question on the bottom)
Your mobile netwok is disabled when you have wifi. It is normal. It prevents excessive battery drain. You'll be reconnected to your network as soon as you leave the wifi zone.

Thank you for your fast reply! I know that about the H icon, but in places i used to get it, i dont anymore. Maybe something is screwy because i just ran a speed test and it pulled 3.7 meg wit 2 bars 3g. I also understand about the wifi but for some reason i cant get calls or texts and i have to reboot to get the mobile network tgo come back on.

the "H" icon is "4G". If you want the "4G" icon, you can put it in the ROM yourself. You'll only see "H"/"4G" in the areas where the towers have been upgraded to HSPA (which is most major places by now, actually).
When you're connected to wifi, the phone automatically disables your 3G in order to save battery. It switches to "2G only" because your WiFi data is faster.

i'm going to assume that this is the first time you installed unity on it. so yeah, what you thought you had 4g, actually was 3G. the unity rom actually denotes a difference in that and tells you that it's actually 3G not 4G.
Ok man, thank you again for all of your helpful replies. However the "H" icon i used to get all over the place, now i never see it. So what youre saying is that i was never really getting 4g, it just had the H up there. What i understood was gthe H was HSPA or 4g. As i said, i live close to atlanta, so i should have it, i thought i did anyway...lol

Don't worry too much about whether or not you see the "H" icon or the "3G" icon. A lot of times the "H" hangs up there much longer than it should. I noticed on some ROMs that it will just show "H" for a long time even though you've actually moved down to UMTS connection (3G).
As long as you're getting good speeds and not noticing a difference I wouldn't stress about it too much.
Ok, thanks for all of your help as always guys... You ate the best in the biz!

lol np. just a quick search will usually solve you problems though
and to note, isn't ATL AT&T's hq? if so, then I dont think Tmo has much radio space there.
It is at&t, in fact, I'm a lineman for at&t. Tmobile is just cheaper and the service is a lot better.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
well, that's probably why. I'm on att, but i do hate their new "decisions" they've been making..but yeah, tmo probably has a little less power in that area thanks to it being AT&T's hq.
Ok so I have an unlocked LG Nitro HD with custom ROM (CM10) and it has a very weird problem. I've tried two different AT&T MVNO SIM cards (AirVoice and Consumer Cellular) both have the same issue. My data signal keeps changing from H to H+ and occasionally to 3G like every few seconds regardless of where I am using the phone even outside. I don't understand what the problem is. What could be the issue?

Data does work but it seems to drain the battery with the networks constantly switching and on occasion I get a "No Connection" screen on certain apps, I guess because if I open an app while its swapping networks the app cant connect. It's strange.

I had another odd problem, just a few minutes ago was texting someone and all of a sudden phone froze while vibrating then restarted! Don't know if that's a bug in CM10 or what, maybe the network swapping is as well.

I tried installing CM9 and it appears to have fixed the problem, the phone doesn't try to connect to the H+ network anymore, only the H network and seems to stay on it so far. I did see it quickly go over to the 3G network but it doesn't appear to be causing any issues, it went right back to the H network. However, I really wish the CM10 ROM worked right, as CM9 is so old...

CM10 is snappy and oh so buttery smooth, I give you that. On another note, did you try any other CM10 variants? I'd give tdmcode's AOKP a spin. He says he might have fixed that problem you were talking about in his build.

I downloaded the CM10 ROM. It seems to behave slightly differently. It stays on H normally, but when I start to do something with data, it will go to H+ until the data loads, then go back to H. So far no disconnects, I'll keep you posted. Right now I have very limited data, I'm switching to T-Mobile as soon as UPS decides to deliver my SIM card (just found out they have a 1900MHz HSPA+ network in my area!) I'll be able to test it better then, but for now I'm trying to stick to wifi, especially since I wasted so much data tonight playing around with this stuff, lol.

Ditto... H and 3g are subsets of each other. Namely they can handle simultaneous voice and data 4G (h+) and lte can only handle data. So it switches back to H so you can receive and make calls plus it uses less battery. If you are on either 4G techs and receive a phone call while downloading it will automatically switch to H from h+ or lte, this is why. The only way you will never see this is on an AT&T rom where it only has 4G and lte icons.

H+ isn't a subset of 4G is it? I know that the CM's have separate icons for 3G/H, H+, 4G, and LTE.

That certainly is debatable but the US's largest carrier considers it to be, it behaves like 4g, H+ may not be as fast but it is 90%+ as fast in most markets small enough to not make a noticeable difference as far as people's perception and the technology behaves like LTE in a lot of respects, CM is international so it just conforms to International norms so that's why you get H+ AND 4G (LTE) designators.

Hi, I am currently using Wind Mobile, and my area has very good signal. However I notice that the network icon is almost always 3G.
AFAIK, H+ is faster than 3G isnt it? Why am i getting 3G instead of H+?? Before I switch to galaxy nexus I always get H icon on my old G2X, but now i always get 3G! D:
Is there a way to lock it to H+ mode instead of having it swinging automatically?
From what I've read, you need to use your phone before it switches. It reverts back to 3g to save battery, I believe.
That's what I've read.

yeah I know, I want to lock it in H+ though, battery is not a problem for me as I am never away from a charger for more than 10 hours, plus I am a light user, I just want faster speed when I browse youtube or stream music thats all. Battery isnt really a concern to me.

It will change to HSPA+ when the phone is sending or receiving data. So in reality HSPA+ is enabled all the time. If the icon is your only concern you can flash a framework change script or try disabling fast dormancy if your carrier allows it.

I've found that this phone's ability to transfer from 3G to 4G data is absurdly slow, if not completely useless. It also seems that it will never switch if there is data transfer in progress. The only reliable way to make it work is to airplane for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on. If there is 4G coverage, it will come back on immediately into 4G. Now that I think about it, the same thing seems to happen going from 1X to 3G as well.
Example of a common daily routine... When I leave work and walk outside, there is full strength 4G. But the phone will be sitting on 3G from when I was inside. It will not switch to 4G unless I airplane it first to cut it off and back on. The 3G data here is literally like a dialup 14.4 modem. So it will just sit there trying to sync or do whatever its doing until the cows come home. It will never change to the readily available 15mbs 4G data.
It is so bad, I had to make a tasker function to airplane, wait 12 seconds, and turn it back on. I made it a widget called "Reset 3G/4G".
Any way to fix this crap?

Rooted with the FreeGS3 ROM.
My EVO had the same behavior where it wouldn't switch from 1X to 3G if there was active data transfer. Which makes no sense. That's like not changing lanes on the highway because you'll have to look in the mirror first.

Maybe not, but the phone has to pause the connection, disconnect one radio, start up the other, wait for it to be on, connect using that radio, and then finally resume the data transfer.
I don't expect it to happen in a matter of seconds. But what you describe should not take 5, 10, 20 minutes to accomplish. It will not switch between 1x, 3g, and 4g so long as there is data transfer in progress.

True, but it may just be the apps blocking it. If theyre using it, the connection wont get dropped until it goes inactive, if I remember correctly
Here's why that makes no sense. App needs data connection. Phone in 1x with a 20kbps connection, trying to download music or photos. 3g or 4g is available. But instead of switching to it, it will just sit there until the app crashes, or tomorrow when it is done downloading.
Hmm... I'm on stock rooted MB1, and I'm also roaming at work, but there's a somewhat reliable LTE signal right outside the building, and as soon as I walk outside, I see my phone go from roaming, to not roaming, and then I see it switch to 4G in a matter of seconds. I don't need to turn on or off airplane mode or any sort of trick like that. Maybe it's ROM related? Custom kernel related? I'm not saying it is, I'm just listing possibilities.
Then again, I'm also not trying to download music or photos when I see I have a 1x connection, though my current ROM doesn't really tell me if I'm on 1x or not, so I just don't do anything network intensive when in low connection areas.
I just changed some settings in the ##DATA# menu. We'll see if that helps.
