Enable WiFi Tethering over ADB - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there anyway I can enable wifi tethering over adb. I rely on my G2 for internet access and my screen recently quit working. So I was wondering is there anyway to turn on tethering so that I can have internet access when my roomate isn't here with his blackberry.

As far as I know, there isn't really a way to get tethering working with only ADB. Can you explain specifically what doesn't work, the touch screen or the LCD itself? If it's the lcd and you can still touch it, then I suggest using the SDK screenshot tool to help you set up one of the quick keys as a shortcut to the tether app/service. If it's the touch screen, then you might still be able to use the trackpad to set the quick keys also.
Also, I suspect something might be wrong with your data ribbon beneath the hinge, are you sure it's not disconnected?

i believe the G2 still has the input command, and the android SDK has a way of taking screen shots, so you can either do adb shell input key xx where xx is the key number value on the phone(can be found by using clockwork and finding keytest), also my syntax there may be off, adb shell into the phone and type input and see what the phone says the syntax should be. and if the screen is broke you can take screenshots of what "should" be on the screen and move around that way.

Thanks for the help everyone, but I got tired of not having internet i ended up trying to touch it from memory and got it right on the first try. There isn't any damage to either screen, it just quit working while it was in my pocket. I figured it was probably the data cable since I can move the screen up and down a couple times and the screen will change from all white to all black or some other color. I'm not planning on messing with it too much. i have a warranty replacement coming in on the 1st and i'll just wipe it through fastboot and send it in

[Q] Screen locked - hardware issue need work around

My touch screen won't respond to touch or the stylist. This just happened but I am beginning to see some bleed on the screen so I know it's a hardware issue.
Got a new one coming to replace it but here's my problem. My settings are set to automatically lock the screen after a period of time for security reasons and to help prevent pocket calls! Does anyone know a work around with the keyboard to unlock the screen?
Most of the software I loaded is on my PC but whenever I rebuild a phone it's always good to look at what is in the thing via "remove program" option. Needless to say, I can't get there without unlocking the screen.
I tried my magic wand and threatened the phone by telling it I was going to replace it with an iPhone but so far... nothing works.
Thanks,
Rick
The lockscreens are based on touch input. The only option I know of to recover your data is to replace the digitizer.
AFAIK, doing that on Windows Mobile 6.5 Stock is completely impossible. If you can get past the slider screen, you can use the numbers on your TP2 keypad and press enter. But I'm running 6.1 (makes me feel better being used to ye olde Pocket PCs), so I can't verify anything.

[Q] Dead Screen

Hello, everyone.
Well...3 days ago it was raining in my city and I was talking with the Defy on the streets, the phone fell to a puddle in the sidewalk, I just picked it up and kept talking, but then I saw there was some fog and little drops of water inside the screen, though the phone was still working perfectly. The next day the fog was still there and the phone was working, but later that day the screen just didn't turn on and the LED was always turned on in red (but I could see the screen items under high light and I managed to see something in the notificacion bar like "new electronic device recognized"). In order to remove the fog I took the battery off and put the phone under my laptop, so the low heat would vaporize the remaining water and maybe the screen would work again.
Now I have the phone with no fog but the screen is still not working, though I can turn on the phone and it vibrates when I press the capacitive keys and it sounds when someone calls and that stuff, it's just the screen isn't working, all black, like missing the retroilumination. The red LED is always on. So I thought of sending it for repairment, but I can't flash any sbf, as I didn't had USB debug mode enabled the RSD Lite says "unable to retrieve initialization values from INI file (0x7029);phone connected". Can I enable the usb debug mode via adb shell?
The phone is rooted, using JBoogie3 Blurless Honey, it's a Vodafone Spain.
TL;DR version: phone got into a puddle, screen stopped working, red LED always on, can't flash any SBF to send it to repair because usb debug mode is not enabled and can't enable it since I can't see the things that are on the screen.
I'll love for ever the one who can lead me to a solution. Thanks in advance, please help, I'm desperate.
PS: The phone was closed and the rubbers on the sides (headphones and usb) were closed too. Sorry for the long post.
i can try and guide you to the usb debug on of settings if you want
That'd be helpful, any screencaps would be awesome. I think there was no scrolling to do in Settings tab nor in applications, therefore, easier.

first thing first can u get into the settings? if not wat launcher do u have?
GoLauncher EX..I think settings is in the right low corner when you hit menu key in the homescreen..
ok once ur in the settings press near the botton of the screen so the last selection, then turn ur screen sideways and select the last box again to go into development however this time press about 0.5 - 1cm above the botton of the screen. once you in development select get a ruler and from the top of the screen not the fone press at 1.5cm. that should then enable usb debug. if you need any more help just ask or if something does not make sense
Will try several times..but I can't lose time rebooting everytime I try, anyway I can check if debugging is enabled trough adb or something? >.<

[Q] Locked Cracked screen Help!

Hi, I have a very big issue, I dropped my SGH-M919 from a coffee table to a carpet, which seems like an innocent fall/drop, but in this case it wasn't, my digitizer broke inside impeding my ability to see anything, all I have is a blank screen, I can hear notifications as they come in as well as incoming calls, but can't do anything about it, I already have a replacement on the way from tmo, but my main problem is, How do I get my pc to recognize my phone so I can transfer some important data and pictures I have, FYI I have a screen lock 4 digit pin....I'm I really screwed or is there a way for me to recover this data??? Thanks in advance for any help....
P.S. I'm running stock.
Can you get ADB to work with the screen locked? Maybe if ADB work you can ADB pull files. I don't know if it will work just throwing out ideas for you.
If all you have is a blank screen you may be in luck!
1) are there any visible cracks ?
if yes, you may be SOL but doesn't hurt to try step 2.
if not
2) is the blank screen black or white?
If black, try shining a flashlight at an angle. Your LED backlight may have broke or connectors are bad. You might be able to see everything.
If white, google Galaxy S4 disasembly (try ifixit) disassemble your phone and make sure the video flex's and connectors are secure. I drop like that can easily dislodge them.
What data are you trying to pull?
Apps, can always be redownloaded. Purchased apps are attached to your google account as well as contacts and a slew of other things.
Music and Pictures can be pulled just by plugging the phone in and exploring.
SMS and Call Logs, I don't think so unless you get the screen replaced obviously. Replacing the screen does not wipe ur data.
He will not be able to explore phone unless lock screen is disable.

He wasn't very clear about his damaged condition. If you read my possible solutions you would realize screen lock is irrelevant.
If his backlight is out, the flashlight will help him see where to enter screenlock. If his flex is loose disassembly and reinstalling correctly will fix the phone.
Notice how he said "my digitizer broke inside impeding my ability to see anything" implying the fact he doesn't realize the digitizer has nothing to do with his ability to see the screen as that has to do with the LCD. He just says blank screen so hard to tell his problem.
Once you receive your replacement, add the same lock screen and use that as a guide to where to touch.

I blame the youth

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday my rad new Xtrons Android headunit was working almost* fine and today, after following conventional wisdom and letting my 15yo nephew pimp it, it's in all sorts of...well fckd.
Keen on some help from the collective wisdom. Before anyone helpfully suggests a factory reset... well, that's been done, sooo many times. When your nephew CHANGES the factory settings, it becomes a cycle of hell.
Unit is an Xtrons PB86MTVP. 8" HD, Android 6.0' Octa-Core 64bit 32GB.
Current main problem is that the touch screen inputs are reverse and diagonally opposed. What the hell do I mean by that? If I want to type on the qwerty keyboard or simply tap an icon, I have to use my cunning and hit an area or button diagonal and opposite for it to work. If I can get past this issue then maybe I can move to the next one which is that the unit doesnt power on/off with the ignition.
To be clear, things tried (multiple times in some cases) include
Reset via reset button
reset via software app section
undoing car battery
pulling unit back out and disconnecting
turning on and off again
swearing
So, who can help? got a silver bullet?
TIA
Joe
You could go to settings start right down the line set your home screen back and you should have a setting there for different keyboards also that should get yoy back to normal

thanks for the reply djkeylenux. I've got the right keyboard though, thats not the problem. the problem is the touch input on the screen, no matter which screen I'm on.
Well beside calibrate witch I thing you tried you could also go to developer options take a kook at running process see if there's something running causing the problem,
I think you lost the MCU settings.
Go to settings and then into Factory Settings menu. Password is 126.
Then in keys tab re-calibrate the screen. During calibration you will first see a "+1" in one of the corners. Tap it with your finger. Then in opposite corner "+2" will appear. Tap it too. Then accept and apply ypir settings and the unit will reboot. The touchscreen will work correctly then
In the same screen you can also re-configure the touch buttons and physical buttons of yoir device.
It looks like someone potentially did an MCU upgrade/flash. If there was no backup of the settings then you lost it all. Which also means you might have lost bluetooth connectivity as the bt module type on first page of factory setting might be wrong too. Also canbus and other things might be affected. I recpmmend to check out the discussion threads on MTCD devices here. Someone with the same unit might tell you the right settings.
Hint: If you have trouble tapping the icons with non-calibrated screen. Try connecting a standard USB mouse to any of the USB ports.

Question Smashed Display g60s - no touch or visibility

Hi all,
If anyone can help, I'd be very happy! My son dropped his g60s and smashed the display, we can't use it. We can see a small live portion of the screen, but barely visible. We can unlock the lockscreen but can't really do much else as we can't see or touch the screen to select anything.
I would like to recover images/videos if possible. No SD card, and USB Debugging is turned off. Totally stock out of the box phone.
Any ideas please? Googling a solution is not proving very successful.
Thank you in advance.
(I'm a little out of touch with Android, sorry - I used to be regular on here but have not posted on XDA for a while!)
Hi again.
I'm aware of random post etiquette and that this may appear illegitimate or potentially looking for assistance to beach security, so I'm attaching my proof of purchase for ref., and a pic of the damaged display.
I can also get past the screen lock now by attaching a keyboard to enter the pin. But I can't set to allow USB connection as opposed to charge only when I connect the cable, and I certainly can't navigate to developer settings to allow recovery software.
The best option for you if you want to extract data from the mobile is to use one of the usb-c to hdmi adapters with extra usb.
That way you should be able to connect your or in this case your sons phone to the display and connect a mouse to use it as a pointer and to unlock the phone if its password/pin locked.
Usually there might be prompt asking you if you want to connect it to tv, but it might just connect automatically.
Just recently i have purchased exactly the same phone for my mom i can check it for you if you can connect it directly to other display without adding
Yes, search for a USB-C to non-MHL HDMI because the regular USB-C to HDMI dongle does not work. Somthing like this. This will let you do screen mirroring on TV and copy the contents
