Sometimes my internet will not connect unless I quick reboot and even then there is no guarantee it will and other times it connects fine. I don't think its a signal issue, it just seems to be quite tempremental. Is this a common issue or is just one of those things. I'm using a HD version of Froyo and wondered if there was an app or widget to force the internet on and off. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I personally have found that with custom roms some arn't "made" properly and so things like this happen. Happened to me plenty of times. I guess you can update you radio to 5.14.05.17 if you haven't.

Similar issue with VillainROM 0.9
I have a similar issue after I used WiFi.
After reboot the Mobile Data Connection works properly. But if I activated WiFi in the meantime, it will not switch back to MobileData after stopping WiFi.
The only method to get Mobile Data working again is to reboot or switch to flight mode and back.
As well the Mobile Data's ToggleButton in the status bar and the option in the settings sometimes show the exact opposite.
Anyone to confirm this issue?
im would update the kernel and the radio, newest kernel should be no problem but im would not install the newest radio because a couple of people had some problems with the newest version.
Thanks to all for helpful replies, will have a bash with a different radio and rui.

If your GPS isn't working with your new ROM, then try this method. It has worked for me for every ROM I've used with a problem connecting to GPS. I've seen the problem posted in several ROM threads, and instead of posting it in each one and having it get lost in the hundreds of pages of posts, I figured I'd start a new one which might be searched for a little more easily.
- Open 'Settings' and go to 'Applications'. Choose 'Manage Applications'.
- Choose 'Running Apps'
- Find the 'Maps' app and open it. Click 'Force Stop' and choose 'Clear Data'.
- Go back to your app drawer and open 'Maps'. It will have you check off the disclaimers. Close it after you have done this.
- Open your 'Navigation' app and check off the disclaimers there. It should connect after that.
Like I said, this has worked for every ROM I've tried with a problem connecting to GPS. I don't know why it works, but it does.

Didn't solve my GPS issue...which is that it doesn't toggle on what so ever.
Each new nightly I flash, I have to push an old gps.vision.so in order to get my gps to toggle on and off again.
Thanks anyway.
edit: No app on the market will make my GPS work...That is the type of GPS problem that I and some others are having.
try install the gpxfix or gps status from the market.. work well for me..
Same here...this didnt help.
Also installing GPS status did not help either.
As discussed in the nightlies thread, Cyanogen presumeably updated a crucial library responsible, among other, for GPS functionality which requires the/a new radio.
This also could explain why some users while having identical devices to other users do have GPS while others dont. They simply did upgrade the radio already earlier while the ones which are stuck with a bon-working GPS didnt and are still on the original radio, an "old" one in regards to the prerequisites of the "new" library added to the build.
Makes sense?

Yep...this is 100% correct.
And for what its worth, I went a head and flashed the new radio again just too see if in fact it does fix the GPS and yes it does.
Back to the T-Mobile US OTA radio and the gps.vision.so from Nightly #4 or earlier.
not 100% correct, i have the new radio and still have the gps problem... i've seen at least one other person with the same.
But i'm using a Bell Desire Z, maybe thats why

Did you happen to use the app 'GPS Status' to check your gps after you upgraded? If not, what was the first gps application that you opened after you upgraded to CM7, if you can remember?
Scratch that....just reflashed the radio and nightly 13. Gps works a charm now! Thanks

Im on the stock ROM and have a problem. I think the GPS on these phones are messed up big time. Here is my problem.
stock rom with ota update and ota update radio= no GPS AT ALL it will just stick there blinking tryin to get a fixed signal but it wont! Happens in alll my GPS app not just maps.
So I downgraded my radio to the pre-ota one and GPS gets a fix but takes a minute or so.. after that I can leave the app and come back and itll refix itself within 5 seconds (what it should be normally).. So even downgraded I still have slight issues with gps.. plus for some reason if I loose signal for more than 5 mins on this radio it wont ever get a signal unless I reboot.
Im going to try your method but dont think itll work since my problem is not Maps specific.
EDIT: this seems to have worked, even on my the ota radio. I just dont understand why Maps would break GPS for all apps. Funny things is when something like this usually happens I clear app data but didnt do it here because it was all my GPS apps.
I'm glad it has worked for a couple people anyway. I don't know what the problem is that causes this, but it has worked on the ROMs I've flashed, so I figured it might be a good step to take before updating radios and things like that. Just in case the solution is as simple as just stopping Maps and clearing the data... If you have done more modification to your phone beyond just flashing ROMs, then this may not work for you since the problem may be bad radios or other issues. If you are just a ROM flasher without tweaking too much else, then this may solve your problemo.

I used to not have GPS issues either - european Desire Z btw - having said that, CM7 #14 breaks with that uuhm... tradtion. It's the first build giving me no GPS unless a new-ish (the 26.04 and 26.06 works) radio is flashed.
So wat is the new radio, I recently flashed a different radio but I'm not sure if its the latest radio out. Thx

Follow the instructions in this thread. Flash the updater and then the efs wipe tool through recovery.

Hi,
I am having trouble with GPS on my desire since installing gingervillain. On both versions 1.4 and 1.5 GPS just doesn't seem to be working at all. I've tried a factory reset from the recovery menu and have tried re-applying the zip file but with no luck. GPS is enabled but I don't even get an icon on the status bar at the top when it is supposed to be searching for a signal.
Thanks,
Chris
Reach for the skies
Go outside of your house. Point your phone to the sky. Your position should should showing on your GPS.
Or it could be the program itself? Try different gps using apps like maps, facebook places etc etc.
Also do post what radio you're currently using on your phone. It could help people diagnose your problem better.
Tried outside and using gpstest off the market with no luck. I don't usually have any problem with gps inside my house anyway. I don't even get an icon in the status bar at the top it's like it's not working at all. And before anyone says yes it is switched on! My current version is:
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Any help would be much appreciated!

You must have the worlds strongest GPS in your desire. In normal ones, you need to be outside with the phone pretty much able to see the sky. On top of that, ideally it will need to be a clear sky.
Turn on GPS, open up Google Maps / your Navigation software (while outside). On my phone it only used to show the GPS icon in the task bar when a program was running that could use it.
Alternatively download GPS tools from the market (I forget the exact name).
If your GPS is indeed stuffed, take your phone back (if its under warrantee).
My GPS died on my phone. Completely. And before that it kept rebooting the phone. Had to take it back.

Hi
very interested in this thread as my GPS worked fine until I installed Gingervillain 1.4 last week and then updating to 1.5 on Friday
Radio : 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
I downgraded to GV 1.0 and my GPS was working ok again. I heard there was a known GPS problem fixed in GV 1.6 so I upgraded but the problem returned unfortunately. Any ideas?
Update the kernel with Villain set up, it cured my GPS problem.
GVChangelog:
Version 1.6:
* Fixed GPS problem (Thanks to CM Team)
+ kernel update defo works.

Hi,
Could you advise how I go about that? I thought the Kernel was updated as part of the gingervillain setup anyway?
Well I've had more fun with this! I just couldn't get GPS working on anything other than GV 1.0. I completely wiped my SD card and re-formatted the EXT3 partition. I then installed the stock RUU at which point GPS was predictably working. I then went through the flashing process of GV 1.6 and GPS was working this time. It was fine for a week or so but then the GPS stopped working again! I'm thinking it must be something to do with the dalvik cache now, that's the only reason I can think of for the GPS to stop working. I'm running out of patience with GV now so does anyone have suggestions for another stable 2.3 ROM I can move onto?
Thanks again,
Chris
like the thread title says i have this problem.. my google maps is always "searching for gps" in the Navigation function
few threads ago i was posted a problem with GPS STATUS or GPS TEST...
They were not finding any satellite...
later with the help of @superstick1 & @blbean i was fixed it... now these apk finds even 7 satellites!!!!(often LOL)
but Navigation continues without work.... some suggestion?
i was tested:
1-reinstall the apk. (not fixed my problem)
2-erase data caché OF THE APP only (not solved my problem)
3-fix gps sat. with gps status(not solved)but 5 satellites found...
4-use FASTERFIX.apk and then restart my machine (not solved)
EDIT: ufff! i´m desperate more tries:
5-flashed another recommened rom from coredroid thread: 12.28g.60.140f_26.05.05.27_M3 (orange uk)but its weird because i´m living in spain (orange es) (NOT SOLVED MY TROUBLE)
6-flashed another kernel: from leedroid 2.2.9 to my current BUZZ 1.3.8.3 1.2 GHZ MAX(NOT SOLVED)

Hi SERGI.3210
We meet again. Lol. I notice from my own experience that if we often reboot our phone, the GPS state will be restarted. And hence it will take some time for the GPS to work again.
For example, I have once flashed LeeDrOid' v2.2.2 in the past few months(first time), and I got a fix very quickly. It will be within 5-15 seconds? At most it will take is 30 seconds. However, after I reboot for whatever reason(I forgot, but I am not flashing anything else), and the GPS takes more time to get a fix again. The situation got worsen when I am in the car to get a fix. Took about 5-10 minutes??
But after some time, tolerating such slow fix(I know, its annoying) it suddenly get back to normal again. Which means I can get a fix very fast again.
Many has recommended the use of GPS Status app to clear A-GPS data and then download them back again. It works for them it seems, but in some to a large extent, it did not really work for me.
Maybe you can try Ulysee Gizmos app from the market? It has the capability to download A-GPS data as well. Recently I try using it and it seems to fix my problem once again. When was it? Last two days ago. Lol. Now it still work fine. Hopefully this continues.
I am still use GPS Status to get A-GPS data. Which means I am using both of them at the same time. Probably both apps does fires out some solutions? Haha. Me not sure but you can try.
Cheers mate. =)

I am fine here thanks. Getting ready for work now.
In your case, the problem is nothing to do with the navigation software but your GPS cannot get a fix. It may due to hardware failure.
If the situation persist, probably you should consider sending your device to HTC for a check. But make sure you turn back your phone into normal state first. (i.e. unroot your phone)
i pretty much have the same problem ...
5+ mins to lock my position ..

good night buddy!!!!
i have soo good noticesx100000000000
THAKE THIS:
gps status:found 8 or 9 sat.
fixed in 62 segs.
google maps:working perfectly!
finding gps at the moment
15 meters position error max. (better than my htc hero)
THE MEDICINE:
1--Though I feel sorry very much I had that flahs another CUSTOM ROM
2--Then I´VE flashed the recommended radio and was foun 3 or 4 sat...
3--and the most important: flash the RIL for this radio in this moment i was found 8 or 9 sat.!!!
the only one thing that i don´t like (nothing nothing) is the custom rom:
RCmix 6.1.0.1 (ported from desire s)
i´m COREDROID LOVER and RCMIX seems too simple but i preffer the good performance before beauty things...
Nevertheless when it does a few kilometres and tested well the GPS I will try with Leedroid (froyo) to see if I obtain the same results
Good for you buddy!
Usually if you got a fix pretty quick, it will have errors ranging to 30-50 meters(that is from what I obverse based on my device that locks within 5-15, max 30 seconds). Then it will adjust overtime. Well, still better than doesn't get a fix at all.
Hmm.. RCMis HD6.1.0.1? The Evolutionary Sense ROM? I have not try that yet.. plan to try after my exam. Currently concentrating on my exam for this month. Also quite satisfied with my current flashed LeeDrOid v2.2.3 ROM now. Lol.
Probably will be trying Miui too. I would prefer staying with Sense ROM as there is unlikely to have Premium Navigation in Non-sense ROM. If I would to try other GPS apps, I will have to pay for it. Premium Navigation is free for life for me in Malaysia + Singapore. Also finding addresses with it is easier, unlike other GPS app.(i.e. cannot search address). Probably due to the names of addresses here. Here uses Malay names and not English.

You could try Maniac103's build of CM7.2. (It's available from his GitHub, and a slightly newer version is posted here.)
CM7.2 is one of the fastest and most stable roms for the Defy, and Maniac103's version has an LTO data download feature that helps a lot with GPS. If you enable that feature (it's either in settings or in the Defy Parts app, I don't remember exactly where), the phone will download the satellite Long Term Orbit data whenever you're connected to wifi. This LTO data is valid for either 7 days or 30 days (depending on which option you choose), and it helps the GPS to get a fix very quickly, even when you're offline. That's one of the few features I really miss from CM7.

Yes, you should get a faster GPS fix if you connect to wifi every 30 days. I believe it only downloads when connected with wifi, not a cellular data connection.

Still no improvements, even with A-GPS and LTO data downloaded.
No fix in 5 minutes and just 2 sat found (as shown by GPS Status app). Same location with Galaxy S4 will result in a perfect fix in a couple of seconds.

The first GPS fix always takes a while, unless you have an active data connection for A-GPS, which uses cellular towers and/or wifi to help determine your location. (Also, the Galaxy S4 has much faster hardware, but I'd guess that if you reboot your Galaxy S4 in airplane mode, and then try to get a GPS fix, it will take more than a few seconds.)
Make sure that the phone is outdoors under open sky, and that it is stationary while the GPS looks for the first fix. After that, subsequent fixes should be much faster, at least until the next reboot.

Did you reboot the S4 in airplane mode, then try? That's pretty impressive if it can really get a cold-start fix that fast.
For me, a cold-start fix on the Defy usually takes a couple of minutes without a data connection, and sometimes it takes a minute or so before it even begins picking up satellites, so I guess that's normal for this hardware. On CM7.2 with the LTO data, though, it seemed a lot faster: a cold-start fix usually only took 30 seconds or so under a clear sky.

CM7 boots about as quickly as any rom for the Defy, so you may not be able to make much improvement there. You could try uninstalling/disabling system apps that run at startup; that might help a little. Overclocking from the bootmenu will also help.

You could use an app like this to see what applications and processes are running after a fresh reboot.
You can disable system apps using the android settings menu. I don't remember exactly how to do it on CM7, but on Android 4.4 you can manage apps under Settings > Apps > All. (You can also access the app manager by hitting the menu button > Manage apps.) Select the system app you want to disable, and click the "disable" button. I think the procedure was similar on CM7.
Alternatively, you can just delete a system app using a root-enabled file explorer like ES File Explorer. In ES File Explorer, go to Tools and enable the "Root Explorer" option, then navigate to the system/app directory of your phone's internal memory and delete whatever apks you don't want. (Be careful not to delete an app if you don't know what it does, or you might cause more problems. If you run into errors or your phone is unable to boot after deleting system apps, just re-flash the CM7 zip from recovery.)

Hi to all
i'm using a defy+ only as GPS navigation. I'm also not using any simcard, just GPS and WiFI.
Do you know any stripped down rom with nothing installed except wifi and gps? I'm looking for a rom with maximum battery savings and quicker boot time.
Everything else is unneded.

Hi, I'm also using my Defy+ for offline GPS (without sim, too)
Currently running Omnirom builds by Struq and Kayant (look in the "Omnirom for Defy" thread).
- Boot time is approx. 1'30, but no big deal for me (I'm not sure you will find custom roms with really faster boot times?)
- GPS hooking up takes some minutes (~maybe 3-5 mins) but I'm not even sure if I'm using a gps fix or not!
- battery usage : GPS & wifi are the most battery hungry components anyway
- I don't use Gapps , so that would qualify for "stripped down", only F-droid repository for apps, and the great OsmAnd for GPS nav :good:
Hello,
I have 2 defy "MB525 green lens" phones. On one of them (bought new) GPS works very well, 10-12 sattelittes at all time, first fix in cca 4 minutes withouth data connection. The only thing I've noticed is that the GPS really hates to "cold-start" when the phone is moving, i.e. inside a car. After fix, the signal strength ans sattelite count is OK.
On the second defy, GPS hardly sees a satellite. But the phone is from a hill climber, and I've got the phone with a smashed screen, the guy told me the phone falled some 30 m before hitting the ground... On opening it up I've noticed the PCB is chipped on one of the upper corners. New digitizer and everything else works....except for that GPS.
Perhaps the GPS chip is the most fragile component inside the phone... I don't know. But I think the software is not the cause here.
