[Q] Unroot without an RUU, with only an original Froyo OTA? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just to clear a doubt..
I know we can unroot using RUUs and by extracting the rom.zip from the RUU..My specific problem is that there is no leaked Official RUU for India with a new Boot/Software version. The only one on shipped-roms is 1.21.720.* which bricks SLCD Desires.. So in effect, if I unroot, I have no way to get back to my original configuration. I can install WWE RUUs but that means I get OTAs of WWE only, and not of India..
I need to unroot with the Froyo OTA..I believe it might be possible because the following post by Teppic74 mentions a method of unbricking SLCD bricked Desires using a file which seems to be an OTA. Since I am not rooted at present, I can get the OTA and create a backup of the OTA*.zip. I want to know if this OTA update method can definitely restore my ROM to stock, as much as an RUU can..Advantage..Goldcard wont be needed and I'd be getting back the ROM designed for India.
The following is the original post by Teppic74 on the thread [SLCD-BRICK] Fix is here
Method 1:
Download: http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_F...crut4wrv30.zip and rename it to update.zip then follow instructions given by teppic74Originally Posted by teppic74, reposted by lollylost100 (Remember to remove PB99IMG.zip from your GoldCard before copying update.zip)
1. Make sure the update.zip (NOT update.zip.zip!) file is on your goldcard and correctly named.
2. Take the battery out first to ensure the phone is powered off. Then hold vol down and press the power button, and hold vol down for about 5 seconds. That will get you into the bootloader even though you can't see it.
3. Press vol down once. This will select recovery.
4. Press the power button once. This will start the recovery. The phone will vibrate briefly.
5. Wait 20 seconds or so. Then press vol up and the power button and wait a few seconds. You'll now be in system recovery.
6. Press vol down once to select 'apply sdcard:update.zip'.
7. Press the power button once to start the recovery.
8. After a few seconds press the power button once again.

Is there any reason why this method wont work for me using the OTA I've got over the air from HTC India (and not the file linked by Teppic74)?

Yes this will work and has been documented before with other RUU that are AMOLED only. You jusst need to work out what's going on in Recovery as you can't see it

Another technique?

Thanks EddyOS..I'm planning to do it while seeing the Recovery..after fixing the Brick with a generic RUU with goldcard, followed by flashing the OTA as a zip..
After extracting Rom.zip from the old RUU it gives me the following files
Code:
07-05-2010 06:19 PM 100 android-info.txt
07-05-2010 05:57 PM 2,316,288 boot.img

07-05-2010 06:16 PM 233,021,184 system.img
07-05-2010 05:43 PM 2,112 userdata.img
Do you know which (or all?) of these files is the difference between branded and unbranded. Can we mix and match these files between different ROMs and flash with Fastboot assuming I have S-OFF?

You can't flash an OTA from one ROM onto another ROM - you'd have to brick it with the AMOLED Asia_India RUU and then do the rest 'blind', so to speak

Whoa.. Well then, I wont put another RUU on it. But still, bricking cant be an essential step, can it? I mean..If I'm running the original manufacturer's version though rooted, and then try the OTA on top of it, it should essentially unroot the phone, shouldnt it? Why would bricking be an essential part of it? Or, if the OTA isnt allowed, a goldcard should make it allowed? It it still wont work, an S-OFF with Alpharev should allow it?

You'll need to turn off signature checking in your Recovery and then flash the update.zip as you would any other OTA but yes it should go through

how do i extract PB99IMG.zip from RUU?

1. Start the RUU
2. When the first screen comes up, ignore it and click on Start>Run and type
%temp%
3. Find the newest folder you can
4. Copy the Rom.zip file out of it to your Desktop
5. Close all windows and exit RUU
6. Rename Rom.zip to PB99IMG.zip

Desire HD pd98diag.zip no image!fails to boot

I did a restart on my device, I started getting this :
loading pd98diag.zip no image! loading pd98diag.nbh no imade or wrong image etc...
I tried to take out the battery for 2 minutes and tried, still the same error.
Also copied update.zip ( modaco custom 2.3 rom) and updated it, still the same.
Any idea how to fix this?
What are you trying to do? Unless you have a PD98IMG.zip on your SDcard you will get that every time you boot into bootloader.
i have same problem with Desire HD.
I have Hboot and the phone when rebooted, it search pd98DIAG.ZIP
You can download it from somewhere and then put on the sdcard?
the device is NOT rooted
Me too i have the same problem. I downloaded the file PD98IMG.zip 260mb and i put it in the root of the memory card but nothing happens.
I holp some one could help us.

Heres the gingerbread rom and radio. If you guys want to try this one out. Just place in root of sd then power up into hboot with volume down and power button at same time. When asked to install volume up for yes let it do its thing then reboot when told to. Good luck guys you can then flash whatever rom you want after that. This is the stock rooted rom so your phone must be rooted to use.
Do not rename file, just place as is in root.

ok...I will send u a PM with a link to download a file...if you want me to help on line we can arrange to do it over teamviewer...if not just the usual way...rename to PD98IMG.zip and then boot in hboot...
If your phone is not roooted, you will NOT be able to flash ANY custom rom. The only option you have is to download the stock rooms(depending on where you get your phone, it could be carrier based) and flash it.
PD98IMG.zip is a file that many of us use for many other purpose, not necessary for roms only, it could be for radios/bootscreen yada yada... so what did you tried to do in the first place? what was the contect of your PD98IMG.zip ?
Bear in mind though, your data(internal) will be gone once u flashed a new rom.
I have a cell that is stationary in hboot. Should I try to get it back operational, usable. that's all

i renamed your file PD98IMG-GB2.ZIP ON PD998IMG.ZIP and i put on the sdcard.
The device checking the file and it blocked.
So in my opinion not good for my device

Check the CID Number and get back to me....

Becouse your phone is S-ON you must manualy flash boot.img. If i remember, you must copy from your ROM.zip "boot.img" to if you use SDK to "platform-tools" then go to fastboot, attach the USB and tipe "flash boot boot.img"
when i try it - result is "sending boot ....... FAILED(status malformed)"
Phone is in hboot mode

well as i understand you need to revert to device's stock condition
as far as i know only way to do it is by RUU or individually flashing every image. RUU is easily done but as you mentioned you get error messages try finding out what those error messages mean
common messages are
cant connect to device----ensure you are in fastboot usb mode
version problems----check weather you are using the right RUU (RUU is different for diferent regions) one RUU can have more than one versions so be sure which one you need
and you also need to lock you bootloader before running RUU
let me know if anything works
take a complete backup and make a goldcard just in case..you never know what may happen

i got same problem some days ago.cant port ruu and remove cwm.
so first of all you find your ruu from football's marvel collection or search on internet.if its in .zip file its very good extract it,you ll find recovery.img,boot.img and system.img
or if its in .exe file.first try installation wizard if its fail.again start installation wizard and then keep it on dont update bootloader just go to temp folder.(C:\Users\[LoginName]\AppData\Local\Temp\{82B23FCD-D5D0-45CA-A3A2-5350D3926551}) in this you will have see rom.zip file extract it.you ll find
recovery.img,boot.img and system.img then,
remove battery (power +volume down) to going in hboot then click on fastboot then plug your phone usb with computer open cmd and type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
you can see fastboot file in your extracted zip.by this way you manually port stock rom.i tried it and it successfully possible.but i use my original stock rom, ages when i used europe rom it failed.
and please be careful in type commands it ll brick your phone if you doing anything wrong..maybe it ll help you
and yes one thing read this thread carefully i recommand third method which i mentioned here.

I'm not an expert . But I think you can't flash stock Rom from custom recovery. You must do it with Adb commands or what they like to call flash in fastboot mode. And for getting official firmware updates from HTC you need to setup stock recovery. I dunno but you may have to lock boot loader and S-ON too. But not sure. As I said, I'm not an expert

You need a stock recovery to do OTA updates, won't work with custom recovery.
COLLECTION of Stock Backups See if you can find your stock recovery in that thread. Flash it and then you should be good to go.

No, if he's S-OFF there is no need to lock bootloader or to go S-ON.
He can just download the recovery stock .img file and flash it through command prompt. When he's done and the phone restarted he should get the OTA update.
Only issue he might run into, if he's rooted he'll lose root access and will have to reroot, it happened to me, but it's not a major issue though.

Instructions for? To flash back stock recovery?
1. Download the recovery from the link provided (Make sure it's the correct recovery, correct base number etc)
2. Place the downloaded recovery .img file in the adb folder where fastboot.exe is (by default it'll be in the platform-tools folder) - Though if you did a custom recovery you're probably already familiar with this.
3. Hold shift and right click anywhere in the white area of the folder > go to "open command prompt/window here"
4. Plug usb cable into device and connect up to computer (All familiar surely if you did custom recovery)
5. Commands:
a) adb devices ... to check if device is connected, should see serial number of device.
b) adb reboot bootloader
c) fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
d) fastboot reboot
Done.
Once the device restarted you should get the prompt for the OTA update(Depending on settings of course), you can then do OTA update.
To get mainversion number for the recovery you need. Just go to software information(in settings menu > about > software information) and check for OS version number or connect device to computer, reboot into bootloader adb reboot bootloader then type fastboot getvar version-main to see main version for device.

Actually, I forgot that. I need to lock boot loader if I'm S-ON but don't need if S-Off

Converted to GPE, I messed up now want to start from scratch.

So I converted my HTC m8 to a GPE (rooted) Downloaded from graffixnyc dot com/m8.php
Phone was working fine until I accidentally updated via OTA and went into a bootloop.
I finally manage to reflash TWRP and do a factory restore however it goes into bootloop anyway,
I'm willing to start from scratch, however I don't know how to.
What I need to do in order to flash this 5.1 Stock Non-Rooted GPE RUU? using TWRP. Which are the steps? (I don't have an SD card) I'm scared I will brick my phone, I read something about wipe the data using TWRP, but I'm not sure.

The easiest way is:
Get an SD card.
Copy the non-rooted GPE RUU onto the SD card and rename it the required zip file name.
Change the CID to the correct google GPE one.
For non-SD card follow the steps here:

To get the rom zip just run the ruu.exe file. When the box with a picture of a phone pops up, click start on pc, type in run and click on run then in that box that pops up, type in %temp% and click ok. Another window pops up then just scroll down to the most recent folder and rom.zip will be in there, if not it will be in the next folder.
Step one says:
Rename the RUU zip file 0p6bimg.zip

Yes, I know.
But you are telling him to rename an RUU to 0P6BIMG.zip.
You can't rename an exe file to a zip file. You need to start with a zip file, and rename that.
That being said, the RUU zip file is available in the link you provided. If he downloads and renames that, everything should work out well.
EXCEPT!!! Where he said in the OP that he didn't have an SD card. So there is that.

Okay.
Download the 5.1 RUU.zip from here onto your PC.
Rename it to ROM.zip and place it into your fastboot folder.
Hook up your phone and get into ADB/fastboot.
fastboot devices to make sure you are connected. You should see your serial number. If you don't know what it is, it doesn't matter. A bunch of letters and numbers means you are connected.
fastboot oem rebootRUU A black screen with the HTC logo should come up. This is RUU mode.
fastboot flash zip ROM.zip
If you get a fail, that's the hboot updating.
Type fastboot flash zip ROM.zip again without disconnecting.
After a successful flash fastboot reboot and you are done.
Disconnect your phone and enjoy Android 5.1

Yea, I re-read from the beginning and see that I misunderstood. Sorry.

How to edit RUU?

People in the CM13/14.1 threads have talked about editing the US Unlocked RUU and removing the radio, cradio, and recovery files in order to be able to flash on Verizon and Sprint devices. However, every time I do this I get errors while attempting to flash the edited RUU. Can someone please provide a guide on how to succesfully edit an RUU?
AFAIK you cannot edit an RUU because it is signed by HTC.
You can however remove pieces from the firmware, such the pieces you mentioned, but in order to be able to flash modified firmware you need to be s-off.

I am S-OFF and it's still throwing errors. I have unzipped an RUU, removed the cradio, radio, and recovery files from the folder, an then rezipped it and it will not flash. It gets stuck on "ui_updating"

You cannot flash normal zip file from recovery, it has to be a flashable zip, do a quick Google Search on "how to make a flashable zip" follow the steps and then you can use it.

...that's not even close to what I'm talking about. I am wanting to edit the 2.x US Unlocked RUU (firmware package) which is installed through download mode, not a flashable zip.

they are talking about firmware not RUU.
RUU = system (ROM) + firmware
no need for ROM..
So does no one have an answer?

You don't need to flash a RUU. You just need to modify the firmware zip. Flash firmware, flash new recovery, wipe data partion, not factory reset. Flash CM. Advanced calling will probably not work though.
