The touch pro 2 USB socket broke... (the 11 pin one)
and it is out of warranty.
They are demanding $300 to get it fixed.
Does anyone know of some other way I can get this phone fixed at a much cheaper price?!? Please!!
How exactly did it break? Did the whole socket come unsoldered or did the little tab thing just break off? The tab broke off on my old Mogul & I just superglued it back in. VERY carefully. It worked just fine afterward, the tab is just there to support the pins.
If the whole socket broke off, all I could suggest is finding a friend who's really good at taking stuff apart & soldering. I would do it(used to do micro-soldering for Hitachi) but I live in OK.
$300.00...?!?! That's insane...when the same happened to my mda, I purchased a battery charger from cellphoneshop.net, that charged the battery without the phone...I searched their site and was unable to locate one for the tp2
I don't know how big bellevue, wa is, or if its close to a larger metropolitan area. If so, I would look on craigslist and search for "cell phone repair". I had my mda screen repaired by a company I found on there, pretty cheap....
Alright, thanks guys... but is there like a place where I can mail-it in to get the phone repaired? Craigslist isn't really helping. The phone charges, but I can't connect it to the computer via USB or use any headphones. Also, there are other MAJOR problems caused by this broken socket (it won't boot unless I have a USB adapter plugged in, and that it remains in headphones mode). The black clip came off, but it's kinda impossible to glue it back in.

it isnt here right now but try calling them and see if you can get a new port, if the port isnt soldered to the board.
Two point five questions here I guess but I've tried everything and I don't know what else to do. Rooted phone, got it back in july not long after the launch. For the last week or two, maybe more, I was using MIUI with tiamat 0.7. Most recent version of both. For a while Car Home kept popping up always and being super freaking annoying. Eventually I had to freeze it with Titanium backup.
Another very bothering thing is that the audio output for media is incredibly loud. Like if I plug in some five dollar headphones and keep media on lowest, I can hear it about ten feet from the buds. Not even cupping to bounce sound, just sitting on a surface. I don't know what caused this but it may have been fault, I'm not sure if doing what I did, did this; I had a pair of broken headphones so I whittled and scraped them down just to the plain bare jack and use it as a soundkiller while I'm at work. I've done this before with no problem but this time I scraped down so some metal is exposed while the jack is in and I'm sure I touched it when I removed it. I did this for a few days and suspected it might be the issue causing the sound so I stopped.
I also wiped very thoroughly the phone and SD card and went to the latest nightly of CM7. Same issues, including car home so I'm not sure what the hell is wrong with that damn app. Also now my phone is ALWAYS rotating anything even when I tell it not to and keeps making itself silent as far as ringing and notes go. What can I do?
Tl;DR: Car home always popping up, Media sound is incredibly loud, CM7 is ALWAYS rotating.
I realized this was due to a loose connector in the headphone or usb port and the phone always thinks it is in a car docked or does whenever this is loose. I found an app called NoDock in the market, it requires root but it works on the OS level disabling the feature all the time when I want to meaning I can still use it. There is a trial that claims to work for 7 days however I've been using it for the day after I posted this until now. Another person posted in the market a bad review because his trial lasted only 30 minutes so it is a formula or something. Normally it is 3 USD so it isn't too bad.
The choices I had were using this with this app or getting a replacement through sprint officially as a damaged hardware. The replacement would be a brand new model that couldn't be rooted as of yet so I figured I'll deal with this. The evo is over a year old now and I can't be sure people will keep trying to do new things to root it so I'll keep my beloved.
I'm posting this so in case someone has the same issue and searches 3 years from now and sees this they will know what i did.
Car home is caused by pins getting crossed within the USB jack. Check for a few things:
1. Does it happen only when the phone is plugged in?
2. Is there any debris or the like inside of the USB jack that is crossing the pins?
3. Does the same thing happen when you plug another USB cable into it?
Mine did the same thing and it turned out to that my charger was screwed up and making the phone think that it was docked. So I bought a samsung charger off of Ebay for like $3 and it's worked flawlessly ever since. If there is junk inside of the phone's jack get a toothpick, or something similar, to clean it out and see if that helps. If the jack is clean and the phone still launches car home while NOT plugged in then your USB jack may be screwed up.
Greetings,
My unlocked, rooted, and JB flashed GNEX suddenly will not be detected on any machine I connect it to. XP, vista, W7. It charges fine, and detects as charging when connected to a PC. Machine's will not detect it as even connected. No errors.
I recently had two developments to my device that leave me uncertain as to what might be the cause of this issue:
1. Device went for a short swim. Dried out in rice, but not working properly. Disassembled and bathed in alcohol, then dried again, and it seemed to be revived, with the exception of an extremely short wifi range, both when connecting to an AP, or running as a hotspot.
2. Before the swim, I had recently flashed the Ascent VZ JB rom. I can't recall if I attempted to connect to a PC after the flash.
I have insurance, but would prefer not to use it, if possible.
I have tried fastboot mode, debug on and off with no luck. I should think that on a totally foreign machine, that some sort of detection and driver installation should be intiated, but nothing.
Any ideas of more testing I can do, before writing off the unit and replacing it?
Gary
I've been having issues like this with mine too. Running Xenon HD. USB port seems to be hit or miss the last couple weeks. I'm also contemplating a warranty replacement.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856164 try that. I had a detection problem. Might not be related but you never know

If you haven't already tried this: open the device manager, then connect the phone. Monitor the device manager for newly detected devices. If the PC doesn't detect anything being connected, I doubt there's much you can do.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input.
Unfortunately, nothing is detected on any machine. Device manager is empty. Machines that used to detect it don't, and new machines don't either. I am in I.T.,...and have way to many PCs for my own good. Oh yes...not detected in Ubuntu either.
I disassembled my phone again today, and rechecked the wireless antenna, and the USB port, but still no luck. I think I may just have to pony up the $100 and use my insurance.
Thanks again,
Gary

This might be worth consideration, too:

Thanks strumcat, I found that link this morning. Great minds think alike! I am sourcing the part right now. I have disassembled my phone about 15 times since its bath.

Check and see if the device can be seen by adb, assuming you have the Android SDK and adb drivers set up.
If it's not detected, as stated above, there may not be a whole lot you can do.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the info. No luck with ADB.
If I purchase the micro USB board, I am out $40, with no guarantee it will resolve the issue. Then I still have the wifi range issue that may or may not be resolved by replacing another module for about $40.
Since that I will be most likely out $80 to possibly get it back to perfect, I think I am going to just shell out the $100 and get a replacement. Hopefully, it will be new one, not a refurb.

Sometimes when I have USB debugging enabled, my PC does not detect my phone. I have to disable USB debugging before connecting my phone, it detects it and then enable USB Debugging while the phone is connected. That usually works for me.

It will be a refurbished one. Why don't you just drop carrier insurance and pull a "stand alone" policy with whoever does your auto/home/renters insurance? Costs next to nothing really. Cheaper than carrier. Added bonus...? They send you a check. For actual replacement costs. After a year of premiums and the 150 deduct thru carrier its pretty much $300 for a repaired phone. You paid less for a new one. Yearly, the stand alone is half to 3/4 the price of carrier. Deduct varies, but its less also. And its actual price to get new phone. If comparable one is 800..check for 800. Ask your insurance guy about it. If no stand alone, get renters insurance for like 6$ a month. Still cheaper.
Tried Everything, Found the solution. (I will post this elsewhere, too)
So, I have spent two days with this problem. I've searched the entire godamn internet... only to find a surprising solution.
Regardless of what I had tried, my computer refused to detect my GNex. Toggled MTP, etc, Retoggled USB debugging, all that.
No matter what I would do, the PC would classify it an 'unknown device' !!!
What I had tried:
-Deleting all drivers, tried different driver sources (ex . Samsung's driver instead of Google's SDK, and even tried universal ADB drivers)
- Ensuring 'force fast charge' was disabled in both my kernel settings. (even disabled it in terminal emulator)
- Factory reset device (and quickly restored it back to the way it was, as this was not the problem)
-Three different PC's (Two Windows 7 PC's and 1 Ubuntu)
-Deleting all USB drivers on my computers and then attempting to connect via MTP or ADB, nothing.
-Even stepped through some drivers guides, including Nexus root toolkit (Even tried all 4 solutions, out of frustration).
My friend then suggested that maybe my USB internal port was dirty. I looked at it under a magnifying glass and to me, honestly it looked clean. I could clearly see the terminals,. Again, out of frustration, I tried this as a shot in the dark ------ I took a dry, new clean artists' brush and I brushed it out.
VOILA. I plug it in, and it installs the ADB interface first shot.
I really wasn't expecting this. I guess it should be expected , I carry this phone around in my pocket and it goes through hell, but one would expect charging problems as well. I guess a piece of pocket crud just so perfectly covered up the Data +/- in the middle of my USB port.
Try this, my friends. Having a non-functional USB port on a phone that screams "root me" is the most frustrating thing.

Wow thanks a lot man :good:
save my time from usb connecting problem :victory:
eventhough i'm using my own way: blown from the mouth
Thanks!!!!! Good!!
thanks! that helped a lot
It looks like I finally got burned buying a phone from kijiji. I'll save you the gory details. It seemed fine when I met the guy but once I got it home there were issues.
My computer won't recognize the phone. When I plug it in, nothing. No errors, just nothing. It doesn't show up in Device Manager. This is my fourth Gnex and I have the Android SDK installed and the Google drivers. I reinstalled them just in case but no luck. Upon further playing with the phone there are other issues. When I plug in headphones, the speaker stays on and there is no sound in the headphones. The volume up rocker doesn't work and the 2 batteries I've tried drain like crazy.
So is it a lost cause? Unfortunately, I'm in Canada and can't get a cheap one from the Play Store and now I'm a little gun shy about buying used. On the bright side, I'm back using my Nexus One.
Any help, ideas, sympathy would be appreciated. Thanks!
As long as it has a good working screen it's probably repairable. Sometimes the USB port pins get bent and don't connect, or short to ground. You can try bending them back into place, or just replace the whole USB port if necessary. Not that big a deal. The audio out jack might also have a loose or broken connection. The battery drain is the most troublesome. I would just take it apart and reseat all the connectors and check for bent or broken ports, which can be replaced.
Check out ifixit.com for disassembly guide.
Some how (isn't that what they all say) got water in my GNex USB Port which caused the port to fry once charger was plugged in. Phone still fully functions as normal, just can't charge it. After pricing out a few options, I've decided to replace the part myself. Should everything go well, this should save me at least $35.
Just wondering if anyone else here as had to do this, would love to hear how it went for you. I'm currently waiting for the part to be shipped to me.
There's been quite a few people (not me so far) who've had to change their usb ports because they failed (stopped charging). There's several threads on how to do it, I've not bookmarked them but search would probably turn them up.
Should be pretty simple if the charging port is on a daughterboard and not on the main PCB. It's pretty easy to remove the lcd/digitizer + mainboard from the housing, and if it's just a daughterboard you should be able to disconnect the old part from the connector and attach the new one.
Thanks for the replies! ifixit.com actually has a detailed step by step, just wanted to see if anyone here ran into any issues while doing it or not.

Its fairly easy to replace the USB board if done with care and proper tools. A word of advice, when you remove the back cover ( the step after removing screws) pay attention to not drop the rubber buttons..... they are hard to find once they hit the floor . Anything than that, just do it with love and you will do fine
Success! Time to put the Aria back in the closet!
I take that back, the microphone (which is part of the usb port board) on the new board does not work. Attempted to make a phone call and they could not hear me. Used a voice recording app and got nothing. Looks like I'll be getting another replacement.
I've got to hand it to Wholesale Gadget Parts, Inc out of Oklahoma. That's saying a lot coming from a Texan, we usually aren't too fond of Oklahoma. As stated the other day, the replacement board I got had a faulty microphone. Called WGP, no questions asked shipped me a new one and got it within 48 hours. My GNex is now back to fully functioning order!
