What speeds are typical for 3g? Are there any utilities at the market for testing connectivity? TIA

www.mobilespeedtest.com

go to these sites though the phone browser and run the tests, should give you some accurate data.
I did this, show like .38 Mbps down, .79 up.
I also had a friend do from there phone most she got was .52 Mbps down and .86 Mbps up.
Both phones are 3g and network says evdo rev a.

You can also try the speedtest app in the market, it might give you better results then the browser one.
Make sure in the app that you select the server that is closest to you for the most accurate response.
Also while you are traveling around your town(s) -- School, Work, Home, Friends, etc..
Test out the app in each of those locations (it allows you to save the results).
Then compare them and you can get an accurate reading of the 3G speeds for your provider in those areas.
Your signal strength definitely matters. Good signal I get a little over 2 down, 0.8 up. Not so good signal is more like 0.6 down, 0.3 down. These numbers are from the speedtest app.

I usually see about -84 for signal, but guess that's not quite good enough!

Apparently the towers in my area are only fed by a T1 so says company supplying connection to tower, not sure if that's typical?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I get like 1 down on a really good day
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
So far only 1.3 down and 1.0 up, hey least its not dial up speeds!

How do you know if you are getting HSPA+ on your g2?
Download speedtest.net. after you run the test go to results and click on one of them. Scroll down to network and if you are on 3g or 2g it will say cell. If you are connected to hspa+ it will display utms. Also you can generally tell by the speeds you get from running the test.

Download netswidget. It will tell u edge, umts (3g) or hspa+ (4g)

Speedtest.net is the #1 network test on the market, as approved by cnet, phonedog, mobileburn etc... so don't go with any others or else you risk corrupted results

Netswidget from market should display HSDPS When connected to "4G"

What are you talking about spam? Unless you have been living under a rock everyone knows these cell phone review sites. So calm down lol your making yourself look like an idiot

Make sure you choose a close server too, don't choose one that's 500 miles away.
I got Mobile Signal Widget from Android Marker. It's really nice. Will show a H, 3G, E, G, etc depending on what you're connected to.
Same here really good tool. It's helping me in seeing what freaky stuff my phone is doing with data and signal strength. I think I'm in a poor spot and I'm going to try to spend some time in another spot where the coverage is known better and see if I get the same issues.
Settings/about phone/status/mobile network type
It tells you if your connected to gprs, umts, or hspa.

Everyone knows they're absolute crap, you dirty spammer.
man I haven't had the joy of using hspa+ yet
pierrekid is right. however, he shoulda thrown in that it was also sideways endorsed by cyanogen (i think, it was a long time ago when he suggested only using speedtest cause other apps dont show real results)

Every Single one of mine says cell... I'm in Salt Lake City Utah, which it says is one of the finished cities. WTF, do I call T-Mobile?
Lol first off krashunist, you also are making yourself look like an idiot. It obvious I'm not spamming. Second I would try and drive around a bit to differnt locations in your area just to confirm that it not your phones that's faulty but the actual network. If you see that your connecting to 4g is different areas just gotta wait till they refine and improve the network to work in your specific area. Believe I'm going through the same exact thing here in miami.

I've had my g2 for about 4 months now and I'm quite happy with it. Rooted with perm s-off, running about 4 different roms, blahblahblah. I have the full data plan for my phone, and I've used it passed the data cap through all my billing cycles so far.
However, I live in hawaii. The data here is unbearably slow. Using speedtest, I see people with scores of 4mb down and 1mb up.
I average ALMOST 0.3mb down 0.9mb up. that's with 3g on, if you couldn't guess.
I've already tried flashing different radios for my phone, but it only minamally increases my data speed for a huge increase in battery consumption.
Am I stuck here, to wander a 2g world with my almost-but-not-really-4g phone? Help me out if you'd care to lend a hand, I'm kind of sick of seeing the buffer icon permanently on youtube.
Toodles.

The phone is 4g. That doesn't mean your area has it though. Have you bothered to call you service provider to make sure you are connected to the proper tower? I had data speeds like yours but found my phone was trying to connect to a tower in a completely different city.

There's kind of no tower in, around, or relatively close to hawaii. The closest tower is in L.A I believe, which is the one I'm connected to. So no matter where I go on the island, the signal stays around there.

You're not getting 2G speeds. 2G speeds is edge which is at BEST and THEORETICALLY a little under 250 kbps. You're doing decent for 3G. If it was a 4G connection you'd see "H" instead of "3G".

That doesn't seem possible. there has to be some sort of cell towers on one of the islands there. Carriers use each others towers at times to. I know the internet out there can get screwy at times so I understand your frustrations...write your local congress person lol

You're right, the OP can't possibly be correct about there being no cell towers in Hawaii. The max range of a GSM tower is about 22 miles in the best of conditions, and almost always much less. Towers have to be placed as close as 1/2 mile apart in some terrain or urban conditions. 1 to 2 miles apart is average in many conditions.

Even if you're rooted, that symbol will not show unless you've got a theme or rom that is set to show HSPA+ in the status bar.
Download mobile signal widget, it will tell you whether or not you are actually on HSPA+.

Well sprint claims 3g speed to be between 600 and 1400kbps. But technically, 3g speeds SHOULD average around 2mb/s. However sprint's network is crap right now, I cant get above 100kbps ever.
Thanks!

Just updated OTA to ek02 and am experiencing slower 3g speeds... with and without the tweak. Anyone else noticing this or is it just me?

For me with update, 3g is same, but 4g is almost double.

Sprint's 3G is stupid slow. It's completely unusable around here. For example, the Android Market. Most things say they are "starting to download" then they never do.
I did a speed test and my ping was like 900~1100+ with a download speed of 7~13kbps and an upload speed of 50~100kbps or so.
Seriously, 7~13kbps download?
The only reason I put up with this crap is I'm almost NEVER away from wireless. I work in the technologies field with full gig-network access on almost all the campuses I'm at threw out the day and 105mbit at home.

Wow, that is really slow. I don't have it that bad lol. But with that ping and those speeds, it seems like something is uploading constantly. That's the only time I've ever seen speed tests like that for me, while i was uploading songs to Google music. That's interesting.
As for the speed test tho, i feel there is an issue with the actually test and specifically our 3g. The reason i say this is because the speed test will give me a result of 40-50kB/s, but then i will download a torrent at like 150kB/s.... all in the same area. Very weird.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Sprints download speed for me is around .12kbs to .45kbs in good reception areas... in the same areas ATT gets 3.5mbs and Verizon is very stable with good reception and stable internet that is around 1.5 mbs... so ATT is wicked fast 3g but the reception and internet are both hit and miss as far as coverage goes. Where as Verizon may not be the fastest internet, they are well within my personal tolerance and needs... and their coverage surpasses ATT by a long haul in my area... notice i haven't mentioned sprint? That's because my download speeds on average are (like previously stated) between 10kbs and 50kbs at most! 50kbs is the fastest I've ever gotten with the speestest.net app! Don't even get me started on call reception.... I've honestly had more dropped calls in a month and a half then I've had with every other company combined throughout my life. End rant

Im suffering a very low 4G speed for 4 days. Its close to zero. Only 2G is usable, but slow.

I thought it was just my ROM, but switching from WiFi to 3G/4G takes forever. took about 20 minutes once just to get a decent connection.
maybe it has something to do with the LTE coming and them optimizing towers, to whatever they do.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda app-developers app
I thought it was only me but they must be doing something over there with the tmobile towers i hope it is for the new Lte 4g
The slow speed issue only occurs within my neighbor hood, around 2 mile square. When I drove away, it was back to normal. It never happened before! Sometimes, the speed is very inconsistant, fast for awhile, then no connection!
