Extremely slow internet on any AOSP ROM? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I'm running miui, and ever since I flashed it both my WiFi and mobile network speeds are horrible. It only loads a few few kb/s, while stock ROM and my computer have excellent speeds, same result when I was at a friends house.
However network speeds are great at my schools public network; they've blocked loads of ports and protocols which means stuff like the Android Market won't work. This gives me the feeling that my traffic is being tunneled, but that the port is blocked at school so it reverts to non-tunneled traffic.
However I'm not sure of this because for example my external ip is the same as my computers, and sites like what's my ip doesn't detect any proxy.
Both VPN and proxy aredisabled in the menus.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: I've now noticed that the same problem occurs when running OpenDesire.. Maybe it's related to AOSP ROMs?
EDIT2: Just remembered, CyanogenMod used to work fine.. I'll try flashing it once again.

Try a non-MIUI ROM, or try stock

As I said in my first post, stock ROM doesn't have the problem. Cyanogenmod works fine too

Could my current radio affect this? Unfortunately I can't remember what I'm currently using..

I tried the latest radio, 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, but no difference.. Watching YouTube videos does not work because it's soo slow, downloading Angry Birds would take 25 minutes, downloading a 100kb pdf file with bus timetables took a minute and so on.. ._.

bump.
Any info you want?

Are you still getting 3g or is it only 1x data?

It does show the 3G icon, so yes, 3G,

Same problems when running OpenDesire! Maybe it's an AOSP ROM problem occurring just for me?
EDIT: Just remembered that CyanogenMod used to run fine, I'll try flashing it and see if the same problems occur again.

Check your build.prop data/net settings and compare with one from a ROM that works well for you. Try and make the WiFi scan interval option 60s or above (not below).

I set it to 60, pushed in recovery, no change. Didn't notice any differences among wifi and data.

Problem solved! I solved it by updating my routers firmware(Apple airport extreme)

[Q] Wireless tether issue

I have a droid incredible with sky raider sense 3.3.2, my issue with wireless tether has persisted through several different roms and the stock rom.
When I launch wireless tether (with or without security) I am able to connect from my mac or pc and surf the web at very slow speeds. The phone is able load web pages faster in the same location then with wifi tether. On top of the slow speeds I am not able to browse the web for more then 15 minutes without losing internet access via wifi, but still connected to the phone. During that time the phone can still surf the web.
The only temporary way to fix this is to reinstall all binaries and configs then restart the phone. When I use the pdanet trail I have, everything is a dream via usb.
My current radio is 2.15.00.07.28, this issue has also been with me for the past 2 radio updates I have done. I have tried turning wifi on and off with no success, disabling all my apps but wifi and superuser.
I'm having the EXACT same issue and have been searching for the past couple hours to try and fix it. Currently on Redemptive rEVOlution 2.1 w/ stock 2.6.32.17 Kernel. Driving me crazy!! .4kb download & .1kb upload speeds... Have removed the .dun as instructed in EPST's settings and am using latest wireless tether (2.05.-pre13).
Has everyone that has come across this thread been able to use wireless tether with no issues? Should it be as simple as having root, froyo & downloading wireless tether? Or changing EPST settings to take out "dun."... Bueller?
Are you using the stock 3g hotspot app or did you download a rooted app?

Same issue here too. I have 2 inc's, both rooted - one stock, one running Myn's release 3 w/Ziggy kernel. Both have the same problem. Wifi will actually stay up for a while and the connected to my laptop. Then, wifi will actually drop and not be detected by wifi-analyzer while on the serving inc tether willstill show active.
Running Wifi-tether pre13 but this is an issue whether running wifi-tether or 3g hotspot.
Possibly an earlier version of wifi-tether would work? Can someone who is not experiencing this issue post the versions of their wifi related apps?

Having same problem with brothers phone. I'm never around when it drops but this is exactly what he describes too. I just put pre 13 and changed to channel 1 haven't had him complain yet but we will see
Mine however with same setup works fine... totally confused

I just updated to pre13 and have tried several different channels with no luck. I noticed earlier that when I have been on it for a while it will slowly stop loading sites.
By this I mean that Engadget could continue to refresh while hulu or xda will not load. Eventually Engadget will stop loading.

I my stock dinc back to wifi tether 2.0.5-pre7 this morning and so far so good... will do some more testing tonight and report back later with an edit.
edit: Apparently pre7 release has an issue with channel selection, no matter what you select you end up on 6 (with all of the other default users out there), running pre8 now.
When you tether, does it say 1x at the top?
tether working fine
This is really one of the main reasons I rooted-
stock 2.2
wireless tether 2.0.2
I seem to surf without interuption endlessly.
speed test on average is about.5Mbps up and down
It does it at 3g and 1x

I get the same issue while running both sky-raider and now on virtuous. I believe it prob has to do with the 2.15 radio cuz I never had this issues with 2.05 or stock 2.1 android
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Same here...after surfing a while on the laptop it will quit loading pages.
The only way I can get around it is to disable the "wireless network connection"
then re-enable and it will work for another 10 minutes or so before having
to repeat the same action.
I have never been able to get wifi tether to work. I tried numerous versions of wifi tether, tried changing WEP, WPA, Open, channels, etc. I could connect the computer to the phone, but could never get internet access.
I finally gave up and just use 3g Hotspot, which works perfect.
I never had the 2.05 radio, so I don't know if it was introduced in 2.15
Man am I glad I am not the only one with the issue.

Okay so now we have established that there is a wifi tethering issue. Any dev wanna help us out on solving this or anyone with any ideas?

I have the same issue... any help is greatly appreciated!
I'm currently using stock 2.2 w/Nov update, radio 2.15.00.07.28 & 2.05-pre13 but am having no problem keeping two laptops connected. Rather my issue is one mentioned a few posts up, the speed is sadly lacing compared to what others have posted elsewhere on the site.
Would post screens but have to be more active and post a few more.

[Q] IceColdSandwich 4.0.3 wifi drops

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, thanks for all the information and nice tutorials.
I rooted my phone from the default and latest HTC sence version to the Ice Cold Sandwich 3.0.0.
I really like the new version, however I notice some wifi drops as I had before a specific HTC update.
Does anybody know a solution for this problem? I can't post in the developer forum due too not enough posts...
Thanks in advance.
kr
The ROM is a port so plenty of things are bound not to work at times. It's a common issue and is easily solved by flashing a more stable ROM.
you could try WiFix Manager from the marked see if that helps you..
i think most of the icecream builds have many bugs yet..
and proberly many with the same problem as you
so if you used the search function under the rom you use
you would proberly see many with the same problem and fix to it
The wifi doesn't "drop", it's just that ICS has different levels of measurement than HTC, so 2 bars on sense may be 1 bar on ICS
Sent from my asus_laptop using xda premium
Thanks, but i'm really noticing drops and even dead spots like i experienced before.
The HTC update than solved this for me.
When I for example hold my hand fixed above my phone the wifi signal will drop very fast and after some time the connection is even lost.
As I said I also had this problem before with the HTC software, however there has been one update regarding wifi problems and this solved this issue for me.
I don't know whether there is a possibility to see what has been solved in this update and to implement it somehow.
kind regards
That's because you're blocking the antena inside which makes the signal poor. Try not to cover the plastic in the back of the phone all the way.

There's an option "best wifi...." Something in advance wifi menu in sense ROMs, that solves dropping wifi connection.

That's a Sense only option. AOSP doesn't have that but has a different set of setups which can enable better wifi performance. There is also an application called WiFix which fixes some known issues about wifi.
You can find it here:

[Q] Wifi Problem

Guys, my wifi is acting really really weird lately.
I flashed aokp m4 with franco r98, and it works perfectly with my home wifi. But at school, it would not connect even though in wifi settings the phone can see the wifi and its full bars. I stood next to a friend with a gnex unrooted and stock Rogers rom, and he has full bars. While on my phone, it just says that the network is saved. I have been able to access the wifi before back when I had stock. So I decided to try my cwm backup of my stock rooted and still no use. wont connect.
Last try i made was to reflash google 4.0.2 stock image and lock bootloader, and try it with the factory rom. NOPE, no help at all..
Right now, Im back home on my wifi, full bars, and no problems watsoever running m2 with r98 again. but still...why???!!!
Is it hardware issue? How can I test and check!!! i really need this solved...as wifi is like a necessity in life these days LOL
Also, I tried foxhound before i went to stock, and still wont connect to school wifi.
One more thing, there is like one spot to two in school that i would get 1 tiny dot of wifi, whereas every other phone around me including the ipods have full bars...SOooo, any fixes?
anyone help ?

Before you flashed your custom rom did it work at school?
If it works at home, then it probably isn't a hardware issue... maybe check your wifi settings and try putting the frequency at 2.5 Ghz instead of auto? Or try to put it at 5.0 Ghz?
Maybe there are some Wi-Fi apps you can try searching for in the market that gives you more information?
You sure you're typing the correct password?

I'd say just download some random one's for now. See if the signal that it's reporting is different. Maybe long press the network name and select "forget", then try again?
Are you not getting enough bars? Or can you just can't connect to the AP?

[Q] CyanogenMod 10: Wifi Problem?

Hey There,
I've just installed this fine ROM today, and it seems great,
but for some reason, the wifi reception is BAD now.
It works fine if I seat near my router, but if I move 3 meters away
it looses the connection ... and says the reception is POOR.
Any1 else has this problem?
Which version of CM10 did you flash, if it's anything older than beta 1 try flashing Beta 1 ? if you still have problems after Beta1
Try flashing a different kernel and see if that resolves your problem. (if i can spare you some time, try faux123's kernel)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647993
And then if you still have problems.
Try running the Viper ROM 2.6.0 with the Butter hacks runs very smooth.

Thanks for the quick replay
I flashed the "[08-09] [ROM] CyanogenMod 10 - Endeavor Unleashed" rom.
I don't think this is the same cm10 everyone's using.
and I don't really understand, doesn't the Kernal comes with the rom?
Can I change it without changing a rom ?

But on the stock rom WIFI was ok.
Update: Ok I did the "Squeeze" test. Wifi is great whn I squeeze
So it is a hardware problem?? How it only started after I put CM10?
Have you reinstalled the stock rom since you have the problem?
I don't know if CM10 is the cause, or it's a coincidence..
there's an UNOFFICIAL release at the moment which may fix some issues, though I've not noticed anything and I've had every release since A10 installed, so it could be a hardware issue.
I'm on the newest build of cm10 and my WiFi network is fine. I can from leedroid and so far just the same. I do have a tiny bit of earphone cable between my back and hard case which gives me my full bar due to the hardware fault.
Couldnt be bothered sending it back. So this works. Bit did recorded it with HTC so they know I have the fault.

But if you use Cm10 without that little earphone cable, the wifi won't work good?
BTW, what does htc support ask to fix the problem? Do they care you rooted and unlocked the device?
The cable is about 3mm in lengh and as i have a hard case, its enough to compress the connection inside the phone where the fault is.
Htc would of course fix it, but whats the point if the phone is working and its not noticeable.
I would have had to relock bootloader and go back on stock rom.

Do you think HTC will be "understanding" and fix the wifi issue even with a custom rom?
(they'll know anyway that I opened bootloader)
Try flash the Rom with the stock kernel, that will surely solve the WiFi problem.

Did you not do a backup before installing custom rom. Im positive that even if you relock the bootloader they can see that if they went in to recovery. But unlikely. So if you flash stock rom and re lock bootloader, remove root you should be fine

Hi, try using tbaldens CM10. It can be found under HTC ONE X ORIGINAL ANDROID DEVELOPMENT. I found this to be the best CM10
I have been chasing this problem ever since installing CM10 on my Evo 4g LTE. I was getting 4 times the wifi distance on the stock rom. I go about 30 ft. outside the office and wifi drops. Also, what is the most annoying... I stream over our LAN, and when the screen is off, it turns wifi off after a few minutes. (and yes, the check box is checked to keep wifi alive). I've also tried all of the wifi fix apps and none work. If I leave the screen on and stream........ it is good anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour, then it will just stop. This kills my battery of course. The problem 1st occured when I first bought my OEM 4g lte, but there was an option in the advanced menu "best wifi performance", after checking that, it worked great, then I switched to CM10 and I now have the wifi issue, and there is no option for "best wifi performance". I've tried a couple other jellybean roms and they have the issue as well. This is driving me nuts. I hope someone finds a solution. I don't think the average person would find this as a problem, but when I stream over the net and move all about the shop, it is unacceptable.
I faced the same issue but not on any other ROM. It was specifically with Cyanogenmod 10. I was upset because it gave me the best results but the wifi result was really poor.
However, since I work with wireless networks often, I decided to explore Cyanogenmod's wifi settings. I noticed that if you go in the Advanced Wifi functions (which you can find in the Wifi options menu) you will notice that there is an option called "Wi-Fi Region Code".
Apparently, this option allows you to select the frequency bands your device can operate and is subject to the different world regions. It is quite possible that your Access Point follows the regulatory body of your country and you should know which frequency bands they allow the AP to operate. Due to this it may be just that the Cyanogenmod, by default, put you in a different regulatory domain and limits your frequency band to a subset offered by the AP. Hence, this effectively limits your wifi reach even if you are sitting right next to the AP.
I chose "Japan" since I remembered that their regulatory domain allowed for quite a large subset of frequencies that are allowed on the WIFI spectrum. This immediately increased my received signal strength and I did not have any problem since.
I suggest you play with this, it is likely that your android device will start functioning correctly. However, if you are facing this limited frequency issue on more than one device and that too running different operating systems and different wifi hardware...chances are that your wifi router is malfunctioning. In that case, replacement or repair of the Access point is the best alternative.
Good luck. I hope this solves your problem.

[Q] Why does JB 4.1.2 not connect to wifi properly??

Hello all. I have been playing with the new 4.1.2 JB ROMs on my 7100 Note2 and have been having one major and repeatable issue, that I have seen mentioned a few times by others, with no obvious resolution.
I have tried the various leaks of the 4.1.2 that were floating around (the stock one, Wannam and Android Revolution HD 5) and now I have just tried the final Polish PLAY version of 4.1.2 as well as the latest Wannam as well. All do/did the same thing:
They can see my wifi SSID and they can BEGIN to connect and "obtaining IP address" comes up. EITHER they then fail and tell me connection is poor and to try again, or they will connect and then drop within a minute. Just today I made some kind of movement on this by trying different kernels. Perseus25 gives up and tells me signal is poor. Perseus27 WILL actually connect and stay connected but can never actually surf anywhere. Note2Core will either connect or tell me my authentication is wrong (which it isn't) and when connected, it too refuses to surf. RedPill is same as Note2Core. BTW, even when they DO connect, they do so at a measly 5Mbps (and cant find internet)
Now, you are all probably thinking "his wifi is rubbish!" but I REALLY cant see how that can be! Firstly, there are other users out there who have mentioned this in a few threads but I have never seen any useful replies as to a solution (or a cause!). But also, if I restore back to my usual ROM which is Android Revolution 4.1 HD (=JB 4.1.1) with a perseus25 kernel, then I connect immediately and stable at 54Mbps and works great. (all it takes is a CWM restore back and it is working 100%. same location in my office, same router, wifi etc!) Plus same wifi serves two laptops, wife's Galaxy S2, and has seen many iphones, ipads, and other laptops all fine.
Back in the days of the leaked 4.1.2 I DID try jumping wifi channels on the router just to prove a point. Every single one did same thing.
Flashing procedures have been the 'standard' method: boot into CWM, wipe data/cache/dalvik/battery, then flash new ROM, boot OK.
I had assumed that the early leaked version of the ROM had some bug but very disappointed to find same behavior in the Polish PLAY version which is final release AFAIK. It makes all these subsequent ROMs based on it totally useless to me.
I even extracted and flashed the modem.bin from my working ARHD4.1 ROM but nothing changed. So modem and kernel same as working systems but something clearly broken somewhere.
If you are one of the other folks out there who also has this issue, might be helpful if you give some info about your setup, so somebody clever out there can help us join the 4.1.2 club?!
Any thoughts?
(setup: UK VirginMedia 120Mbps down/10Mbps up. Cisco Linksys E4200 router. about 10 feet from router with one 'paper wall' between! ARHD4.1 finds full signal and surfs fast. 4.1.2 totally unusable)
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi(s), you are my only hope!

Thanks for contributing. Helps prove the point that it is something in the new ROM as our wifis are fully functional otherwise. I have matched the modem and kernel from my working 4.1.1 system and still failing....
I hope we get some help.
I also got this problem from latest WanamLite & Omega ROM. Both are using 4.1.2 JB.
Wifi detected and connected but always obtaining ip address..
Sometimes it tooks so long and can get ip, but still cannot access internet or can't even ping different ip address from the same network.

strange, i've been running omega 7 to 7.4 but dont have any problems with wifi.
i've connected to home wifi (TP-Link), workplace (Cisco/Linksys) and some coffe-shops without any problem.
most of them using WPA2 or WEP. sometimes obtaining ip address with WEP could take a lil longer about (10-15sec) but always a success.
but never used wanamlite for my note2 so cant comment any, srry
I'm not saying the issue is in the wifi itself, but it can probably be fixed by disabling n mode and only using b and g. Also try to make sure the phone gets assigned a static ip.
Issue seems to be 4.1.2 related.

yes.. i'm also facing the same problem.. whenever i flashed custom rom based on 4.12, like wanam 2.0, 2.1 n crash rom, i cant connect to the wifi.. it always shows optaining ip address and it never connected.. now i m using stock rom 4.11 n there is no problem to connect to the wifi..
i juz wonder why it happens to several devices only?
I having the same wifi problem with 4.1.2 firmware...revert back to 4.1.1 wifi connection run flawlessly..strange !
I have tried switching OFF the 5GHz signal from my modem and sticking to 2.4GHz.
Have also tried turned off N and locked it down to just B & G.
Have tried turning off the WMM in the QoS section.
All of these have been mentioned around the place as possible solutions, and I am afraid none of them changed anything at all for me. Also read that one person had his wifi issues resolved when he dropped WPA2 security and went back down to WEP. This is an unacceptable solution to me as I don't want to make my WiFi so insecure, and also, what happens when I go to my friends and family who all (rightly) use WPA2?! So wont even be trying that.
I am actually getting a new Virgin Media Superhub in about 2 weeks so will revisit the issue then to see if 4.1.2 just doesn't like my Cisco router.
Just weird. And frustrating as wanted to move on to 4.1.2!
have you tried changing the channel on your n router?
Ok. I here is my evo 4G lte story. I flashed cm10 as soon as I got this phone a month and bit ago. I totally had wifi connectivity problems at work and at my house. One worked better and one had to be spammed to connect 20 times to connect and would still occasionally drop. I went to sense is from there and found it to be reliable. Though I just moved to the ota, I find this sense to be just as reliable.
In all. The new ota let me move to jb with reliability.

Why not all people getting this wifi problem using 4.1.2 ROM? Does the device something problem? But why going back to 4.1.1, wifi problem dissapeared and can connect directly?
Really2 weird....

yes.. i also wonder why this happen..
I also have exactly the same problem. I have tried every single 4.1.2 ROM but I can't keep my wifi working. I have had to go back to 4.1.1 as well. My wifi is perfect on 4.1.1. I use Cisco e4200 with ddwrt flashed. Very frustrating!

Try changing channels to below 11 if you're in Europe and the router uses channels above.

I`am on ARHD 6.0 currently and i never had problems with wifi on all the previous ARHD rom`s. Try doing a full wipe or at least also do a system wipe (and wipe cache/dalvik cache, data/factory reset and format preload) before flashing a rom. I`am sure that will help guys.
i have same problem no ip adressing and when i set statique ip no internet
i test Omega wanam mondx... same issue
omega 6.1 works great but at 7 version no internet by wifi, but ok in data
i have a logcat if help (catlog app)
