Quick new questions! - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! I just got my G2, and I am totally new to this scene. I'm following black prince's video guide on how to root, but when I try to temp root my phone, it tells me I need to enable usb debugging..
Now, I searched all over my phone, google, and the forum but I couldn't find anything besides USB tethering, which didn't work..If anyone can help me, I'd be greatful
also: Once I root my phone, how do I go about putting a custom rom on there/ bacon bits (if anyone can enlighten me what that is)
I looked at guides, but they're confusing talking about pushing and some other stuff that I am not familiar with. Thanks!!

To be honest if you can't find a rather simple checkbox in your phone you really don't need to root
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

But who am I to judge? To find usb debugging go to settings--> applications-->development and there you go click the checkmark.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

I feel dumb as hell, thats the last place I expected that to be in. Sorry, and thank you!

Thank you so much, now my device is rooted because it has that s-off as the video said.
Now, what would somebody recommend/ how do I go about doing this the simple way?

Im confused. Are you saying you need to get s-off or do you already have it?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Well you must first ask yourself. What do i want root for? Search the market for "root" thats a good start to give you an idea of some of the things you can do with root. Now you will want to read through the various roms you can flash if you want. Some have the sense ui if thats your flavor or you can go with a vanilla rom or cm6 for a vanilla plus feel. But really just read everything
In the forum and find something that sounds interesting and fun.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Well, I got S-off, so now I believe I'm good to flash roms.
I want something that will either save me battery (such as taking off the stock apps that came with), or some neat rom. Any suggestions?

So I installed Rom manager, and I tried to install Clockwork Mod that it requires you to install but I get the following error
"An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
And when I first open up Rom Manager, it says
"You must root your phone for ROM Manager to Function. Superuser was not found at /system/bin/su or system/xbin/su. "
But I rooted my phone, and my S is off...?

Go into terminal an type su.. it should say permissions granted

I'm no expert on G2's and I don't even have mine yet but I have been reading about root on the G2 for the past week but are you rooted with GFree? The VISIONary method is old, the new method is with Rage and GFree, the VISIONary method is about 90% real, its not TRUE S-OFF. And when you say terminal, do you mean the emulated terminal? If so, maybe you accidentally have the superuser app to deny root access to the terminal app. Look at your super user app and see if it is in the denied list. And if you did root with the old VISIONary method, re-root with Rage and GFree. I can do my best to help you get a proper S-OFF if you would like.

Is there a pause before it says that ? Because the first time you do "su" a window will pop up on your phone screen from the Superuser app, and you have to authorise Superuser to let "su" have root permissions. If the phone screen is off you might not notice this, then it will fail to get the necessary permission.

Just got a new EVO, how do I root?

Yea Yea, I know the most common question, yet I don't see anything for the newest version (3.26.651.6)
I am not looking for any special Rom, just a standard Root.. A one click would be great, but whatever you guys recommend would be awesome!
THANKS!!

First, 3.26 is not the newest version. The current OTA is 3.29.
Second, Look at unrEVOked to root both 3.26 and 3.29.
Edit: I just searched. http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
Just followed all that exactly, I have NO idea if it worked or not.. It went to the boot screen twice on mine and only once on the video and the video also showed it going into a dos type of screen "loading" things (on the phone)
MINE DIDNT DO ANY OF THAT..
This is nuts! How am I to tell if it is installed or not? The instructions dont tell you at all how to check!!

Restart the phone into boot loader. (Volume down + power.)
Does it say S-Off in the first line?
Yes? Then you should load into Clockwork by selecting recovery.
Also is super user app installed?
If yes to both, you should be rooted.
The dos screen was probably adb, just to show it was rooted.
If you open the tools folder with adb in it and type "adb shell" it should show a $ if its rooted and a # if it is not.
If you type "su" your phone should then show a superuser request, which also means you're rooted with super user access.
(I clicked though the videos but didn't see any dos screens. :-/)

learn how to use the search feature on this site, and read the instructions 3times before trying to do something you are not familiar with on your new phone. Rushing into things will only cause you problems...
if you show S-off in the bootloader menu then you have done the root correctly.
Goodluck.
do a search for "One Click How to Root the EVO with Unrevoked 3.21" by djR3Z
i just rooted my evo yesterday using the instructions in his post. it's the easiest and quickest method i've found. hope this helps.
Yea I rushed a little for sure..
But Im coming from a CE phone and very familiar with it..
Here is the problem... and I notice with many many other people to.
I wound up doing the 1 click rooting, but it took some digging and searching to figure out I needed an additional program, (SU)
It doesn't mention on almost every tutorial that you need to get a file managing program and the SU program.
Sure it teaches you how to root properly, but to actually benefit from the root you need the other files.
Well, in anycase, Im happy got what I wanted and what I wanted to work, works flawlessly
Thanks guys!
Unrevoked installed SU for me.
You can also get a flashable zip from the forums here.
And super user is also on the market.
Oh, btw...
Congrats!

I spent a whole day learning ADB before I felt comfortable enough to go through and root my G2 lol. Wish I had seen this vid would have been a great help but I can send it to my friends who haven't taken the plunge yet.
Thanks for the heads up.

Dude that was time well spent.
ADB is essential to android all together, there may be one click root options and other quick fix packages but if your seriouse with android you need to know ADB.
+1 for adb knowledge.

Yeah adb is very usefull. Spending time to learn the commands will help you greatly in the future and also save you a lot of time.

YAY I FIXED IT. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID.
1. reboot
2. Open and run visionary (with set system r/w after root) checked.
3. After root is complete, click root again (should say already rooted)
4. Open Terminal and sype "su" then enter
5. Type "sync" and wait about a min
6. POWER OFF THE PHONE the right way by holding down the power.
7. After reboot it should work! YAY!!

I fixed it as well but I did differently.. maybe it will help those still having trouble.. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID.
1) The first problem I had was I had Visionary 11 AND 12 (+plus) installed and both were set to root on boot. This was just a left over quirk from after doing the perm root since I just assumed it had to be set to root on boot, and after installing Vis12 I forgot to uninstall Vis11. Apparently Vis12 doesn't overwrite Vis11 so having both apps root on boot was a bad thing.
2) So I deleted both visionary apps (When they tried to root on boot I backed out of them and just uninstalled them)
3) Then I rebooted and was still not permrooted (although S was off)!
4) Sooo I reinstalled Visionary 12(+Plus)... and checked root on boot AND the r/w partition setting. Then rebooted..
5) With the lone visionary now installed and working solo it rebooted and ran on root and I was rooted..
So now i"m like, ok.. it rooted with visionary, but I don't want visionary in order to root...
6) So I uninstalled visionary 12 (for the second time) and rebooted and now the root stuck.
I think that visionary 12 needs to run after the first reboot with those two settings checked... run on boot and the partition setting. After that happens once I think it makes the root stick.. or at least it did for me.
I had same issue with S-off but no root. I did the manual method and got S-off but root never stuck. I tried the manual method again and again but when I rebooted the apps would say root access could not be gained. What ended up working was I went into Visionary 12 and pushed the temp root button. Once I had temp root I then pushed the perm root button. It did it's thing and rebooted. Once it rebooted I had root that stuck. Don't know if this will help anyone having this issue but it was the only thing that worked for me. As a side note, it was like seeing an old childhood friend when I flashed Cyanogens bacon bits.

Yea gotta say I don't regret a single minute of searching reading and learning. I just wish I could have had the root and THEN learned how to use ADB simply because I'm an impatient chump at times. Learning how to use it seemed to open up my eyes to things though now I have a better grasp on everything I found confusing when I first came back to browsing the Android forums.

I am just curious: if I do this perm root with S-OFF, but keep the stock ROM for the time being, will that prevent potential future OTA's from T-Mobile, potential upgrades to next versions of Android?
Now, I understand that all those "updates" will also be available via these forums but I'm just a tad concerned that all the custom ROM's might have bugs that would prevent everyday features...
I appreciate stuff like overclocking and tethering/hotspot hacks, but I'm more of a "set it and forget it" kinda guy - most likely I won't have time to constantly test new ROM's and report bugs, wait for fixes, etc.
Just wondering if you have any suggestions?
P.S. Although I am not VERY technical with Android I was able to follow instructions around here to reflash stock ROM, but I was in the "emergency" mode - it was "do it or die" situation made me pretty nervous and I hope not to have to do that constantly
I did everything in the video...and I have s-off and the superuser app every reboot...but root won't stick....and yeah..I've tried temp and perm root with visionary r12 and 13....should I start all over again?
Get r13...it gives you an option to temp root or perm root..click on temp root first than click on perm root..let see if that works

G2 root

Can someone please help me root this damn thing. I haven't had root since the first few versions of visionary were out. I have tried the new visionary versions up to date, no luck. I have tried the rage method, and I always get stuck at the command to lock in root. I have super cid, sim unlock, real s off etc... I am able to get a root shell on terminal emulator when I run rage but that is about it. I have had two different errors when running /data/local/tmp/root. One being permission denied and the other a long string of **** ending in unable to chmod blah blah blah. All I have done to this thing was tmp root in the past, then deleted all files associated with that, and i downloaded the nov. Ota from xda and loaded that from recovery. Anyone got any ideas on what is wrong with this phone or me? I follow all guides to exact detail.

Did you read the Rage guide thoroughly before rooting? Because I had no problems with Rage.
Here's another option, check out post #3 in the following thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885430
All I can suggest is read again and try again, this is the simplest root method I've seen so far: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228&highlight=rage
I'm good now, but I'm not sure if I'm perm or I still need to lock it in. I just ran set cpu no prob and rom mangaer and have access to download roms.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
It seems very simple to me to but the fact that things would not go the way they should have,(I am a very good at paying attention to detail) made it difficult. I had to do a few alternate paths to achieve this because of unknown bugs or things in my phone.

You will soon find out if it's permanent root or not if you reboot, because if you can still get root then it was/is permanent.
If it's not permanent, then we need to know about those errors from the root script that you're running to lock in the permanent root. Something is going wrong if you're getting several errors from it, and it's probably something very simple to fix.
I'm all good now. After a few work arounds I've finally managed to make this damn thing root. Finally have cm6.1.1, my first custom rom, and got this beast overclocked again, with a real kernel for a change. Now to really start "jimmy ****in" my phone. Take care and thanks for the reply.

can you describe more about the workaround because I am having same probs with rage, it just simply does not lock in root.
I followed exactly what was written in the wiki several times but could not lock in root upon reboot
Okay, now I'm curious. Where is everyone getting stuck with the Rage method? Because I successfully rooted 3 G2s that way (mine and a couple other guys).

I tried rage but upon lock in the root (after gfree), it gave msg saying mkdir/system/bin failed, already existed.
I rebooted the phone and still does not have perm root, can not get SU in adb, it keeps telling me permission denied.
Also tried the visionary method posted on theunlockr.com but everytime i insmod the wpthis, it keeps telling me Format exec error
Looking for some helps

Umm..."mkdir /system/bin" isn't in the list of instructions for the rage method. Are you sure you're following it to the letter?
I followed the instruction several times, word by word. After gfree -f, I did the lock root /data/local/tmp/root and the terminal returns the msg saying files already exist

Some people, including myself, are running into the problem with rage because for some reason,(possibly the november OTA update combined with effects from older versions of visionary) Superuser.apk would not properly push to the phone. The nookcolor method of pushing su.apk to the phone works and also locked root in for me, without having to run /data/local/tmp/root at the end of the rage method after gaining s off, sim unlock, and super cid. I simply ran rage and once I was in temp root shell on terminal, I used. The different method to load su on phone and that was that.

It really is odd. I used the link I posted in post 12 on three different phones with no problems whatsoever.
I'm not exactly sure what caused the problems. I never had a problem when the old temp root visionaries were all that was available. I was temp rooted with the stock kernel oc module. Then I pushed the november OTA manually and disabled some bloatware after that. Then I deleted visionary and su when visionary came out with the permroot option. I wiped my phone after that to download visionary 11 or 12, and from then until my last attempt it never gave me any kind of root at all. So I stumbled upon the rage method and then the problems started to come up with that method too, but they were able to be solved unlike visionary.

Trying to get SuperCID

I previously rooted using Gfree but I opted to use the "s -off" method only instead of doing the whole she-bang. I'm going back and performing all the steps now but I cannot get past getting a root shell. My Terminal Emulator closes but I cannot open it again the second time. It just freezes for awhile but never works.
How do I fix this?
Hey,
Probably a dumb question, but have you tried via ADB? the guide in my signature is the one that i used to get everything unlocked though ADB if you wanted to give that a try.
I use ADB to push the files and that's about it.
Terminal freezes as soon are you enter in su? Are you sure you were properly rooted before?
Also, are you trying the whole rooting process again (as in using rage to temp root)? This isn't necessary if you already have permanent root. You just have to run gfree as stated in the Wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Unlock_the_Phone.2C_Set_SuperCID.2C_and_Turn_Radio_S-OFF
Yeah I'm already permanently rooted. I'll try ur advice later today. Thanks!

[Q] Rooting my phone....

I just got my G2 phone not too long ago and I want to start doing this modding stuff. (I've never had a smart phone before, this is the first). And I'm not sure where to start... Can someone direct me into the right direction?
I used blackprince310's video to help me root my phone.
http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=US#/watch?xl=xl_blazer&v=tU9zn_BEth4
Once rooting you can download other ROMS. Which are like differnt OS. Like g2 runs stock froyo let's call that windows xp. When you root it u have the capabilities to modifiy without problem. Now u can put like sense on your phone that's like windows 7 persay.
Three main apps u need from app store are ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, & Superuser. Other ones could be gscript, terminal. & in video u need Visonary.

Just follow the simple wiki guides. Don't use Visionary to perm root.
Youtube the unlockr for htc vision. You use the VISIONary app to temproot, then you can gain permroot after finishing both tutorials. They're very clear and concise tutorials, I actually followed it a few months ago knowing absolutely nothing about root or adb.

Use rage.
Visionary used to be a one click root app. However, it caused problems for some users. The unlockr corrected the issue in the tutorial. You will first gain temproot through visionary, copy files and run some adb commands via desktop, then gain permroot and s-off again through visionary. Its really easy, all you have to do is copy him. I did it myself in november and my phone still runs flawlessly.

If you use Rage (the method I linked to earlier), you won't need to downgrade. Just type in the commands using ADB and Terminal Emulator and flash ClockworkMod Recovery through ROM Manager and you're good to go.
See I want to do it thatf way but I can't figure out ADB I'm stuck at one part at on that noob guide. :/ I can't figure out how to use the cd command to go to the file wwith adb on it which is on my desktop ....(using the fast method for windows xp). Then I tried the other way and I could never get the path part right.

If you haven't already figured out the adb problem, no, you don't have to downgrade to use the other method. But then, I don't know what would happen if you switch from one rooting method to another. Especially when you're right in the middle of it xP
